Whoever Controls Eurasia Controls the World*

The battle over Syria is part of a much larger – and longer-term – struggle for global hegemony…

By Hans-Christof Kraus

One can only be astounded at the scope of almost criminal naïveté, or even just plain ignorance, shown by many who are judging the Syrian crisis – in particular when it comes to revealing the background motives behind the tough game of tug-of-war in the U.N. Security Council, between America and the western powers on the one side and China and Russia on the other.

If one were to follow the narrative of the conflict in large parts of the western world, then the heart of the matter would seem to be only the question of whether or not the Syrian people could eventually be freed from a cruel dictator. Particularly in Germany, the lack of awareness seems to be limitless in the current discussion of this contest – up to the point of an alleged (although not confirmed) enquiry to the Russian government as to whether Russia would be ready to grant asylum to Assad should he be overthrown.

However, very different issues are at the core of this matter. The lines of conflict run where most German observers fail to notice them – chiefly because they have forgotten how to think in global-political and geostrategic terms. Viewed from a global-political angle, it is in the first instance irrelevant from the perspective of geostrategic considerations, whether the Syrians will be now, or in the future, ruled either by a dictator of the house of Assad, by a democratic government or at least one pretending to be democratic, or a radical Muslim regime.

A division into ‘World Island’ and ‘Heartland’

Around and after the year 1900, the world, the entire global land surface, was divided and mostly under the political reign of the Europeans and the Americans, the geostrategic thinkers of that time developed a completely new idea for global politics going forward.

The Anglo-Saxons, even though they in particular seemed invulnerable, for the first time had a reason to fear for their position in the world. British geographer and politician Halford Mackinder, shortly before the onset of the First World War, developed his extraordinarily momentous doctrine of the inferiority of the maritime global powers.

Whereas previously the maxim posed by American military historian Alfred T. Mahan had applied, stating the unassailability of globally acting maritime powers, Mackinder asserted the contrary.
In his new analysis of the world’s land surface, he assigned the sea powers to the ‘Outer Insular Crescent’, while conceiving of Europe, Asia and Africa collectively as a gigantic supercontinent which he dubbed the ‘World Island’.

The core of this World Island was supposed to be the ‘Pivot Area’, which he found to be in northern and central Asia. According to Mackinder, seven out of eight of the world’s population were situated in the ‘Pivot Area’ and its surroundings, , as well as by far the largest share of globally available raw materials. Thus, the future rulers of the world were bound to be not the Anglo-Saxon maritime powers, so Mackinder argued, but possibly the very power (or group of powers) that would succeed in bringing the ‘Pivot Area’ completely under their control.

The debate about the worlds-politically decisive region on the earth

Not only the strong Anglo-Saxon distrust in the communist Soviet Union in the interwar period, but also the inexorably led war by America and Great Britain, fought to unconditional surrender against the two axis powers Germany and Japan, who were threatening the ‘Pivot Area’ from West and East, can only be understood against the backdrop of this geopolitical conception:

The nightmare of a pivot area jointly controlled by Germany and Japan, or by Germany alone in the worst case, in the heart of Eurasia. This situation had to be averted using all possible means. This was the primary and most important war aim of Roosevelt and Churchill, to which everything else was subordinated.

Still, before the end of the war, Mackinder’s teachings about the meaning of the pivot area were improved upon and slightly altered. Nicholas Spykman, the most significant American geo-politician of his time, had developed during the war the theory that it was not actually the ‘Pivot Area’, but rather its bordering area, the ‘Rim Land’, which was the geopolitically decisive region of the world. This ‘Rim Land’ reaches from Scandinavia across Central Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Arab and Near Eastern countries and India, to Indochina, Korea as well as Eastern and Northern China.

This was to be the truly decisive region of the World Island, of the whole Eurasian continent, and he who would succeed in subjugating the ‘Rim Land’ with its enormous population and undeletable stock of raw materials, would be the ruler of the earth or at least have the ability to force it’s will upon other powers, in particular upon the traditional maritime powers.

A ban on interventions by powers from outside the region?

Based not least of all on the premises of these fundamental analyses by Spykman, who died in 1943, it became the post-war foreign policy of the United States to ultimately abandon its traditional isolationism and henceforth develop into an active driver of world politics.

For the era of the Cold War in any case it can be said that almost all of the main conflict lines between East and West have been located in the regions of this wide ‘Rim Land’ between Finland in the West and Korea in the East. Most wars of the post-WWII period, from the Korean War to the Middle-Eastern and Gulf wars to the Vietnam conflict, have taken place in this very zone.

The counter theory to Mackinder and Spykman in terms of geopolitics and international law dates back perhaps even longer; its core it can be found in the American Monroe Doctrine of 1823; borrowing the title from a well-known oeuvre of the 20th century, it could be called an “International Legal Order for Large Regions with a Ban on Interventions by Powers from Outside” (the title of a book written by Carl Schmitt).

Admittedly, this model did not work out at the time of its creation; and especially with a view to the importance of the ‘Rim Land’ and the heart land, the Americans have neither recognised, nor accepted, a ban on interventions outside of their own American hemisphere (in any case if it was directed against their own interests).

The primary goal is not to protect the Syrian people

Quite the opposite: after 1945, the Americans have repeatedly intervened in those places where they deemed it necessary to strengthen their own position of power. The oil affluent and strategically crucial region between the eastern Mediterranean and the Arab Sea has made this area in particular, a main field of action for American foreign policy. The recent Iraq war, the occupation of Afghanistan and the opaque actions in north-eastern Pakistan, which are by no means legitimate by International Law, are the result of this policy.

The current conflict about an intervention or non-intervention into the Syrian civil war is so explosive because this question is the manifestation of the antagonism between two radically different geostrategic and world political concepts.

The Americans and the Western side are not particularly concerned with helping the pitiable Syrian people, but rather with influencing the reshaping of the country after an anticipated overthrow of the current regime. Even though the U.S. and its Western partners have been able to work well with the Syrian government in the past, several long-planned oil and gas pipelines of paramount importance for the West are at stake. These pipelines are designed to connect Saudi Arabia and Qatar to the eastern Mediterranean area and Turkey and therefore are, at least partially, to cross Syrian territory.

The tables have turned

The Russians and Chinese have a different perspective. The Russian Mediterranean military base, situated in the Syrian port of Tartus, is also at stake – just like the general power/political position of Moscow and Beijing in the Middle and Near East. The prospect of a possible military conflict between Israel and Iran makes it inevitable that the two largest Asian powers will be present there.

It cannot yet be foreseen which of the two sides will prevail, as the Americans have oftentimes in the past ignored U.N. resolutions when they deemed it necessary for the advancement of their own interests. The undeclared war against Iraq, which led to the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, was only grudgingly accepted by Moscow and Beijing – in the end only because they did not dare to stand more decisively against the only highly armed world power at the time.

Today, the tables have turned: Due to severe home-made economic problems, themselves connected to a strongly over-expansionist foreign policy and military engagement, the United States finds itself in a considerably weakened position. A military intervention in Syria on their part, for this reason alone, seems hardly probable.

The die is not yet cast

Therefore the government in Washington must interpret the veto by Beijing and Moscow, now voiced three consecutive times, with which a U.N. resolution against the Syrian regime has been averted, as a serious warning. It appears that China and Russia perceive themselves in a common position of co-dominance over the South Asian realm, and their fierce ‘no’ against an intervention by western powers in Syria can well be seen in the sense of a political-international-legal doctrine of an, at least hinted at, ban on interventions by powers from outside the region, directed chiefly at America.

The government in Washington would hardly be able to accept such a ban if it is meant seriously. Because, as a consequence, it would mean the ultimate surrender of its political-economic influence, possibly even of military intervention, in the regions of the ‘Rim Land’. Washington cannot, simply in their very own interest, afford to leave these Eurasian Rim Land regions to their fate, let alone to the two Asian world powers.

Therefore, one can derive from the scope, the course, and, as can be foreseen, the soon materialising consequences of the Syrian conflict, the current distribution of geopolitical power potentials is like using a concave mirror. The die is not yet cast. Yet the geostrategic global players hold these things in their hands.

Syrian Army Seizes Control of Al-Amal Farms in Golan Heights*

Earlier this morning, the Syrian Army’s Brigade 90, in cooperation with Fouj Al-Joulan (Golan Regiment) and Liwaa Suqour Al-Quneitra (Al-Quneitra Hawks Brigade) of the National Defense Forces (NDF), launched an attack on Israeli-backed militants in the Al-Amal Farms located north of the Tal Al-Ahmar hilltops in the Golan Heights in Quneitra province.

The Syrian Armed Forces surprised the terrorists of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham (Ahrar Al-Sham Movement) and the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades” with an attack on their positions Al-Amal Farms just two days after they seized full-control of Tal Al-Ahmar.

Reports said the Syrian army won control over the farms after heavy clashes with the terrorists.

With Al-Amal Farms, Tal Qaba’a (UN Hill), and Tal Al-Ahmar (Red Hill) under their control, the Syrian government troops have now taken back almost all the regions that they lost to the militants in the Golan Heights two weeks ago.

The Syrian Armed Forces are now reportedly preparing to launch the final phase of their several-staged attack on militant-held Tal Taranjah and the Taranjah Company area in the coming days in a bid to recapture the remaining territories that they lost to the militants in the Western province of Quneitra two weeks ago and before the Russian airstrikes started.

The Syrian army, backed by the popular defense forces, regained full control over the Tal Al-Ahmar hilltops on Tuesday, and inflicted heavy losses on terrorists of al-Nusra Front and its affiliated groups, Ahrar Al-Sham and FSA.

The self-proclaimed leader of the so-called al-Sabtain Brigade, Mou’atasem al-Tahan aka Abu Mamoun, was among the dead terrorists.

Meanwhile, terrorist groups acknowledged on their social media pages that a number of terrorists, including Alaa Fathi al-Wadi, Omar Nader al-Sa’aid, Ayuob Najim al-Darawsha, Mohannad Hussein al-Tarshan, Bilal Ftaih and Ahmed Mohammad Sweidani, were killed in the clashes.

Hamas Asks Russia to Help Stop Israeli ‘Aggression’*

cdff4-la-oe-0824-miller-israel-obama-netanyahu-20140824The Hamas movement’s leader, Khaled Mesha, spoke with the Russia’s deputy foreign minister, who promised to do his best for the Palestinians.

The Palestinian Islamic Movement Hamas on Saturday called for Russian intervention to stop Israeli “aggression” against Palestinians, a request that comes after weeks of violence in the West Bank during which Israeli security forces have killed dozens of Palestinians and injured hundreds more.

According to a statement on the group’s website, Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal spoke with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov Saturday evening.

Meshal told Bogdanov that the continuing Israeli occupation and atrocities committed by the Israeli army and Jewish settlers against the Palestinian people were behind the “explosion” of anger and the “uprising” by the Palestinians.

The leader of Hamas, the Palestinian resistance group currently running affairs in the Gaza Strip, asked Russia to use its global influence as a world power in order to demand Israel stop the aggression against “our people and our holy sites.”

According to the statement, Bogdanov expressed discontent over what is happening and promised that Moscow would do its best.

That statement comes amid increasingly warm ties between Israel and Russia. The two countries recently conducted a joint training session in order to avoid potential conflicts over Russia’s intervention in Syria, which Israel supports.

Senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar said in a sermon at the al-Katiba Mosque in Gaza on Saturday that “the intifada has begun and we don’t know when it will end.”

“The intifada has brought the Palestinian issue back to the centre of attention,” he asserted.

Earlier on Saturday, three more shootings took place in the West Bank city of Hebron, where about 500 Jewish settlers live in a heavily guarded enclave in the city centre. They are surrounded by nearly 200,000 Palestinians.

In the first Hebron incident, a Palestinian tried to stab a settler before his intended victim, who was unharmed, shot him dead, according to the Israeli army. Witnesses, however, disputed that account.

A video, released by Youth Against Settlements coalition, showed a young man wearing a Jewish kippa, or cap, brandishing a pistol as shots rang out before Israeli soldiers moved in to pull him away from a body lying on the ground. The Electronic Intifada reported that at the 12 second-mark of the video, a soldier gives an object to another soldier, who appears to place it near the body.

Joint U.S. and German research teams have discovered a new form of solar ejection involving high energy blast waves and helium-3 based particle matter. The discovery was aided by NASA spacecraft STEREO A and ACE.

A new solar phenomenon has been discovered by two research teams led by Nariaki Nitta from the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in the USA and Radoslav Bucík from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Germany. They have discovered that large-scale waves in the Sun’s atmosphere are accompanied by energetic particle emissions rich in helium-3 (a light form of the inert gas helium).

Moreover, these waves may play a significant part in accelerating these helium-3 particles into space. Two NASA spacecraft, STEREO A and ACE, played a major role in this discovery by viewing the Sun from two different directions at once. This research was featured in The Astrophysical Journal on October 7, 2015.

The Sun’s surface is highly active. The average solar eruption is accompanied by other solar phenomena like Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) where a plasma of electrons, protons, and a few heavy atoms is hurled into space, as well as short, collimated solar flares.

A look at the Sun’s right limb on January 26, 2010. Within the marked red square a large-scale blast wave travels through the Sun’s atmosphere. These images were obtained with the help of NASA’s STEREO A probe and show the Sun’s atmosphere in extreme ultraviolet light. Image credit : NASA/STEREO A/MPS/AAS

The high energy waves were detected in data collected between January 26, 2010 and February 2, 2010. The waves encompassed over half a million kilometers (0.31 million miles) in area and accelerated at a speed of  approximately 300 kilometers per second (186.4 miles per second). Unlike other solar phenomena, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) did not act as a trigger for the newly discovered waves. The waves were preceded by a weak solar X-ray flare. However, the blast waves have nothing in common with this typical form of solar radiation. “The new phenomenon is like a kind of explosion,” said Bucik, who headed the team of researchers at the MPS, the Johns Hopkins University, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US.

The researchers also found that a Helium-3 rich particle stream is emitted by the Sun simultaneously with the blast waves. Such particle emissions aren’t rare and are well known. However, researchers have been unable to explain this phenomena so far.

“We believe that the blast waves accelerate the Helium-3,” says Davina Innes from the MPS. “Our analysis shows that typical characteristics of the waves, such as their energy, influence the properties of the particles”, adds her colleague Lijia Guo, also stationed at the MPS. However, how exactly this works, is still unclear.

The link between the blast waves and the Helium-3 emissions was confirmed by observing the Sun from two different directions at the same time. In 2010 when this data was collected, STEREO A was positioned exactly above the right limb of the Sun allowing it to record the solar region from where these blast waves and particle streams originated. Simultaneously, ACE, which was orbiting close to Earth could detect the Helium-3 rich particles.

“STEREO A is the only solar observatory in space, which does not remain close to Earth, but travels around the Sun,” explains Bucik.

The researchers believe that the newly discovered blast waves are pretty common but not easily viewable.

“Unfortunately, however, in the foreseeable future the necessary viewing geometry will not occur again,” says Bucik.

Man Harvests Water for 10,000 People in Driest Part of India*

By Terry Turner

When groundwater started disappearing in the Indian state of Rajasthan, Bhagwati Agrawal invented a way to tap a “river in the sky.”

For most of the year, Rajasthan is so dry, people use sand to clean their dishes. But during monsoon season, there is plenty of rain — enough water to last villages for an entire year if they could capture enough of it.

Agrawal invented a way to do that, a water collection system called Aakash Ganga – Hindi for “River from the Sky” – which now supplies 10,000 people with year-round clean, healthy drinking water.

A public-private partnership rents rooftops and sets up collection networks of pipes and underground storage tanks. Part of the rain captured by his system goes to the homeowner, the rest through a series of pipes to community reservoirs.

Agrawal is spreading the systems through Indian villages through his nonprofit, Sustainable Innovations, but he’s also spreading a better quality of life. When families no longer have to spend precious time hauling water long distances, adults can spend more time working and children can spend more time in school.

In the villages where he’s deployed the rain harvesting systems, overall health has improved and dairy cattle are producing twice as much milk.

His work has made Agrawal one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes of the Year.

You can vote for him as your choice for Hero of the Year at CNNHeroes.com. The network will announce the winner at their annual televised award show December 6, and present the 2015 winner with $100,000 for continuing his or her good work.

Pope Francis Faces a Backlash from Cardinals*

Pope Francis Faces a Backlash from Cardinals*

By Leo Lyon Zagami

A Conservative backlash has been building for quite some time in the Vatican.  On October12, 2015, at 7pm, all hell broke loose at the Vatican. The mild Bergoglio went ballistic and had a mild stroke. This occurred after the website l’Espresso  posted an open letter addressed to the Pope in which 13 conservative cardinals voiced their objections.

At this point Roberto D’Agostino reports from his website Dagospia, the usually mild and peaceful Bergoglio lost it completely, and thundered against the purple conservatives prelates stating:

“If this is the case, they can leave. The Church does not need them. I will throw them all out!”

And then full of rage, he had a mild stroke. The pope has been under stress for months, one more reason I expect him to retire in 2016.

There  has been a massive cover up of the Pope’s violent outburst, especially  by the international press who don’t want to tarnish the Masonic Pope’s well crafted image.

The instigator of the letter was Australian Cardinal George Pell, who the Pope had originally wanted to guide the Vatican finances, before changing his mind. Despite formally covering the post of prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, Pell has long been “policed” by the Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin for his conservative stand against the Jesuits and the Gay Lobby.

The  puppet master of the rebellion against Pope Francis, and the abomination he has made of the Church is the Cardinal of Milan, Cardinal Angelo Scola.

Cardinal Scola had originally placed himself amongst the authors of the letter, but apparently decided to remove his signature at the last minute, to avoid suspicion on the fact that he is behind this conservative reaction going on in the Synod.

The staged “coming out” of Monsignor Charamsa has come back to haunt the Rainbow faction of the Church, as the reaction has increased discontent among the Cardinals.

Roberto D’Agostino also reports there has been a sudden shift towards the conservative side, and Bergoglio, seems suddenly worried.

Because of all the conspiracy theories and revelations made in the last few weeks,  my inside sources told me today he now seems more cautious in his pro gay pronouncements.

The coming out stunt of Monsignor “Charisma” seems to have been a public relations miscalculation.  Now that the ‘gay lobby’ is at the helm of media and public relations, ‘group think‘ has kicked in.  They’ve skewed demographics and polls  in their favour so much that they’ve lost touch with the demographic reality:  98% of the public aren’t gay.

The odd resurgence of new membership in the Church from 2005-2012 has definitely gone into reverse with Pope Francis. His media driven popularity is a mirage, for his ‘fans’ don’t join churches.  According to Pew in May 2015, “Percentage of U.S. Catholics drops and Catholicism is losing members faster than any denomination“.  As a member myself, I can tell you the plan at top is filling the breech with Mexican and South American economic refugees (aka, immigrants).  This is the sort of treachery against the host country by the Roman Church that earned Catholics and especially Jesuits a bad reputation in the past.   Currently any diocese with an increasing immigrant population is installing foreign priests and forming welcome committees to literally hand over churches and facilities built by American citizens and their ancestors, to immigrants.

The Father Charamsa scandal has forced the Pope to put aside his impetuosity in promoting the New World Order Church, and prudently pursue a dialogue to reconcile the different positions.  However it may be too late and the synod could end up as a complete failure, say the Vatican experts in Rome.

Terrorist in-fighting as Russian Jets Destroy ISIS Supply Lines*

Russian attack jets have hit 51 Islamic State targets in Syria in the past 24 hours, including four command posts, six arms depots, a mortar battery, two underground bunkers, 32 field camps and six outposts.

The strikes took place in the Latakia, Aleppo, Hama and Damascus provinces.

The damage the Russian SU-34 jets caused to the underground bunkers was especially significant, Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

They hit the terrorists’ underground infrastructure in Homs, which had allowed the militants to move undetected and increase their effectiveness in combat.

The well-funded Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has been hiding whole weapons caches underground, which included explosive devices for carrying out terrorist attacks.

A small missile factory was among the objects destroyed. However, these underground bases and conduits are believed to be widespread across Syria, so more work needs to be done, Konashenkov says.

A frontline supply junction for transporting fuel, arms and food supply lines was also hit in the Damascus province.

The entire command infrastructure of one of the terrorist groups operating in the Hama province was disrupted by the strikes, sending the militants fleeing from the area, the Defense Ministry added.

According to information from the Russian armed forces, desertions on a massive scale are occurring amongst IS ranks in the north and north-east of the country. In the Raqqa province, IS has started a mobilization of everyone aged 14 and over.

In Idlib and Hama, field commanders with Al-Nusra Front are resorting to separating families at gunpoint in order to get their hands on ever younger child soldiers.

Fighting between different jihadist groups over territory control and funds are also on the rise, the Defense Ministry report states. Intercepted radio communications suggest that IS has targeted Al-Nusra Front with three car bombings in the past week.

IS leaders are demanding that their field commanders employ more car bombs and other home-made explosives against advancing Syrian forces, the report says.
