For Foiling U.S. Coups, U.S. Slap Sanctions on Venezuela*

More Latin American countries rallied behind Venezuela Tuesday to condemn new U.S. sanctions against the South American nation.

Ecuador’s Mashi Rafael calls US sanctions on Venezuela ‘a bad joke’

The Cuban government has slammed the U.S. sanctions as “arbitrary and aggressive.”

“How is Venezuela a threat to the United States? Thousands of kilometres away, without strategic weapons and without the resources … to conspire against the U.S. constitutional order; the (White House) declaration has little credibility,” read a statement published in newspaper Granma.

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro has also praised Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s “brilliant and valiant” response to what he described as “brutal” U.S. plans against Venezuela. The comments were made in a short letter to Maduro on Monday night.

Earlier in the day, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales said the regional blocs CELAC and UNASUR should immediately hold an “emergency meeting,” arguing the U.S. sanctions pose a threat to “all of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

“We condemn, we repudiate, in the 21st Century we won’t accept this kind of intervention by the United States,” Morales said.

“All of our solidarity and our support goes to President Maduro, and the revolutionary Bolivarian government and people of Venezuela.”

UNASUR’s head and other regional leaders including Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa have already slammed the White House’s decision to impose more sanctions on Venezuela.

On Monday, President Barack Obama declared Venezuela an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States.

Obama also issued sanctions on several high ranking Venezuelan government officials. The measures were issued under an executive order. In the past, the Obama administration has condemned Maduro for using executive orders to pass legislation.

“We believe the separation of powers and the presence of independent branches of government are essential elements of democracy,” a White House spokesperson said in 2013, after Maduro used an executive order to pass legislation aimed at stabilizing consumer prices.

Founding fathers of the Non-Aligned Movement: From left: Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Sukarno of Indonesia and Josef Broz Tito of Yugoslavia.

I look around my country today and see that India has become a very ‘wannabe white’ (i.e. Anglo-American) society. I guess we can blame that on our history as a British colony. Still, we won independence and then, for a while, ours was an anti-imperialist country, headed by the likes of Nehru, who refused to acknowledge Israel and founded – along with Sukarno, Tito, Nasser and Nkrumah – the anti-imperialist Non-Aligned Movement that represented a united ‘Global South’.

Sadly, things changed after the assassination of our Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in 1984 (whom Nixon and Kissinger really hated). Her son, Rajiv Gandhi, became our next PM, riding on a wave of sympathy following his mother’s assassination. He was married to Antonia Maino, better known as Sonia Gandhi, daughter of an Italian Nazi, and alleged by many to be a CIA agent sent to infiltrate the Gandhi family.

Rajiv Gandhi began cosying up to Ronald Reagan and improving Indo-U.S. relations. In December 1984, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters, the Bhopal Gas Leak, happened. According to many estimates, it went on to kill over 15,000 people while injuring another 50,000. Many thousands more (including those born much later to the victims) have been suffering from various diseases and disabilities.

The Bhopal gas factory was owned by U.S. corporation Union Carbide (later taken over by Dow Chemicals, and which now contributes funds to our two main neo-liberal parties, Congress and BJP). So what did PM Rajiv Gandhi do? Instead of seeing to it that Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson was prosecuted, Rajiv personally escorted Anderson on a flight back home to the U.S. (where Anderson enjoyed a long, prosperous life, until last year, when he died at the age of 94).

Later on, Rajiv Gandhi and many in his coterie lost public support because of their involvement in the Bofors scam, in which they received kickbacks for importing Swedish weapons. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE (Tamil Tigers) militants in 1991, but his protégé Manmohan Singh (future PM from 2004 to 2014), known to have connections in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, was made finance minister of India.

Manmohan Singh destroyed Nehru’s socialism by embracing the famous free-market reforms of 1991. Funny how this happened to the USSR and Yugoslavia at the same time. A few months later, by early 1992, India finally started having diplomatic relations with Israel (and Israel today is India’s largest supplier of defense equipment – after Russia, that is). ‘Thanks’ to those ‘free-market reforms’ of 1991, Western multinationals started coming in from left, right and centre. From having three state-run channels both on TV and radio, suddenly there was a plethora of private TV channels, both from India and overseas.

Because there was no RT or Press TV or CCTV back then, the large majority of English-speaking Indians took a fancy to CNN and the BBC. Because English is the foreign language understood by most here, people also took a fancy to Hollywood movies and TV shows. There were also various multinationals that gave employment to many, the salaries were lucrative, and some also got recruited to work in the West.

And so, US ‘soft power’ succeeded in re-colonizing us Indians (especially the generation born post-1970s). Today, almost all English-speaking Indians consider the US-UK to be ‘bastions’ of ‘Democracy, Equality, Secularism, Free Speech and Human Rights’. Even other poor and working class Indians are in awe of the West. Indians living/working in NATO countries (especially the US, Canada and the UK) are treated as deities over here.

A large majority of Indians supported the invasions of Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. A substantial number among us back Israel, have no idea how and why the Taliban was created by the British and American security services in cahoots with the Pakistani ISI, and consider ISIS to be a bigger threat than Saudi Arabia and the NATO corporate oligarchy.

People like Nehru are hated by our increasingly right-wing Hindu middle class because he was ‘a socialist’ and ‘secularist’ and wasn’t ‘friends’ with the West. Shakespeare is far more popular than Dostoyevsky, and Dickens is far more popular than Tolstoy. Our secular elite reveres CIA stooges like Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama… because the West venerates them.

We have pathological liars like Arundhati Roy and Pankaj Mishra, who are ‘celebrated’ as dissenters in many Western universities and media organisations for demeaning and maligning India with lies, half-truths colonial clichés. Western puppets like Greenpeace, PETA and Amnesty International are seen as ‘saviours’ and ‘heroes’ by our English-speaking class. A NATO sham like the Nobel Peace Prize is seen as an achievement to be celebrated. Such is the success of the indoctrination of Western corporate media and pop culture on Indian minds.

Last year, we elected (for the first time) a right-wing party i.e. BJP, with an overwhelming majority in our parliament. Our current PM Modi is a right-wing Hindu, an Israel supporter, a neo-liberal, and a big admirer of the US (no wonder he invited Obama to become the first US President to be chief guest at our Republic Day parade on January 26th this year). Modi and his right-wing political party BJP have a lot of backers and sponsors in the US (mainly via the Indian Diaspora).

One good thing PM Modi has done, however, was sign various treaties with President Putin in December last year to ensure that Russia remains India’s primary defence partner. I guess then that another first at this year’s Republic Day parade was Obama becoming the first US President in history to applaud Russian weapons and aircraft.

But today, overall, we in India (among the ‘educated’ classes) are left with basically two kinds of people:

1. Hyper-jingoistic, Muslim- and Christian-hating, and Israel-supporting, right-wing Orthodox Hindus that are mainly from business/corporate backgrounds. Many of them are under the illusion that all advancements in science and technology, as well as art and culture, came from ancient India. They do like the US though, because it is seen as ‘so developed’, is ‘good for business’, and because the US ‘kills Muslims’.

  1. An Anglicized/Americanized trendy/pseudo-liberal crowd that supports Palestine but also supports the Tibetan movement and various separatist movements in India. Many of them are atheists (Sam Harris and Bill Maher-style atheists). They love propaganda films like Argo, 300 and American Sniper. While they may not be racists or religious bigots, they have very low self-esteem and self-worth. Instead, they are very self-loathing, and look outwards for approval, acknowledgement and redemption from Westerners. They loathe Hindu gurus but the Dalai Lama is a wise sage for them. They hate our current PM Modi for being a right-winger but are charmed, even enchanted by Obama for being the first Black President of a ‘First World Democracy’, having no clue about Obama being a bigger genocidal criminal than both Bushes combined. Speaking of Bush, these liberal Indians do hate him, but they consider the Democrat party of USA to be ‘liberal’ because the Democrats are pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ rights and recognize man-made climate change.

Because most of these ‘trendy’ liberal Indians love CNN, MSNBC, BBC and the New York Times, they are obviously duped into hating President Putin. You see, we are so wannabe Westerners, so we trust the Western media more than our own media. Thanks to these ‘trendy’ liberals, India is still seen as the land of slums, and now – the West’s new label – the ‘Land of Rapists’.

People like me are increasingly becoming a tiny minority here. It’s much better to be Russian or Chinese. But still, I am slightly optimistic about my fellow Indians. I am sure many of us would have smelled the coffee before NATO turns fully hostile against us (which they inevitability will).

Power to the BRICS alliance.

Presidential ‘Hopeful’, H. Clinton Gold Digging on 100,000 Haitian Deaths*

Presidential ‘Hopeful, H. Clinton Gold Digging on 100,000 Haitian Deaths*

By Andrew Topf

The presidential ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton have become ensnared in an obscure gold-mining project in Haiti, as the Democratic favourite for the presidency begins her second run for the White House.

In a story that suggests cronyism, questionable ethics and a blurring of the lines between charity and profiteering, The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that Clinton’s brother, Tony Rodham, sat on the board of VCS Mining when the unlisted, Delaware-based junior was granted a permit to mine gold in Haiti following a massive earthquake on the impoverished island nation in 2010. The permit was the first to be granted in over 50 years, VCS Mining wrote in the press release announcing the awarding of the 5-year exploitation permit.

While Rodham’s involvement in the gold project, called Morne Bossa, would normally be of little cause for concern, what has raised eyebrows is the timing of the permit, granted two years after the earthquake that killed over 100,000 people, and the fact that Rodham “was a board member of a North Carolina mining company that enjoyed prime access to Haitian gold deposits in the wake of post-earthquake relief work organized in part by former president Bill Clinton through the Clinton Foundation,” according to the Daily Mail. Another VCS board member was Jean-Max Bellerive, noted the Mail, who co-chaired the charitable Interim Haiti Recovery Commission with former US president Bill Clinton.

However the company vigorously defends against the allegation, saying in a press release that Rodham and Bellerive did not become become members of the board of directors until Oct. 27, 2013, almost a year after the final development permit for Morne Bossa was issued.

“We never expected or asked Mr. Rodham for any special treatment and did not receive any. There was no quid pro quo concerning the Clinton Foundation suggested or offered and VCS has not received any financial assistance from any Clinton entity nor has the Company solicited any Clinton entity,” the company states.

Still the allegations concerning her brother come at a bad time for Hillary Clinton, who is increasingly in the media spotlight as the frontrunner to become the Democratic presidential nominee. The former secretary of state and first lady came under fire this week when it was discovered she used a private email address, rather than a public, traceable one, while at the State Department. Further questions were raised upon revelations that Scott Gration, the US ambassador to Kenya while Clinton was Secretary of State, was kicked from his post for a similar move to keep emails from public view. The Clinton Foundation has also been criticized recently for accepting donations from countries that Clinton dealt with while Secretary, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran, which could create conflicts of interest with such countries should Clinton become president.

After the earthquake in Haiti, the Clinton Foundation raised around $36 million for disaster relief, while the Obama Administration kicked in $3.6 billion.

Geologist Sergio Pastor replied:

I worked for VCS back in 2010. Just after the earthquake in Haiti, I was hired to work exploraing for a low grade gold deposit in Haiti on the property mentioned in your article,“MORNE- BOSSA”, in addition to several other gold properties there.

It now comes to mind why some of the more educated people in Haiti used to tell me, “20% plus Clinton”. The Clintons are held to a double standard led by an agenda-driven media. Questionable ethics are blurring the lines between charity
and profiteering,

I personally saw an impoverished nation and daily transport planes coming from the USA and other parts of the world, but their motives were strictly related to “what’s good for the Clintons”. The general view there was they are ugly, greedy and dirty.

Initially, I thought the musician president of Haiti, Michel Martelly, was going to be good for Haiti. I must say the village people that I got to know were very nice people and I am sorry for what is happening to their country which has as good a natural resources environment as their neighbor, the Dominican Republic.

Hospital Takes Baby because Family Asked for a Second Opinion*

By Terri LaPoint

When Lakisha Tanna’s infant grandson was transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, she thought that he was in the best place he could be to receive the care that he needed for his medical condition. She never dreamed that this choice would eventually result in her adorable grandchild being what she terms “medically kidnapped” more than a year later. On March 12, the family faces a hearing to determine whether Malik, now 2 1/2, will be able to return home to his grandparents who love him, or forever become a ward of the state of Illinois.

Readers may recall that Lurie Children’s Hospital is the same hospital that seized custody of teenager Isaiah Rider, a Missouri resident who was being treated at Lurie for his rare medical condition. Like Isaiah’s mom Michelle, Lakisha trusted this hospital with her child’s life, believing that Lurie was “supposed to be a place that has children’s best interest at heart.”

The “Cardinal Sin” Of Questioning Doctors

Malik Mitchel was born on July 5, 2012, with a medical condition that resulted in his small intestine being surgically removed, known as short gut syndrome. At 6 days of age, his family transferred him to Lurie, where he would spend the next 8 months. Because of factors related to his serious medical needs, the family made the decision to transfer guardianship to his grandparents.

Shortly after this transfer, a social worker from Lurie approached Lakisha with a proposal to make Malik a ward of the state, “putting inferences on the benefits of a financial gain” for his grandmother, a proposal which she promptly declined.

According to federal guidelines, children who are wards of the state may be enrolled in medical research studies without their families’ knowledge or consent. This disturbing fact came into the light during the Justina Pelletier case, where Boston Children’s Hospital and Connecticut CPS seized the teenager over a disagreement about a diagnosis.

“Justina’s Law” Seeks to End Experimental Medical Research on Children Seized by Child Protection Services

At the time, Lakisha was unaware of the ramifications of his becoming a ward of the state; she and her husband simply wanted to be there for her grandson, and provide him with the love and care that family can provide better than any stranger or institution. That is what families are for and have been since the beginning of human history.

Malik was discharged from Lurie on March 18, 2013, and was sent home with an in-home nurse. Another nurse came by weekly to draw labs. During this time, Lakisha switched paediatricians to one who was closer to her home. He was receiving all of his nutrition via IV (TPN). He battled bouts of diarrhoea, and his weight frequently fluctuated.

Lurie Calls Child Abuse/Neglect Hotline over Appointment Missed Because of Car Trouble

In July, Lakisha missed a scheduled appointment with a GI doctor she says because her car broke down. A social worker from the hospital, Joanne Singleton, phoned DCFS (child protective services), reporting her to the abuse and neglect hotline. Apparently there were some abnormal lab results that they had planned to address during the appointment.

Malik was later admitted to the hospital, where he was taken off the TPN due to increased risks with long-term use. A G-tube feeding tube was inserted. Later, Lakisha learned that the alleged abnormal labs were unfounded.

Despite the change in his feeding plan, he still suffered from diarrhoea off and on. Lakisha reports that the formula they place him on was difficult for him to tolerate. However, when she tried to make suggestions about his nutritional issues and care, it seemed to her that the staff took offense rather than trying to work with them.

Warning about Lurie

Lakisha reports that a DCFS investigator told her at this time “to be careful,” because “they receive a lot of calls from Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital on minority families.” Lakisha holds a Master’s degree in social work, and is a hospital social worker herself, but she had no idea what she was about to face in her battle to provide the best possible care for her little boy.

Mistaken Report Leads to Hospitalization

After the last hospital discharge the number of in-home nursing hours were reduced from 98 hours per week to 56, and a different agency provided the services. On October 24, 2013, Lakisha received a call to bring Malik in to Lurie Hospital immediately, due to weight loss reported by the nursing agency. Though it was late in the day, she took him in. He was weighed and labs were drawn. He had a weight loss of almost a pound and a half. However, this was a far cry from the report which prompted the urgent call. The coordinator at the in-home nursing agency had allegedly reported a weight loss of 6 to 7 pounds!

Despite the obvious mistake, they insisted on admitting Malik to the hospital. Lakisha reports that this was quite confusing to her. She asked for an admitting diagnosis, but no one could ever tell her why he was being admitted. The next day, further tests were ordered “which didn’t make any sense,” but she agreed to them. Everything came back within normal limits. Still, Malik remained hospitalized.

Request for Second Opinion Denied; Custody Seized

By this point in Malik’s short life, he had already been subjected to 4 surgeries, but he still had repeated issues with his weight fluctuating. Lakisha expressed her concerns about the care he was receiving and asked to get a second opinion. She began talking about transferring his care to another hospital. The right to seek a second opinion and better treatment options are concepts which have long been assumed by the American public to be both the right and the responsibility of parents. However, much like Michelle Rider and the Pelletiers, Lakisha learned that some hospitals do not see it the same way.

When Lakisha got to the hospital to visit her grandson on December 5, she was shocked to find that Lurie had restricted her from visitation. She says that a social worker walked her to Malik’s room to kiss him good-bye, but she was not permitted to stay to visit. The next day, DCFS seized custody of Malik, citing medical neglect.

It was not until Christmas Eve that she was finally able to visit him again, under supervision. On December 26, Lakisha received a voicemail that DCFS had made the decision to “indicate” her, meaning that they would put her on an abuse and neglect registry. She reports that she was not able to make any kind of defense or participate in the telephone conference call where the decision was made.

Malik Ready to Be Discharged, then Has Surgery

Though a DCFS worker allegedly stated to the court on December 6 that Malik was medically ready for discharge from the hospital, Lurie scheduled him for surgery on January 15, 2014. Lakisha was not told why he needed the surgery, nor did she give her consent. She was not even permitted to be present for her grandson’s surgery. It was only later that Lakisha learned that the procedure was for a bowel blockage. Even so, Malik continued to experience problems with weight fluctuations after going into state custody.

Later, the judge in the case allegedly asked why the surgery was done, but the GAL (Guardian ad Litem) was unable to explain it. Lakisha reports that she testified that she had learned that it was for a bowel blockage. He allegedly said that it sounded like it had a biological cause, unrelated to anything that the grandmother had done.

Because Malik is a child with serious medical needs, the Tannas suspect that some of the “uninformed experimentation procedures” that Malik has been subjected to are part of the reason that he was taken from them in the first place. A number of activists studying the problem of medical kidnapping have repeatedly asserted that children like Malik, with medically complex issues, are cash cows to the system and to the hospitals involved.

Dealing with the System

Malik’s time is alternated between Lurie Children’s Hospital, Almost Home Kids – a transitional facility owned by Lurie, and a foster home with strangers.

At one point Malik’s Guardian ad Litem filed a motion which would have isolated the baby from any contact with any family members or friends besides his grandparents, but the request was denied.

However, Lakisha has been prohibited from attending Malik’s doctors appointments, despite a court order to the contrary. Joanne Singleton, a Lurie social worker has allegedly placed a restriction forbidding Malik’s grandmother to come to Lurie or Almost Home Kids unless she is accompanied by a DCFS social worker. The restriction remains even though a copy of the court order has been provided to both facilities.

Even though Lakisha has limited visitation rights to see her baby, even those visits have been sporadic, sometimes cancelled due to lack of a worker to supervise, sickness of the worker, sickness of the baby, or unavailability of the foster family. This is very difficult emotionally for the family.

Lurie has allegedly not been happy with the foster parents either. When the foster mother questioned the formula that Lurie had prescribed, she took Malik to a GI specialist at another hospital for a second opinion. She actually did what Lakisha has merely talked about doing. Someone at Lurie allegedly became very angry and called the child abuse hotline on the foster mother. She is now allegedly under investigation.

Court Ruling in October

According to Lakisha, a DCFS worker filed a parenting report stating that Malik would be better off with a stay-at-home mom than Lakisha, because she works. This, despite the fact that Malik has in-home nursing care when he is with the Tannas. She states that the report also says,

“me wanting a second opinion was just a sign that I was in denial of Malik’s condition.” (Note: with Michelle Rider, her request for a second opinion for Isaiah was seen as a sign that she was guilty of Munchausen by Proxy.)

The adjudication hearings have ended and the judge ruled against Lakisha on October 15, 2014, allegedly stating that he would have to go with the opinion of the expert witness. There was no evidence of abuse presented. According to Lakisha, this expert witness was a Child Abuse Specialist from Lurie, Dr. Norell Rosado – a doctor that she had never even seen. He allegedly stated that Malik wasn’t behaving like a normal child; however, the timing that he saw Malik was when he was very sick with diarrhoea. The judge allegedly cited neglect because Lakisha failed to take Malik for a follow-up visit with the paediatrician. She states that she was not permitted to give her simple explanation in court: that Malik had been readmitted to Lurie for a 3 week hospital stay at the time the follow-up was supposed to occur.

Final Hearing Scheduled for March 12

There is one final chance for Lakisha to get her grandson back, or lose him forever. A dispositional hearing is scheduled for Thursday, March 12, at 1:30 pm at the Juvenile Detention Center, 1100 S. Hamilton, Chicago. Supporters are invited to come and show support for the family.

A previous dispositional hearing was continued because no plan for going forward could be agreed upon. Malik’s Guardian ad Litem and the State Attorney are “fighting to make Malik a Ward of the State of Illinois,” while Lakisha’s attorney and DCFS support Malik being returned to his home with his grandparents.

Regarding the hearing, Lakisha states:

“This is final for me and as a grandmother I was told that I have no legal rights to Malik. Therefore if the Judge doesn’t rule in my favour, I would lose him to the system forever. So I don’t know what to do besides continue to fight back and pray.”

Lakisha was recently a guest on “The Captain,” a blogtalk radio show. Her heartbreaking story may be heard here.

A Facebook page has been set up to support the family – For the love of Malik.

In a strange twist of connection, Michelle Rider’s final hearing for her son Isaiah Rider, also in Chicago, also taken by DCFS and Lurie Children’s Hospital, is the day before Lakisha and Malik’s hearing. Lakisha’s powerful words speak not only for her family, but also for the Riders, and for every other family whose child has been taken away from them for disagreeing with doctors and seeking a second opinion:

“Making a child a ward of the state that comes from a good, loving home that cares for him, to be lost in a system and separated from his family is not in the BEST INTEREST of the child. In the midst of trying to find a solution for my child’s health problems, this institution [Lurie Children’s Hospital] has caused me and my family nothing but great pain, grief, and stress.”
