U.S. Saved from GM Crops!
If anyone was falling under the impression that the U.S. has become a God-forsaken country, well here is a clue that has is not.
Despite the beligerent and money/power driven attempt to pass GM crops as food to the masses, and as a solution to drought riddled regions, the blessings of drought here can be forgiven!
The ISIS report (Institute of Social Responsibility in Science) have found that it is not GM crops that are surviving the drought, but non-GM crops as nature intended. Authored by Dr Eva Sirinathsinghji, the report Howard Vlieger of GM Watch (UK), a co-founder and agroecological farming advisor of Verity Farms in drought-stricken South Dakota the US, provided evidence to the fact growing both GM (Monsanto’s GM triple-stack GM corn) and non-GM varieties of soy bean and corn.
It is not surprising really considering that GM crops demands more water. The result on Verity Farm has been 100-120 bushels per acre (BPA) compared to the 8-12 BPA to 30-50 BPA of GM corn. These findings have been supported by a Brazialian study led by Luis Zobiole from State University of Maringá which found that GM glyphosate-tolerant soybeans absorbed less water, and were less water efficient. In a previous study Zobiolefound thatGM glyphosate-tolerant soybeans had
- Lower rates of photosynthesis, which is thought to be a probable cause for poor water absorption,
- Lower nutrition
- Lower immunity against plant diseases (with 40 known diseases) affecting other crops (apples, bananas, barley, bean, canola, citrus, cotton, grape, melon, soybean, sugar beet, sugarcane, tomato and wheat).
With the worst drough in 50 years, unsutainable practices breeds unsustainability.
Farmers have been drivien to desperate measures including selling their livestock to the slaughterhouse, because they cannot afford to feed them. The complete control Monsanto has had over the agro-food business from seed to the dinner plate, has left most farmers without their own seeds, and without access to non-GM seeds through Intellectual Property rights. The list of countries that have banned GM crops and seeds is steadily growing with:
Meanwhile the situation has been used as an opportunity on the stock market to drive food prices through the roof globally. But like anything else, a product or a situation can not go very far without consumers!
