How Sick Can You Get – $6 billion to Rebuild Gaza to be Resourced by Israel*

How Sick Can You Get – $6 billion to Rebuild Gaza to be Resourced by Israel*

As the world gears up to finance Gaza’s $6bn reconstruction after Operation Protective Edge, an EU source has revealed that Israel will earn billions of euros by making sure that all the steel, concrete and other materials and other aid are sourced in Israel and benefit Israeli companies.

“It is outrageous that a country which has just demolished 25,000 houses is demanding that their construction industry benefit from rebuilding them at the expense of the international community.

At least 65,000 people in the Gaza Strip are homeless after the recent seven-week conflict. Infrastructure ranging from water desalination centres to power plants lies in ruins.

No formal Israeli ban prevents the import of reconstruction materials that were not made in Israel, but EU sources speaking on condition of anonymity say that in practice, Israeli security demands present them with a fait accompli.

“If you want aid materials to be permitted to enter, they will almost inevitably come from Israeli sources”, an EU official said.

“I don’t think you’ll find it written down anywhere in official policy, but when you get to negotiate with the Israelis, this is what happens. It increases construction and transaction costs, and is a political problem that has to be dealt with.”

As well as Israel’s security restrictions on aid,

”it can be very difficult to export materials to Gaza”, the official said.

”A lot of goods for a Gaza private sector reconstruction project we had, ended up being held in Ashdod port for very lengthy periods of time – months if not years – so there was de facto no alternative but to use Israeli sources.”

The source added that the policy had benefited Israel’s economy to the tune of millions of euros and was, in his view, deliberate.

The European Commission donates some €300 million in development aid to Gaza and the West Bank every year, and around €200 million in humanitarian aid.

The EU official’s allegation received backing from international agencies canvassed by EurActiv and is broadly in line with findings in a UN report due to be published later today (3 September).

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) study will say that half of all donor assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza – who the UN body say constitute a captive market – is spent on servicing a trade deficit to Israel.

Tel Aviv imposed a full blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007 after the ascent to power of the Islamist Hamas movement, which has used suicide bombing and rocket attack tactics against Israel’s occupation, that have claimed hundreds of civilian lives.

But the UN and international NGOs have protested the blockade’s prevention of free movement and trade for the vast majority of Gazans as a collective punishment.

Building materials such as steel and cement, necessary for the reconstruction of Gaza, have been designated by Israel as ‘dual use’ items – adaptable for munitions – that may only be imported to Gaza by the UN and aid agencies under Israeli supervision.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for the Israeli prime ministers’ office, denied claims that Israel’s entry policy to Gaza prevented non-Israeli-made reconstruction materials from entering the Strip.

“I know that policy, and it is not true”, he told EurActiv over the phone from Jerusalem. He was unable though to give examples of non-Israeli reconstruction materials allowed into Gaza, referring inquiries on to Cogat.

The Israeli body, Cogat, which coordinates the entry of aid into Gaza, did not respond to requests for comment.

But ”there are not many choices”, Amir Rotem, the public affairs director for Gisha, an Israeli NGO, told EurActiv. ”The Israeli market has a monopoly of cement in just one company, and I don’t know of any Palestinian-made cement in the West Bank, so there’s not much to choose from.”

‘Chutzpah writ large’

International reactions to the EU official’s claims were strong.

“It is outrageous that a country which has just demolished 25,000 houses is demanding that their construction industry benefit from rebuilding them at the expense of the international community”, one Western diplomat told EurActiv.

“Talk about chutzpah writ large!” he said.

Mahmoud el-Khafif, UNCTAD’s special coordinator for assistance to the Palestinian people, told EurActiv that he believed the EU official’s claims were correct.

“If you look at steel or cement, I think the only source for it would be Israel”, he said. ”It is a serious problem in my opinion as an economist. What happened in Gaza and what is happening in the West Bank in terms of controlling Area C is an ongoing process to reduce the ability of the Palestinian economy to produce, and the only alternative is to import from Israel.”

Later today, a new UNCTAD report will say that economic growth (measured by GDP) in the economy of the occupied Palestinian Territories declined from 11% in 2011 to just 1.5% last year, far below the rate of population growth.

‘An unliveable place before 2020′

Even before the recent fighting, unemployment in Gaza was running at 36% and people were poorer than in the 1990s, when the Oslo peace process began.

Rebuilding the battered Strip now will take 20 years under the current regime of restrictions, according to a report published earlier this week by Shelter Cluster, an NGO chaired by the Norwegian Refugee Council, with the participation of the UNHCR and the International Red Cross.

That could be too late for many Gazans. The UN’s relief and works agency (UNRWA) has previously estimated that Gaza will not be ”a liveable place” by 2020 because of population increase and a depletion of fresh water sources by 2016.

“lf Gaza was going to be an unliveable place by 2020 – before the latest fighting – it will now be an unliveable place considerably before then”, Christopher Gunness, a spokesman for UNRWA told EurActiv, from the Gaza Strip.

“With at least 20,000 homes damaged or destroyed, with miles of water infrastructure devastated, with millions of gallons of raw sewage flowing into the sea every day, and the corrosive impacts of blockade, the sustainability of Gaza will be even more short lived”, he said.

More than 2,100 Palestinians – mostly civilians – were killed in Israel’s recent Operation Protective Edge, as were 73 Israelis – mostly soldiers.

The international reconstruction effort in Gaza could cost more than $6 billion, according to the Palestinian deputy prime minister.

Free European Army in Defence of Ukraine against NATO and EU*

This video makes it look and sound like Donetsk is being freed by Kiev to go and form its own independent government.  Own judges, own administration, even an amnesty, except the amnesty won’t apply to the soldiers who are whooping Kiev’s backside harder than they expected.

Many of the soldiers fighting in East Ukraine are from Britain, France, Germany, Holland and other European countries.  They are called The Free European Army.

This Free European Army is fighting against NATO and the EU to free fellow Europeans from totalitarian rule and genocidal war.  We should all be siding with them against the people we were once convinced were our own armed forces.  NATO means NAZI.  EU means EUSSR.  Freedom for us all from these evils might have to come from the barrel of a gun.  For east Ukrainians, now citizens of the Donetsk region, it already does.

Death by Vaccine: 34 Syrian Children Die*

Death by Vaccine: 34 Syrian Children Die*

Remember the warning last year at the height of the attempt to destabilize Syria?

At least 34 children have died in rebel-held Syria after being injected with contaminated measles vaccines, the rebel government said on Tuesday, warning that the deaths might be caused by saboteurs linked to the Assad regime.

The death toll is expected to rise, with many children from eight towns in Idlib province, north-west Syria, still in intensive care on Tuesday night.

Parents accused opposition health authorities of failing to store the vaccines properly, and of supplying out-of-date medication. But opposition officials denied accusations of negligence, saying that the vaccines came from UNICEF and WHO, via the Turkish government, and that the same batch had successfully vaccinated 60,000 schoolchildren in 30 locations in recent days.

Instead, the opposition health ministry attributed the deaths to foul play, with health minister Adnan Hazouri promising to resign if an investigation upheld allegations of negligence.

“Primary investigations point to a limited security breach by vandals likely connected to the regime, which has been attempting to target the medical sector in Free Syria in order to spread chaos,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The symptoms don’t just indicate spoiled vaccines – it suggests they’ve been contaminated,” Bashar Kayal, another health official, told Radio Hawa Smart, a Syrian-focused station based across the border in Gaziantep, Turkey.

Blood samples have been sent to Turkey for analysis, and the vaccination programme suspended. These moves have done little to convince parents in Idlib province, who fear many more children might be affected.

But the head of Idlib’s medical department, Monther Khalil, claimed the worst was over. “The department assures all parents who have had their children vaccinated that the vaccine is completely fine and there is no risk to children who have already been injected,” Khalil told Radio Hawa Smart, a Syrian-focused station based across the border in Gaziantep, Turkey.

“We have already vaccinated 60,000 children against measles and there has been no previous problem. The same crews also previously carried out a polio campaign, where they vaccinated 252,000 children across seven rounds, and there were no abnormal complications.”

Idlib province is held by moderate rebel groups opposed to both Syria’s dictator, Bashar al-Assad, and the extremist Islamic State (Isis). The area was the subject of a fierce military campaign earlier this year, which saw the rebels regain control.

The Syrian civil war has already claimed the lives of over 191,000 Syrians, and created more than three million refugees. The US is currently rallying global support.

When You Can’t See the Woods for the Trees, Laugh*

By David Swanson

If members of the U.S. public were ever to wonder what the other 95% of humanity thinks about them, would it be better to break that harsh truth to them gently or just to blurt it out?

I’m going to go with the latter.

Here’s Frankie Boyle explaining the advantages of Scottish independence: “Scotland would no longer have to invade places like Afghanistan for American interests. . . . I don’t support America’s wars. I don’t even think they are wars. They’re one-way traffic, mass-murder. There’s never been a time when a shepherd has beaten a helicopter. You never switch on the news to see ‘A shock result in Afghanistan today when a missile was destroyed by a wedding.’ Because not only will America go into your country and kill all your people. But what’s worse I think is they’ll come back twenty years later and make a movie about how killing your people made their soldiers feel sad. Oh boo hoo hoo. Americans making a movie about what Vietnam did to the soldiers is like a serial killer telling you what stopping suddenly for hitchhikers did to his clutch.”

If you don’t think people find such remarks acceptable, listen to this laughter:

Living in the United States we’ve been trained to appreciate the fact that the wars do in fact make the soldiers feel sad. In fact they significantly increase rates of depression and violence and suicide. We tell each other not to blame the soldiers, rather to blame the top politicians. But then we don’t really do that, do we? Bush is off painting himself in the bathtub and otherwise doing his imitation of the original King George III during his blue urine period. Obama is cheered by his fans because his wars make him sad and he declares them with such heartfelt reluctance. But from the point of view of people who are told about non-American deaths in their newspapers and on their televisions and radios (that is, from the point of view of 95% of humanity) U.S. wars are mass-slaughter of innocents. Ninety percent of the deaths are on one side. Ninety percent of those deaths are civilians by every definition. When the U.S. says it’s going to launch another war because it opposes genocide, the rest of the world responds “We what the f%^$^! do you call your wars?”

Think the rest of the world is crazy? Think it’s just bad jokes that miss the serious complicated facts of the matter. Watch how an intelligent Englishman watches an Obama speech:

Or how an American comedian views U.S. foreign policy:

When an American gets honest about U.S. warmongering it has to be a joke. It has to sneak in. We don’t want to hear it. But we shouldn’t keep imagining the rest of the world doesn’t know what’s going on.

U.S. Excludes Syria When Syria has Made Great Strides against ISIL*

As Iran commented the U.S. coalition against ISIL is farcical, so how can they exclude Damascus from a recent conference on ISIL held in Jeddah and Paris? Iraqi and Syrian force have made great co-ordinated triumphs over the Israeli-US takfiri elements. It leads to the next question; does the U.S. coalition have another agenda? Does Syria belong to Syrians? Which country knows the terrain better than Syria? Which country is better equipped intelligence-wise to flush out Syrian elements? How will they determine a civilian from an ISIL member? Will they disrupt the Iraqi-Syrian joint efforts? If the U.S. coalition gets attacked who will they blame? Is ISIL the Trojan horse for the U.S. coalition? Take note in the sudden increase in anti-Syria propaganda – the same garbage that was being disseminated last year!

Might has no strength over right when common sense has flown out of the window. That era is drawing to a close and the U.S. coalition/NATO/New World Order just might be getting more than they bargained for… They have been doing it for so long that they are incapable of doing anything more productive…

Syrian Army Kills 37 ISIL Takfirists in Deir al-Zor Province

The Syrian Army has killed 37 ISIL militants in the north-eastern province Deir al-Zor, Lebanese TV channel Al-Manar reported on Tuesday.

According to media reports, the militants were killed during an offensive, launched by Syrian government forces in al-Arfi region. Fierce fighting caused the collapse of several buildings where the extremists were hiding.

After several days of continuous fighting, and the liberation of the city of Al-Bukamal in Deir al-Zor province, most Islamic State field commanders retreated to the Syria-Iraq border.

The Islamic Group militants have been attempting to seize a Syrian air base in Deir al-Zor since early September. However after the Syrian army destroyed a strategically important bridge on Monday, the position of the government forces has improved.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, it launched an offensive in Iraq and seized vast areas in both countries, proclaiming an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control.
