Investors Demand that McDonald’s Ban Antibiotics in its Meat*

Investors Demand that McDonald’s Ban Antibiotics in its Meat*

Because they are losing money….

By Julie Fidler

Just days after McDonald’s corporation said it will shift to using cage-free eggs over the next decade; investors have started pressuring the fast-food chain to remove antibiotics from all of its meat.

A shareholder proposal was filed by the Congregation of Benedictine Sisters in Boerne, Texas, asking McDonald’s to ban all of its meat suppliers from using antibiotics on animals to make them grow, and to prevent disease. The meat suppliers would still be permitted to use antibiotics on sick animals, however.

In March, McDonald’s vowed to reduce the amount of drugs used in its chickens, but did not extend the change to pork and beef products. The Sisters say this is a double-standard.

“We question why this important commitment isn’t also being applied to the beef and pork they source, as hamburgers are a mainstay of McDonald’s business. This double-standard makes no sense to us,” said Sr. Susan Mika of the Congregation of the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne.

The congregation won’t be alone in its demands; a number of other McDonald’s shareholders are planning to file similar proposals, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility says. The group is leading a campaign against the corporation’s use of antibiotics on animals.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the use of antibiotics in meat could lead to antibiotic resistance in humans, and the rise of “superbugs.”

About 2 million Americans are sickened by drug-resistant infections every year, according to the agency.

On September 9, McDonald’s announced that it would start using cage-free chickens within 10 years in nearly 16,000 of its restaurants. Each year, the fast-food giant purchases about 2 billion eggs to make its Egg McMuffins and other breakfast foods. The company claims it has been buying more than 13 million cage-free eggs per year since 2011.

“You have some of these facilities that have tens of millions of animals on one property, tens of millions, they are locked so overcrowded, crammed wing to wing, and beak to beak and stacked in cages from the floor to the ceiling, this is where the term factory farm comes from,” says Paul Shapiro of the Humane Society of the United States.

Shapiro noted that:

“Even cage-free birds may never go outside and they are still in a facility with tens of thousands of birds…It doesn’t necessarily mean they are living in bucolic conditions but it does mean that the birds have a better quality of life.”

Marion Gross, Chief Supply Chain Officer of McDonald’s North America, says it would be feasible for McDonald’s to start using free-range chickens, but it would be incredibly difficult, due to the sheer number of eggs the chain purchases every year. That doesn’t mean that McDonald’s couldn’t improve conditions at cage-free farms, however.

“We believe that we are going to help move [the improvements in cage-free systems] along even further because our volumes and our scale is so big we are helping to change the industry,” Gross said.

“But those changes will come at a cost to farmers, many of them plan for 20 years of egg production out of the thousands of cages they use.”

McDonald’s says the transition to cage-free chickens is a step in the right direction, and that it is always taking steps to provide consumers with healthier menu options, including the Artisan Grilled Chicken patty, which features “simple, everyday ingredients,” and is topped with a blend of romaine, baby spinach and baby kale, the company said in a press release.

It added:

“McDonald’s is also moving from liquid margarine to real butter on English muffins, biscuits and bagels on the breakfast menu and has introduced a new Buttermilk Crispy Chicken, which uses real buttermilk in the breading.”

But let’s face it, McDonald’s is not exactly a role model for having food free of low quality, health-hazardous ingredients.

Just a few days ago, McDonald’s received a “C” grade from a coalition of environmental, animal welfare, and consumer organizations who rated the corporation’s antibiotic policies.

Corbyn Turns PMQs into the People’s Question Time, and Cameron Flounders*

Corbyn Turns PMQs into the People’s Question Time, and Cameron Flounders*

There was a tense atmosphere on Conservative benches today as David Cameron faced his first challenge at Prime Minister’s Question Time by Labour’s newly-elected leader Jeremy Corbyn – and the results were astonishing.

To those new to PMQs, this is a weekly 30 minute session where the Opposition Leader and MPs get to grill the PM on anything they like. You can learn more about it here.

Anyone who has any doubt as to the success of Corbyn’s approach today needs to rewatch BBC2’s Daily Politics. The entire thrust of the show prior to PMQs was predicated on failure. The first days of Corbyn’s leadership were defined, the pundits pronounced, by disarray and in-fighting. The White Poppy, the refusal to sing God Save The Queen, the Parliamentary Labour Party’s reluctance to support their new leader. All this was going to come over in glorious technicolor during this first PMQs, they said.

A quiet, suited Corbyn began his questions with an acknowledgement of those who elected him leader, and claimed that while he was touring the country, speaking to people in villages, towns and cities across the land, he was asked most often to change the tone of PMQs, to make it less “triumphalist”.

This is significant because Cameron’s promises of “an end to Punch and Judy politics” back in 2005 came to nothing – and the PM is known for losing his temper and becoming personal and unprofessional at the despatch box. You will recall his infamously sexist response to Labour’s Angela Eagle in 2011, when he told the then Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury to ‘Calm down, dear’.

While Cameron did well to embrace the offer, he very soon began to appear uncomfortable as Corbyn hit him repeatedly with quiet, forensic questions that came direct from the public. The Labour Leader decided to crowd source his PMQs, inviting the public to send him the questions to which they most want answers. He received over 40,000.

Corbyn followed a simple formula. He explained how many people emailed him about an issue, he picked one of the questions on that issue, and he launched it at the PM. His first question shows just how effective this approach might be in coming months.

“Two and a half thousand people emailed me on the housing crisis in this country, and I ask one from a woman called Marie, who says:

‘What does the government intend to do about the chronic lack of affordable housing and the extortionate rents charged by some private sector landlords in this country?’”

Cameron responded:

“We do need to see more affordable housing in our country. We delivered 260,000 affordable housing units in the last parliament. We built more council houses in our country than the previous 13 years had been managed. But I recognise much more needs to be done.”

Cameron’s statement here is full of holes, in fact, outright lies.

By forcing Cameron onto the ground of facts, and defending his record in numbers, Corbyn opens the Prime Minister up to a greater degree of probity than he normally endures.

After PMQs, a clearly startled and stunned BBCDP team were without negative comment. Andrew Neil immediately followed the scent of Corbyn’s attack, laying into Tory MP Ed Vaizey over housing. Vaizey stared meekly at Neill, unable to defend the record.

“How many did you build in 2013/4?” Neil asks.

To which Vaizey responds with the wrong answer, and the exchange continues as below.

Neil: “134,000. It’s 100,000 short of what we require. How many have you built in the financial year that ended this April?”

Vaizey: “127,000”

Neil: “You built 137,000, which is 3,000 more than the previous year. So in other words, it’s static. There is no housing boom. In this country, for the second year running, you were 100,000 behind what we need. This housing crisis can only get worse.”

Co-host Jo Coburn was wide-eyed with excitement as she rolled back into the studio following the questions. Asked how it felt, she replied:

“Extraordinary, actually. I literally got the last seat in the House.

I have never seen the chamber so packed, to the rafters. On the public gallery side, on the press gallery side, and most definitely within the chamber itself.

It was also completely different to any other PMQs I’ve watched in the sense that there was so much anticipation.

I could only see the Tory MPs from where my seat was and they looked a little nervous, a little bit ‘I don;t know whats coming here.’

Even George Osborne and David Cameron looked a little bit apprehensive.”

Corbyn used his six questions to cover the housing crisis, mental health, tax credits and the issues most important to the public – and it worked. But if any exchange proved Cameron’s discomfort it came between the PM and SNP MP Angus Robertson. When Robertson challenged the PM on his failure to deliver the promised Home Rule to Scotland, a year to the day after promising to do so, the PM became visibly flustered. Mr Cameron rushed his reply, finishing by sniping at Robertson:

“Are you, when it comes to talking about the issues, Frit?!” (the Scottish colloquial term for frightened)

There was roaring from the Conservative benches before a quiet Robertson took to his feet again, looked coolly at the PM and replied:

“Very interesting. What happened to the new style of PMQs from the Prime Minister?”

Just 15 minutes after making his promise, Cameron had already forgotten it, and broken it – neatly summing up his entire Prime Minister-ship.

Corbyn will need to find a way of including a comeback to Cameron’s answers – the PM should not be allowed to leave these factually inaccurate responses dangling in the air. It is also clear that Corbyn is facing opponents infront and behind him at PMQs – but that shouldn’t come as news to anybody.

However, what this approach ensures is that those of us in the progressive media, who bear the responsibility to act as the Fourth Estate (in the absence of much of the mainstream press), are then able to hoist Cameron on his own petard, week after week. Corbyn is, in essence, forcing Cameron to lose ground publicly at PMQs by telling the truth, or lose ground publicly after PMQs by telling lies that can be unpicked after the fact. Better yet, he’s using your questions to do it.

Politics just got interesting again.

U.S. House Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood in Wake of Baby Parts Scandal*

U.S. House Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood in Wake of Baby Parts Scandal*

By Dustin Siggins

The U.S. House of Representatives voted today to defund Planned Parenthood while legislators continue their investigation of allegations that the abortion giant is profiting from the sale of foetal body parts.

The bill would take the $235 million of savings and invest it into Federally Qualified Health Centers.

With three Republicans and two Democrats crossing the aisle, the final vote for H.R. 3134, the “Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015,” was 241-187. The bill would defund Planned Parenthood while Congress investigates whether it has violated federal foetal harvesting laws, as well as partial-birth abortion and abortion modification laws.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-TN, said in a statement that the vote was “about continuing the process to protect our most vulnerable.”

The bill was one of two pro-life bills passed by the House today. The other was H.R. 3504, the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” which makes killing a baby born due to a botched abortion first-degree murder.

Neither bill is expected to pass the Senate, which has garnered frustration among many pro-life leaders. The defund vote in particular has been criticized by many pro-life groups and nearly 30 pro-life Republicans who want the bill to be attached to the federal budget that is expected to come to a vote later this month.

GOP leaders are concerned that Democrats may shut down the federal government to protect Planned Parenthood’s federal funding. A similar tactic in 2013 led to enormous media and political criticism of the GOP that was reflected in public polling; however, the GOP managed to take the Senate 13 months later.

Americans United for Life President Charmaine Yoest, Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Casey Mattox, and pro-abortion attorney Judy Waxman testify before Congress on September 17, 2015.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-KS, tied today’s votes to President Obama’s veto threat, which could endanger the ability of the U.S. government to stay open if Republicans attach a defunding measure to a budget bill.

It is the height of political extremism, not to mention unethical, to hold the entire government hostage to one special interest, especially one that is engaged in the wholesale slaughter of unborn babies and the sale of their organs to the highest bidder,” said Huelskamp.

The defund measure was introduced by Rep. Diane Black, R-TN, who said on the House floor today that

“this legislation enacts a one year moratorium on all federal money to Planned Parenthood. It does not reduce women’s health funding by a single dime. Instead, this legislation reallocates funding to the more than 13,500 facilities nationwide that provide true preventive care to those who need it most and do not perform abortions.”

Additionally, said Black,

“Planned Parenthood can get the money back if they fully commit to women’s healthcare and stop performing abortions.”

As I Began to Love Myself…*

As I Began to Love Myself…*

Occupy Your Heart by Ian MacKenzieBy Charlie Chaplin

As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering
are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth.
Today, I know, this is “Authenticity”.

As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody
As I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time
was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me.
Today I call it “Respect”.

As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life,
and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow.
Today I call it “Maturity”.

As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance,
I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment.
So I could be calm.
Today I call it “Self-Confidence”.

As I began to love myself I quit steeling my own time,
and I stopped designing huge projects for the future.
Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm.
Today I call it “Simplicity”.

As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for
my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself.
At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism.
Today I know it is “Love of Oneself”.

As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time.
Today I discovered that is “Modesty”.

As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worry about the future.
Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening.
Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it “Fulfillment”.

As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me
and it can make me sick.
But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally.
Today I call this connection “Wisdom of the Heart”.

We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born.

Today I know that is “Life”!

Historic Ruling in Brazil Bans Business from Funding Campaigns*

Historic Ruling in Brazil Bans Business from Funding Campaigns*

Here are a few countries that need to do this instead of maintain the farce that a citizen’s vote counts…

The ban seeks to limit economic power that turns “the voter into a puppet, eroding citizenship and democracy,” according to a federal judge.

The Supreme Court in Brazil ruled Thursday in favour of banning businesses from financing electoral campaigns and political parties amid a major corruption scandal that alleges corporations used this mechanism to obtain lucrative contracts with the state-owned oil company Petrobras.

The Court voted 8-3 in favour of the ruling, which aims to limit the influence of big corporations in politics.

“The influence of economic power culminates when it converts the electoral process into a political game of cards already marked, an odious pantomime that transforms the voter into a puppet, eroding citizenship and democracy with a single blow,” Judge Rosa Weber said.

The ruling represents a groundbreaking change in the Brazilian political landscape as businesses contributed over 90% of the total financing of political candidates in the last presidential elections.

The ban now contradicts a bill passed by Congress last week, which in fact allows corporate financing. President Dilma Roussef might veto the bill, but if this is cancelled by Congress, the legislation could turn to the Supreme Court.

The association of lawyers of Brazil presented the case to the Supreme Court in 2013, but it was blocked by a conservative judge until now. The move comes amid a huge corruption scandal alleging that construction and engineering firms paid corrupt officials in order to get lucrative contracts with Petrobras, one of the largest oil companies in the world. The bribes amounted to at least US$800 million paid to individuals – but the company has not been able to say exactly how much money it has lost from these transactions.

Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea Spreads in Northern England*

Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea Spreads in Northern England*

One of the most widespread sexually transmitted infections has become invincible to traditional treatments.

British sexual health doctors are reporting an outbreak of a highly drug-resistant gonorrhea strain first registered in Leeds in northern England.

The disease caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium is virulent in all kinds of unprotected sex.

Normally, it is cured with a combination of antibiotics azithromycin and ceftriaxone, but the new strain easily overcomes the treatment.

Since March, there have already been 12 cases of mutated gonorrhea registered, all in heterosexuals, in Leeds and four more in Cheshire’s Macclesfield, Greater Manchester’s Oldham and North Lincolnshire’s Scunthorpe.

“It doesn’t sound like an awful lot of people, but the implication is there’s a lot more of this strain out there and we need to stamp it out as quickly as possible,” a consultant in sexual health based in Bristol, Peter Greenhouse, told the BBC News website.

A similar case of complete resistance to ceftriaxone antibiotics was reported in 2011 in Japan, the BBC reports.

Greenhouse explained that should the new strain becomes predominant in the U.K., Brits are “in big trouble” and meticulous effort would be needed to have all the infected people “traced and treated.”

More undiagnosed cases are likely to be on the way as the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV has reported that those people with the disease have had sexual partners from across the U.K.

There is the possibility that we’ve got a very resistant strain of gonorrhea,” the association’s president, Dr Jan Clarke, told the BBC.

“An outbreak control team meeting has been convened and STBRU are currently performing next generation sequencing on these strains to better understand the molecular epidemiology,” the association said.

Last year, nearly 35,000 cases of ‘ordinary’ gonorrhea were reported in England, a 19% growth on 2013 figures, making it is the second most widespread sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the U.K., with the first position yielded to chlamydia.

Primarily, the disease affects young people under 25.

The major problem with gonorrhea is that about 10% of men and practically 50% of women do not experience symptoms of the disease – until the infection takes over.

When symptoms become evident, they take the form of green or yellow purulent discharge from genitals, painful urinating and bleeding in between periods for women.

Improperly treated infection could end up in infertility or could be passed to a newborn.

A statement issued by Dr Mike Gent from Public Health England maintains that although alternative kinds of antibiotics are currently being tried to cure the new gonorrhea strain, “the resistance to first-line treatment remains a concern,” as the Leeds outbreak might signal the rise of untreatable forms of gonorrhea.

To curb the spread of the new disease, Dr Gent urged the public to practice safe sex and use condoms.

Russia Constructs first Foreign Camp in Syria for Internally Displaced*

The first tent camp for internal refugees, constructed by Russian engineers, has been opened in western Syria, in a location safe from the raging civil war. Over the last four years more than 50% of the Syrian population has been displaced.

The camp site is situated on a racetrack, practically in the downtown of the city of Hama (Hamah), some 40km from the nearest warzone. This site is considered to be relatively safe in a country suffering from active military operations since February 2011.

The camp for 500 refugees consists of 25 army tents fully equipped for living, a field kitchen, a canteen, showers, two mobile power generators and a water-storage facility. The dwelling tents are equipped with beds and heating furnaces for cold weather.

In case the number of refugees increases sharply, the camp is ready to accommodate up to 1,000 people.

Everything needed to set up a camp was delivered to Latakia Airport on September 12 by an Antonov An-124 Ruslan jet. The flight also brought 50,000 sets of disposable tableware and 15 tons of provisions enough to feed 50 people for 30 days.

Hama province’s Governor Ghassan Khalaf and religious clerics have come to open the camp.

“We appreciate Russia’s help in delivering all the necessary equipment and setting up a camp. With the given situation, Syria is in great need for camps like this to accommodate displaced citizens leaving provinces with active warfare ongoing,” Khalaf told RIA Novosti.

Syrian volunteers are already assisting the refugees at the new camp.

“I learnt how to operate a Russian field kitchen really quickly and have already cooked some Russian cereal. The camp’s kitchen is capable of cooking food for 200 people at a time.

“When we run out of food stock, our organization will continue supplying provisions and assist the refugees,” Red Crescent Society volunteer Anan Musri told Vesti.

Some 30 flights from Russia have landed at Latakia Airport over the course of the last two years. The last two aircrafts that arrived on September 12 brought to Syria about 80 tons of humanitarian help.

Active fighting is ongoing in neighboring Idlib and Aleppo provinces, and people escaping from the militants into the area controlled by the Syrian government are being accommodated in Hama’s schools. As the academic year is set to begin soon, people must be relocated to enable pupils to attend lessons.

According to Amnesty International, four years of warfare in Syria have displaced half of the Syrian population. About 4 million Syrians have escaped abroad, to neighboring Turkey (1.9 million), Lebanon (1.2 million), Jordan (650,000), Iraq (250,000) and Egypt (more than 130,000).

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) claims there are 6.5 million people internally displaced within Syria.

U.S. Central Command Commander Gen. Lloyd Austin III testifies on Capitol Hill, Sept. 16, 2015

The chief of the U.S. military campaign in Iraq and Syria has acknowledged that the $500 million Pentagon program to “train and equip” militants in Syria has so far yielded only “four or five” fighters.

The remarks by Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, head of U.S. Central Command, before a Senate panel on Wednesday set off a wave of criticism from congressional lawmakers, who are wary of the Obama administration’s strategy towards the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

“The New Syrian Force program has gotten off to a slow start,” Gen. Austin told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

With the program now in disarray, Pentagon officials are scrambling to revamp the strategy, The New York Times reported last week.

Military leaders are drawing up plans to put larger numbers of newly-trained militants in safer zones as well as providing them with more intelligence on the Daesh terrorists.

The training program is run by U.S. Special Forces in Turkey and Jordan, and is separate from a similar covert program by the CIA [aka the military].

“The Pentagon initially said that it intended to train and arm about 5,400 militants a year as a proxy ground force against Daesh in Syria.”

“We’re counting on our fingers and toes at this point, when we’d envisioned 5,400 [fighters] by the end of the year,” Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri, said at the hearing.

Administration officials have said that more than 100 militants are currently being trained, a figure still far from the original goal [if true].

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. John McCain, left, questions Gen. Austin on Wednesday

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. John McCain, left, questions Gen. Austin on Wednesday

Critics say U.S. -allied militants could turn their training and weapons against the Syrian government rather than Daesh because they see the terrorists as fighting a parallel war.

Gen. Austin told the senators that the training program was always meant to be a “complement” to the airstrike campaign the U.S. is leading in Syria.

“We continue to make progress across the battle-space in Iraq and Syria,” he claimed.

Committee Chairman Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, dismissed the testimony, saying he had never heard statements so “divorced from reality” in his 30 years on the panel.

McCain asked Gen. Austin if he would support a no-fly zone to ground the Syrian air force.

“I would not recommend that at this point,” the general responded.

The senator also raised the idea of a buffer zone, but Austin said he “would not recommend a buffer zone at this point.”

“The response prompted a sarcastic jab from McCain. “Basically, general, what you’re telling us is everything’s fine.”
