African Bishops against the Vatican Move to Destroy the Family*

A consultative meeting of African prelates held last week in Accra, Ghana, has culminated in the 45 bishops and 5 cardinals representing episcopal conferences across the continent expressing their intention to present a united determination to defend Church teaching about marriage and family at the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the Family.

At the opening ceremonies of the meeting, Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, appealed to the bishops of Africa to remain united and courageous in opposing policies that are detrimental to positive family values.

“I encourage you to speak with clarity and with one credible voice and with filial love of the Church. Be conscious of the mission of the Church; protect the sacredness of marriage which is now being attacked by all forms of ideologies that intend to destroy the family in Africa. Do not be afraid to stress the teaching of the Church on marriage,” said the cardinal.

He urged the bishops to speak out against national and international policies that are inimical to the true value and meaning of marriage and family.

“The bishops,” Cardinal Sarah said, “need to identify themselves with the truth and to get their political leaders on the continent not to endorse laws and policies that go against the sanctity of marriage and family.”

The meeting was organized by the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) on the theme, “The Family in Africa: What Experiences and What Contributions to the XIV Ordinary Assembly of the Synod.”

“Africa will speak with one voice at the next Synod – with one voice we will present the challenges and successes of family life in Africa,” SECAM president Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi of Angola assured the assembled prelates.

Among the presentations at the meeting, Cardinal D. Berhaneyesus Souraphiel of Ethiopia emphasized the importance and relevance of the voice of Africa at the Synod on the Family.

“Bishops of the continent … have clear and concordant ideas, and can go forward methodically and courageously, with the consciousness of a great mandate: to build up the Church!” said Cardinal Souraphiel.

After the presentations, His Eminence Christian Cardinal Tumi, Archbishop Emeritus of Douala, Cameroon, invited the future Synod Fathers to remain united and not to be overly worried about the false new doctrines that destabilize the Church.

In the same vein, he called for a rejection of the language used by movements that advocate the destruction of the family in order to avoid legitimizing them.

“We must start from faith, affirm it and live it in order to evangelize the cultures in depth. The Church in Africa must feel solidarity with sister churches of the West, who now live a drama on the level of the families that increasingly are being questioned by ideologies that are deadly to the family,” said Cardinal Tumi.

In the closing communiqué of the meeting in Accra, the bishops of Africa said that at the upcoming Synod on the Family they would offer “a clear affirmation of family and marriage values according to the Word of God and the doctrine of the Church.”

The Synod on the Family will take place at the Vatican from October 4 to 25, 2015.

600 Million Samsung Phones Exposed to Control by Hackers*

A software vulnerability on hundreds of millions of Samsung Galaxy phones allows hackers—civilian or government—to “look through the phones’ camera, listen to the microphone, read incoming and outgoing texts and install apps,” according to researchers cited in The Independent.

Until Samsung fixes the problem, there is little owners can do beyond keeping their phones off unsecured wireless Internet networks.

The Independent reports:

The hack works by exploiting a problem with the Samsung IME keyboard, a re-packaged version of SwiftKey that the company puts in Samsung Galaxy keyboards. That software periodically asks a server whether it needs updating — but hackers can easily get in the way of that request, pretend to be the server, and send malicious code to the phone.

It doesn’t matter if Samsung users are using the keyboard or not, because it is still making the requests. But users of SwiftKey on other Android phones seem to be safe, because the problem appears to be isolated to Samsung’s version of the software.

There are usually protections in place that stop hackers from performing what is called a “man in the middle attack”, by encrypting communication with the server, as well as ones to stop any malicious code from getting too deep into the phone. But Samsung has given its version of the software special permissions, which means that hackers can get through the protections in Android that stop third-party apps from tampering with other bits of the device.

Though staying away from unsecured wifi networks will make users less likely to be hit by the problem, it doesn’t mean that they’re safe. Hackers could still get in the way of the messages during the course of normal browsing.

Researchers have confirmed that the exploit works on versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, the S6 and Galaxy S4 Mini. But it may also be active on other Samsung Galaxy phones, since the keyboard software.

Samsung is reported to have provided a patch to mobile network operators, who must push Android updates out themselves. But it’s unclear whether any networks have done so yet, and they are often slow to push out both incremental Android updates as well as security fixes.

SwiftKey has confirmed that the problem doesn’t affect the version of SwiftKey that’s available to download for any Android or iOS device from their app stores.

“We supply Samsung with the core technology that powers the word predictions in their keyboard,” a SwiftKey statement said. “It appears that the way this technology was integrated on Samsung devices introduced the security vulnerability. We are doing everything we can to support our long-time partner Samsung in their efforts to resolve this obscure but important security issue.”

This 19-Year-Old May Have Discovered The Cure For Colon Cancer…*

By Amanda Froelich

As the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world, colorectal cancer is a concern not to be taken lightly. It is estimated that 1.4 million cases were diagnosed in 2012, and without proper dietary and lifestyle modifications, will only increase in the near future. And while a pescetarian diet (vegetarian that includes fish) is estimated to

But while a pescetarian diet (vegetarian that includes fish) is estimated to reduce one’s likelihood of developing cancer of the colon by at least 20%, a Chicago-based teen may be on the leading edge of a new breakthrough that has potential to eradicate the disease completely.

While working at a Rush University lab while still in high school, 19-year-old Kevin created tests with an experimental colon cancer vaccine that proved 100 percent effective in tests on young mice. A vaccine is now being developed that could work on seniors.

Passionate to pursue a treatment for cancer after his own family was affected, this Chicago teen is pursuing a cure for all the right reasons.

“My friends, family members have died from cancer,” Stonewall, who is a rising freshman at the University of Wisconsin said in the Intel video above. “A lot of people are impacted by cancer. So I felt it was my role to step up and do something about it.”

The results of his research were presented at the national meeting for the Society for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer in Washington, D.C., and he is listed as lead author.

As reports, Stonewall has spent the last year at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where as a sophomore he has been further researching a colon cancer vaccine that may “possibly down the road eradicate colon cancer.”

It was after reviewing research suggesting that a chemotherapeutic agent might help kill off other kinds of cancer cells – and promote a healthy immune response – that Stonewall set out to test whether the potential colon cancer vaccine worked on both younger and older mice.

He used a high concentration of mitoxantrone — a prescription drug that treats certain types of cancers, and administered this potential vaccine to young and old mice, and then injected the vaccinated mice with aggressive colon cancer cells.

Stonewall’s task was then to measure responses, including the makeup of key immune cells called dendritic cells, as well as tumor growth and survival rates.

After three days of living with the vaccine, Stonewall noticed that all of the young mice’s tumours were eliminated. They also demonstrated immunity to colon cancer. None of the older mice were protected, however, leading to tumour growth.

At present, Stonewall’s research has helped determine a need for a vaccine that would work on older subjects, say scientists. Because two-thirds of colon cancer patients are elderly, this finding is clinically important.

Stonewall “should be heralded for helping to develop more effective colon cancer treatments that will impact the elderly, the population that is most susceptible to colon cancer,” said Carl Ruby, the Rush University professor who operated the lab where Stonewall did his research. “He has all the tools. He will go far.”
