30 Chicago Priests Guilty of Paedophilia*

30 Chicago Priests Guilty of Paedophilia*

Thousands of pages of documents showing sexual abuse of children by Chicago priests are set to go public on Tuesday, a report says.

The Archdiocese of Chicago handed over last week more than 6,000 pages of documents to victims’ attorneys, who said they will show the archdiocese concealed abuse for decades.

The attorneys said some priests were even moved to new parishes where they molested again.

The Washington Post reports that the new disclosure will involve 30 priests of the archdiocese, one of the largest and most influential in the US.

The Roman Catholic Church has been under harsh criticism in recent years for its failure to report child sex abuse, which mostly occurred before 1988 and 1996, to authorities.

Cardinal Francis George, who has led the archdiocese since 1997, released a letter to parishioners on Jan. 12 in which he apologized for the abuse.

“I apologize to all those who have been harmed by these crimes and this scandal, the victims themselves, most certainly, but also rank and file Catholics who have been shamed by the actions of some priests and bishops,” George wrote.

The archdiocese has paid millions of dollars to settle sexual abuse claims. In 2008, the archdiocese agreed to pay $12.6 million to 16 victims of sexual abuse by priests.

According to the Post, many of the accused priests are dead, and the documents will include only 30 of 65 priests for whom the archdiocese says it has credible allegations of abuse.

The Archdiocese of Chicago was established as a diocese in 1843 and as an archdiocese in 1880. It serves more than 2.3 million Catholics in Cook and Lake counties in Northeastern Illinois.

Saudi Arabia is Behind Current Iraqi Carnage*

Saudi Arabia is Behind Current Iraqi Carnage*

From Infowar.comAn Iraqi lawmaker says Baghdad has evidence that points to Saudi Arabia’s involvement in terrorist attacks inside Iraq.

Salman al-Moussawi said the documents prove that the Saudi government is backing the al-Qaeda-linked group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), state TV channel al-Iraqiya reported.

Moussawi also said that Baghdad has obtained new documents indicating that the Saudi government is providing the ISIL with arms, money and vehicles to hit Iraqi army and police.

The Iraqi government also has information indicating that the Saudi spy agency trains ISIL terrorists for street wars, the lawmaker added.

The revelation comes as the Iraqi army and Sunni tribesmen continue their battle to drive out ISIL militants in the western province of Anbar.

Iraq is experiencing its worst cycle of violence since 2008, with al-Qaeda-linked militants flexing their muscles on Baghdad’s doorstep.

Earlier in January, Iraqi security officials said a senior ISIL commander, identified as Shaker Vahib al-Fahdavi, had met with a top Saudi intelligence official in Anbar, just weeks before he was killed by Iraqi forces.

An unnamed al-Qaeda commander recently arrested by Iraqi forces also said that the ISIL received $150 million and 60 vehicles in aid from Saudi Arabia one day before an anti-government camp was dismantled by Iraqi forces in the city of Ramadi in December.

The violence in Anbar broke out on December 30, 2013, when the army removed an anti-government protest camp in Ramadi. Authorities said the camp was used as “headquarters for the leadership of al-Qaeda.” The bloodshed later spread to the nearby city of Fallujah.

The Imperial Vultures to Gather for the U.S.-Africa Summit*

The Imperial Vultures to Gather for the U.S.-Africa Summit*

The summit, together with Obama’s trip to Africa last year, and a promised future visit before he leaves office, might go some way to assuaging disappointment that he did not pay the continent more attention in his first term.

The president did visit Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania last year, unveiling a series of agricultural, power generation and development initiatives.

He also held a summit of young African leaders, designed to groom the next generation of the continent’s politicians in 2010.

The president also paid a short visit to Ghana in 2009, which marked the only visit to sub-Saharan Africa of his first term.

Obama pledged during his trip to the continent last year to help build “Africa for Africans” and argued that the region’s growing economic potential could help it shake off its reputation as simply a recipient of foreign aid.

Amid much talk of a US against China power grab in Africa, following billions of dollars of trade and investment by Beijing in the continent, Obama cautioned against the idea that a new proxy Cold War could play out in Africa.

“This is not a zero-sum game. This is not the Cold War. You’ve got one global market, and if countries that are now entering into middle-income status see Africa as a big opportunity for them, that can potentially help Africa,” the president told reporters.

At the same time, however, he cautioned that nations that simply saw Africa as a source of raw materials would not serve Africans well.

The Obama administration has also been increasing its indirect engagement in regional conflicts in Africa.

The US military last week started transporting the first elements of a Rwandan battalion to the Central African Republic, where they will join an African Union mission.

International forces are trying to restore order after the country plunged into sectarian warfare following a March coup in which the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel group overthrew president Francois Bozize.

US forces also last month rescued Americans fleeing violence in the new nation of South Sudan. Washington was a key mediating player in the country’s independence from Sudan.

In 2011, Obama deployed a small detachment of military trainers to Uganda to aid forces hunting down the Lord’s Resistance Army and its leader Joseph Kony.

Washington is also increasingly concerned about Al-Qaeda franchises in the continent. In October, US Navy SEALs raided a hideout of a Shebab leader on the Somali coast but withdrew after a firefight.
