Germany on the Verge of Bankruptcy*

Germany on the Verge of Bankruptcy*

By Kenneth Schortgen Jr

On July 9, German legislators voted to approve bank bail-ins as the primary solution for re-capitalization the next time their financial system experiences a collapse or major crisis.  Thus following in the footsteps of the Cyprus Experiment, which saw depositors lose upwards of 60% of the money they thought was safely protected in their banks and financial institutions, German depositors, not the taxpayers, are now on the hook to pay for a bank’s corruptness, risky bets, or bad decisions.

However, even this egregious new policy may pale in comparison to what is coming for the German state as it is now estimated that 50% of all municipal governments within the chief Eurozone nation are underwater, and on the brink of insolvency and bankruptcy.

I have warned that about 50% of the German municipalities are on the verge of bankruptcy. The pensions have been unfunded and are absorbing everything. As we saw in Detroit with more than 50% of current revenue going to pensions, taxes either rise, the borrow more, or they are out of business.

The German municipalities currently need more than 100 billion euros to renovate their dilapidated infrastructure. Government has been mismanaged on a grand scale and all politicians can do is think it is the public’s fault for not paying more taxes. They refuse to ever look at how they are running government on every level.

German municipalities face rising debt levels that mimic Greece. They cannot afford the investment to even maintain schools and roads any more. – Martin Armstrong

Germany is the linchpin that holds together the entire Eurozone.  As the primary contributor to the European Central Bank (ECB), it, along with France to a certain degree, make most of the economic decisions for the rest of the EU, and in particular, the bailing out or financial assistance given to failing nations such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.  And because the Eurozone never left the Great Recession after 2008, reliance upon debt has only made matters worse since Germany, along with the France and countries located in Southern Europe, are entering into a debt spiral that mirrors American cities like Detroit and Stockton, CA, and brings the entire Union to the edge of collapse.

Europe is now in the same economic landscape they experienced during the 1920′s, only this time it wasn’t war that led to their Great Depression, but underfunded promises to their people, and a budget built on debt rather than growth and production.  And with each passing year, where these underfunded liabilities are masked under accounting tricks rather than real financial reform, a day or reckoning is coming fast, and will hit everyone out of nowhere, driving the West into a new Dark Age of civil unrest and financial insolvency.

Has Israel’s Ground Attack Been Defeated?

Has Israel’s Ground Attack Been Defeated?

Tony Blair said in an interview with Ynet that

“There won’t be a destruction of Hamas … you won’t destroy Hamas as a political entity,” he said. “…what I do know is that will only happen if it happens within the context of a way forward, particularly for the people of Gaza, that gives them some hope for the future, because in the end a political movement like that has support on the ground, and you need to shift … take away that support.”

Hamas rejected Egypt’s cease-fire plan, whilst Israel are discussing it. Betrayed by Sisi’s Egypt, Israel seems to have lost the battle on the ground while Abbas asks for U.N protection of Palestinians when like most of the world leaders, the U.N. has done nothing…

By  Gilad Atzmon

As the Israeli Cabinet announced earlier today that it accepted the Egyptian cease-fire offer, Palestinian freedom fighters in Gaza continued firing rockets targeting the whole of Israel.

The situation is clear.  Israel is desperate for a break in the violence. In spite of its endless ‘bravado,’ and military might, Israel lacks the military capacity and the courage to encounter Palestinian resistance on the ground. The Israeli elite recognizes that the military can’t resolve the problem, if anything, its extensive use would diminish Israeli manoeuvrability on the international front.

Hamas, on the other hand, has won its biggest military, political and ideological victory to date – it has managed to deliver some elementary messages to all of Israeli society:

You are living on our Palestinian stolen land, our Right to Return is elementary and is not negotiable. You Israelis do not belong here, you never did, and you had better consider your options immediately.

Hamas has also managed to dismantle the BDS / Jewish Lefty’s desperate and blatantly deceitful attempt to present the conflict as an issue over the ‘1967 occupation.’  The range and targets of Palestinian missiles deliver a clear message to both Israelis and their controlled opposition agents within the Left. Palestine is a stretch of land between the river and the sea. In other words, no more empty talk on ‘conflict resolutions.’ It is either Israel or Palestine. And today it seems Palestine it will be.

Hamas’ strategy in the last week has displayed a rare genius in the method it used to capitalise on Israel’s superior technology and the Iron Dome in particular.  What could be smarter or more ethical than putting Israel under a constant barrage of rockets, delivering your essential message with missiles, yet knowing that no one will be hurt?

In the past week Hamas has managed to utilise Israeli technology and to integrate Israeli engineering into its operational tactics. This is a unique significant tactical achievement that proves that the Palestinian leadership in Gaza is significantly more sophisticated than their counterparts in Jerusalem

This is a repetition of a familiar Jewish historical and cultural pattern.  By the time the Jewish elite is convinced that its domination is established, a disaster is imminent. As Israel came to believe that it had bought itself the final and ultimate technological answer to Palestinian ballistic resistance, it has been devastated to discover that it has lost the war on every possible front: militarily, technologically, politically and ethically.

Muslim Americans Boycott White House Ramadan Dinner*

Muslim Americans Boycott White House Ramadan Dinner*

By Kevin Gosztola

Muslim American groups and individuals are boycotting the White House’s iftar dinner and will instead be participating or supporting a protest outside the White House against United States government policies, which disproportionately impact Muslims all over the world.

The iftar is when Muslims break fast during Ramadhan. In the past, the White House has held its Ramadan dinner with members of Muslim groups and various distinguished Muslim Americans. The dinner has been seen as an opportunity for Muslims to engage with officials in power. And, while there will still be Muslim Americans who attend the dinner, there is a growing concern that policies simply keep getting worse and they would be complicit if they attended the Ramadan dinner.

More than a hundred Muslim advocates, activists, and scholars put out an open letter the day of the dinner explaining why they believed a boycott was necessary. They claimed the dinner

“represents nothing more than an attempt to whitewash state violence, absolve government institutions from taking responsibility and creating mechanisms of accountability and transparency for the civil rights violations that have been perpetrated towards Muslims and Muslim Americans, and Americans at large, beginning from even before the onset of the War on Terror.”

In particular, Muslims intend to protest the ongoing indefinite detention of Muslim prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay military prison. They intend to protest US support for Israel’s assault on Gaza as well as the mass surveillance being directed at Muslim Americans; in particular, the revelations that five prominent American Muslims have had their email accounts targeted by the NSA and FBI.

Ramah Kudaimi, one of the organizers involved in building support for the boycott, told Firedoglake,

“One of the main reasons we’re calling for this boycott is to say this is just an opportunity for the United States to have a publicity stunt where it whitewashes its crimes against Muslims.”

“Our action is going to be focusing on Guantanamo and the fact that, during last year’s iftar, the prisoners at Guantanamo who were on hunger strike were being force-fed, and it was very shameful that there were Muslim Americans going to the White House iftar to break their fast while their fellow Muslims” were being force-fed in Guantanamo, Kudaimi added.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) announced that it will not be “attending the government iftars” and called on Arab and Muslim communities to boycott, “given the government’s condoning of the current slaughter of Palestinians in Palestine and the spying of American Arabs and Muslims domestically.”

“Political engagement is important and having a seat at the table is crucial—but only when that seat is intended to amplify our voice as a community, not tokenize or subdue it,” the ADC declared. It also stated, “Government iftars, such as the White House Iftar, are highly politicized events that will be taking place in the shadow of the government’s lack of representation of the community, and will provide no room for this productive dialogue.”

Dr. Laila Al-Marayati, who is a chairperson of Kinder USA, an American Muslim organization which focuses on the health and well-being of Palestinian children, wrote a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry. She indicated she would not be attending the State Department’s dinner.

“The US government as the main supporter has all the tools at its disposal to implement an immediate ceasefire,” Al-Marayati suggested.

“As an American taxpayer, it is hard for me to understand why the State Department and White House are unable to leverage American support to bring the attacks to a halt.”

According to the Washington Post, White House Press Secretary Joshua Earnest responding to calls for a boycott by restating the obvious, which is that this is an

“opportunity for the president and other senior administration officials to pay tribute to the important role that Muslim Americans play in American communities all across the country.”

He did not want the protest of Muslim Americans to overshadow the effort of the Obama administration to pay tribute to Muslim Americans at this year’s dinner.

Earnest said exactly what infuriates Muslim Americans, repeating the mantra of Israel having a right to defend itself while at the same time ignoring whether Palestinians have a right to defend themselves. He also did not outright call for a ceasefire and instead said both sides have been encouraged to “consider the best way to deescalate this conflict,” as if there is some balance in the destruction that has been unfolding.

“As it relates to the recent reports of spying on Muslim Americans, I would point out that unlike some other countries, the United States of America doesn’t target individuals based on their race or ethnicity or religion,” Earnest stated.

“That is a principle to which we scrupulously adhere, and that hasn’t changed.”

Kudaimi responded to this idea that the US government does not target Muslims.

“They can claim all that they want that none of it is being targeted, but if you look at the reality, who is being victimized by these policies?”

“How many non-Muslims have been extra-judicially assassinated by the United States government?” she asked.

She highlighted the extrajudicial assassination of Muslim American Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen.

“If he was not Muslim, I believe his case would have engendered a huge outcry from other government officials instead of the shameful responses from government officials who will say things like, oh, well, he should have had a more responsible father.”

“How many non-Muslims have actually been rounded up and arrested for doing simple things like watching a YouTube video? Or speaking out against the US government?” Kudaimi also asked. She later concluded the White House can claim that the government doesn’t intend round up Muslims and focus on Muslims, but

“when the overwhelming majority of the victims are Muslims,” they can’t really hide behind that claim anymore.

The FBI has deployed undercover agents and informants (often with criminal pasts) into Muslim communities to frame, entrap and prosecute individuals for terrorism-related offenses. In fact, a recent study by the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) and Project Salam found that nearly ninety-five percent of individuals on a Justice Department list of “terrorism and terrorism-related convictions” from 2001-2010 were preemptive prosecutions. That means the defendants were pursued because of their beliefs, ideology or religious affiliation.

Mariam Abu-Ali’s brother, Ahmed, a US citizen, was detained and held without charge by intelligence officers in Saudi Arabia for two years. When he was brought to the United States, he was charged with “conspiracy to assassinate” President George W. Bush. The main evidence in this case was a confession that had been obtained through torture.

At Huffington Post, Mariam wrote,

“The White House iftar is a slap in the face to those in the Muslim community who have been victims of US civil-rights and human rights abuses.

“Year after year Muslims attend the iftar, arguing that this is a way to engage policy makers in an attempt to effectuate real change,” Mariam argued.

“Yet year after year more and more egregious violations of Muslims’ human and civil rights are uncovered. For our American Muslim leadership to not address our government’s civil rights and human rights abuses is a disservice not only to the community they claim to represent but to their country as well.”

Global Warming! The Coldest June in Antarctica, and Australia*

Global Warming! The Coldest June in Antarctica, and Australia*

ByAnthony Watts

Antarctica continues to defy the global warming script, with a report from Meteo France, that June this year was the coldest Antarctic June ever recorded, at the French Antarctic Dumont d’Urville Station.

According to the press release, during June this year, the average temperature was -22.4c (-8.3F), 6.6c (11.9F) lower than normal. This is the coldest June ever recorded at the station, and almost the coldest monthly average ever – only September 1953 was colder, with a recorded average temperature of -23.5c (-10.3F).

June this year also broke the June daily minimum temperature record, with a new record low of -34.9c (-30.8F).

Other unusual features of the June temperature record are an unusual excess of sunlight hours (11.8 hours rather than the normal 7.4 hours), and unusually light wind conditions.

Dumont d’Urville Station has experienced ongoing activity since 1956. According to the Meteo France record, there is no other weather station for 1000km in any direction.

Not since July 28 1911 has Brisbane felt this cold, getting down to a brisk 2.6C at 6.41am.

At 7am, it inched up to 3.3C.

Matt Bass, meteorologist from BOM, said the region was well below our average temperatures.

“If it felt cold, that’s because it was, breaking that record is pretty phenomenal for Brisbane,” Bass said.

“The average for this time of year is 12C, so Brisbane was about 9C below average, it is pretty impressive really, to have the coldest morning in 103 years is a big record.”

The coldest place across the state was Oakey which got down to -6.1C, which was the coldest temperature for the town since 2011.

Brisbane wasn’t the only town hitting landmark temperatures with Clermont breaking its coldest record two days in a row.

“Clermont in the coal fields got down to -4.5 which is a new record for them, their previous record was -3.7, which was set yesterday, so they’ve re-broken their record two days in a row.”

All these cold temperatures are being brought on as cold air moves up from the south, combined with clear nights.

“We are seeing a series of cold fronts push really cold air across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, which has brought low level snow.

“Which is good for the ski fields down there, but once all that air moves up towards Queensland it is still very cold and it loses all that moisture that drops all over Victoria and those other areas.

“By the time it comes up here it is cold and dry and on clear nights like last night that cold dry air chills off really easily.”

The temperature gauge is starting to slowly rise in Brisbane sitting at a cool 3.6c shortly before 8am, with a top of 22c expected for today, although don’t get too excited as the cold temperatures are expected again tomorrow.

“There will be another cold morning tomorrow, probably not as cold as this morning but it will still be very frosty across the Darling Downs and the interior and very cold along much of the coastal strip as well.

“It will be maybe a degree or two warmer than this morning and then Monday will be slightly warmer.

“By Tuesday and Wednesday we will have a bit of cloud around, we are looking at temperatures back towards the average of around 11C.”

Other chilly areas were;

  • Warwick -5.9
  • Kingaroy -5.7
  • Applethorpe -5.4
  • Dalby -5.0
  • Clermont -4.5
  • Miles -4.3
  • Roma -4.3
  • Beaudesert -3.8
  • Ipswich/Amberley -2.5
  • Gympie -1.5
  • Charleville -1.5
  • Coolangatta 1.0 – coldest morning since July 2011
  • Sunshine Coast 2.0

Meanwhile, the cold snap is predicted to send vegetable prices soaring up to three times normal prices.

The combination of an unusually late start to winter plus a sudden plummet to near-record lows has confused the growing cycles of just about every plant.

Making Fun at Alleged ISIL ‘Passport’*

Making Fun at Alleged ISIL ‘Passport’*

By Hassan Al-Obaidi in Baghdad

Supporters of the “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) have circulated reports in July that the group is allegedly issuing a passport for its so-called “caliphate”, sparking a wave of humorous comments and pictures on social networking sites.

While the existence of the passport itself could not be independently verified, the Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed that ISIL elements stole Iraqi passports in Ninawa and Salaheddine provinces, but insisted that the documents were no longer valid.

Iraq is currently working with the Interpol to ensure no one is able to use the stolen passports, the ministry said.

Iraqi activist Ahmed al-Iraqi ridiculed the idea of a “caliphate” passport, calling it absurd.

Al-Iraqi said he created a Facebook page titled “ISIL crimes” in order to refute the group’s allegations and false fatwas in a humorous way to bring people’s attention to ISIL’s foibles.

“We address ISIL’s funny and stupid fatwas that have nothing to do with Islam,” he told Mawtani.

“Is there a country in the whole world that would want to host them such that they issue passports?” al-Iraqi said. “This is nonsense.”

The fake passport even has a funny slogan, he said.

“They allege that ‘if the holder of this passport is harmed, armies will be mobilised to help him’,” al-Iraqi said.

“This is really comical; they behead people as if they were cutting onions and then claim they care about the nationals of their so-called state and will mobilise armies for them.”

Farid al-Dulaimi, head of Anbar University’s political science department, told Mawtani the wave of ridicule against ISIL is a natural reaction to the group’s fatwas, which contradict reason and logic.

“The claim about issuing a passport is part of funny propaganda,” he said.

“Who would want to host its holders, who prohibit setting satellite dishes to European satellite channels, stop men from wearing jeans and T-shirts, and ban prayers at mosques for people who do not wear the short dishdasha (robe)?”

“These acts and instructions actually make them the object of ridicule,” al-Dulaimi said.

The “passport” is only a media stunt and has no weight in reality, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

ISIL stole some Iraqi passports, along with their official seals, from passport issuing departments in Ninawa and Salaheddine provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

“The stolen Iraqi passports are now invalid and worthless, and therefore cannot be used,” rather they will facilitate the arrest of their holders, the statement said.

Iraq sent Interpol the passports’ serial numbers and instructed all countries to arrest their holders on the spot, it added.

The Real Purpose of the IMF*

The Real Purpose of the IMF*

By Tyler Durden

Too much trumpeting the IMF have kindly agreed to help out desperate and war torn Ukraine. How wonderful they are we are all meant to think, but the truth couldn’t be more opposite.

The International Monetary Fund was set up in 1945, describing itself as an

“organization of 188 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.”

This all sounds very laudable, but in reality the IMF has a very different purpose from that which is stated. If you look at the history of the IMF’s intervention in countries around the world you will see a trail of disaster and looting that repeats time and time again wherever they go.

The many countries that are involved are supposed to have some influence but this is proportional to their financial clout, which in truth means that the USA has most of the control of what happens and many countries have effectively no say at all.

My opinion of the IMF, concurs with that of John Perkins, author of ‘Confessions Of An Economic Hitman’, his views being that of an insider in the system and mine merely as an observer. He succinctly points out that major western nations use financial warfare to get what they want and gain influence over other countries – the IMF being one of the tools with which they do this.

Caribbean countries such as Jamaica have been destroyed by trade agreements and much the same thing has happened throughout Africa, South America and Asia at various times since World War II. What the IMF does is somewhat similar to a thug loan shark. The loan shark lends money to people who can’t afford to borrow so that the borrower ends up having to not eat to make the payments or face having broken legs.

In a more subtle way, the IMF behaves in a similar way. Countries are given a ‘helping hand’ as loans that they will have great difficulty paying back. In return for the loans the IMF wants interest and regular repayments and ‘restructuring’ of the country’s assets. What this actually means is the asset stripping of sovereign nations so that their economic wealth is transferred from the country’s/public’s ownership into private hands.

This has happened in Europe recently, with countries such as Greece, Portugal, Ireland and even Spain and Italy faced with the prospect of having to sell off national assets in order to finance repayment of loans to either the IMF or EU. Private consortiums, owned by the banks or oligarchs buy up a nation’s forests, coal industry, water supply etc so that instead of the country receiving income from its resources the private company makes all the money off the backs of the increasingly impoverished population.

At the moment the Ukrainian people might welcome the IMF but you can be sure that in a short time the country will be financially raped and the population plunged into even worse poverty as a result of IMF ‘assistance’.  Here in Ireland we are realizing the foolishness of the IMF/EU bailouts that is making life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens while the government ponders selling off our resources.

Any country with sense (like Iceland) would show the IMF the door and find a better way of clawing its way out of economic problems. Iceland is a perfect example of how a country could solve its own problems – but no-one in the media talks about this – the corpocracy does not want anyone else getting the same idea. Surely, if every nation took the same actions the corporate takeover of sovereign nations would fall flat on its face wouldn’t it?
