Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven announced on Friday that his country will become the first European Union country to recognize the state of Palestine.

The United Nations General Assembly approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine in 2012 however, the European Union has yet to give official recognition.

The Social democrat leader said during his inaugural address in parliament,

“The conflict between Israel and Palestine can only be solved with a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law.” He continued,

“A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine.”

Palestinians have advocated for an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza with the capital in East Jerusalem. Negotiations are currently suspended with Israel making the definitions of the two state’s boundaries unclear.

Other European countries such as Poland, Romania and Slovakia have already recognized the state of Palestine however, they made the decision before incorporating into the 28 member bloc.

If Sweden follows through with this decision, some anticipate criticism from Israel as well as the United States and the EU. They maintain that an independent Palestinian state should only come out of a negotiated process.
