Many tensions have been competing for attention in 2011 with some successes in the favour of good, as we approach Layla-tul Bara’at, which this year is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (15th Sha’ban) of July 2011, it marks the time we should seriously prepare ourselves for the blessed month of Ramadhan, as we prepare ourselves to pray. It is time to raise the levels of vibrations that we lie our lives at, as the earth raises its level of vibration – for this is why there has been much tension within the body physical this year, because we are operating at level lower than that which sustains us.
Increasingly as aspects of secularism demands likeness on the lower level, we are remaindered of the balance and harmony that comes from differences, variety, and the uniqueness of everyone of Allah (SWT) creations, so for those who can, observing Layla-tul Bara’at helps to re-balance the scales of our intentions.
The middle of Sha’ban marks the last day of the three bright days, of Ayyam-ul-Bayz, the bright days, which are marked celestially by the brightness of the full moon. Some of us refer to it as Layla-tul Bara’at/Bara’ah, others as Laylatun Nisfe min Sha’ban, or Shab-e-barat.
It has been translated as the Night of Records, the Night of Freedom from Fire/Salvation, or the Night of Innocence. It is when we seek pardon reflecting on the sins we have committed, and make a commitment to not repeat them.
- Make intention to fast
- The ceremonial wash or ghusl, followed by w’udhu (ablutions)
- Two raka’ats (rounds) – afte Surat-ul Fatiha read Ayat-ul Kursi, and Surat-al-Ahad three times. Sheikh Nazim recommends that the first recitation should be done with the intention of raising one’s station/maqam, the second recitation with the intention of asking for rizq or provision, and the third recitation with protection from one’s enemies.
- After sunset/maghrib recite “La Hawla walaa Quwwata illa Billahil-aliyil Azeem” 40 times with Durud Shareef beginning and ending.
- After Maghrib prayers, offer 6 Rakats in twos by
- Reciting Surat-ul Yasin once then read “Dua Nisfu Sha’ban” then make a personal du’a asking Allah (SWT) for forgiveness as one reflects on one’s sins. Reading Surat-ul Yasin three times in a row is best in a group where one reads for all, for in this collective spirit the resonance is increased for all who participate.
Dua Nifs Sha’ban:

Translation in English
O Allah, Tireless Owner of Bounty. O Owner of Sublimity, Honor, Power, and Blessings. There is no Allah except You, the Support of refugees and Neighbor of those who seek nearness, Guardian of the fearful. O Allah, if you have written in Your Book that I be abject, deprived, banished, and tight-fisted, then erase O Allah, through Your bounty, my misery, deprivation, banishment, and stinginess and establish me with You as happy, provided with blessings, for surely You have said—and Your Word is True— in Your Revealed Book on the tongue of Your Messenger, “Allah blots out or confirms what He pleases, and with Him is the Mother of Books.” (13:39) My God, by the Great Manifestation of the Night of the middle of the Noble Month of Sha`bān “in which every affair of wisdom is made distinct and authorized,“(44:4) remove from us calamities—those we know and those we do not know, but Thou Knowest best—for surely You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous. May Allah bless Muhammad and his Family and Companions.
- After Salat-ul ‘Isha recite Surat-ul Ihklas 1,000 times
Laylat-ul Bara’at is the night that decided the path of an individual for the whole year in terms of happiness, sadness, birth, death, illness etc., which are executed in Ramadhan on Layat-ul Qadr, the night of destiny. It is a night full of blessings for all of creation except the idolaters, those who hold hatred, and those who murder.
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious looks down on the middle night of Shab’an and forgives all His creation except two people, the innovator and the murderer. – At-Tirmidhi #1307.
Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra) explains in Al-Ghunya li-Talibin:
that Abu Huraira (ra) reported the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) saying: Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to me on the night of mid-Sha’ban and said to me: “O Muhammad, raise your head heavenwards!” I asked him: “What night is this?” and he replied: ” This is the night when Allah (Glorified is He) opens three hundred of the gates of mercy, forgiving all who do not make anything His partner . The only exceptions are those who practice sorcery or divination, are addicted to wine, or persist in usury and illicit sex; these He does not forgive until they repent.”
When a quarter of the night had passed, Gabriel (peace be upon him) came down and said: “0 Muhammad, raise your head!” So I looked up, to behold the gates of Paradise wide open. At the first gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who bow in worship this night!” At the second gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who prostrate themselves in worship this night!” At the third gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who offer supplication this night!” At the fourth gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who make remembrance this night!” At the fifth gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who weep this night from fear of Allah!” At the sixth gate an angel was calling: “Good news for those who submit this night!” At the seventh gate an angel was calling: “Will anyone ask, that his request may be granted?”
At the eighth gate an angel was calling: “Will anyone seek forgiveness, that he may be forgiven?” I said: ” O Gabriel, how long will these gates remain open?” He replied: “From the beginning of the night until the break of dawn.” Then he said: “0 Muhammad, tonight Allah has emancipated as many slaves from the Fire as the number hairs on the sheep bani Kalb.”
Sitting down all night and asking forgiveness is recommended.
