Paid Sick Leave Back in*

Paid Sick Leave Back in*

By Annie-Rose Strasser

Last night, four places in the United States voted over whether or not employers should be required to give paid sick leave to employees. All four approved the idea.

Massachusetts was the biggest win for paid sick leave advocates — the state is just the third in the nation to require employers grant people such paid time off, following California and Connecticut. The state was joined by three major municipalities: Trenton, NJ; Montclair, NJ; and Oakland, CA (though the state has a paid sick leave law, Oakland’s will expand on it). All told, the laws will impact more than one million workers.

These latest votes follow a recent uptick in guaranteed paid time off for the sick, which has found its way into law by any number of means, including ballot initiative, city ordinance, or legislation. At the end of last year, only one state and 6 cities had required paid sick leave. Now, the total is three states and 16 cities:

New Jersey in particular has been a beacon for paid sick leave initiatives, thanks to an organized campaign on the ground there. Organizers say they learned from New York City’s movement for paid sick leave, and have had success targeting not the state as a whole but rather progressive communities within it.

“We agreed that it was going to be very difficult to get the governor to sign a statewide bill,” Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, the executive director of New Jersey Citizen Action, Covert earlier this year. But

“we had two quite progressive mayors in Jersey City and in Newark… We knew that they could institute it as an ordinance in their cities, as opposed to having to wait for a state bill.”

But the pro-business motivation that drives opposition to paid sick leave may be misguided. Evidence from the early pioneers on paid sick leave indicate that there are very few costs, if any, to employers in providing paid sick leave. And indeed there may be benefits; when San Francisco approved paid sick leave, for example, the city saw business growth. Similarly, in Seattle, job growth has been better since the city’s law took effect

Hawaiian Victory over Monsanto*

Hawaiian Victory over Monsanto*

By Lauren McCauley

Residents of Maui County in Hawaii, frequently referred to as ‘GMO Ground Zero,’ claimed a victory Tuesday evening when a measure to ban the planting of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) passed with 50.2%.

Agribusiness giants Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences, which for decades have run enormous growing and testing operations on the island, spent nearly $8 million dollars to defeat the ban, making it the most expensive campaign in Hawaii’s history, according to Honolulu Civil Beat.

Known as the Maui County Genetically Modified Organism Moratorium Initiative, the measure will ban all GMO growth, testing or cultivation in the county until an environmental and public health study is conducted and finds the proposed cultivation practices to be safe and harmless.

“I think that this is a really strong message to the entire agrochemical industry in the state of Hawaii that we are no longer going to sit idly by and watch them expand their operations without the kinds of regulations that ensure the health and safety of people across Hawaii,” Ashley Lukens, who directs the Hawaii chapter of the Center for Food Safety, told Civil Beat.

Hawaiians have become increasingly concerned over GMO crop production and how its associated heavy pesticide use impacts the health of both people and environment. Over 80 different chemicals are sprayed on GMO fields, which ban proponents warn, creates billions of untested chemical combinations which then spread into “our neighborhoods, oceans, reefs, groundwater, drinking water, food supply and bodies.”

Last year, the Hawaiian Department of Health tested the surface water around the island and pesticides were found in 100 percent of the samples. According to official election results, the moratorium passed with just over 1,000 votes. In comparison to the millions raised in industry dollars by ban opposition group Citizens Against the Maui County Farming Ban (CAMCFB), supporters of the initiative raised just under $65,000.

A GMO ban also passed in the community of Humboldt County, California on Tuesday, marking the third county in California to pass such a prohibition. Efforts to mandate the labeling of GMOs faced a windfall in outside, industry spending in both Colorado in Oregon. In Colorado—where corporate contributions lead by Monsanto and DuPont Pioneer topped $16 million—the measure lost 66.78 to 33.22%…

As of Tuesday afternoon, the race over Measure 92 in Oregon was still too close to call, with the opposition leading 50.9 – 49.1% with 86.3% of votes counted. Multinational food and agriculture companies such as PepsiCo and Monsanto poured over $18 million into that race, shattering previous election spending records.

Organic food advocates say that the huge number of people who did back the labeling measures, despite industry-led misinformation campaigns, made it “clear that the GMO labeling movement is growing stronger with each of these initiatives.”

As Katherine Paul, communications coordinator for the Organic Consumers Association, told Common Dreams: “Change doesn’t happen overnight. But as we’ve seen with other movements (women’s right to vote, gay marriage) over time, the will of the people ultimately overcomes the opposition—even opponents like Monsanto that can, and do, spend millions to protect corporate power.”

“The science is on our side,” Paul continued, noting that in addition to the impacts from the countless toxic chemical combinations, GMO crops have also been linked to numerous chronic illnesses.

“It’s only a matter of time before no amount of spending by Monsanto and Pepsi will be able to suppress the evidence against our industrial model of toxic monoculture crops.”

A Canadian Cabinet Minister and the Ninth Circle Cult*

A Canadian Cabinet Minister and the Ninth Circle Cult*

Senior Canadian cabinet minister exposed as participant in Ninth Circle sacrificial cult along with mafia-tied catholic Cardinal – Both men named at February 22 cult ritual in Rome.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s senior cabinet minister for Quebec and the head of the powerful Privy Council, Denis Lebel, was present at the cult ritual killing of a child in Rome on February 22 of this year, according to evidence given to ITCCS officials last week by an eyewitness.

Lebel was in Rome at the head of an official Canadian delegation to the inauguration of Quebec Archbishop Gerald Lacroix, who was ordained a Cardinal by Jesuit Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, earlier that same day of February 22, 2014.

Cardinal Gerald Lacroix of Quebec and St Pius The Tenth Society

Cardinal Lacroix was also present at the Ninth Circle ritual attended by Denis Lebel, according to an eyewitness.

The witness claims that the incident involved the serial anal rape and killing of “a little boy about five or six” and took place at midnight in basement chambers of the Jesuit-run International Youth Centre within the Church San Lorenzo Piscibus in Rome, less than a mile from the Vatican.

Cardinal Lacroix is also believed to have been scheduled to participate in the Ninth Circle sacrificial ritual in Westmount, Quebec on August 15 that was disrupted by an ITCCS special action unit. (see, August 20, 2014)

“That isn’t the first child sacrifice at San Lorenzo” claims the eyewitness.

“It’s right next door to the (Jesuit) Superior General’s (Adolfo Pachon’s) office. It happens especially in that month since February 21 and 22 are the ancient Roman festivals of Feralia and Terminalia, when animals and children were sacrificed in memory of the dead.”

The same Cardinal Gerald Lacroix is a member of the notorious St. Pius X Society (SSPX) an extreme right wing catholic cult closely tied to the Ndrangheta crime syndicate and neo Nazis connected to rogue catholic Archbishop Bernard Fellay. The present Pope Francis, Jorge Bergoglio, is in negotiations with Fellay to have his SSPX cult readmitted into the Roman Catholic Church.

According to ITCCS North American Field Secretary Kevin Annett, this latest exposure of Minister Lebel’s ties to the Ninth Circle and Cardinal Lacroix was likely behind the October 22 staged shooting of a soldier in Canada’s capital, and the murder of an Ottawa police investigator by the Ndrangheta three weeks before.

“I’ve learned that ITCCS Directors received the evidence of the February 22 ritual involving Lebel and Lacroix on Monday, October 20. The staged killing of Ottawa soldier Nathan Cirillo occurred two days later. The government’s talk of new police powers and the media hysteria that followed Cirillo’s shooting were an obvious distraction from this news of Lebel and Lacroix, that could easily topple the Harper government. Denis Lebel is crucial right now in Harper’s upcoming election hopes to win Quebec for his party.

“Ultimately this is all about covering for the big money, which means the Ndrangheta syndicate, that provides the children for the Ninth Circle rituals and who killed Ottawa police inspector Kal Ghadban on September 28 after he’d helped stop the Westmount ritual in August. Apparently, Ghadban knew of Denis Lebel’s and Gerald Lacroix’s invovlement in the Ninth Circle ritual and he planned to bring charges against both men.” (, October 1, 2014)

“Big money” includes as well Minister Lebel’s ties to those global resource companies affected by his decisions as federal Transport and Infrastructure minister: companies like Power Corporation, Cargill, Sinclair Oil and others whose officers have been named as participants in child trafficking and Ninth Circle sacrificial rites. (see , September 28, 2014)

The ITCCS and its Canadian affiliates plan to establish an ongoing inquiry into the Lebel – Lacroix connection, the murder of Officer Kal Ghadban, and the role of Ndrangheta and the Vatican in the Harper government’s false flag operations.

With Oligarchs in power, this is what U.S. allies paid billions to create! A case of the desired end ‘justifies’ the means?

By Simran Khosla

If you thought the ballot box would heal Ukraine, you were wrong, at least for now.

The past week has been election season for the troubled nation. On Oct. 26, the central Ukrainian government held parliamentary elections in which voters emphatically rejected radical candidates from both the left and right in favor of pro-Western moderates. Not to be outdone, on Nov. 2, pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine held their own elections in the self-declared “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk. Western governments and Kyiv denounced the election, noting that it violated the Sept. 5 ceasefire agreement and warning Russia to stay out of it. Russia responded by voicing support for Donetsk and Luhansk, but stopped short of fully recognizing the regions as independent.

One question is: What will these elections mean for the hundreds and thousands of Ukrainians who’ve been displaced by conflict?

At the beginning of September, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)  estimated that 260,000 people had been displaced within Ukraine by Russia’s annexation of Crimea and by the fighting in eastern Ukraine. (These GIFs show how that number grew over the summer.)

Now, OCHA says the number of internally displaced persons is much higher: 430,000. (That’s roughly the population of Raleigh, North Carolina). Co-ordinating the effort to relocate that many people has been difficult, to say the least. According to OCHA, 5.2 million Ukrainians live in areas affected by conflict, and OCHA expects more of them to become internally displaced as fighting continues.

The chart below shows you where those 430,059 IDPs now reside in Ukraine:

Caring for Ukrainian refugees isn’t just a national issue. Many Ukrainians have looked to neighboring countries for safe haven. The highest number of externally displaced people reside in Russia. According to OCHA, “most have left with few belongings and are in need of shelter, food and non-food assistance, placing pressure on neighboring nations.”

The Ukrainian Parliament recently adopted a new law that OCHA hopes will make the process of identifying and assisting internally displaced people in Ukraine easier. It’s a complicated process for many reasons, OCHA says:

Unfortunately, the current procedure is paper-based, leading to lack of efficiency, possible duplication, long lines and delays. UN monitoring indicates that one administrator can register an average of only 16 people per day and applicants must wait in two different lines to register and receive financial aid. The international community continues to lobby for web-based registration in Kyiv and the regions to ensure effective response nation-wide.

The country is also facing a serious medical crisis. OCHA reports that, “Ukraine’s pharmaceutical supply is on the verge of collapse with almost no medicines available.” The Ministry of Health in Ukraine has called for UN support to replenish vital medicines for tuberculosis, HIV, diabetes and other diseases.
