Muslimah Graduates from Harvard Aged 20*

Muslimah Graduates from Harvard Aged 20*

By Nadine Osman

A Nigerian American woman has made headlines around the world after graduating from Harvard with a neurobiology degree aged just 20. Saheela Ibraheem from New Jersey was accepted to Harvard and thirteen other universities at the tender age of 15.

After skipping the sixth and ninth grades, Ibraheem received a near-perfect score on the SAT and was also accepted to MIT, Princeton and Columbia before settling on Harvard after falling in love with the campus.

Ibraheem has long been in the spotlight for her academic achievements. At 16, she was named to a list of “The World’s 50 Smartest Teenagers,” which led her to be invited to the White House in early March, where she was introduced to the President and first lady at a reception to kick off Black History Month.

“She’s like the State Department and the National Institutes of Health all rolled into one,” Obama said during a short speech.

“Young people like this inspire our future.”

Ibraheem became interested in neurobiology in high school when she picked up a copy of “Gray’s Anatomy” at the school library.

Ibraheem’s parents are both numerically inclined. Her father is a quantitative analyst for a New York bank, and her mother is an accountant. She has three younger brothers, two of whom are in their first years at Yale University and Dartmouth College.

Being younger than her Harvard classmates didn’t prove too difficult. Ibraheem recalled that one first meeting with a classmate devolved into an argument about how old she really was. Other than that, she said that being too young to buy some cold medicines or to see R-rated movies were the most significant obstacles.

Ibraheem has been a member of the Harvard Islamic Society, the Science Club for Girls, which provides after-school mentoring, and, Dreamporte, which uses 3-D technology to teach geography and world culture to foster children.

When asked what advice she had for incoming students, Ibraheem said that they shouldn’t shy away from challenging classes, but that they also shouldn’t sacrifice sleep and free time just to study endlessly.

“There are so many new people. Meet as many as you can. Maybe try out extra curricula’s you didn’t [try] before,” Ibraheem said.

Ibraheem said her Harvard experience transformed her from a shy person to someone comfortable meeting people, talking with them, and listening to them.

“[It was] definitely enlightening, transformative, unique,” she said.

U.K. Gang Found Guilty of Raping Babies*

U.K. Gang Found Guilty of Raping Babies*

By Nadine Osman

A gang of white paedophiles who raped and abused babies and children under the age of five in attacks that were streamed over the internet are facing lengthy prison sentences after being found guilty.

The gang of seven white men aged between 30 and 51 habitually targeted children in Yorkshire, the South East, and the South West. They faced more than 30 charges, including the rape of a child, conspiracy to rape a child, sexual activity with a child and administering a substance with intent against three victims – a baby, a toddler and a pre-school age child.

The shocking details were reported in full for the first time after the last of the trials ended on April 22 at Bristol Crown Court. They preyed on the families of the children they targeted, in one case grooming a couple before their baby was born.

Members would often travel long distances to carry out the attacks together or watch the abuse over the internet if only one had access to a victim.

Online chat revealed that the gang would offer advice and guidance to others on drugging their victims. John Denham, 49, from Wiltshire, and Matthew Stansfield, 34, from Hampshire were found guilty earlier last month.

Robin Hollyson, 30, from Bedfordshire; Christopher Knight, 35, from Manchester; Adam Toms, 33, from Somerset; David Harsley, 51, from Humberside and Matthew Lisk, 32, from East Sussex – had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges they faced. They all face significant prison sentences and some could be jailed for life when they return to court on a date to be fixed. Investigators believe there are other victims.

Police described the men as “monsters in disguise”, working together to commit some of the most “vile and depraved’ child sex offences the authorities have ever seen. The NCA, which led the investigation, said the perverts met after discussing their sexual interests in young children on legitimate social media and adult sex sites. The gang was described as “incredibly skilled” at grooming victims’ families, even striking up relationships with pregnant women to abuse their babies. Deputy Director of Investigations at the NCA, Graham Gardner, said the ring ‘has got tentacles that go round the world’.

The men, who did not know each other outside of their involvement in the abuse, led respectable lives – including a married former actor and a businessman – and concealed their activities from the outside world until they were unmasked. Gardner said:

“They don’t stand out as monsters, but they are monsters in disguise. We rarely see criminal behaviour involving the sexual abuse of children to this degree.

“This is serious organised crime at its worst. The men involved in this group actively targeted families to facilitate the sexual abuse of their children, toddlers and babies. The depravity of these men appeared to know no bounds and is without doubt as vile as we have seen.”

The NCA launched its investigation, last September after Toms contacted police and admitted he had abused a child.

Their inquiries led to the unmasking of the ring operating across the UK, which had links to other paedophiles across the world.

In the weeks that followed, the other six members were arrested and a further two victims were identified. Another 21 children have been the subject of safeguarding measures in relation to the investigation.

The NCA has worked closely with the Avon and Somerset, Bedfordshire, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Humberside, Wiltshire and Sussex forces, as well as the Crown Prosecution Service and nine local authorities.

Police combed the suspects’ electronic communications and established that contact between them began on adult online sex forums, which are publicly accessible and legal to use.

Investigators recovered Skype chat logs that recorded conversations between the men, which were described as “disgusting” and “abhorrent” by police.

Members of a British paedophile ring who attacked babies and toddlers and streamed the abuse online have been sentenced to a total of 78 years in prison today.

The judge at Bristol Crown Court described all seven men as “beyond human instinct and evil”.

They had been convicted of 30 child sex abuse offences, including conspiracy to rape and the rape of a child under the age of 13.

Senior investigating officer Ian Glover said it was a very disturbing case.

“I would describe this group of paedophiles as one of the most dangerous group of offenders I’ve ever come across,” he said.

“They’re abusing extremely young children, they’re ingratiating themselves with young families, and not only abusing the victims, but then put it out on the world wide web for others to see.”

The group will remain on licence when released, and then be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The ring preyed on the families of the youngsters they targeted, in one case grooming a mother and father before their baby was born.

Members would often travel long distances to carry out sickening attacks together, or watch the abuse over the internet if only one had access to a victim.

Chilling online chat revealed that members of the gang, who lived across the UK, would offer advice to others on how to drug young victims.

The seven men are aged between 31 and 51 and include three previously convicted sex offenders.

They are:

* John Denham, formally known as Benjamin Harrop (aged 50) from Wiltshire

* Matthew Stansfield (aged 35) from Hampshire – a convicted sex offender

* Adam Toms (aged 33) from Somerset

* Christopher Knight (aged 35) from Manchester

* Robin Hollyson, previously known as Robin Fallick (aged 31) from Bedfordshire – a convicted sex offender

* David Harsley (aged 51) from East Yorkshire – a convicted sex offender

* Matthew Lisk (aged 33) from East Sussex

For the mere act of submitting documents to the International Criminal Court detailing Israel’s ongoing human rights violations and history of war crimes on Thursday, the Palestinian Authority is now facing a barrage of threats and rebukes from U.S. lawmakers and the White House.

The warnings followed the PA Foreign Ministry’s submission of documents to the ICC in the Hague on Thursday which provided prosecutors with information regarding Israel’s policies relating to last summer’s seven-week military assault on Gaza, the existence of illegal settlements, and continued mass detention of Palestinians living under occupation.

“The United States has made it clear that we oppose actions against Israel at the ICC as counterproductive,” White House National Security Council spokesman Alistair Baskey said in response to the filing.

A handful of congressional representatives have already threatened to withhold $400 million in aid for the West Bank.

“By formally submitting allegations against Israeli forces to the ICC Chief Prosecutor, President [Mahmoud] Abbas has triggered a provision in U.S. law that suspends all economic assistance to the PA,” said Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee in a statement.

While the documents themselves have not been publicly disclosed, Palestinian diplomats and human rights groups discussed their contents with reporters.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has already launched an initial probe into Israeli war crimes and is weighing whether to launch a more serious investigation. Because Palestine is now officially a member of the ICC, even if Bensouda’s investigation does not bear fruit, Palestinians officials maintain they can still issue their own complaint.

“The challenge is that these are long and drawn out processes that may not result in an outcome for five, ten, or 20 years,” Yousef Munayyer, executive director for the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, told Common Dreams.

“It’s very important that Palestinians are looking at different venues through which they can advance their rights.”

That, in fact, is just what Palestinian civil society and social movement organizations are doing through multiple, ongoing efforts to win self-determination, from protest movements throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem to the global call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel.

Meanwhile, the human rights crisis in Palestine continues to escalate amid growing international condemnation of Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies, including from the United Nations.

However, Israel has historically dodged accountability for human rights violations, thanks in large part to backing from world powers, including the United States.

Amid this climate, the small act of seeking redress from the ICC could result in severe repercussions. When the Palestinian Authority applied to join the court earlier this year, Israel swiftly punished them by seizing and withholding millions of dollars in tax transfers.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed earlier this year,

“We will not let [Israeli army] soldiers and officers to be dragged to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.”

But as Washington Post reporter William Booth points out,

“If Israel were ever prosecuted by the court, the defendant would not be a conscript but a top Israeli commander or Netanyahu himself.”

It is not clear at this point if Netanyahu will, in fact, ever see charges under this global body.

Belgian Analyst: U.S. Born out of Violence Needs War to Survive*

During 25 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO has not forgotten even for a moment about the idea of an attack on Russia, Belgian political scientist and director of geopolitical research centre Euro-Rus Kris Roman said in an exclusive interview with Regnum.

“But they had no pretext. Now, due to the chaos in Ukraine, this opportunity appeared and it is actively developed. The older generation, which had been brought up on the propaganda against the Soviet Union, has already accepted the idea of an inevitable conflict with Russia,” Roman said.

The Belgian expert believes that with the collapse of the USSR, NATO should have stopped existing, but somehow the alliance “has grown to the size of the Universe because the motto ‘The Russians are coming!’ is relevant again.”

Roman said that when the Belgian defence minister had announced that 1,000 Belgian soldiers would be sent to the Baltic states in the event of a “potential Russian attack.”

The United States has repeatedly criticized Europe for small contributions to the NATO budget, saying that the EU tries to save money at the expense of its military budget.

“For America, this is unacceptable, because the whole economy of this country is built on the military theme — to maintain its economic growth, the United States needs a war every 4 years, otherwise the economic growth slows down, it’s not a secret. But the United States cannot fight alone, they need puppet-allies, but NATO members, which are suffering a crisis, cannot increase the budget allocations to the military budget, so Europe is under pressure,” Kris Roman said.

Russophobia Reminds a Disease

The Belgian expert noted that Russophobia is like a disease as “once infected, you become incurable.”

The European analyst also commented on the information war aimed against Russia noting that it had been previously used with regard to Iraq and Libya.

“It is no longer possible to lie and not be punished. Our media simply prefers to remain silent in order not to be caught lying. What they can say? That the Russians were right? That the Russian army is not there [fighting in Donbass], while the Ukrainian army is at war with its own people? They cannot say such things. The official motto is to blame Russia.”

“Remember the downed Malaysian Boeing [MH17 that crashed near Donetsk in July 2014]? Our media began screaming that it is Russia’s fault when it was still falling. Now there are facts that the Russians did not do it, and, as a result, we no longer hear about the investigation. Silence says that the truth is not on the side of Belgian and European media. If they ever had something [regarding Russia’s involvement in the crash], they would have shouted it from morning to evening,” he concluded.
