Britain’s Hunger Crisis Sparks First Student-Led Food Bank*

Britain’s Hunger Crisis Sparks First Student-Led Food Bank*

By Gabrielle Pickard-Whitehead

Nestled in the Manchester Universities’ Catholic Chaplaincy off Oxford Road is Manchester Central Foodbank, the U.K.’s first student-led food bank. In 2015, this welcoming café-like sanctuary has offered warmth, a listening ear – and most importantly, it has handed out more than 2,700 food parcels to people of differing backgrounds and ages who are all part of the hunger crisis that is reshaping Britain.

The number of people relying on emergency food aid at food banks is on the rise in the U.K., as recent figures released by the Trussell Trust – which overseas more than 400 food banks nationwide – found a 19% spike over the last year. But the rise didn’t happen in a vacuum. According to a British Media Journal report, “Austerity, Sanctions and the Rise of Foodbanks in the U.K.,”, the growth in food banks has been a direct result of the Conservative government’s austerity regime.

A recent survey of 522 general practitioners in Britain found that 16% had been asked for food bank referrals by patients. According to the report, while soup kitchens have long been in operation in Britain, the “rapid rise of food banks is a new phenomenon” and one that raises concerns from the U.K.’s Faculty of Public Health that the “welfare system is increasingly failing to provide a robust last line of defence against hunger.”

The report cited claims by U.K. food charities, which say they’re now providing emergency food aid “in response to economic hardship and food insecurity.”

Benefits Sanctions

A specific austerity measure enforced by the Conservative government, which is repeatedly mentioned in discussions about the U.K.’s food emergency, is benefits sanctions. Chancellor George Osborne’s plan to eliminate the U.K. deficit by 2019 includes cutting £12 billion from the welfare budget. This includes job centres throughout the country being permitted to penalize individuals in receipt of benefits by having their payments stopped – an act known as benefit sanctions.

The reasons for the sanctions vary, ranging from a claimant being late for a meeting with the job centre, to voluntarily leaving several jobs. The impact of the sanctions are equally diverse; in the most extreme case, a person can lose his or her benefits for three years. Delays in claimants receiving their benefits has also been pinned on desperate people resorting to desperate measures simply in order to eat.

One example is 28-year-old Shauna Gaunlett, from Dundee, Scotland, who was forced to ask a local food bank for food when benefit officials stopped her jobseekers payments. Gaunlett was waiting to start a new job as a care assistant, but the routine checks required to begin the job took nine weeks to arrange. During that time, job centre officials assumed Shauna had stopped looking for work, and stopped her payments. Penniless for weeks, Shauna had to rely on food banks to feed herself.

Further evidence that increasing food bank reliance is directly related to the U.K. government’s welfare reforms can be found in the “Food Bank Provision Welfare Reform in the U.K.” report produced by the University of Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI). The report, based on a three-year study of the growth of nationally coordinated or facilitated emergency food provision in the U.K., sought to develop an understanding of the “evolving boundaries of responsibility for welfare provision between state and civil society.”

The SPERI research indicates that austerity and harsh welfare reforms – namely changes to benefit entitlements and inadequate processes within benefit systems – are a central factor driving the rising demand for food banks across the U.K.

Manchester Central Food bank

To shed further light on Britain’s growing food poverty and emergency food aid provision, I spoke to members of Manchester Central Food bank, a Christian charity affiliated with the Trussell Trust. Started by students in 2013, the food bank takes a holistic approach to food handouts, and acts as a “stepping stone” by referring individuals to other organizations that can offer them additional support.

The clients attending the centre have themselves been referred there by care professionals such as health workers, doctors, police and the Citizen Advice Bureau. The charity works with 160 referral agencies, including housing associations, toddler groups, free debt advice groups, schools and English language teaching centres, all of which are dedicated to helping people in crisis get back on their feet.

The volunteers I spoke with told moving stories of the clients they’ve helped, and explained that many came to the centre amid the recent “drift” of desperate individuals who’ve been forced to seek food after changes to their welfare benefits. Fr. Tim Byron, Chaplain at the Manchester Universities’ Catholic Chaplaincy and head of the food bank’s chair of trustees, is convinced the current spike of visitors is being driven by the changes the government is making to the benefits system.

“The draconian approach to rolling back the welfare state is too much too soon for some who are finding themselves unable to cope,” Fr Bryon told me.

But William Howe and Dan O’Brien, both volunteers at Manchester Central Food bank, explained that the goods the centre provides extends beyond just supplying food. For example, to help clients overcome potential difficulties of having their benefits stopped due to communication failure with the job centre, the food bank gives out £10 mobile phone SIM cards ensuring clients have adequate credit to make calls to the centre. Toiletries are also provided to the centre by a leading cosmetic firm, helping clients stay on top of personal hygiene – something particularly important when attending job interviews.

“People’s situations and needs are always different and, to be honest, we’re only ever a few wage packets away from being in crisis,” said Howe.

Manchester Central Foodbank, while the first of its kind due to student support, is just one of many food centres scattered throughout the U.K. providing aid and support to those battling high living costs, insecure work, austerity cuts and benefit sanctions. But experts warn that despite a perceived wider economic recovery in the U.K., the dramatic year-on-year rise in food bank dependence is just the tip of the iceberg in Britain’s growing hunger crisis.

Solzhenitsyn on Western Decadence and Its Remedy*

Solzhenitsyn on Western Decadence and Its Remedy*

By Jonas E. Alexis

In the summer of 1978, Alexander Solzhenitsyn delivered a stunning lecture at Harvard University, during which he declared that the West was on the path of decadence. First, Solzhenitsyn posited the undeniable fact: “truth seldom is sweet; it is invariably bitter.”

He then proceeded to say that

“A decline in courage may be the most striking feature that an outside observer notices in the West today…Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elites, causing an impression of a loss of courage by the entire society.”

This decline in courage progressively led to “a lack of manhood,” and a lack of manhood bred cowardice.

“Thus mediocrity triumphs under the guise of democratic restraints.” Solzhenitsyn moved on to drop the moral and political bomb:

“Society has turned out to have scarce defences against the abyss of human decadence, for example against the misuse of liberty for moral violence against young people, such as motion pictures full of pornography, crime, and horror.

“This is all considered to be part of freedom and to be counterbalanced, in theory, by the young people’s right not to look and not to accept. Life organized legalistically has thus shown its inability to defend itself against the corrosion of evil.

“And what shall we say about the dark realms of overt criminality? Legal limits (especially in the United States) are broad enough to encourage not only individual freedom but also some misuse of such freedom.

“The culprit can go unpunished or obtain undeserved leniency — all with the support of thousands of defenders in the society. When a government earnestly undertakes to root out terrorism, public opinion immediately accuses it of violating the terrorist’s civil rights. There is quite a number of such cases.

“The press, too, of course, enjoys the widest freedom. (I shall be using the word “press” to include all the media.) But what use does it make of it?

“Here again, the overriding concern is not to infringe the letter of the law. There is no true moral responsibility for distortion or disproportion. What sort of responsibility does a journalist or a newspaper have to the readership or to history? If they have misled public opinion by inaccurate information or wrong conclusions, even if they have contributed to mistakes on a state level, do we know of any case of open regret voiced by the same journalist or the same newspaper?

“No; this would damage sales. A nation may be the worse for such a mistake, but the journalist always gets away with it. It is most likely that he will start writing the exact opposite to his previous statements with renewed aplomb.”

Solzhenitsyn called this kind of decadence “the psychic diseases of the twentieth century and more than anywhere else this is manifested in the press. In-depth analysis of a problem is anathema to the press; it is contrary to its nature.”

The Press, Solzhenitsyn continued to say, “has become the greatest power within Western countries, exceeding that of the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. Yet one would like to ask: According to what law has it been elected and to whom is it responsible? In the Communist East, a journalist is frankly appointed as a state official. But who has voted Western journalists into their positions of power, for how long a time, and with what prerogatives?”

Well, we have enough information today to answer Solzhenitsyn’s puzzling question. Jewish scholar Benjamin Ginsberg of Johns Hopkins tells us that “Western journalists” have fallen into the able hands of the Dreadful Few, who now control much of the media and who give serious journalism and free speech no chance.

In a similar vein, Jewish historian Yuri Slezkine makes sure that readers get the thesis of his book (The Jewish Century) correctly by positing on the very first page that “The Modern Age is the Jewish Age” and “the twentieth century, in particular, is the Jewish Century.” Slezkine adds:

Modernization, in other words, is about everyone becoming Jewish.”

If you doubt this, then pick up some of the recent articles in the New York Times and you will see how NWO agents and Satan worshipers pay some Goyim to say some of the most disgusting things about the Middle East and Russia. Here is the funny thing. Just three days ago, NWO agents and Satan worshipers in the U.S. and Europe warned Putin of civilian casualties in Syria. But those jokers have recently dropped bombs at a hospital in Afghanistan.

“Early this morning, in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the U.S. dropped bombs on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)). The airstrike killed at least nine of the hospital’s medical staff, and seriously injured dozens of patients. ‘Among the dead was the Afghan head of the hospital, Abdul Sattar,’ reported the New York Times.”

There is more. You remember how NWO agents and Satan worshipers blasted Putin for his alleged persecution of homosexuals in Russia? Well, one of America’s greatest allies, Saudi Arabia, “literally hands down death sentences for homosexuality.” There are other things about Saudi Arabia that you probably did not know:

Where are those NWO agents who promiscuously ridiculed Putin? Will they ever say a word about all of this? The answer to those questions should not be a surprise to VT readers here.

Solzhenitsyn said,

“Your scholars are free in the legal sense, but they are hemmed in by the idols of the prevailing fad…

“In America, I have received letters from highly intelligent persons — maybe a teacher in a faraway small college who could do much for the renewal and salvation of his country, but the country cannot hear him because the media will not provide him with a forum. This gives birth to strong mass prejudices, to a blindness which is perilous in our dynamic era.”

My good friend, Dr. Fredrick Toben, who has been mercilessly and relentlessly persecuted virtually around the world, said something similar a few years ago: “The only freedom we have in the west is the freedom to go shopping.”

As an alternative to Western decadence and corruption, Solzhenitsyn appealed to “a spiritual blaze,” which ought to give “rise to a new height of vision, to a new level of life,” where existence has eternal values and where our “spiritual being will not be trampled upon, as in the Modern Era. The ascension is similar to climbing onto the next anthropological stage. No one on earth has any other way left but — upward.”

Elsewhere, Solzhenitsyn put the issue into proper perspective by bringing in the moral dimension:

“The goal of human evolution is not freedom for the sake of freedom. Nor is it the building of an ideal polity. What matter, of course, are the moral foundations of society.”

In other words, if morality does not exist, then people become subjects or instruments or machines which can be programmed or reprogrammed. If morality is out, then we are back to Enlightenment and materialistic ideology, which states that man, in the words of La Mettrie himself, is just a machine.

By appealing to morality, Solzhenitsyn is refuting and repudiating the ideology that NWO agents and Satan worshipers have been propounded for years. Watch their language very carefully and you will often hear words like “democracy,” “freedom,” “universal rights,” “fairness,” blah, blah, blah.

Yet underneath those intoxicated words are blood, the killing of innocent civilians at hospitals, demonizing countries they do not like, allying with terrorism, etc. In describing degenerate moderns, E. Michael Jones writes,

The modern intellectual is, for the most part, a lecher and a fool. His theories are propounded for everyone but himself. So Rousseau, the writer of Emile, the first modern book on child rearing sent all five of his illegitimate children to the orphanage shortly after they were born, which, given the condition of orphanages in the 18th century, meant to their deaths.

“Marx, the champion of the proletariat, knew only one proletarian in his life, his maid, Lenchen, to whom he paid not one single penny in wages. In addition to this economic exploitation, there was also the sexual exploitation. Marx fathered an illegitimate child by her and refused to acknowledge it.”

Jones moves on to make this powerful point:

“The intellectual life is a function of the moral life of the thinker. In order to apprehend truth, which is the goal of the intellectual life, one must live a moral life. One can produce intellectual product, but to the extent that one prescinds from living the moral life, that product will be more a function of internal desire—wish fulfillment, if you will—than external reality…In the intellectual life, one either conforms desire to truth or truth to desire.

This is certainly an apt description of what NWO agents and Satan worshipers are really like. Instead of submitting their corrupt lives to the truth and allowing the truth to transform them for good, they deliberately take the truth and twist it for their own ideological purposes.

So, when they say that they are fighting terrorism in places like Syria, you know that they are doing the opposite. If you doubt this, then take a look at what the Syrian rebels/terrorists have recently said:

“Syrian insurgent groups including the powerful Islamist faction Ahrar al-Sham have called on regional states to forge an alliance against Russia and Iran in Syria…”

It looks like they are getting their butts kicked by Putin and Russia.

Brzezinski to Putin: Stop hitting OUR al-Qaeda or it’s World War III*

Former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski’s assertion that Washington should retaliate against Moscow for Russian airstrikes against U.S. assets in Syria is a “stunning admission” of the role America has played in the Syrian crisis, an American scholar in Wisconsin says.

Dr. Kevin Barrett, a founding member of the Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday while commenting on Brzezinski’s latest article about Russia in the Financial Times.

3fcd8-zbigniew_brezinski-between_two_ages_americas_role_in_the_technotronic_era_1970Brzezinski advised President Barack Obama to attempt to disarm the Russians if they keep attacking the CIA-trained militants in Syria.

“The Russian naval and air presences in Syria are vulnerable, isolated geographically from their homeland,” Brzezinski wrote on Sunday. “They could be ‘disarmed’ if they persist in provoking the US.”

Dr. Barrett said that it is “a stunning admission from a senior high-level policy advisor here in the U.S. that the U.S. in fact using al-Qaeda, or perhaps the Islamic State [the Daesh/ISIL terrorist group] as well, as assets.”

“This is not something that is normally admitted by officials from Washington, DC, that is that al-Qaeda in Syria, the al-Nusra Front, is actually a US ally,” he added.

Brzezinski wrote that Moscow’s apparent decision to strike CIA’s militants “at best” reflects “Russian military incompetence,” and worst, “evidence of a dangerous desire to highlight American political impotence.” He added that if Moscow continues to target these people, then Washington should retaliate against Russians.

Commenting to Press TV, Dr. Barrett said that

“the American people will be very interested to hear that just 14 years after the attacks of September 11th, 2001, which were officially blamed on al-Qaeda – which even then was called by some people al-CIA-duh, having had relationships with the U.S. in the Afghan jihad against the Soviet Union – that this supposedly demonized enemy group that we were told was responsible for killing 3,000 Americans on September 11th, 2001 is now our ally in Syria, and we should to go war with Russia and risk a nuclear war that could end life on the planet in order to punish Russia for fighting against al-Qaeda.”

“It’s kind of mind-boggling that anyone could even imagine the U.S. retaliating  against Russia for Russia’s attacks on al-Qaeda, but that’s precisely what Brzezinski said,” he stated.

“And Brzezinski, for better or worse, is actually considered one of the more sensible and level-headed people in Washington, DC which tells you something about other people around him, the neoconservatives who are much crazier than even he is,” said Dr. Barrett, the author of Questioning the War on Terror.

“I guess to explain this, we have just to note Brzezinski’s background; he is from a Polish nobility kind of family background which explains why he hates Russia so much, and has been trying to push aggressive policies against Russia throughout his whole life,” he pointed out.

“But it’s still stunning and disgraceful that when Russia has intervened at the behest of the Syrian government, which is fully legitimate under international law, to shore up that government against these [terrorist] groups like al-Nusra and the Islamic State in order to try to stabilize the situation and lay the groundwork for a kind of peaceful solution, that the response from Brzezinski would be that we need to attack Russia,” Dr. Barrett observed.

Over 1,000 Terrorists Surrender to Syrian Army in Last 24 Hours*

The development came after President Bashar al-Assad in a televised address in July pardoned all soldiers who have fled the army, saying that his words served as a general decree to relevant officials.

Hundreds of foreign-backed militants surrendered to the government troops in the province of Daraa, Syria’s National Reconciliation Committee announced on Monday

Over 1,000 terrorists laid down arms and surrendered to the Syrian authorities over the past 24 hours in Daraa, the Syrian local sources also confirmed.

The militants also turned over their cache of ammo to the authorities, both sources added.

The development came after President Bashar al-Assad in a televised address in July pardoned all soldiers who have fled the army, saying that his words served as a general decree to relevant officials.

Hundreds of gunmen have been laying down their weapons and turning themselves in to authorities in areas across the country.

This number seems to be on the rise as the army has been making steady gains in the battlefield against the terrorist groups, recapturing an increasing number of regions, including strategic sites, which helped cut off many of the militants’ supply routes and forced them to surrender or run away.

Also in the past 24 hours, the Syrian air raids destroyed concentration centres of the ISIL, al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups in Hama and Idlib.

The Syrian warplanes conducted airstrikes against positions of ISIL and the so-called Jeish al-Fath terrorists in the countryside of Hama and Idlib.

The airstrikes hit positions of the ISIL terrorists in al-Rahjan village, 50 km to the Northeast of Hama City, destroying a number of terrorists’ vehicles with all arms, ammunition and equipment on board.

The airstrikes also hit positions of al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups in Aqrab village in the Southwestern countryside of Hama, killing scores of terrorists.

A number of vehicles belonging to Jeish al-Fath terrorists were also destroyed in airstrikes in Abdin village in the countryside of Ma’aret al-Nu’aman in Idlib countryside.

Meantime, the Syrian fighter jets pounded hideouts of the Takfiri militants in the countryside of Homs.

The Syrian air raids destroyed Takfiri terrorists’ hideouts and vehicles in al-Qaryatain, al-Sa’an, and in the vicinity of al-Sha’er field in Homs countryside.

The Russian air group in Syria is using Kh-29L air-to-surface missiles to conduct airstrikes against the ISIL militants, the Russian military said Sunday.

“A Kh-29L surface-to-air missile is equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system. When the launch is conducted, a pilot illuminates a target with a laser sight. At the same time an aircraft can continue the flight,” Aerospace Forces Spokesman Colonel Igor Klimov said.

Also, the Syrian army conducted military operations against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in Aleppo province, leaving hundreds of them killed and injured.

Hundreds of terrorists were killed or wounded in Aleppo City and its countryside in the past 24 hours, a military source said.

Elsewhere, at least 28 militant fighters of the ISIL terrorist group were killed during clashes with the Kurdish forces in the Northeastern Syrian province of Hasaka.

“The YPG forces besieged the ISIL militants near Mount Abdulaziz and killed dozens of terrorists and destroyed several vehicles,” a spokesman for the YPG Media Centre told ARA News.

Also, gunmen from the Jeish al-Fath coalition of extremist groups are pulling out their forces from Idlib and other towns in Northwestern Syria.

The radical group started moving towards the Turkish border on Saturday after having experienced “the efficiency of the Russian aerospace forces’ strikes,” the As-Safir Arabic-language daily reported.

The coalition is led by al-Nusra terrorist group, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, which is sponsored by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar. The group seized the Idlib province this spring.

The report said field commanders fear at any moment the attack of Syrian forces supported by Russian warplanes on the key town of Jisr al-Shugour, on the Lattakia-Aleppo highway

Legislation Passes to Protect Babies Who Survive Abortion *

Legislation Passes to Protect Babies Who Survive Abortion *

But who will be bearing witness?

Abortion providers could face criminal charges if they allow children who have survived brutal procedure to die.

During House business on September 18, United States Representative Marlin A. Stutzman (R-Ind.) was floored by the stubborn unwillingness of House Democrats to part ways with and defund Planned Parenthood. Stutzman’s reaction comes amidst reports exposing how depraved the organization has proven itself to be via undercover videos showing the Planned Parenthood’s involvement in selling the organs and tissues of aborted babies for profit.

“How can there possibly be two sides to this?” asked Stutzman.

He was dumbfounded by the remarks of House Democrats who so brazenly defended Planned Parenthood Federation of America while invoking the Democratic party-line “pro-choice” ideology, which for over 40 years has claimed a “legal” haven for abortion on demand, based on a single U.S. Supreme Court decision in the infamous 1973 Roe v. Wade case.

Critics maintain the high court read into the Constitution a nebulous, expansive “right to privacy” to “choose” whether to end the life of the unborn. More than 50 million people are not alive today due to this alleged “legality” attached to terminating childbirth.

Scores of emotional statements on both sides of the aisle were prompted by Representative Robert William “Bob” Goodlatte (R-Va.) bringing to the floor H.R. 3504, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. He noted that the House Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, has been investigating what the bill addresses: that in some cases babies who’ve survived attempted abortions are being passively allowed to die in the clinic just after the failed abortion or actively killed in the clinic.

AFP observed the highly charged proceedings as the only press in the House chamber.

Goodlatte clarified that abortion doctors and their staff who leave the child to die would get five years in prison under this bill and those who directly kill the still-alive child, say, with a surgical tool, could get life in prison or possibly the death penalty for first-degree murder. This by all indications represents a strengthening of existing law.

The House approved the bill 248-177 with eight legislators not voting and Representative John R. Garamendi (D-Calif.) voting “present.” The vote was strictly along party lines in the Republican-controlled House.
