Imperialist France by Moonlight

By Hwaa Irfan

When Egypt’s President Mursi’ government tried to implement a much needed action i.e. the closing of businesses at night that add little to the economy, in order to reduce the unsustainable consumption of electricity, the elite barked – the same elite that played a key role recently in wrecking the country with the help of Israel; not bothered or even aware that under Mubarak’s rule, the frequent power cuts in poor areas was s that the elite could eat their cake. The instant reaction before they worked out circumstantial reasons to down Mursi was

“Whatever it costs we’ll pay!”

“It’s a human right!”

Actually it is not, and comes at an incredible high price, the unsustainable consumption of oil and coal that is ruining environments and destroying communities.

As bankrupt France goes plundering into Syria and Mali, under a ‘socialist’ government, France will be switching off the lights as of 1st July 2013.

Announced by the French Environment Ministry, a new law expects all residential buildings to cut power on interior and window display lighting at 1 am.  The expected savings is the equivalent of the annual consumption of 750,000 households as we as reduce light pollution.  Light pollution releases 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and prevents nitrate radical from breaking down harmful emissions emitted by cars and factories.

Like Egypt, exceptions are to be made for tourist and cultural areas, and as includes Christmas.

Long before Thomas Edison switched on the first light bulb, the Qur’an told us:

{Surely in the daytime you have prolonged occupation} (Al- Muzzammil 73:7).

This implies that there is counter-balance in the night to daily preoccupations. What could be achieved in the evenings could sustain and nourish us into the day. However, we use artificial light to extend those pre-occupations. Once the daylight ends, the pineal gland goes into increased production of the hormone melatonin, which regulates other hormones. The pineal gland also regulates our body cycle or circadian rhythm along with the central nervous system. By extending light artificially to levels of and above 500lux we impede its production. A darkened room with a 100watt bulb provides 100lux if we are five feet away. This does not compromise the release of melatonin.

Causing harm underlies all that is deemed haram forbidden in Islam, including self harm. So maybe what Egyptian neo-liberalists add on their list of complaints is the ‘freedom’ to inflict self-harm, harm of others and the right to harm the Earth. Business as usual!
