Top Scientists Tell Russia Foetus is Human. Ban Abortion.*

A group of two dozen leading Russian and international scientists from various disciplines met last week in Moscow to make the case that science overwhelmingly confirms the humanity of the unborn child from the moment of conception – and to demand that “prenatal infanticide” be banned in the country.

TwinfoetusmainSergei Chesnokov, the president of the Moscow Pro-Life Festival, which organized the symposium, told LifeSiteNews that such a scientific symposium on the humanity of the unborn child from a pro-life perspective “has never been organized before in Russia or in any post-Soviet country.”

He said that the symposium was organized in light of a clause in the Russian penal law that says that the moment when life begins should be determined by the best scientific evidence.

In a draft resolution that will be submitted to the Russian government together with the reams of evidence presented by the scientists at the symposium, participants state that, in their view, the evidence is overwhelming that, “Each human life begins at the moment of conception.

The resolution goes on to denounce philosophies that justify the killing of an unborn child based upon the fact that the child has not reached a certain stage of development, and says that participants “support all initiatives aimed at restricting and prohibiting all forms of prenatal infanticide.”

According to organizers, scientists and attendees at the symposium came from 100 cities and 12 different countries. They represented various sciences, including embryology, sociology, psychology, obstetrics and gynaecology, among others.

Dr. Maureen Condic, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology from the University of Utah, explained that there is “universal” agreement that the unborn child can detect pain as early as eight weeks, and certainly by the second trimester.

“And yet we tolerate ripping a human being of this age apart in the womb during abortion,” she said.

Another impassioned presentation was given by Dr. Gregory Brekhman, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology from Israel’s Integrative Research Institute, on the “emotional life of a prenatal child,” pointing to evidence that unborn babies are conscious, and that children can even remember their time in their mother’s wombs.

“The subject matter has been the essence of my life,” Dr. Brekhman said, declaring,

“A foetus in the uterus is a mentally functioning being that should be respectfully called a child.”

Dr. Gregory Brekhman, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology from Israel’s Integrative Research Institute, speaks on the “emotional life of a prenatal child.”

Also present at the opening of the festival was Russian Orthodox Archpriest Dmitri Smirnov, head of the Patriarchate’s Commission on the Family, Protection of Motherhood, and Childhood, widely credited as being a major driving force behind the formation of Russia’s pro-life movement following the collapse of Communism in the country.

Archpriest Smirnov told participants that Moscow’s Patriarch, Alexy II, had personally blessed his participation in the symposium.

Modern society insists on the freedom of any perversion,” he said, including

“the perversion of allowing the government to pay for the killing of a child by his mother.”

He expressed his hope that participants in the symposium would be able to counteract the “mass disinformation media,” and to plant in the minds of youth “reasonable science or doctrine based on the holy frankness of God.”

Archpriest Dmitri Smirnov addresses the symposium

The symposium is the first of three planned, each intended to bring together the cream of the crop of specialists in their fields to address a particular aspect of the abortion issue. Future symposiums will focus on how abortion and abortifacient drugs affect women, and the link between abortion and eugenics and neo-Malthusianism.

Festival President Sergei Chesnokov said that the three symposiums are arranged around the theme of how abortion kills either: the unborn child, the nation, or the child’s mother.

Israel’s Operation Protective Edge cost more than 2,000 lives last summer

The Government has lifted any remaining restrictions on arms sales to Israel following a year-long review of 12 export licences for weaponry which it admitted may have been used in last year’s bombardment of Gaza.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid’s department said it was now satisfied that the licences for material including components for military radar and tanks meet the UK’s export criteria, which ban any sale of arms where there is a “clear risk” that they may be used to commit serious breaches of human rights.

The Coalition government was forced to review its weaponry sales to Israel during last summer’s Operation Protective Edge to halt Hamas rocket attacks, which cost more than 2,000 lives, including those of hundreds of Palestinian civilians.

Britain’s subsequent refusal to suspend the 12 licences led to the resignation of Foreign Office minister Baroness Warsi, who said Britain’s stance was “morally indefensible”.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) last year announced a further review of weaponry sales to Israel as a result of which it yesterday said it would now apply its normal “criteria” to all exports and was lifting its previous threat that licences would be suspended in the event of fresh hostilities between Israel and the Occupied Territories.

In a statement, BIS said:

“Following the review the Government has concluded that in the present context where the facts are clearer these criteria may now be applied, without any additional measures.”

The Independent revealed last month that Britain approved fresh arms deals with Israel worth £4m within weeks of the end of the Gaza conflict, with the first licence being granted within six days of the announcement of a ceasefire.

Campaigners said the Government’s investigation had failed to pinpoint the extent of the use of British weaponry in the most recent and previous conflicts.

Andrew Smith, of the Campaign Against Arms Trade, said:

This is an exceptionally weak and tokenistic review, and it is unclear why it has taken almost a year to complete. Successive governments have said it is likely that UK arms were used against the people of Gaza in 2009 and 2014.”

How UK investors Devastated Tanzanian Farmers*

How UK investors Devastated Tanzanian Farmers*

By Richard Smallteacher

A flagship rice plantation in Tanzania run by UK investors has allegedly destroyed the livelihoods of local smallholder farmers, driven them into debt and impacted the local environment, according to a new report published by the Oakland Institute. The report was co-authored with Greenpeace Africa and Global Justice Now.

In 2008, Agrica, a UK company run out of the island of Guernsey, acquired the 5,818 hectare Mngeta farm in Kilombero, one of Tanzania’s most fertile agricultural regions. Agrica set up a company called Kilombero Plantations Limited (KPL) and cleared the land to grow rice using a mechanized method of farming developed in Madagascar. In addition KPL started to supply local smallholder farmers with training, seeds and supplies to engage in intensive rice cultivation.

In the last seven years, KPL has become the largest single rice producer in East Africa. KPL markets its own “Mama Mchele” (Mrs. Rice) brand of rice from Mgneta and 5,000 smallholder farmers working on contract.

The project is regularly touted as an example of the Kilimo Kwanza (Agriculture First) initiative, launched by President Jakaya Kikwete. (Some 75% of the country’s 45 million citizens are farmers)

“For 50 years aid agencies have been trying to lift the smallholder from subsistence to surplus – and they’ve failed,” Carter Coleman, CEO of Agrica, told the BBC.

“We’re the sort of showcase project,” he added to the UK-based Centre for Investigative Journalism.

“Before, life was so tough – but after joining the group and being trained this started to improve my life,” Betrida Kiganga told the BBC. She says that she is able to support herself and her five children with the income from the company.

“Now we’re harvesting more. We were only getting ten sacks, now we’re getting up to twenty in the same plot,” she added.

With such glowing results, international investors such as the Capricorn Investment Group and Norfund, the Norwegian government-owned investment company have been happy to put money into the project. In 2013, Justine Greening, the UK Secretary of State for International Development, announced a £6.7 million ($10.7 million) loan to the company to help finance a rice husk gasification plant to support KPL and the contract smallholders.

But complaints soon started to surface in the community, making development aid watchers suspicious.

“When the Oakland Institute researchers initiated the work, they did expect to come across positive stories bearing in mind how the company had been portrayed internationally,” writes Mikael Bergius, a fellow at the Oakland Institute in California.

“It was therefore surprising to experience the strong sense of negativity among respondents, and in the villages in general, towards KPL.”

Irresponsible Investment” – the Oakland Institute’s new report – estimates that as much as a quarter of the 5,800-hectare farm was essentially taken from some 230 households who live in the surrounding villages of Lukolongo, Mngeta and Mkangawalo. The activists interviewed 40 community members who say that they were given just three acres of substitute land in exchange plus a maximum supplement of just 30,000 Tanzanian shillings ($17) for anyone who claimed to have farmed more than three acres. By comparison, the costs of renting land in the area is 100,000 Tanzanian shillings ($55) a year per acre.

Coleman disagrees with the conclusions of the report, saying that KPL had compensated local farmers in a fair manner.
“Claims of land ownership beyond 3 acres were difficult to substantiate if they were not under cultivation and had no paper trail. Anyone could point at an area of bush and call it his own,” Coleman wrote in a reply to the Oakland Institute.

“Perhaps these families may have been fraudulently allocated more than 3 acres of land by the village government which had no authority to allocate land; or perhaps they purchased an area from someone who had no right to sell the land.”

Coleman also noted that that KPL built a total of 82 concrete houses with raised floors and tin roofs and separate outhouse for the displaced households. All told, he claims that Agrica spends almost $700,000 a year in the community in salaries and subsidized health care.

But the activists say that this is not good enough.

“Building school rooms and a health centre are positive of course,” wrote Anuradha Mittal, executive director of Oakland Institute, in a response to Coleman.

“But true development is about ensuring communities and future generations have the means to live a life with dignity in a healthy environment. By taking away land and undermining the livelihoods of local farmers, the Agrica project jeopardizes the ability of local communities to enjoy sustainable development.”

In particular the new report alleges that Agrica foisted an expensive and unsustainable agricultural model on the local farmers.

One interviewee, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Oakland Institute:

“Life now is very bad as compared to before. Previously I was able to earn money from my own farm, but now I have to earn money by doing various small jobs for cash. Before, I was able to cultivate my own food. Now I need to buy the food with the small income I have.”

Yet other local farmers complained that KPL was using chemicals that were polluting neighbouring farms:

The chemicals from KPL drifted into my farm and destroyed my maize,” another Oakland Institute interviewee said.

“That season I was not able to harvest anything because the whole farm was destroyed… our household economy was negatively affected and it also led to a shortage of food in the household that year.”
Coleman says that the company is not to blame for this but Greenpeace Africa says that such examples prove that Agrica’s very development model is flawed.
“In an area known as Tanzania’s food basket due to its fertile soil, this uncovers the real agenda of Agrica,”

Glen Tyler, agriculture campaigner for Greenpeace Africa, said in a press release.

“They have opened up new markets for the products of international agribusiness that are damaging for both people and the environment.”

Three Senior Psychologists Fired After US Torture Scandal*

A 542-page report issued this month concluded that American Psychology Association leaders colluded with the US department of defence and aided the CIA in loosening professional ethics and other guidelines to permit psychologist participation in torture. Photograph: Charles Ommanney/Getty Images

The torture scandal consuming the US’s premiere professional association of psychologists has cost three senior officials their jobs, part of a reckoning that reformers hope will lead to criminal prosecutions.

As the American Psychological Association copes with the damage reaped by an independent investigation that found it complicit in US torture, the group announced on Tuesday that its chief executive officer, its deputy CEO and its communications chief are no longer with the APA.

All three were implicated in the 542-page report issued this month by former federal prosecutor David Hoffman, who concluded that APA leaders “colluded” with the US department of defence and aided the CIA in loosening professional ethics and other guidelines to permit psychologist participation in torture.

Despite rumors of the three oustings circulating for over a week, the APA framed the departures of long-time executive officials Norman Anderson and Michael Honaker as “retirements”. Rhea Farberman, who served as APA’s communications director for 22 years, “resigned”, the APA said in a statement.

While CEO Anderson’s retirement was scheduled before the Hoffman report was released, the APA stated:

“Dr Anderson felt that moving up his retirement date to the end of 2015 would allow the association to take another step in the important process of organizational healing, and to facilitate APA’s continuing focus on its broader mission.”

Anderson, Honaker and Farberman join Stephen Behnke, the APA’s former ethics chief also implicated in torture, in the first wave of APA departures as the organization seeks to rebuild its credibility. Behnke has issued a combative statement threatening unspecified legal action.

“This is a major step toward reforming the APA and the profession,” said Stephen Soldz, a long-time APA critic on torture affiliated with Physicians for Human Rights.

“I hope it is only the beginning of change. The selection of the right CEO will be crucial.”

Soldz is part of a group pushing for the APA to refer the Hoffman report to the FBI and justice department for potential criminal inquiries. Thus far, the APA has committed to providing the report to the Senate committees overseeing the military and CIA, and a call to end all psychologist participation in US interrogation and detention operations is slated for APA consideration at a major conference next month.

Thus far, there is no indication from the justice department that it intends to revisit the politically fraught question of legal accountability for torture, which ended in 2012 without prosecutions. The defence department, which still assigns psychologists to Guantanamo Bay, has yet to comment; and the White House has stayed out of the fray.

Hoffman’s report identifies Behnke, a defense department contractor, as a chief culprit in maneuvering the APA toward loosening its opposition to torture while denying doing any such thing; and the departed APA officials as complicit.

Behnke undertook “extensive efforts to manipulate” the APA’s council of representatives “in an effort to undermine attempts to keep psychologists from being involved in national security interrogations”, Hoffman found. Other “APA officials involved with Behnke in these efforts included “Anderson, Honaker [and] Farberman”.

Nevertheless, Farberman insisted to the press that the APA had taken a consistent position against torture.

After the Guardian reported that the APA had declined to take action against a psychologist who participated in a brutal Guantanamo interpretation, Farberman told the Guardian:

“A thorough review of these public materials and our standing policies will clearly demonstrate that APA will not tolerate psychologist participation in torture.”

It is unclear if the three officials are the APA’s last to leave. Barry Anton, the APA’s current president, is also listed in the “Key Players” section, as Anton is said to have “participated in the selection” of members of a critical task force on psychologist involvement in torture that was stacked with US defence department officials.

The APA will meet in Toronto beginning on 6 August for its annual convention, which former president Nadine Koslow told the Guardian she expected to be consumed with the issue of what reforms the organization must adopt in the wake of the Hoffman report.

Pro-Nazi Roots of Planned Parenthood was Never Hidden*

Pro-Nazi Roots of Planned Parenthood was Never Hidden*

By John Nolte

Led by a mainstream media in full-emotional racial-blackmail mode, we just had a national debate about the Confederate Flag. With the news that Planned Parenthood is trafficking in dead baby parts — news our mainstream media is almost certain to ignore or downplay — the time seems proper to re-examine the racist, pro-Nazi roots of Planned Parenthood, an organization found by vile racist Margaret Sanger, an organization that receives nearly a half-billion dollars a year in taxpayer dollars.

Sanger was the birth control proponent who founded Planned Parenthood nearly 70 years ago. Her motives had nothing to do with liberating women or women’s rights, she was a eugenicist — someone who believed that through abortion, birth control, and forced sterilization society could “assist the [human] race in the elimination of the unfit.”

In a piece titled “Birth Control and Racial Betterment,” Sanger wrote in part:

Before eugenists and others who are labouring for racial betterment can succeed, they must first clear the way for Birth Control. Like the advocates of Birth Control, the eugenists, for instance, are seeking to assist the race toward the elimination of the unfit. Both are seeking a single end but they lay emphasis upon different methods.

Eugenists emphasize the mating of healthy couples for the conscious purpose of producing healthy children, the sterilization of the unfit to prevent their populating the world with their kind and they may, perhaps, agree with us that contraception is a necessary measure among the masses of the workers, where wages do not keep pace with the growth of the family and its necessities in the way of food, clothing, housing, medical attention, education and the like.

We who advocate Birth Control, on the other hand, lay all our emphasis upon stopping not only the reproduction of the unfit but upon stopping all reproduction when there is not economic means of providing proper care for those who are born in health. The eugenist also believes that a woman should bear as many healthy children as possible as a duty to the state. We hold that the world is already over-populated. Eugenists imply or insist that a woman’s first duty is to the state; we contend that her duty to herself is her duty to the state.

Who were the unfit? Sanger laid it all out in 1938, when she praised Nazi Germany’s sterilization policies. The unfit (Hat tip: The Federalist) included those suffering from, “gongenital feeble-mindedness; schizophrenia, circular insanity; heredity epilepsy; hereditary chorea (Huntington’s)’ hereditary blindness or deafness; grave hereditary bodily deformity and chronic alcoholism.”

Reports in medical journals state that the indications laid down in the German law are being carefully observed. These are gongenital feeble-mindedness; schizophrenia, circular insanity; heredity epilepsy; hereditary chorea (Huntington’s)’ hereditary blindness or deafness; grave hereditary bodily deformity and chronic alcoholism.

Surely everyone will agree that the children of parents so afflicted are no contribution to the nation for even if they do not inherit these defects they are children of parents so handicapped that life will give them little, owing to their necessarily bad environment.

There are 1,700 special courts and 27 higher courts in Germany to review the cases certified for sterilization there. The rights of the individual could be equally well safeguarded here, but in no case should the rights of society, or which he or she is a member, be disregarded.

Here are the unspeakable things Sanger published about black people in an essay chirpily titled, “What Every Girl Should Know.”:

It is said that the aboriginal Australian, the lowest known species of the human family, just a step higher than the chimpanzee in brain development, has so little sexual control that police authority alone prevents him from obtaining sexual satisfaction on the streets. According to one writer, the rapist has just enough brain development to raise him above the animal, but like the animal, when in heat knows no law except nature which impels him to procreate whatever the result. Every normal man and Woman has the power to control and direct his sexual impulse. Men and women who have it in control and constantly use their brain cells in thinking deeply, are never sensual.

Sanger’s and Planned Parenthood’s racist history is not a secret, for obvious political reasons, it is just not widely reported by the same media that obsesses over a flag. There is little doubt, though, that Hillary Clinton is aware of Sanger’s past, and as the Federalist noted today, in 2009,  Clinton sang many praises about the racist, pro-Nazi eugenicist:

“I admire Margaret Sanger enormously,” Clinton told the event’s attendees.

“Her courage, her tenacity, her vision.”

“When I think about what [Sanger] did all those years ago in Brooklyn,” Clinton gushed.

“I am really in awe of her. And there are a lot of lessons we that can learn from her life and the cause she launched and fought for and sacrificed so greatly.”

The Federalist adds:

Margaret Sanger, for those who are unaware, was a vile racist and eugenicist who dedicated her life to ridding the world of poor black babies, who she deemed the “degenerate and defective.” She was a featured guest of the Ku Klux Klan and a huge proponent of the forced sterilization program of the Nazi regime in the 1930’s.

The Confederate Flag is down. The taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood still stands, primarily in black neighbourhoods — just as its racist founder planned so many years ago.

Netanyahu’s Temper Tantrum over Iran deal has Obama Bearing ‘Gifts’*

President Barack Obama offered Israel even more military aid this week as a consolation prize for the Iran deal, raising the concerns of human rights campaigners who oppose U.S. funding of atrocities against Palestinians.

(Photo: White House/flickr/public domain)

Speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, the same day the accord was reached, Obama said he is ready to hold “intensive discussions” about bolstering Israel’s military, according to unnamed administration officials cited by The New York Times.

However, Netanyahu—who has vigorously opposed diplomacy with Iran—rebuffed the gesture.

Obama indicated in an interview with the Times on Tuesday that Netanyahu is likely holding out to see if he can still sink the Iran deal. Netanyahu “perhaps thinks he can further influence the congressional debate, and I’m confident we’re going to be able to uphold this deal and implement it without Congress preventing that,” said the president.

Due to recently-passed legislation, the U.S. House and Senate will have 60 days to review Tuesday’s agreement between Iran and the United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the European Union. If lawmakers were to vote against the deal, and amass the votes to override a presidential veto, Obama’s hands would be tied on sanctions relief and the deal would sink.

Tuesday was not the first time the U.S. has pledged to increase aid to Israel. Reuters reported in May that, after the $3 billion annual military aid package expires in 2017, payments could dramatically increase to as much as $4 billion.

Any increase in U.S. military aid to Israel is certain to be controversial. Human rights advocates have long opposed the role of the U.S. in arming, financing, and politically backing Israeli occupation, colonization, and war crimes—from Lebanon to Palestine. The Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions urges an immediate end to such payments.

Naomi Dann, media coordinator for right group Jewish Voice for Peace, told Common Dreams, “The fact that Netanyahu’s temper tantrum about the Iran deal could go towards an increase in aid is disturbing, especially as we know that U.S. aid is being used to kill civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.”

We, who have been evicted from our land and territories, and dispossessed of our natural resources,

We, young women, men and communities,

We farmers,

We, who live permanently impoverished, in conflict-ridden areas and under threat by armed groups,

We, who are unemployed and desperate,

We, who leave our land and our families, we who face all possible risks including death because we are left with no other choice than to believe that El Dorado can be found on the other side of the Mediterranean.

We have no need for your increasingly repressive, inhumane and humiliating measures when reaching your borders.

We do not need you to increase your budget to better turn us back, to detain us in your detention centers, to criminalize us.

We do not need your money which:

  • under the guise of loans makes us evermore indebted.
  • leads to the grabbing of land, water and other natural resources.
  • corrupts decision-makers for the sake of development projects to “improve the business climate” which are promoted by the World Bank and the IMF, supporting the agribusiness endeavours of investors and speculators.
  • destabilizes our markets by putting agricultural monopolies in place. For instance, the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, which has been encouraged by the G8 and the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs).

We do not need your money which is spreading like gangrene in the form of corruption and racketeering amongst our rulers, elites and decision-makers.

What we need is for you to let us improve our lives in the context of food sovereignty.

We peasants, men and women, represent approximately 80% of our countries’ populations; we feed more than 70% with our daba hoes, our seeds and our land. We provide 75% of employment.

We need you to let us earn our livelihoods at home.

We no longer want your neoliberal capitalist system, your structural adjustment programs and your so-called support. It is leading to the impoverishment of more and more people; while day by day a handful of elites grow richer. 80 wealthy people on this planet have as much money as 3.5 billion people!

We call upon our States:

  • To work for their people and to respect their rights.
  • To secure the land of farmers and livestock raisers, fishing and marine areas, the forests of hunter gatherers and forestry workers, villages and rural living spaces and to implement collective land rights.
  • To protect our small-scale, family based agriculture, our food systems and our ecosystems by supporting agroecology.
  • Not to ratify the EPAs, to protect local production, to facilitate its cross-border trade and to foster regional integration.
  • Not to be weakened nor blinded by financial pressure, investors, international institutions, the European Union and native elites.

We place our trust in our youth, boys and girls to believe that El Dorado is not to be found on the other side of the Mediterranean, but that El Dorado it is right here below their feet.

Our struggle is committed to seeing agricultural, land, seed, fishery and trade policies to be conceived for and by our young people!
