The Pathological State of Britain*

The Pathological State of Britain*

A Pro-Scottish Independence Speech…

By Ria Novosti

The United Kingdom as a rogue state and a danger to the world, a former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray said.

“The British Government is deeply, deeply immoral. They don’t care how many people they kill abroad if it advances them. Anybody who votes No [to Scottish independence] is voting to support a pathological state which is a danger in the world, a rogue state and a state prepared to go to war to make a few people wealthy,”

Murray said in a speech made ahead of an historic vote on Scottish independence to be held in just three weeks.

He told an open public meeting in St Andrews that the actions he witnesses as a senior diplomat had changed his “world view” and said it was now “impossible to be proud of the United Kingdom.”

“I think it is impossible to be proud of the United Kingdom. I think when we invaded Iraq we did to the United Nations what Hitler and Mussolini did to the League of Nations,” Murray added.

“I think what we have done since where the truth is often much hidden, if you look at Libya it is a disaster now we bombed it and we killed 15,000 people when NATO bombed Sirte, something they never told you on the BBC. Did we make it better? No,”

“I’ve seen things from the inside and the UK’s foreign interventions are almost always about resources. It is every bit as corrupt as others have indicated. It is not an academic construct, the system stinks,” a former British Ambassador said.

Murray, who is a member of “English for independence” a group of English born residents living in Scotland who back Scottish independence, said that although he had once been proud to be British, the UK’s involvement in rendition, torture and the invasion of Iraq had altered his allegiance.

“I was a British diplomat for 20 years. I was always very patriotic to be British and I was very, very proud of it,” he stated.

“When I first became a British Ambassador and first went out in my own flag car with the Union Jack flying on the front I had a lump in my throat. It was a proud moment for me. It was only six months after that I discovered that in the country where I was Ambassador we and the Americans were shipping people in order for them to be tortured. Some of them were tortured to death,” Murray added.

“Now as you may imagine, my world view changed,” he added.

“It was at the same time, a month later, that we invaded Iraq against the will of the Security Council. Not just without the permission of the Security Council but in the full knowledge that if it had gone to the Security Council we would have been voted down, “the former diplomat said.

“I know for certain – as I used to be head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office unit that monitored Iraqi weapons of mass destruction – I know for certain that they knew there weren’t any. It wasn’t a mistake, it was a lie,” Murray concluded.

Former Secretary General of NATO, Lord George Robertson earlier warned Scottish independence would have a “cataclysmic” impact on the world.

Robertson, a former British MP, told an audience in the United States, that “the loudest cheers for the break-up of Britain would be from our adversaries and from our enemies. For the second military power in the West to shatter this year would be cataclysmic in geopolitical terms.”

Voters in Scotland will go to the polls on 18th September and will be asked one question, “Should Scotland become an independent country?”

Sunni Clerics Declare Collaborating with ISIL Prohibited under Shari’ah*

Sunni clerics met in Anbar this week to urge Iraqis to support the security forces in their battle against the “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL).

“Collaborating or dealing with ISIL elements is prohibited under shari’ah because it consolidates the continued project of killing and distorts the image of Islam,” the Council of Anbar Scholars and Preachers said in a statement issued following its meeting in Ramadi this week.

The statement, read by council spokesman Sheikh Hatem al-Dulaimi, described co-operation with the Iraqi army as a duty, “to spare bloodshed and to stop the series of crimes that have taken place in the country”.

“It also helps ward off sectarian strife which that gang tries to ignite in Iraqi society,” he said.

ISIL is an aggressor that has nothing to do with any sect or divine religion,” al-Dulaimi added.

ISIL has distorted the image of Islam through its crimes and brutal false beliefs, said council member Sheikh Shaaban al-Obaidi, the imam of Haditha’s city mosque.

“Our religion is mercy and today ISIL turned it into violence, blood and terror,” he told Mawtani, noting that all Muslims must stand up for their faith in the face of these threats.

ISIL ‘should be expelled’

The clerics signed a statement to be distributed across Anbar during their meeting.

Islam is innocent of ISIL, which must be dealt with as a “force of aggression that occupies our land and should be expelled”, the statement said, adding that withholding any information about the group is prohibited under sharia.

“The fight against the group and its rejection by Sunnis will serve as a message to the rest of the sects and religions in Iraq” and will help avoid sectarianism, Ramadi mufti Sheikh Hameed Khalil told Mawtani.

All people should boycott and renounce ISIL, and co-operate with the Iraqi security forces in order to expel the group from their cities, he said.

“It also is forbidden to receive gifts of meat and vegetables, which ISIL said will be distributed to people,” he said. “This is because these are forbidden and mixed with the blood of innocent Iraqi citizens.

“Were it not for their terrorist acts, people would not have originally needed gifts or donations from them,” he added.

“Accepting ISIL means encouraging them and giving them a legitimacy they do not have,” Khalil said.

Iraqis must contact the security forces with any information they have on ISIL, he said, adding that “he who drags his feet or acts in a cowardly manner has participated in the killing of innocent people”.

A turning point in the battle

Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Ahmed al-Dulaimi said the clerics’ statement marked a turning point in the “war on terror”.

“Now there is no doubt these terrorist groups do not represent Sunnis or Islam, and ISIL no longer has a cover through which to move after it was excommunicated from our religion and our beliefs, when it was previously also expelled from our tribal society,” he told Mawtani.

Police are giving those misled by ISIL the chance to turn themselves in before September 5th, al-Dulaimi said.

They will be given a fair trial as well as a pardon if it is proven they did not carry out any murders or bombings, he added.

Calls to Prosecute Foreigners Who Volunteered for Operation Protective Edge*

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki announced on Wednesday that his ministry had sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and to the leaders of other countries, requesting them to bear their responsibility for implementing international law regarding foreigners who volunteered in the Israeli army during the latest assault on Gaza.

Citing the Palestinian foreign ministry statement, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news website reported that in cooperation with human rights organisations, the ministry has found that foreigners volunteered in the Israeli army during the latest aggression and carried out war crimes.

The news website said they took part in the war as part of two programmes called Mahal and Ser-Al. The Palestinian ministry stressed the necessity to prosecute them.

As part of the programmes, Jews and non-Jews who do not hold an Israeli ID can travel to Israel to take part in military service for a year and a half in order to get the ID.

The ministry called for specifying those who volunteered in the Israeli army or helped it, identifying their war crimes and the breaches of international law that they committed through the Israeli army, as well as telling them about the potential criminal responsibility for what they did during the war.

In addition, the ministry called upon those countries where the citizen volunteers are from to prosecute them inside the judicial system of their geographical areas.

Under the framework of international law, “which Israeli cannot evade”, the ministry is also seeking to prosecute everyone who committed war crimes in Gaza, including Israelis.

The ministry called for accelerating the convention of international bodies to require Israel to implement the Fourth Geneva Convention in the occupied Palestinian territories.

A global campaign that calls for isolating Israel internationally due to its controversial policies in the Palestinian territories has drawn supporters from many countries – including Israel itself.

“We want a democratic society, even if it is hard to imagine for us [given] the situation we are in now,” Sahar Vardi, member of the Israel chapter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, told Anadolu Agency.

“All human beings should have equal rights. The formulation – the one- or two-state solution – is less relevant than [the fact] that they should have equal rights,” she said.

Vardi and others have joined the Palestinian-led campaign, which was launched in 2005 and dubbed the “Boycott Within” movement.

Vardi said that campaign members support the Palestinian national cause and call for boycotting Israel in order to hold it accountable for human rights breaches committed in the Palestinian territories.

In hopes of forcing Israel to offer concessions that might realize equal rights for Palestinians, Vardi and her colleagues are calling on the international community to stop supporting Israel – both economically and militarily.

Recently, their voices grew stronger as Israeli forces waged a crippling military onslaught on the blockaded Gaza Strip with the stated aim of halting rocket fire from the Palestinian territory.

At least 2,145 Palestinians have been killed and more than 11,000 others injured – mostly civilians – over the course of the 51-day offensive, which began on July 7.

According to Israeli figures, at least 69 Israelis – 64 soldiers and five civilians – were killed over the same period.

The number of Palestinian fatalities from Israel’s current offensive surpassed the combined death toll from two previous operations against Gaza, including Israel’s 21-day “Operation Cast Lead” in 2008/09 in which at least 1500 Palestinians were killed.

The recent hostilities led to the highest military death toll for Israel since the 2006 war in Lebanon, in which 119 Israeli soldiers were killed.

On Tuesday, an Egypt-brokered ceasefire went into effect, ending more than seven weeks of devastating Israeli bombardments in the small, densely-populated coastal enclave.

-Turning tide-

Elifelet Sara, another member of the BDS campaign’s Israel chapter, believes Israel’s just-ended Gaza war could be a turning point in terms of the international community’s stance on the self-proclaimed Jewish state’s policies.

“The Israeli military attack on Gaza in 2008 was a turning point in many ways. The atrocities of the occupation were so visible; people were shocked,” the 31-year-old activist told AA.

“The terrible images coming out of Gaza right now can hopefully shock the international community,” she said. “That means more and more criticism of Israel.”

Ofer Neiman, a 42-year-old member of the BDS campaign’s Israel chapter, agreed.

He said Israel now has less international support than it had during “Operation Cast Lead” in 2008/09.

“Israel is losing support in the West among ordinary citizens and also [among] young Jews,” he said.

Hundreds of thousands of people had marched in different countries of the world – including the U.S. and Europe – to protest the Israeli onslaught against Gaza.

To turn these sentiments into action, Neiman called on people in the West to seize the opportunity to influence their respective governments’ policies vis-à-vis Israel.

“Previously the Western governments supported Israeli war crimes in Palestine,” he noted.

“People have now the opportunity to change this by going on the street and demanding a new policy towards the Israeli aggressions,” asserted Nemian.

-Root of conflict-

Vardi, for her part, insists that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not a religious one, saying that coexistence between Jews and Muslims has never been an issue in the Palestinian lands.

She noted that her family is from Hebron – the most populated city in West Bank – where Muslims, Jews and Christians used to coexist for centuries.

“My family happens to be Arabic-speaking Jews,” Vardi said.

“They were living in Hebron and things were fine up until this become a nationalist conflict with the Zionist movement,” she recalled.

Palestinian society is also becoming more nationalistic as a reaction to the oppression of their rights, she added.

Vardi went on saying that the Zionist movement came to the Palestinian lands as a nationalist movement to build a nationalist state, which excludes others.

“To have a Jewish state, you need a Jewish majority and by definition you have to exclude others,” she pointed out. “This kind of exclusivity is the root of this conflict.”

The roots of the conflict date back to 1917, when the British government, in the now-famous “Balfour Declaration,” called for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”

Jewish immigration rose considerably under the British administration of Palestine, which began in 1920 and was consolidated by a League of Nations “mandate” in 1922.

In 1948, with the end of the mandate, a new state – Israel – was declared inside historical Palestine.

As a result, some 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes, or were forcibly expelled, while hundreds of Palestinian villages and towns were razed to the ground by Jewish forces.

The Palestinian diaspora has since become one of the largest in the world. Palestinian refugees are currently spread across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and other countries, while many have settled in refugee camps in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza Strip.

On May 15 of each year, Palestinians still commemorate the mass expulsion in 1948, which they refer to as the “nakba” or “catastrophe.”

For many Palestinians, the right to return to their homes in historical Palestine – a right enshrined in U.N. General Assembly Resolution 194 – remains a key demand.

Since its establishment, Israel has continued to misappropriate Palestinian land in the West Bank – on which it continues to build numerous Jewish-only settlements – in breach of international law.

Palestinians, for their part, demand the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with Jerusalem – currently occupied by Israel – as its capital.

Naiman regrets, for his part, that there is no real Israeli opposition against “war crimes, apartheid regime and the massacre in Gaza.”

“Most of the Israeli politicians right now are focused on the Israeli public opinion and I am sorry to say that but the majority of Israeli public want Palestinian blood,” he said.

And Vardi agrees.

“I am not psychologist,” she told AA. “So I can’t tell you whether Israeli thirst for blood has been quenched yet or not.”

Federal Cybersecurity Head Convicted Of Child Porn Charges*

By Tyler Durden

The following story is a warning as to why centralized power is so dangerous. It doesn’t matter whether the power is political or corporate, overly centralized power in all forms must be resisted whenever it appears. The worst of all worlds is when centralized political and corporate power unite in an unholy alliance, which is what has happened to America in recent decades. When this occurs, the combined forces of oligarchy simply begin to rapaciously feast on the citizenry with zero accountability. This is a fair description of the United States in 2014.

The primary problem with centralized power is that sociopaths (for obvious reasons) gravitate toward, and greatly covet, positions of power. Once entrenched in such positions, they are able to act upon their perversions with general immunity, and if they are caught, are often left in positions of power by others who at that point “own them” via blackmail. This of course is nothing new, it is how the game of power, politics and economics has been played since the beginning of time. It is also why decentralization of power is the natural evolution we as a species must embrace in order to build a better world.

Enter Timothy DeFoggi, the one-time cybersecurity director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who received several awards for his government “service” over the years. The self-proclaimed man of “many perversions,” frequented a child porn site called PedoBook where he “exchanged private messages with other members expressing interest in raping, beating and murdering infants and toddlers.”

More from Wired:

As the acting cybersecurity chief of a federal agency, Timothy DeFoggi should have been well versed in the digital footprints users leave behind online when they visit web sites and download images.

But DeFoggi—convicted today in Nebraska on three child porn charges including conspiracy to solicit and distribute child porn—must have believed his use of the Tor anonymizing network shielded him from federal investigators.

But DeFoggi’s conviction is perhaps more surprising than others owing to the fact that he worked at one time as the acting cybersecurity director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. DeFoggi worked for the department from 2008 until January this year. A department official told Business Insider that DeFoggi worked in the office of the assistant secretary for administration as lead IT specialist but a government budget document for the department from this year(.pdf) identifies a Tim DeFoggi as head of OS IT security operations, reporting to the department’s chief information security officer.

Although anyone could use the sites, registered users like DeFoggi—who was known online under the user names “fuckchrist” and “PTasseater”—could set up profile pages with an avatar, often child porn images, and personal information and upload files. The site archived more than 100 videos and more than 17,000 child porn and child erotica images, many of them depicting infants and toddlers being sexually abused by adults.

DeFoggi became part of that sting after becoming a registered member of PedoBook in March 2012 where he remained active until December that year when the FBI shuttered it. During this time DeFoggi, who described himself as “having many perversions,” solicited child porn images from other members, viewed images and exchanged private messages with other members expressing interest in raping, beating and murdering infants and toddlers.

DeFoggi received many commendations during his government career, according to an exhibit list created by the government for his trial. The list includes several certificates of award from the U.S. Treasury, a certificate of appreciation from the State Department for his work on a Hurricane Katrina task force, several documents related to computer courses he attended and certifications he received.

Above the Law: The Shooting of Kajieme Powell

Above the Law: The Shooting of Kajieme Powell

From Alexandra Bruce
The entire event of the partially-point-blank-range killing of Kajieme Powell, 25 on August 19th by “Peace Officers” who are paid to protect the communities they serve, not to kill its members was recorded on video by a cellphone.

In a city still reeling with revolts over the police killing of unarmed teenager, Michael Brown, just ten days earlier, these events certainly prove that the local police had learned nothing, after ten days of outrage and revolts.

They felt so immune from prosecution that they believed that they were totally above the law. This video also proves that they lied – and that it incredibly unsafe to be a young black man in Greater Metro area of St. Louis, Missouri.

The policemen who killed Kajieme Powell in this video claimed that he was lurching at them with a “steak knife,” with his arms “raised high”. They further claimed that he was within 3 feet of them but the video clearly shows that he was about 15 feet away when they began to fire upon him – but that yes, by the time he’d fallen off a berm and rolled onto the sidewalk – and the police were into their final shots of thedozen bullets which hit him, he was THEN three feet away from the cops.

At no time during Powell’s interaction with the police were his arms “raised high,” even as the police instantly escalated the situation, by jumped out of their truck with guns drawn, as if the only thing they could even imagine doing was to kill the guy. Powell’s arms were down by his sides – and the “steak knife” must have been pretty small, because it is not even visible in this video.

Powell looked like he needed mental help, not killing.

But the clincher is this: the fact that these “Peace Officers” handcuffed Powell, when he was already deader-than-a-doornail proves to me that they KNEW that they were guilty and were hastily trying to cover it up, to the rightfully cynical comments of onlookers.

In my opinion, the perpetrators of Powell’s shooting death should all be fired and tried for murder.

A Wounded ISIL Fighter Meets his Benefactor, Netanyahu in Golan Heights*

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon next to a wounded mercenary, Israeli military field hospital at the occupied Golan Heights’ border with Syria, 18 February 2014″ (Jerusalem Post, February 19, 2014. For more see Michel Chossudovsky, “Justified Vengeance”, The Pretext for Bombing Gaza: Was the Netanyahu Government behind the Killings of the Three Israeli Teenagers?)

The United Nations says 43 of its peacekeepers have been detained by “armed elements” fighting in the Golan Heights, the Associated Press reports.

An additional 81 UN soldiers are “currently being restricted to their positions in the vicinity of Ar Ruwayhinah and Burayqah,” according to the office of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The “armed elements” in Syria consist almost exclusively of jihadist groups, most notably ISIS and al-Nusra. ISIS was trained by the United States and al-Nusra was armed by the CIA, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

On Wednesday ISIS and al-Nusra took control of the Quneitra crossing point at the demarcation line on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The action puts the al-Qaeda inspired groups within 200 yards of territory captured by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967.

DEBKAfile, an Israeli intelligence asset, reports the ISIS and al-Nusra effort to wrest control of the border area away from the Syrian army was assisted by Israel, Jordan and the United States:

Israel acted as a member, along with the US and Jordan, of a support system for rebel groups [ISIS, al-Nusra] fighting in southern Syria. Their efforts are coordinated through a war-room which the Pentagon established last year near Amman. The US, Jordanian and Israeli officers manning the facility determine in consultation which rebel factions are provided with reinforcements from the special training camps run for Syrian rebels in Jordan, and which will receive arms.

In December, it was reported by The National that a secret command centre in Jordan, staffed by western and Arab military officials, provides support to jihadist groups fighting on Syria’s southern front. The intelligence centre “channels vehicles, sniper rifles, mortars, heavy machine guns, small arms and ammunition to Free Syrian Army units.”

Large numbers of fighters from the Free Syrian Army have defected to al-Nusra over the last year. “Fighters are heading to al-Nusra because of its Islamic doctrine, sincerity, good funding and advanced weapons,” Abu Islam of the FSA’s al-Tawhid brigade in Aleppo told The Guardian in May, 2013.

In June, al-Nusra and ISIS joined forces.

The same month Aaron Klein of WorldNetDaily reported U.S. instructors had trained members of ISIS in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country’s northern desert region.
