Brazil vs. the Indigenous Fight against the Belo Monte Dam*

Brazil vs. the Indigenous Fight against the Belo Monte Dam*

By Sophie McAdam

Many of you will have seen these two disturbing images of indigenous abuse by the Brazilian authorities that have been circulating the internet recently. The first depicts a visibly shaken indigenous man being forcibly restrained by a soldier as other members of the military take up arms and run to their positions in the background.

The second shows a mother with a toddler on her hip trying desperately to push back against the armed men surrounding her. Their faces and bodies are obscured by shields, so we can see only their military boots and a single threatening baton. These soldiers tower over the petite woman, whose distressed expression as she struggles against them makes for a very powerful photograph.

The story behind these tragic images relates to indigenous protests against the proposed building of the Belo Monte mega-dam on the Xingu river in the Brazilian Amazon. The dam would flood a vast area of fertile land, dry up parts of the Xingu river, cause huge devastation to the rainforest, and greatly reduce fish stocks along a 100km stretch of river, a food source which the tribal people in the area depend on for their survival.

The Belo Monte dam is just one of many planned under Brazil‘s ‘Accelerated Growth Plan’, which aims to create jobs and boost the economy by building roads, dams and other infrastructure, mainly in the Amazon basin. Belo Monte will be the world’s third largest dam if it goes ahead. It was first proposed in the 1980s, and the fight against it has been brought to the world’s attention by endless protests by tribal people in the area: The Kayapó, Arara, Juruna, Araweté, Xikrin, Asurini and Parakanã Indians all depend on the proposed site for their survival, according to Survival International, a charity that fights for the rights of indigenous people worldwide.

The man and woman shown in the upsetting viral photographs are members of the Kayapó tribe, who have been at the forefront of the battle against this so-called ‘growth’ for three decades and counting.

We don’t want this dam to destroy the ecosystems and the biodiversity that we have taken care of for millenia and which we can still preserve”, the Kayapó explained to their government in an open letter. In another statement given to Survival, one of the tribe‘s elders urged:

“The world must know what is happening here. They must perceive how destroying forests and indigenous people destroys the entire world.”

Huge tribal protests in 2009 were successful in halting the progress of the Belo Monte dam, when the Kayapó warned that its construction would force them to declare war on the government; the rivers would run red with blood before they would stop fighting the proposed ecocide.

The dam will cost over US$10 billion and affect over nine million hectares of pristine rainforest. Although many would argue the economic benefits of such a plan. it’s worth pointing out that while the dam would bring in more than 200,000 workers to the area, it would also force an estimated 20,000 local people from their homes (not to mention many species of wildlife). A large proportion of those humans displaced will be indigenous peoples, who have been living in (and protecting) the area for centuries.

Above (photo by Terence Turner, Survival International): Kayapó form a dance line at an anti-dam protest, Piaraçu, Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 2006. Two hundred representatives of the Mebegokre Kayapó Indians met for five days to discuss the Belo Monte dam and four other dams which will devastate their lands. Almost a decade later, the tribe is still fighting government proposals.

Tribal people are very vulnerable to infections and illnesses from outside; even the common cold can be fatal. The proposed area to be dammed is thought to be home to many uncontacted tribes, who have the right to be left alone to live in harmony with their ancestral lands. The construction would attract large numbers of migrant workers and colonists who are likely to bring diseases to indigenous tribal people, literally putting their lives at risk. There is a high risk of invasion of native territories and violence, and the livelihoods of thousands of tribal people who depend on the forest and river for food and water would be destroyed.

In addition, the Brazilian government’s plans are illegal. Indigenous people have not been properly consulted about the dam, which violates both Brazilian and International law. The Xingu River is one of the Amazon’s main tributaries, and more than 80% of its flow would be diverted by the massive hydro-electric dam. This would have a devastating effect on a vital eco-system, one frequently referred to as ‘the lungs of the world’.

Please share this story if you want to support the Amazon‘s indigenous people in their fight, and consider writing a letter to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to urge her to re-consider Belo Monte and other proposed dams being built in the Amazon.

LeBron James Pledges $41mn to Send 1,100 Ohio Teens to College*

By Jake Anderson

Keeping true to his promise to give back to the community where he grew up, Lebron James announced Monday that his foundation will subsidize the college educations of 1,100 Ohio high school graduates. In order to cover these tuition costs at the University of Akron, the Lebron James Foundation committed $41 million, enough to fund four year scholarships at $9,500 per student.

James remarked on his new charitable endeavour:

“It’s the reason I do what I do. These students have big dreams, and I’m happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They’re going to have to earn it, but I’m excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures.”

Lebron James, one of the most famous—and wealthy—professional athletes in the world, made headlines in recent years when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team to play for the Miami Heat. His much-publicized and demonized “decision” broke the hearts of many local Akron and Cleveland residents, who had revered “King James” and everything he meant for a city—an entire state, in fact—with economic problems and no professional sports championships to speak of since 1964.

James preceded his exaltant return to Cleveland in 2014 with a stunning open letter, in which he stated,

“I feel my calling [in Ohio] goes above basketball. I have a responsibility to lead, in more ways than one, and I take that very seriously. My presence can make a difference in Miami, but I think it can mean more where I’m from. I want kids in Northeast Ohio, like the hundreds of Akron third-graders I sponsor through my foundation, to realize that there’s no better place to grow up. Maybe some of them will come home after college and start a family or open a business. That would make me smile. Our community, which has struggled so much, needs all the talent it can get. In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have. I’m ready to accept the challenge. I’m coming home.”

It appears James is already making good on his promise to give back to his community in a major way. In recent months, James and members of his foundation met multiple times with University of Akron President Dr. Scott Scarborough to discuss long-term plans that would be beneficial for the community. The education department, which will soon be renamed the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education, will begin accepting applications for the scholarships in 2021.

It couldn’t come at a better time for a university that recently announced $40 million in widespread cuts, including the entire baseball program and 215 lost jobs.

India Unveils World’s First 100% Solar-Powered Airport*

India Unveils World’s First 100% Solar-Powered Airport*

By Michaela Whitton

Cochin, a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala, has announced that its international airport has become the world’s first solar-powered airport.

According to a press release, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL/COK) will use power from 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres of land in a project that expects to see savings of 300,000 tons worth of carbon emissions over the next 25 years.

Cochin officials claim to have always been committed to sustainable development. The airport first ventured into the sector in March 2013, when it installed a 100 kWp solar PVP plant for converting light to electricity on the roof of the arrivals block in the terminal.

After the success of this endeavour, they went on to develop a 1MW solar power plant that could produce 40,000 units of electricity.

After finding the 1MW project to be financially viable, CIAL awarded the contract for its latest and grander scale project to engineering company Bosch Ltd. in Bangalore. Work was completed in six months.

The latest upgrade was inaugurated by the Hon. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on August 18th, meaning the airport is now the proud producers of 50,000 – 60,000 units of solar-powered electricity — more than enough to meet the daily power requirements.

The plant will produce 18 million units of power from the sun, the equivalent of the amount needed to power 10,000 homes for a year. On top of this, CIAL boasts the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3 lakh metric tonnes, which officials claim is equivalent to planting 3 million trees or not driving 750 miles.

Since the airport expects to produce more energy than it requires, CIAL plans to feed some of the energy into the state grid. According to the airport’s Facebook page, they are also looking to generate power through dam-based solar panels and low-head hydro projects using Kerala’s natural resources.

U.K. Police Target Schoolchildren as Young as 4 with Tax Payer Funded, Transgender Propaganda*

U.K. Police Target Schoolchildren as Young as 4 with Tax Payer Funded, Transgender Propaganda*

By Liam Deacon

Police and local government agencies in the United Kingdom are distributing a document for “empowering teachers to encourage and support” trans-genderism in schools at the “earliest stages” after a four-year-old child identified as transgender.

The “School Transgender Guidance” document has been distributed to all schools in the Cornwall area, and been named as “best practice” by the UK government’s Department of Education. It says trans-genderism can potentially be identified in those as young as two, and discusses powerful, irreversible and controversial treatments for prepubescent children.

The document claims: “The purpose of this guidance is to deeper ember good practice in the field of school [primary and secondary] and colleges,” and states that children as young as two years old can be identified as suffering from Gender Dysphonia.

The booklet instructs:

“Awareness of Trans issues can be embedding within the [personal, social, health and economic] curriculum from the beginning,” meaning that children as young a twelve should be taught transgender ideals and gender theory. It recommends that “resources” should be available from the “earliest stage.”

It recommends: “Trans issues are made more mainstream” in a “broad selection of topics” including “history projects.”

The document explains:

“A Transgender person feels that their external appearance (sex) does not match up with the way they feel internally about their gender identity,” for the benefit of teachers, and lists many different gender identities for the children to adopt, including “GenderQueer” and “Non-binary.”

The recommendations even extend to vaccinations, and the document states, “Consideration should be given to allowing the young Trans person to receive their vaccinations from their [doctor] if the vaccination is gender specific i.e. a F2M Trans pupil or student may find it very difficult to stand in a queue of girls awaiting a female specific vaccination.”

A similar document was launch in the county in 2013, about the same time that Brighton and Hove Council launch a “Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit.”

The UK is leading the way, and authorities in Canada launched similar guidelines in 2014, as did the U.S. Department of Education. New York State followed this year and just days ago similar guidelines sparked a huge controversy in Alaska.

The 2015 document was officially launched at a “Conference on Gender Identity” on the July 17th at Tavistock and Portman Clinic to “highlight the document and hold a few workshops with people from schools across Cornwall.”

The Clinic helps children as young as twelve to transition with tax payer money, and revealed in April that the number of children aged ten or under referred to the NHS “for issue with gender development” has more than quadrupled in the past five years.

The new document gives details of the Tavistock and Portman centre, where children can receive “gender re-assignment,” adding, “a person with Gender Dysphonia may require treatment (i.e. hormone blockers)” – an extreme and irreversible method of stunting the natural sexual development of prepubescent children.

As the document explains in its glossary:

“They block the body from releasing the hormones that change the body of boys and girls during puberty to either a more male or more female form and keep it at pre-puberty stage of development.”

Speaking exclusively to Breitbart London, Toby Best, Diversity Officer at Devon and Cornwall Police and co-editor of the document, said:

“It came as a collaboration of several organisations, where we had a young person, I think of the age of four, who identified as Trans, who was attending a school… [that] wanted some guidance around it, so the council… the Intercom Trust and the police got together.”

The Intercom Trust are a local transgender rights organisation which, according to Devon and Cornwall Police, have been going into local schools to spread their ideology directly to children.

Mr. Best said controversy surrounding hormone treatment for pre-pubescent children is “not a police or council issue.” He said: “We wouldn’t enter into a argument of whether it’s moral or immoral – whether it’s right – or get into that controversy.”

He said every child is different and the police’s job is to make sure all kids have access to equal treatment, security and protection.

The funding behind the document, Best said, was “via kind.” He said it was a good use of the 11-person strong “dedicate equalities and diversities department” at Devon and Cornwall Police. Adding: “It fits exactly what our roll is.”

Best added: “it’s a massive police issue,” because young transgendered people get bullied, can self-harm and become the victims of hate crime, he said.

“We want hate crime reporting to go through the roof.”

He conceded that bullying in school “is not a police matter,” but hate crime in the workplace is, he said, which he hopes to pre-empt.

Best was clear to stipulate that

“the document isn’t a statement of fact of policy for any organization… it is a guidance document,” and said, “every child is different.”

He explained that the council and police worked with “experts” from far-left transgender organisation such as a:gender, Transfiguration and the Gender Identity Clinic to produce it.

The booklet discusses name changes on exam papers, “alternative swimwear,” and school trips to the third world.

It dedicates a section to the “use of toilets and changing facilities in school,” so that transgendered students can be “seen and treated as a member of their true gender.”

It recommends transgendered students use disabled restrooms. The section omits to mention the concerns of non-transgendered students and their parents.

The document says: “transitioning by pupils is not a threat to [a] school’s single-sex status” and references Department of Education advice in relation the Equalities Act. The guide does not address pupils joining single-sex schools of the opposite gender to their birth, however.

The section on “sport and physical education” says “there should be reasonably few issues regarding participation within the sport of their true gender.”

It cautions, however, that “there may be physical advantage gained by [male to female] Trans participants,” specifically mentioning rugby. It stresses that risk should be “managed… rather than preventing young Trans people from participating.”

Many words are expended on the needs and concerns of transgendered students in sport; none, however, on the concerns and worries of the children competing against then, or their parents. Ultimately, a “common sense” approach is recommended in sport.

The ‘Useful Book List’ at the end of the report includes children’s titles as, “The Boy in the Dress,” as well as, “My Princess Boy,” and “The Sissy Duckling”. For teenagers, it pushes, “Freak Show,” and “Tutus Aren’t My Style”.

“It’s been distributed to all the schools in Cornwall, either in printed form or digitally… they’ve all been made aware of it,” said Best,

“It’s quite nice to see that some quite high profile schools in Cornwall have really embraced the document, got on board, and kind of added a bit of peer pressure I guess to other schools to use it.”

He told Breitbart London that the 2012 document, “has been adopted right throughout the country… [and] has also been included on the Department for Educations website, and held as best practice in some of their documents.”

World’s 400 Richest People lost $182 Billion This Week*

World’s 400 Richest People lost $182 Billion This Week*

The Higher you Climb the Harder the fall

By Brendan Coffey Devon Pendleton

The world’s 400 richest people lost $182 billion this week from their collective fortunes as weak manufacturing data from China and a rout in commodities sent global markets plunging.

The weekly drop for the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a group that includes Warren Buffett and Glencore Plc’s Ivan Glasenberg, was the biggest since tracking of the expanded list began in September 2014. The combined net worth of the index members fell by $76 billion on Friday alone, when the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index of U.S. stocks ended its worst week since 2011.

“For them that’s a fractional percentage, even though $182 billion is a big number,” said John Collins, director of investment advisory at Aspiriant, which oversees more than $8 billion for high net worth clients.

“A week like this feels really bad, but when you take a step back, in a big picture view it’s not a disaster by any means.”

Friday’s losses put the world’s richest 400 into the red for the year to date. They’re now down $74 billion in 2015, with a collective net worth of $3.98 trillion.

The week’s largest setback in dollar terms was experienced by Buffett, who saw his fortune drop by $3.6 billion as Berkshire Hathaway Inc. slipped more than 5%. The investor is the world’s third-wealthiest person, with a fortune of $63.4 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The slump in oil, which had its longest weekly losing streak since 1986 amid signs of an extended supply glut, contributed to $15.2 billion in losses for the world’s wealthiest energy billionaires. Continental Resources Inc. Chairman Harold Hamm saw $895 million, or 9% of his net worth, vanish this week.

Glencore’s Glasenberg

Glasenberg, chief executive officer of mining company Glencore Plc, lost $237 million during the week as commodity prices slid to their lowest levels in 13 years. Glencore reached a record low in London on Friday, down more than 8% from a week earlier, after the trading house reported its profit sank 56% in the first half of the year. Glasenberg’s fortune has decreased more than 40% in 2015, to $3.1 billion.

China’s 26 wealthiest people, pummeled by Hong Kong’s bear market and a weaker yen, lost $18.8 billion during the week. Wang Jianlin of Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties Co. was hit hardest, losing $3.5 billion.

Eleven billionaires added to their fortunes in spite of the market turmoil. The week’s biggest dollar gainer was Sun Pharmaceuticals’ Dilip Shanghvi. The world’s 39th-richest person became $467 million wealthier, elevating his net worth to $18.9 billion.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index takes measure of the world’s wealthiest people based on market and economic changes and Bloomberg News reporting. Each net-worth figure is updated every business day at 5:30 p.m. in New York and listed in U.S. dollars.

Djibouti orders the U.S. to Leave and for China to Step in*

The tiny African state of Djibouti has reportedly ordered the US to vacate its secondary Obock military base in the nation in a bid to turn over the installation to the Chinese military and its contingent of 10,000 troops, raising major concerns in Washington, which holds the largest military base in Djibouti, Camp Lemonnier.

“The announcement, made the day after US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Djibouti last May, is deeply worrying for Pax Americana, for it comes on top of a major package of economic investments by China that has Djiboutian President [Ismaïl Omar] Guelleh openly talking about the importance of his new friends from Asia,” US-based magazine CounterPunch wrote in an article on Monday.

According to the report, the US is about to lose one of its military bases in Djibouti, home to America’s largest permanent military installation in Africa that includes 4,000 troops and a fleet of US assassination drones that run bombing missions in regional Muslim countries as part of Washington’s official targeted killing program.

The Horn of Africa nation, strategically located in the critical entrance from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, lies at the gateway to the busy Suez Canal waterway and provides a port to neighboring landlocked Ethiopia.

The report further points out that the US Defense Department pays Djibouti nearly $63 million per year for the use of the Camp Lemonnier military base, which also serves as one of the world’s largest drone bases.

China, the report adds, has offered Djibouti a far more generous offer, namely the completion of a $3-billion railroad project from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to Djibouti.

“[Beijing] is also investing $400 million in modernizing Djibouti’s notoriously undersized port,” the CounterPunch article added.

According to the article and recent Western press reports, the Chinese military presence in Djibouti has introduced – among other possibilities – the prospect of US schemes to organize a ‘regime-change’ effort in the African nation under the pretext of democratic change.

UK-based Daily Telegraph highlighted the concerns of Pentagon officials regarding China’s deepening commercial involvement in Djibouti in a report last May, saying the development may prompt Washington “to relocate sensitive intelligence-gathering operations to more secure locations outside Djibouti where they are better protected from interception by the Chinese.”

US military installation Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti is the key base of Washington’s assassination drones.

The British daily further said that there are “fears” that President Guelleh may seek “to impose restrictions on the US military’s access to Camp Lemonnier, such as placing limits on the movement of military personnel and military operations conducted from the base.”

The daily also quoted a “senior US official” as saying that the “trade deal between Djibouti and China has raised serious security concerns with regard to Camp Lemonnier. There are fears that if President Guelleh gets too close to China then he may be tempted to impose restrictions on US access to the base, which would seriously affect the West’s attempts to collect intelligence on Islamic State (Daesh) and al-Qaeda.”

Pointing to a potential US scheme to plan a regime-change operation in Djibouti, the British daily added, “American diplomats are also resisting attempts by Mr Guelleh to stand for re-election next year, which they argue is unconstitutional. Mr Guelleh has been in power since 1999, and by law should stand down. If he does so then Washington hopes a more reasonable leader will be elected, one more aligned to the Pentagon’s interests.”

Moreover, in an April 23 article titled “China Comes to Djibouti,” US journal Foreign Affairs wrote that

Washington would need to band together with other allies such as France, Germany and Japan to try and counter China’s growing influence in Djibouti.”

“If it doesn’t, Washington might find that the country hosting its only military base in sub-Saharan Africa owes more favors to China, its rising global rival, than to the United States itself,” the magazine emphasized.

Senior Russian Lawmaker Seeks Ban on Windows 10 in State Agencies*

The State Duma’s vice speaker has asked the Russian government to ban the use of the Windows 10 OS among Russian civil servants over fears the American software may give access to classified information and Russian officials’ personal data.

In his letter to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, MP Nikolai Levichev of the center-left Fair Russia party said the service agreement signed by any Windows 10 users allows Microsoft to access all passwords, password prompts and other information used for data protection. The US corporation also receives other types of data, from users’ contacts, their emails and even location.

Microsoft warns that the received information will be stored and processed in the United States or any other country for an indefinite period of time and transferred to US state agencies.

Levichev has therefore asked Medvedev to consider a complete ban on the Windows 10 operating system in Russia’s bodies of state power, state-owned corporations, and state-sponsored scientific and research institutions. The MP has also sent a letter to the head of the Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor, Aleksander Zharov, asking whether Microsoft’s user service agreement contravenes Russian laws.

Senator Aleksander Volkov supported Levichev’s initiative in an interview with the Regnum news agency, adding that Russia needed its own protected software to replace Microsoft products.

Levichev’s letter echoes one sent to Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika by Communist Party MP Vadim Solovyov in August. Solovyov wrote that Russian laws stipulated the gathering and processing of personal information should only be conducted by companies included in the National Register of Personal Data Operators. Microsoft is not on that! The communist MP also feared use of the new OS in Russian state structures could end in leaks of classified information to foreign intelligence services. The Prosecutor General’s Office is yet to reply to the MP’s concerns.

Microsoft’s press service replied saying transfer of personal information is only possible with the user’s consent, and that it gave users access to a comprehensive suite of privacy settings.

In mid-2014, the Russian parliament passed a law obliging all internet companies to store the personal information of Russian citizens inside the country. In order to give foreign and domestic internet companies enough time to create data-storage facilities in Russia, the act won’t come into force until September 2016 at the earliest.
