One Mother Shows How 2012 Top Maths Students Fail in Common Core Maths*

By Tom Hinchey

Karen Lamoreaux addressed the Arkansas Board of Education in December 2013 to discuss the negative effects of Common Core on the local students. Mrs. Lamoreaux said that she represented more than 1,100 parents, educators, and taxpayers of Arkansas

“who have very serious reservations about the Common Core initiative.”

The mother of three children accused the board of falling for the same empty sales pitch that Common Core would be a “set of rigorous, college-ready internationally bench-marked standards that prepare our kids to compete in a global economy.”

Mrs. Lamoreaux instructed the members of the school board to participate in a Common Core math problem by getting their pencils out.

Are you smarter than a Common Core fourth grader? Let’s find out. The problem is: Mr. Yamato’s class has 18 students. If the class counts around by a number and ends with 90, what number did they count by?

After restating the math problem again, Mrs. Lamoreaux asked if anybody on the board knew the answer. One board member answered “five” by dividing 18 into 90. Mrs. Lamoreaux confirmed:

You know why? Because that’s what makes sense, right? That’s the way we were taught to do it in the fourth grade level.

Then she held up a Common Core math lesson that teaches students to solve this problem in a different way.

This, however, is what the Common Core Standards expect our fourth graders to do. If they solve it in those two steps they get it marked wrong. They are expected to draw 18 circles with 90 hashmarks solving this problem in exactly 108 steps. Board members, this is not rigorous. This is not college ready. This is not preparing our children to compete in a global economy.

Mrs. Lamoreaux went on to say that students who were in the upper eightieth percentile or greater in the previous year are now getting C’s, D’s, and F’s on their report cards. With passion in her voice, Mrs. Lamoreaux told the board that she and other parents will fight to change this curriculum that is “dumbing down our kids.”

I encourage you to listen to us when we send you our emails despite the comments that were made by our chairperson here today. Our concerns are not based on hysteria or propaganda. They are based on fact and we are prepared to present those facts. Can you see the trembling in my voice?

She concluded her time:

This is not working. And it’s not what they told you it would be. We will save the privacy concerns and the testing concerns for our legislature. But when it comes to standards, that’s your ball court. And we need you to help us with this because this program is dumbing our children down. Thank you.

In February, Governor Asa Hutchinson announced his plan to create a 16-person Common Core review committee that will take another look at the state standards. Many parents like Karen Lamoreaux are pleased with that decision.

Pepsi by Law Can Keep Adding Carcinogens to Your Soda*

Pepsi One and Diet Pepsi drinkers lost a battle against the GMO supporting company, Pepsi Co, recently when a federal judge dismissed a class action lawsuit over the carcinogenic additive, 4-methylimidazole (4-MeI) found within the beverages.

The substance 4-MeI is a by-product of caramel coloring, and it has been proven to cause cancer in multiple scientific studies. The Coca-Cola Company previously eliminated the chemical from its drinks, while Pepsi Co did not.

Under California’s Prop 65, 4-MeI is included on a state list of substances that can cause cancer. An arm of the World Health Organization has also classified 4-MeI as a possible carcinogen. Consumer Reports also did a study on the chemical and found it was well above ‘healthy’ levels in many Pepsi drinks.

Paul Riva and Danielle Ardagna were part of a larger class action suit against Pepsico claiming that their drinks were unhealthy, but interim legal counsel decided to ignore personal injury or medical monitoring claims when the larger case was carried further into court with just the two plaintiffs.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen dismissed the Riva case after finding no basis for the claim of entitlement to medical monitoring, even though multiple experts completely disagree. He stated in his ruling:

“There is no plausible inference that 4-MeI causes bronchioloalveolar cancer in humans. The threshold levels of exposure that lead to enhanced risk of disease have not been identified. And many other common foods contain similar or higher levels of 4-MeI than the Pepsi products at issue.”

Riva and Ardagna asserted claims against Pepsico for negligence, strict liability based on defective design and liability based on failure to warn, seeking medical monitoring as a remedy for all three claims.

Despite Judge Chen’s ignorance, a single can of Pepsi One can contain as much as 43.5 micrograms of 4-MeI. Not something you want to regularly ingest. Even if Pepsi Co won this particular class action lawsuit, we can still hold them accountable as consumers.

You know what to do – time to boycott all Pepsi products – from their carcinogenic drinks to their GMO containing products sold under these brand names – Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Quaker.

The Butcher of Bahrain is British*

The Government is refusing to release 38-year-old papers shedding light on Britain’s relationship with the authoritarian regime in Bahrain, amid suggestions that it is protecting a deal on a new Royal Navy base in the Gulf country.

Campaigners asked the Information Rights Tribunal to intervene and force the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) to release the full text of a 1977 document detailing the conversation between British officials and Ian Henderson, a British military officer who ran the police force in the Sunni-ruled state for 30 years.

Henderson, who died two years ago, was dubbed the “Butcher of Bahrain” after allegations that he was complicit in the ransacking of villages, the sadistic sexual abuse of Shia prisoners and the use of power drills to maim them.

The document should be available under the 30-year-rule controlling the release of government papers, but Marc Jones, an academic and a member of the Bahrain Watch human rights group, says the FCO has refused to release it despite repeated requests.

Instead, only a heavily redacted version has been released. Mr Jones believes the full document is highly critical of the Khalifa family, which rules the state, and is being held back to save them “embarrassment” and avoid jeopardising a deal for a new Royal Navy base.

Ian Henderson, the Butcher of Bahrain

He said:

“My appeal is reflecting public concern that the British Government has insulated the Government of Bahrain from criticism of serious human rights abuses including torture, and may have concealed evidence of serious wrong-doing. In the unredacted information, there are indications that the withheld information could contain information important in understanding why the British-led Bahrain police force had a tendency towards deviance and torture.”

In heavily redacted written evidence submitted to the tribunal, Edward Oakden, a senior FCO diplomat and former ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, said the document should not to be released, citing the base as vital for improving “operational effectiveness in a volatile region” and adding that Bahrain is a “generous host” to the Navy and the RAF.

The tribunal is expected to reach a verdict on the appeal within four months. Meanwhile, Amnesty International has found that the Bahraini regime continues to “curtail freedoms of expression, association and assembly” and that its security forces have used “excessive force to disperse protests” killing at least two people in the past year.

The redacted document is believed to detail Henderson’s verdict on Bahraini security officials, potentially including members of the Khalifa family. His career was closely linked with the ruling family, including the Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman, who has run the country since 1970.

Mr Jones said:

“By attempting to shield information that highlights the dependence of the Khalifa on the British, the public are being deprived of important information of historic British complicity in human rights violations.

Henderson was installed as head of security in Bahrain in 1966, when the country was still a British protectorate. As a colonial officer he had helped suppress the Mau Mau insurgency in Kenya, and when Bahrain declared independence in 1971, Bin Salman kept him as head of the country’s intelligence service.

A spokesperson for the Foreign office said it

“would not be appropriate to comment”

until the tribunal had made its judgment. The spokesperson added:

“The UK is working closely with the Government of Bahrain to provide reform assistance focused on strengthening human rights and the rule of law.”
