Ancient Indian Ways Used to Change Dust Bowls into Lush Villages*

Ancient Indian Ways Used to Change Dust Bowls into Lush Villages*

A $150,000 prize has been awarded to the “Water Gandhi of India” for his wildly successful work that turns abandoned, impoverished “dust bowls” into lush villages bustling with life again using an ancient method of rainwater harvesting.

For teaching thousands of villagers in India’s most arid region how to build earthen dams to catch the monsoon rains and revitalize their land, Rajendra Singh was honored Friday with the 2015 Stockholm Water Prize.

30 years ago, Singh went to the poverty-stricken state of Rajasthan with the aim of setting up health clinics. He was told by villagers, however, that their greatest need was not health care, but water. Their wells had dried up. Soon after, crops wilted, rivers and forests disappeared, and many able-bodied villagers left in search for work in the cities. Women, children and the elderly were left behind without hope, as their villages became barren dust bowls.

So, instead of clinics, Singh showed them how to build johads, traditional earthen dams.

In the two decades since he arrived in Rajasthan, 8,600 johads have been built to collect water for 1,000 villages across the state. Nature then took over, replenishing the ground water. Rivers began flowing again and the forest cover increased, bringing back animals, like the antelope and, even, the majestic peacock, once on the verge of extinction in these parts. Women, once burdened with carrying water from miles away, now had time for other things.

“If he hadn’t come into our lives, we wouldn’t be able to do anything,” one resident told CNN in the video below. “He’s like a God here.”

The traditional Indian methods of collecting and storing rainwater date back thousands of years, but fell out of use during British colonial rule.

Thanks to the “Water man of India” and colleagues at his NGO, Tarun Bharat Sangh, some of the poorest communities of India are now prosperous— empowered once again by agricultural livelihoods.

Climate change is changing weather patterns around the world, leading to more frequent and intense droughts and floods. Learning how to harvest rainwater, cutting the peaks of water to fill the troughs, will be a key skill in most parts of the world.

“Due to the harvesting of rain and recharging our groundwater, there is no scope for drought or floods in our area,” says Rajendra Singh, who called his recent Water Prize award encouraging, energizing and inspiring.

“This work of ours is a way to solve both floods and droughts globally. Therefore we believe the impact of this work is on the local level, national level, the international level and above all at the village level.

Fears of a British Policed State Rising Midst the Elite Paedophile Scourge*

Brian Gerrish of UK Column says that there’s a rush of people contacting him advising there’s something very nasty going on behind the scenes.  A new quasi-Marxist fascist political system is being prepared.  Christopher Storey wrote in his book (missed the title) that this was the plan, giving great details.

People are to be taken off the land.  People’s property is being stolen from under their feet.  The destabilisation phase is beginning.  Trouble in the economy.  Trouble in politics.  If you show resistance, you’ll end up in a psychiatric unit.  More shocking details given in the video.  Britain is descending into a vicious Police State.

The aim is to bring violence onto the streets to collapse democracy.  Child abuse is being used to bring people onto the streets, to foster division between communities.  Rotherham.  No one’s been convicted. 1400 children abused by gangs in Rotherham, gangs branded as Asian in the media.  Child abuse by white people is being ignored by the media.  Child abuse is being used to create the violence on the streets, which will justify the ending of democracy.

50% of child abusers are women.  This is also being ignored.

David Cameron is using Military Police and Naval Personnel to protect him.

Westminster is putting child abuse revealers under a regime of terror.

Stay peaceful.  Don’t allow the deviants in Westminster to push us into violence.  That’s exactly what they want.

Google to Pay $8.5mn for Illegally Sharing Users Data*

Google to Pay $8.5mn for Illegally Sharing Users Data*

By Elizabeth Warmerdam

Google will pay $8.5mn, most of it to non-profit organizations, to settle a class action that claimed that it illegally divulged users’ search information to third parties, a federal judge ruled.
U.S. District Judge Edward Davila granted final approval to the settlement on March 31, finding that distributing the money to non-profits instead of class members was appropriate.

Davila also found that the settlement was reasonable even though Google will not have to stop disclosing search queries.
The consolidated class action accused Google of routinely passing on private information through “referrer headers,” which provided the website the user was visiting with the URL of the referring page. The URL included the search terms typed in by the user.
Personal information passed on through these referrer headers could include users’ names, IP addresses, their confidential medical information, their race, or information about their religious beliefs and sexual orientation, according to the complaint.
Such transmissions to third parties could involve millions of search queries a day.

It was anticipated that the class would be consist of about 129 million people.

Under the settlement, Google will pay $8.5mn for distributions to cy pres recipients, attorney fees and costs, incentive awards to the named plaintiffs, and administration costs.
The non-profit cy pres recipients are Carnegie Mellon University, the World Privacy Forum, Chicago-Kent College of Law Center for Information, Society and Policy, the Stanford Center for Internet Society, the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, and the AARP Foundation.
Objectors to the settlement argued that the class should be decertified because class members will not receive any form of direct monetary compensation. The objectors claimed that if it is too costly to distribute settlement funds to class members, then a class action is not the best method of resolution.
However, “the alternatives to a class action are not preferable since they involve either thousands of individual cases or a complete abandonment of millions of claims,” Davila ruled.

“Moreover, a class-wide resolution is not rendered inferior simply because the settlement agreement calls for an indirect rather than a direct benefit to the class.”
Davila found that a cy pres remedy is the “next best” result in this case.
“First, the settlement fund, while sizeable, is ‘non-distributable.’ Since the amount of potential class members exceeds one hundred million individuals, requiring proofs of claim from this many people would undeniably impose a significant burden to distribute, review and then verify. Similarly, the cost of sending out very small payments to millions of class members would exceed the total monetary benefit obtained by the class,” Davila wrote.

The cy pres distribution also accounts for the nature of the lawsuits, meets the objectives of the class action and furthers the interests of class members, the judge said.

The organizations receiving the money have a record of promoting privacy protection on the Internet and are capable of using the money to educate the class about online privacy risks.

Google also will have to post disclosures on its website concerning user search queries, including information about whether users’ search queries are transmitted to third parties. The disclosures must appear on Google’s FAQs page, Key Terms page, and Privacy FAQ for Google Web History page. But Google will not be required to make changes to its homepage, google.com, or to practices of functionality of Google Search, Google AdWords, Google Analytics or Google Web History.

Davila noted that this relief is not the best result, since the class sought to stop Google from disclosing search queries altogether.

“At the same time, a class action settlement does not need to embody the best possible result to be approved. The court’s role is not to advocate for any particular relief, but instead to determine whether the settlement terms fall within a reasonable range of possible settlements,” Davila wrote.

He found the compromise reasonable because the plaintiffs might not have obtained the result they wanted if the case were to proceed, and Google did agree to provide the privacy disclosures, Davila said.

He awarded class counsel to $2.125mn in fees, 25% of the settlement fund.

Counsel took the case on a contingent basis and spent considerable time and money with no guarantee of payment. The settlement was not reached easily and counsel had to defend the claims against three motions to dismiss.
Furthermore, the requested award is not disproportionate to the class benefit and is comparable to awards approved in similar Internet privacy class actions, Davila said.

“International Public Health Coalition Says Planned Global WiFi from Space Will Destroy Ozone Layer, Worsen Climate Change, and Threaten Human Life and Health”

By Professor James F. Tracy

Google, Facebook, and three other companies (here, here, here, here, and here) are gearing up to provide high-speed global Wi-Fi coverage from space within the next three to four years. This would be an ecological and public health nightmare, according to a recently-formed international coalition: the Global Union against Radiation Deployment from Space (GUARDS).

According to GUARDS, the extensive satellite networks required will endanger the ozone layer and significantly contribute to climate change. Rocket exhaust contains ozone-destroying chlorine, water vapour (a greenhouse gas), and aluminum oxide particles, which seed stratospheric clouds. Complete ozone destruction is observed in the exhaust plumes of rockets.

The New York Times (May 14, 1991, p. 4) quoted Aleksandr Dunayev of the Russian Space Agency saying

“About 300 launches of the space shuttle each year would be a catastrophe and the ozone layer would be completely destroyed.”

At that time, the world averaged only 12 rocket launches per year. Maintaining a fleet of (ultimately) 4,000 satellites, each with an expected lifespan of five years, will likely involve enough yearly rocket launches to be an environmental catastrophe.

GUARDS’ second area of concern is Wi-Fi itself. Although widely perceived as an unqualified good, Wi-Fi operates using extremely rapid pulses of microwave radiation—the same radiation used in microwave ovens. And a parade of studies continue to be published and ignored implicating wireless technology in the die-off of forests, the demise of frogs, bats, and honey bees, the threatened extinction of the house sparrow, and damage to the DNA of the human species. It is vital to the continuation of life that large parts of the earth be spared from the incessant radiation that accompanies wireless technologies.

The human body”, says Dr Gerard J. Hyland, of the University of Warwick, UK,

“is an electrochemical instrument of exquisite sensitivity”, noting that, like a radio, it can be interfered with by incoming radiation. If a signal can operate a mechanical device, it can disturb every cell in the human body.

On February 7, 2014, the U.S. Department of Interior stated that “the electromagnetic radiation standards used by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continue to be based on thermal heating, a criterion now nearly 30 years out of date and inapplicable today” in reference to guidelines governing Wi-Fi radiation frequencies.

In 2011 the World Health Organization classified radiation emitted by cell phones, and other wireless commercial infrastructure such as Wi-Fi and smart meters as a Class 2B possible human carcinogen, along with lead, engine exhaust, and DDT. Yet, the global Wi-Fi projects would make this exposure ubiquitous and inescapable.

A recent letter sent by 88 organizations, representing over a million people, to the European Economic and Social Committee outlines how governments are betraying the public trust by ignoring the hazards of radio frequency/microwave (RF/MW) radiation.

Studies show wireless radiation can adversely affect foetal brain development, in addition to causing double-stranded DNA breaks and causing a wide spectrum of illnesses. GUARDS believe that continuing and expanding involuntary exposure of the public to this known toxin violates the Nuremberg Code of Human Rights for non-consensual experimentation.

GUARDS is an international coalition of diverse groups that have joined together in order to stop the implementation of global Wi-Fi from space, which threatens all life on earth.
