West Bank Charity Continues Ancient Duty to Feed the Hungry*

West Bank Charity Continues Ancient Duty to Feed the Hungry*

Starting 10 a.m. on June 21, thousands of women, men, children and elderly line up in front of the Abraham almshouse building in the old town of Hebron, each carrying an empty container and passing it through a small window to the almshouse kitchen. There it will be filled with a meal of meat, soup, rice and bread.

It is Sunday, and today’s meal consists of meat and yoghurt. Today, the almshouse workers will cook more than 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of lamb and distribute it with bread and rice. It is a popular meal.

In the almshouse, food is cooked and distributed to the needy, the poor and whoever comes asking for food, including passers-by and visitors to the city of Hebron. This almshouse is one of the oldest in Palestine and makes its offerings all year round, shielding the city against hunger for hundreds of years now. During Ramadhan, the almshouse has even more work to do.

The waqf director in Hebron, Ismail Abu Halawa, said that the establishment dates back to the pre-Mamluk era and was known as “Prophet Abraham’s Bread.” During the 1250-1516 Mamluk period, the almshouse’s work flourished and the current building was built. The generosity of the Mamluk rulers helped make the almshouse famous and its name has become associated with these rulers.

Abu Halawa told Al-Monitor that the word “tekiyye” (Turkish for “almshouse”) means giving without receiving anything in return, which is the essence of the almshouse’s work, but the word literally means the “house of the needy.” Both meanings accurately describe its work.

The almshouse day starts at dawn, as workers begin preparing food in large pots, each of which can contain dozens of kilograms of meat or chicken cooked in broth, according to director Jamal Salhab.

Salhab added,

“Although the almshouse does not suspend its work throughout the year, work in Ramadhan has its peculiarities. We start working at dawn to finish preparing the food before 10 a.m. and finish distributing it before the midday prayer in order for all of the beneficiaries to return to their homes in time for iftar.”

For this reason, in addition to the eight workers who serve there normally, eight additional staff members join during Ramadhan. These are allocated by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs in Gaza — under whose purview the almshouse falls — along with 10 members of the city police to organize the food distribution.

Salhab said,

“Between 2,000 and 3,000 people gather in the almshouse square during the month of Ramadhan, thus requiring additional staff to assist in the fast distribution of food.”

Overcrowding is an issue in the limited space as the number of patrons grows by the year, stirring chaos one Ramadhan after the other, Salhab told Al-Monitor. The frenzy, though, dissipates in less than two hours, the time required to distribute food. Work then goes back to normal.

In the square, long lines form as men stand separately from women and children. In one stands Umm Jamal al-Kurdi, who lost her husband and provides for five children. For Kurdi, the almshouse is a blessing to her and her children.

Kurdi told Al-Monitor,

“I used to come to the almshouse once a week, but given the skyrocketing prices of meat and poultry, I am now fully dependent on the almshouse when it comes to the Ramadhan iftar.”

Kurdi, 45, along with her children, live on the allocations of the Ministry of Social Affairs, which do not exceed 1,000 shekels per month (about $250) for an entire family and barely suffice. She said that with the offerings of the almshouse, she does not need to spend any of this money on food, so she is able to allocate it entirely to her family’s other needs.

Abu Halawa said that the almshouse

“works year-round and only stops preparing meals on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, when it only offers ‘Abraham soup,’ a meal that consists of cooked cracked wheat without any additives, known in the city as ‘Dashisha with bread.’”

According to figures from the Awqaf, during the first four days of the month of Ramadhan, nearly 10,000 families benefited from the almshouse, at an average of 2,500 families a day. The number increases on some days and decreases on others, depending on the quantity and quality of the cooked food.

Abu Halawa said that during Ramadhan, the almshouse depends entirely on the support and donations of traders and philanthropists of the city of Hebron itself. He added,

“Every year, a philanthropist covers the cooking costs, and each day of Ramadhan is dedicated to one of these philanthropists who cover the almshouse cooking costs of the meal to be served that day.”

The almshouse’s management is working to expand its activities to bringing food to needy families and the elderly at home, but its highest priority for the time being is expanding the almshouse itself so that it can accommodate more visitors. Salhab told Al-Monitor,

“We currently have all the architectural plans and money has already been earmarked, but we are waiting for the approval of the Israeli side, which prohibits construction work close to an Israeli military position.”

13 Year Old World Karate Champion Forced to Quit After Gardasil Vaccine*

13 Year Old World Karate Champion Forced to Quit After Gardasil Vaccine*

By Simona

My daughter Chiara is 13 years old. She was an athlete with a history of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis with elevated levels of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies. We discovered it much before receiving HPV vaccine.

I can tell you that she was a good athlete. Hashimoto’s did not stop her from participating in the World Championship Karate in Caorle twice. In 2010, she won the brown belt. Chiara’s other hobbies included painting, singing and practicing sports. That was before Gardasil.

Chiara’s story after Gardasil is as follows:

She received the first injection of the HPV vaccine Gardasil in March 2013.  It was about ten days before her menstrual cycle. Afterward, she was sick for three days showing nausea, headache, stomach-ache and faint.

In April 2013 she was again sick for five days but the doctor said that could be just a strong menstrual syndrome.

In May 2013 she received the second shot and she was sick again for seven days.

During June 2013 she stayed sick for ten days.

By July 2013 she had an osteocondrite (a joint condition whereby a variable amount of bone and its adjacent cartilage loses its blood supply) at her astragalus (ankle) so she had to stop practicing sports. We contacted the gynaecologist and she suggested to give her magnesium.

On September 2013 after the third shot, she started to have seriously strong stomach-aches, like an acute allergic reaction. She did endoscopic exams, but all negative. She was treated with proton-pump inhibitors and she followed a diet without milk and derivatives, but no success.

In December 2013 she started to experience vasovagal syncope with strong stomachaches, headaches and insomnia.

During January 2014 she was kept in hospital for ten days, she repeated the endoscopic exam, and they found some eosinophil cells (eosinophilic esophagitis is an allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus) and low levels of vitamin D.

During February 2014 she started to take vitamin D, B1, B6, B12, selenium. She started feeling better but, the heavy pain, insomnia and syncope episodes did not stop.

During the 2013-2014 school year, she missed more than 90 day of classroom for the above pains and symptoms.

In July 2014 the endocrinologist/gynecologist suspected endometriosis and decided to give her a contraceptive (Claire), but through NMR analysis everything appeared negative.

Although we brought Chiara to several medical doctors only one, a gynaecologist, suggested that everything could be related to Gardasil treatments. All the others to which we talked about this idea treated us like mad people.

I have read several articles, but I am very impressed with one by Lloyd W. Phillip (Gardasil Syndrome). I think I have finally realized what happened my daughter.

At the moment she is taking selenium, magnesium, vitamin D, B1, B6, B12, melatonin and live lactic cultures. Although all the celiac tests were negative we discovered that celiac diet and low level of histamine related food seems to have some positive results.

The gynaecologist changed her contraceptive with a stronger one to stop the menstrual cycle flow.

In the last month she is doing better, she had just one episode of syncope, less pain and the number of normal days have increased.

The syncope episodes seem to be related to her menstrual cycle, in particular the worse days are those overlapping with ovulation and menstruation days.

After two years she was finally able to go to school for two consecutive weeks. Before, she could not eat without vomiting, study or sleep. Meeting her friends for a day out was nearly impossible.

I wrote my daughter’s story to give you an idea about the injuries that Gardasil could cause. I hope our experience could help you decide to investigate before you decide to use an HPV vaccine.

Above all, I hope Chiara and all the other survivors of new medical conditions after HPV vaccinations find treatments to help them get their normal lives back.

Cuba Has Officially Eradicated HIV Transmission to Babies*

Cuba Has Officially Eradicated HIV Transmission to Babies*

The World Health Organizaiton says Cuba has just scored a huge victory in the global battle against HIV and syphilis.

Cuba became the first country in the world Tuesday to be recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.

“This is a major victory in our long fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and an important step towards having an AIDS-free generation” said Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General.

According to the WHO, Cuba’s mother-to-child transmission rate of HIV is now below 2 percent of births, while syphilis transmission is less than 0.5 percent. Just two babies were born with HIV in Cuba in 2013, while 5 were born with syphilis, according to figures verified by the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization.

Michel Sidibe, Executive Director of the United Nations program UNAIDS, described Cuba’s achievement as “a celebration for children and families everywhere.”

“It shows that ending the AIDS epidemic is possible and we expect Cuba to be the first of many countries coming forward to seek validation that they have ended their epidemics among children,” Sidibe said.

The WHO first announced they believed Cuba would be eligible for recognition in March, but until now has withheld confirmation while it conducted an in-depth review of the country’s health data.

Worldwide, close to 1.4 million women with HIV become pregnant every year. Without specialized treatment, there is a 15-45 percent chance a HIV positive mother will pass the disease to their baby, either before birth or during breast feeding. Comparably, around 1 million women with syphilis become pregnant, according to the WHO.

In a statement, the WHO said Cuba’s milestone in combating these two diseases was achieved through guaranteed comprehensive prenatal care for mothers, including testing for HIV and syphilis.

“These services are provided as part of an equitable, accessible and universal health system in which maternal and child health programs are integrated with programs for HIV and sexually transmitted infections,” the statement read.

The milestone shows that the fight against some of the world’s worst diseases is winnable, according to Pan American Health Organization director Carissa Etienne.

“Cuba’s success demonstrates that universal access and universal health coverage are feasible and indeed are the key to success, even against challenges as daunting as HIV,” Etienne said.

GM Wheat Trial in U.K. Proves a Failure*

GM Wheat Trial in U.K. Proves a Failure*

GeneWatch UK today responded to Rothamsted Research’s admission that its field trial of GM wheat failed to repel aphids by highlighting the shocking waste of taxpayers’ money used to promote GM.

“With GM crops it’s always jam tomorrow and never jam today” said Dr Helen Wallace, Director of GeneWatch UK,

“We have had more than 30 years’ of promises of useful traits but they have not been delivered, despite massive promotion of GM technology by governments and PR companies. There is a big opportunity cost because billions in R&D funding could have been spent in better ways. GM has consistently been shown to be a distraction away from developing real solutions to real problems”.

In reality, GM has delivered just two traits; is grown on only around 3 percent of global farmland; and used in only four crops; the products of which mostly go to animal feed and bio-fuels. The vast majority of GM crops, about 85 percent of land area grown, contain the Roundup Ready trait patented by Monsanto. They are now failing in the field due to the growth of superweeds resistant to the weedkiller RoundUp which is blanket sprayed on these GM plants. RoundUp Ready GM crops cause well-documented harm to wildlife, including a 90 percent crash in the Monarch butterfly population in the USA over the past 20 years and RoundUp was recently declared a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency . The next generation of GM crops are tolerant to more weedkillers, such as 2,4-D and dicamba, in an attempt to overcome the superweeds problem.

More than 19,000 field trials of other traits have been conducted in the USA, but new traits have not been delivered.

RoundUp Ready maize produced by Syngenta is the only GM crop in the pipeline for commercial growing in the EU that would be suitable for growing in Britain.

We must now recognise that GM has had its chance and failed to deliver” said Dr Wallace.

We must move on to an agricultural system that does work and produces safe food that consumers want and that doesn’t damage the environment; and our research systems need to now move away from their stubborn obsession with GM and instead provide what the public wants and the environment needs.”

GeneWatch UK has previously highlighted the high failure rate of experimental GM crops and the collaboration between government-funded scientists, ministers and industry on a PR strategy to try to rehabilitate GM crops in Britain and weaken regulations. The industry’s PR strategy is based on using public money to get academic scientists to promote promises of future GM crops, which provide magical solutions to complex problems, as a distraction from the actual problems experienced by farmers growing GM crops on the ground today.

Muslimah Graduates from Harvard Aged 20*

Muslimah Graduates from Harvard Aged 20*

A Nigerian American woman has made headlines around the world after graduating from Harvard with a neurobiology degree aged just 20. Saheela Ibraheem from New Jersey was accepted to Harvard and thirteen other universities at the tender age of 15.

After skipping the sixth and ninth grades, Ibraheem received a near-perfect score on the SAT and was also accepted to MIT, Princeton and Columbia before settling on Harvard after falling in love with the campus.

Ibraheem has long been in the spotlight for her academic achievements. At 16, she was named to a list of “The World’s 50 Smartest Teenagers,” which led her to be invited to the White House in early March, where she was introduced to the President and first lady at a reception to kick off Black History Month.

“She’s like the State Department and the National Institutes of Health all rolled into one,” Obama said during a short speech.

“Young people like this inspire our future.”

Ibraheem became interested in neurobiology in high school when she picked up a copy of “Gray’s Anatomy” at the school library.

Ibraheem’s parents are both numerically inclined. Her father is a quantitative analyst for a New York bank, and her mother is an accountant. She has three younger brothers, two of whom are in their first years at Yale University and Dartmouth College.

Being younger than her Harvard classmates didn’t prove too difficult. Ibraheem recalled that one first meeting with a classmate devolved into an argument about how old she really was. Other than that, she said that being too young to buy some cold medicines or to see R-rated movies were the most significant obstacles.

Ibraheem has been a member of the Harvard Islamic Society, the Science Club for Girls, which provides after-school mentoring, and, Dreamporte, which uses 3-D technology to teach geography and world culture to foster children.

When asked what advice she had for incoming students, Ibraheem said that they shouldn’t shy away from challenging classes, but that they also shouldn’t sacrifice sleep and free time just to study endlessly.

“There are so many new people. Meet as many as you can. Maybe try out extra curricula’s you didn’t [try] before,” Ibraheem said.

Ibraheem said her Harvard experience transformed her from a shy person to someone comfortable meeting people, talking with them, and listening to them.

“[It was] definitely enlightening, transformative, unique,” she said.

U.K. Gang Found Guilty of Raping Babies*

U.K. Gang Found Guilty of Raping Babies*

By Nadine Osman

A gang of white paedophiles who raped and abused babies and children under the age of five in attacks that were streamed over the internet are facing lengthy prison sentences after being found guilty.

The gang of seven white men aged between 30 and 51 habitually targeted children in Yorkshire, the South East, and the South West. They faced more than 30 charges, including the rape of a child, conspiracy to rape a child, sexual activity with a child and administering a substance with intent against three victims – a baby, a toddler and a pre-school age child.

The shocking details were reported in full for the first time after the last of the trials ended on April 22 at Bristol Crown Court. They preyed on the families of the children they targeted, in one case grooming a couple before their baby was born.

Members would often travel long distances to carry out the attacks together or watch the abuse over the internet if only one had access to a victim.

Online chat revealed that the gang would offer advice and guidance to others on drugging their victims. John Denham, 49, from Wiltshire, and Matthew Stansfield, 34, from Hampshire were found guilty earlier last month.

Robin Hollyson, 30, from Bedfordshire; Christopher Knight, 35, from Manchester; Adam Toms, 33, from Somerset; David Harsley, 51, from Humberside and Matthew Lisk, 32, from East Sussex – had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges they faced. They all face significant prison sentences and some could be jailed for life when they return to court on a date to be fixed. Investigators believe there are other victims.

Police described the men as “monsters in disguise”, working together to commit some of the most “vile and depraved’ child sex offences the authorities have ever seen. The NCA, which led the investigation, said the perverts met after discussing their sexual interests in young children on legitimate social media and adult sex sites. The gang was described as “incredibly skilled” at grooming victims’ families, even striking up relationships with pregnant women to abuse their babies. Deputy Director of Investigations at the NCA, Graham Gardner, said the ring ‘has got tentacles that go round the world’.

The men, who did not know each other outside of their involvement in the abuse, led respectable lives – including a married former actor and a businessman – and concealed their activities from the outside world until they were unmasked. Gardner said:

“They don’t stand out as monsters, but they are monsters in disguise. We rarely see criminal behaviour involving the sexual abuse of children to this degree.

“This is serious organised crime at its worst. The men involved in this group actively targeted families to facilitate the sexual abuse of their children, toddlers and babies. The depravity of these men appeared to know no bounds and is without doubt as vile as we have seen.”

The NCA launched its investigation, last September after Toms contacted police and admitted he had abused a child.

Their inquiries led to the unmasking of the ring operating across the UK, which had links to other paedophiles across the world.

In the weeks that followed, the other six members were arrested and a further two victims were identified. Another 21 children have been the subject of safeguarding measures in relation to the investigation.

The NCA has worked closely with the Avon and Somerset, Bedfordshire, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Humberside, Wiltshire and Sussex forces, as well as the Crown Prosecution Service and nine local authorities.

Police combed the suspects’ electronic communications and established that contact between them began on adult online sex forums, which are publicly accessible and legal to use.

Investigators recovered Skype chat logs that recorded conversations between the men, which were described as “disgusting” and “abhorrent” by police.

Members of a British paedophile ring who attacked babies and toddlers and streamed the abuse online have been sentenced to a total of 78 years in prison today.

The judge at Bristol Crown Court described all seven men as “beyond human instinct and evil”.

They had been convicted of 30 child sex abuse offences, including conspiracy to rape and the rape of a child under the age of 13.

Senior investigating officer Ian Glover said it was a very disturbing case.

“I would describe this group of paedophiles as one of the most dangerous group of offenders I’ve ever come across,” he said.

“They’re abusing extremely young children, they’re ingratiating themselves with young families, and not only abusing the victims, but then put it out on the world wide web for others to see.”

The group will remain on licence when released, and then be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The ring preyed on the families of the youngsters they targeted, in one case grooming a mother and father before their baby was born.

Members would often travel long distances to carry out sickening attacks together, or watch the abuse over the internet if only one had access to a victim.

Chilling online chat revealed that members of the gang, who lived across the UK, would offer advice to others on how to drug young victims.

The seven men are aged between 31 and 51 and include three previously convicted sex offenders.

They are:

* John Denham, formally known as Benjamin Harrop (aged 50) from Wiltshire

* Matthew Stansfield (aged 35) from Hampshire – a convicted sex offender

* Adam Toms (aged 33) from Somerset

* Christopher Knight (aged 35) from Manchester

* Robin Hollyson, previously known as Robin Fallick (aged 31) from Bedfordshire – a convicted sex offender

* David Harsley (aged 51) from East Yorkshire – a convicted sex offender

* Matthew Lisk (aged 33) from East Sussex

For the mere act of submitting documents to the International Criminal Court detailing Israel’s ongoing human rights violations and history of war crimes on Thursday, the Palestinian Authority is now facing a barrage of threats and rebukes from U.S. lawmakers and the White House.

The warnings followed the PA Foreign Ministry’s submission of documents to the ICC in the Hague on Thursday which provided prosecutors with information regarding Israel’s policies relating to last summer’s seven-week military assault on Gaza, the existence of illegal settlements, and continued mass detention of Palestinians living under occupation.

“The United States has made it clear that we oppose actions against Israel at the ICC as counterproductive,” White House National Security Council spokesman Alistair Baskey said in response to the filing.

A handful of congressional representatives have already threatened to withhold $400 million in aid for the West Bank.

“By formally submitting allegations against Israeli forces to the ICC Chief Prosecutor, President [Mahmoud] Abbas has triggered a provision in U.S. law that suspends all economic assistance to the PA,” said Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee in a statement.

While the documents themselves have not been publicly disclosed, Palestinian diplomats and human rights groups discussed their contents with reporters.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has already launched an initial probe into Israeli war crimes and is weighing whether to launch a more serious investigation. Because Palestine is now officially a member of the ICC, even if Bensouda’s investigation does not bear fruit, Palestinians officials maintain they can still issue their own complaint.

“The challenge is that these are long and drawn out processes that may not result in an outcome for five, ten, or 20 years,” Yousef Munayyer, executive director for the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, told Common Dreams.

“It’s very important that Palestinians are looking at different venues through which they can advance their rights.”

That, in fact, is just what Palestinian civil society and social movement organizations are doing through multiple, ongoing efforts to win self-determination, from protest movements throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem to the global call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel.

Meanwhile, the human rights crisis in Palestine continues to escalate amid growing international condemnation of Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies, including from the United Nations.

However, Israel has historically dodged accountability for human rights violations, thanks in large part to backing from world powers, including the United States.

Amid this climate, the small act of seeking redress from the ICC could result in severe repercussions. When the Palestinian Authority applied to join the court earlier this year, Israel swiftly punished them by seizing and withholding millions of dollars in tax transfers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed earlier this year,

“We will not let [Israeli army] soldiers and officers to be dragged to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.”

But as Washington Post reporter William Booth points out,

“If Israel were ever prosecuted by the court, the defendant would not be a conscript but a top Israeli commander or Netanyahu himself.”

It is not clear at this point if Netanyahu will, in fact, ever see charges under this global body.
