FDA Approves Genetically Engineered Salmon as ‘Safe to Eat’*

FDA Approves Genetically Engineered Salmon as ‘Safe to Eat’*

By Derrick Broze

Following several years of controversy surrounding the safety of genetically engineered (GE) salmon, the FDA has announced that AquAdvantage salmon is as safe and nutritious to eat as the non-genetically engineered variety.

The FDA stated,

“The FDA scientists rigorously evaluated extensive data submitted by the manufacturer, AquaBounty Technologies, and other peer-reviewed data, to assess whether AquAdvantage salmon met the criteria for approval established by law.”

The FDA says the data shows

“that the inserted genes remained stable over several generations of fish, that food from the GE salmon is safe to eat by humans and animals, that the genetic engineering is safe for the fish, and the salmon meets the sponsor’s claim about faster growth.”

Assessments of the environmental impact of the GE salmon found that “the approval would not have a significant impact on the environment of the United States.” Critics have long feared that GE salmon might escape from AquaBounty facilities and disrupt salmon in the wild. However, the FDA writes that “the multiple containment measures the company will use in the land-based facilities in Panama and Canada make it extremely unlikely that the fish could escape and establish themselves in the wild.”

Several consumer advocacy and anti-genetic engineering groups condemned the decision. The group Food and Water Watch has launched a petition asking President Obama to overturn the FDA’s approval.

A statement from the Consumers Union reads,

“Unfortunately, the evidence of FDA’s evaluation of the AquAdvantage salmon suggests that FDA has set the bar very low.”

The group accused the FDA of “sloppy science, small sample sizes, and questionable practices.”

The organization also challenged the FDA’s analysis of growth hormone levels in the flesh, accusing the agency of making a decision “despite having no data at all on growth hormone levels due to use of insensitive test methodology.”

The FDA released two guidance documents discussing their position on labeling and outlining what types of voluntary labeling would be accepted for non-GE salmon. The agency said food manufacturers may use phrases like “Not genetically engineered,” “Not genetically modified through the use of modern biotechnology,” and “We do not use Atlantic salmon produced using modern biotechnology.”

Despite the FDA’s decision, AquaBounty has faced criticism and lawsuits for their products. On Tuesday the Guardian reported that several environmental groups are suing the Canadian government in an attempt to end the production of GE salmon eggs. The lawsuit claims AquaBounty is operating a “huge live experiment” with the genes of the wild Atlantic salmon. The Canadian government previously gave AquaBounty permission to create GE salmon eggs in Canada and ship them to Panama to be grown before selling them on the market in the U.S. and Canada.

In April 2013 Food and Water Watch reported:

“When FDA first announced its intent to approve AquaBounty’s application in the fall of 2010, the public sent more than 400,000 comments in opposition. Now that opposition has grown to nearly 1.5 million people.”

The following year Kroger and Safeway, the nation’s two largest grocery chains, announced they would not sell the genetically engineered salmon. The two chains joined Target, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s in their opposition to the GE salmon. So although the FDA has approved the fish for human consumption, it may be unlikely that Americans will encounter the product at their local grocer.

The Guardians of Prophet Muhammad’s Burial Chamber*

The Guardians of Prophet Muhammad’s Burial Chamber*

By Ishtar Al

In the exhibition ‘The Guardians,’ Adel Quraishi has produced an intimate glimpse into the individuals entrusted with the keys to the Prophet’s burial chamber at Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi in Madina Al-Manawarah- or Madina The Radiant. Keeping to themselves, the gatekeepers are revered for their service to the Masjid. Though the portraits capture eight of the Guardians, only five remain from what was once a community of hundreds in the city of Medina.

Keepers are appointed to maintain the Prophet’s Mosque, a practice that has spanned centuries, dating as far back as the 12th century. Today’s gatekeepers of the Prophets’ burial chamber originate from present day Eritrea and Ethiopia. Ethiopian eunuchs were commonly found in the fourteenth century, despite efforts made to ban the practice of castration in the country. In the Arabian Peninsula, the men were known for their roles as servitors and gatekeepers of the Masjid. This custodian role, which dates back to the twelfth century, continues today.

Quraishi documents the custodians of the Masjid for the first time in a series of photographs. Commissioned by the Governor of Medina, Quraishi delivers a poignant look at the last of the eunuch guardians, described to pursue a simple existence maintaining the burial chamber in the Masjid.

Adel Quraishi is a Saudi Arabian photographer from Al Khobar, in the Eastern province. His describes passion for portraiture through the connection he feels with his subjects:

“In a very deep way there were emotions not easily expressed, but I still felt it. You feel at ease around them. They have very balanced personalities. There was light in the room- not my own lighting, but there was something beyond that. A beautiful energy.”

Quraishi’s portraits deliver just that, by providing a moving insight into the eight remaining custodians of the holy burial chamber. This is an exhibition not to be missed on the premiere of the photographs in the UK.

The exhibition runs at Leighton House Museum until the 29th November as a part of the Nour Festival of Arts, with the museum acting as the perfect setting for Quraishi’s work, with its vivid architecture and magnificent Arab Hall. Leighton House showcases paintings, sculpture, tiles and furnishings from across the world and is well worth the visit.

Erta Ale’s Lava Lake Close to Overflowing, Ethiopia*

Erta Ale’s Lava Lake Close to Overflowing, Ethiopia*

The active lava lake in the southern pit of the Ethiopian Erta Ale volcano, 30 – 40 m (100 – 130 feet) in diameter, remains very active and approaches levels close to overflowing the margins of the pit again, being only a few meters below the floor of the caldera, Volcano Discovery reports.

Erta Ale, known in the local Afar language as the “smoking mountain” and “the gateway to hell” is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of north-eastern Ethiopia. It is centered over the East African Rift system, a triple junction setting whose movements are resulting in the formation of a pull-apart basin or rift. The volcano comprises mainly Mafic material (silicate mineral or rock rich in magnesium and iron) which has been brought up to the surface caused by unroofing of the mantle due to this rift formation.

Not much is known about Erta Ale, as the surrounding terrain is some of the most inhospitable on Earth and the native Afar people have a legendary reputation for viciousness towards outsiders. Nevertheless, a Volcano Discovery group is currently there and we expect fresh news in about 10 days.

Erta Ale experienced a major eruption on September 25, 2005 which killed 250 head of livestock and forced thousands of nearby residents to flee. There was further lava flow in August 2007, forcing the evacuation of hundreds and leaving two missing.

Scientists from the Afar Consortium Project observed the lava lake during November 21 – 23, 2010 and noted Strombolian activity. The lava lake had filled the pit crater and breached the west rim, spilling two lava flows into the main crater. The lava lake was encompassed by a scoria ring that was about 4 m (13 feet) high on the south side. By November 23, the lake was above the scientist’s eye level when they stood west of the southern pit in the main crater.

To have a better understanding of Erta Ale and the region it is situated in, we invite you to watch the video titled “Ethiopia from the air”, filmed and edited by Boris Pustovoytov and Evgeniy Selezenyov mid-November 2015.

Geological summary

Erta Ale is an isolated basaltic shield volcano that is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. The broad, 50-km-wide edifice rises more than 600 m from below sea level in the barren Danakil depression. Erta Ale is the namesake and most prominent feature of the Erta Ale Range. The 613-m-high volcano contains a 0.7 x 1.6 km, elliptical summit crater housing steep-sided pit craters. Another larger 1.8 x 3.1 km wide depression elongated parallel to the trend of the Erta Ale range is located to the SE of the summit and is bounded by curvilinear fault scarps on the SE side.

Fresh-looking basaltic lava flows from these fissures have poured into the caldera and locally overflowed its rim. The summit caldera is renowned for one, or sometimes two long-term lava lakes that have been active since at least 1967, or possibly since 1906. Recent fissure eruptions have occurred on the northern flank. (GVP)

Israeli Manufacturers Move Factories from Settlements to Avoid E.U. Labelling*

Israeli Manufacturers Move Factories from Settlements to Avoid E.U. Labelling*

Israeli companies have begun to relocate their factories from settlements built on occupied Palestinian land in order to avoid labelling their products as a way of circumventing the E.U. crackdown on settler-produced goods, Turkey’s Anadolu agency has reported.

Antoine Shalhat, a researcher in Israeli affairs, told the news agency yesterday that:

“Israeli companies are moving their businesses to Israel to circumvent the E.U. decision to avoid E.U. labelling.”

Shalhat explained that the Israeli government will try everything to protect the settlements’ economy and that “the decision to remove the factories from the settlements has always been on the table.”

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported, that some Israeli companies who have factories in the settlements decided not to wait for the European Union’s decision and relocated their plants to within the Green Line.

According to the paper, some well-known companies that have already moved their factories from the settlements include SodaStream, Volcano, Beagle-Beagle and Multilock.

A spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy, Azmi Abdul Rahman, said the Israeli factories decided not to wait for the EU’s decision and relocated their plants earlier in the year.

“However, these companies and factories have increased the pace of moving their headquarters to circumvent the European decision,” he told Anadolu.

The Palestinian Minister of Economy Abeer Odeh called on the European Union in a statement last week to be cautious, saying some Israeli factories label their products as having been produced in Israel when in fact they are manufactured in the settlements.

According to the Federation of Israeli Industrialists, there are some 600 Israeli factories operating in the West Bank, including a number of huge export companies.

The Federation estimates the total export value for products produced the settlements and imported to the European Union to range between $300 and $400 million a year out of Israel’s total of $15 billion exports to E.U. countries.

Myanmar’s New Western-backed Dictator, Aung San Suu Kyi*

Myanmar’s New Western-backed Dictator, Aung San Suu Kyi*

Suu Kyi disenfranchised a million voters before elections, and has declared herself above the constitution afterwards. What about that seems “democratic?”

By Tony Cartalucci

The Western media is portraying Myanmar’s recent elections as historic. One commentator described Myanmar as an “exuberant nation prepared for a new era of democracy and political freedom.” But one wonders what sort of democracy and political freedom can be borne of elections in which nearly a million voters were banned from casting their ballots and with the apparent victor already declaring herself above the law.

Sidestepping these inconvenient facts, the West is nonetheless excited about the prospect of Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) taking power in Myanmar.

This is in part due to the fact that Suu Kyi herself, along with the NLD she leads and a vast network of supporting “civil society” nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have all been created and sustained annually by billions of dollars worth of backing from the United States and United Kingdom for years.

In exchange for this support, Suu Kyi’s long-standing proclivity toward “foreign investment” will lead to the wholesale feeding of Myanmar’s nationalized resources, industry, and infrastructure into the maw of the Wall Street corporations and institutions that have long underwritten Suu Kyi’s rise to power.

“Democracy” and “political freedom,” in this context, appear only to be convenient facades to hide a more obvious and logical explanation for the West’s current post-election exuberance.

“Democracy,” But Only When Convenient

In reality, Suu Kyi and her NLD’s supporters helped disenfranchise nearly a million Rohingya from voting even before the elections took place.  Through widespread protests and threats of violence if their demands that the Rohingya remain stripped of their voting rights were not met, the ruling military-led government backed down from a scheme to grant the Rohingya minority long-sought after rights, including the ability to vote.

The BBC reported in their article, “Myanmar revokes Rohingya voting rights after protests,” that:

Hundreds of Buddhists took to the streets following the passage of a law that would allow temporary residents who hold “white papers” to vote.

More than one million Rohingya live in Myanmar, but they are not regarded as citizens by the government.

The BBC fails to mention that these “Buddhists” who “took to the streets” are in fact the cornerstone of Suu Kyi’s political movement, leading every major pro-NLD protest over the years including the infamous “Saffron Revolution” in 2007.

They and the violence they have demonstrated throughout the years, were instrumental in ensuring Suu Kyi’s uncontested victory in recent elections by ensuring demographic blocs were either barred from voting entirely, or intimidated sufficiently from voting against the NLD.

Suu Kyi Declares Herself Above the Law

Additionally, in the wake of Suu Kyi’s apparent victory, she has literally declared herself above Myanmar’s constitution, vowing to make all decisions regardless of who is actually made president under the law.

The Guardian’s report, “Aung San Suu Kyi vows to make all the decisions in Myanmar’s new government,” stated that (emphasis added):

Under the constitution anyone with foreign children is barred from becoming president, in a clause seen as the military’s attempt to stop her taking power. But Suu Kyi, who has two British sons, suggested she would still be Myanmar’s leader.

Asked what she meant by stating last week that she would be “above the president”, Suu Kyi said:

“If I’m required to field a president who meets the requirements of section F of the constitution, alright then we’ll find one. But that won’t stop me making all the decisions as the leader of the winning party.”

Asked if she planned to be president in all but name, she said “It’s a name only,” and after laughing added: “A rose by any other name.”

Suu Kyi’s disenfranchisement of the Rohingya and flagrant disregard for the rule of law demonstrates the very dictatorial traits she has long accused the ruling establishment of for decades.

Whether Suu Kyi agrees with Myanmar’s current laws or not, her choice to arbitrarily and selectively observe some while disregarding others entirely – instead of pursuing change through proper, legal procedures – makes her indistinguishable from the alleged “dictatorship” she claims to be replacing.

In the coming weeks and months, if Suu Kyi’s victory materializes in her NLD’s firm grip on power, one wonders what other laws she will selectively observe or disregard. For Myanmar’s Rohingya minority, the military-led government at times formed the only protection preventing genocide at the hands of Suu Kyi’s ultra-violent saffron mobs.

With the diminished role of the military in government and Suu Kyi’s self-serving and selective adherence to the rule of law, her supporters likely anticipate a free hand in actualizing their genocidal ambitions versus not only the Rohingya, but all of their political and socio-cultural enemies.

Not only is the prospect of wider violence a concern for the people of Myanmar, but the rise of political order in Myanmar unwilling or incapable of stemming genocide spells chaos for its neighbors, particularly Thailand.

Myanmar’s Age of Disillusionment Has Begun

Suu Kyi’s “promising victory” will inevitably deteriorate not unlike the initially promising victory of Thaksin Shinawatra in neighbouring Thailand in 2001. Shinawatra’s initial tidal wave of naive support and progressive expectations yielded to a reality of unprecedented abuses of power, the privatization and selling-off to foreign corporations of Thailand’s nationalized resources and infrastructure, humiliating geopolitical concessions to the United States, and unprecedented human rights abuses including the mass murder of some 3,000 innocent people during a 90-day police crackdown in 2003.

After over a decade of clinging to power owed mainly to substantial Western support, Shinawatra and his various proxies were finally ousted from power by a military coup. Thailand’s painful but necessary decade-long national nightmare helped disillusion the majority of Thais regarding the empty promises of “globalization” and Western notions of “democracy.” Today, there stands little chance of Shinawatra or a Shinawatra-like character ever again seizing so much power in the near to intermediate future.

If and when a similar awakening occurs in Myanmar is anyone’s guess. However, the paradox of Suu Kyi’s pro-democracy facade versus her undemocratic, inhumane reality, particularly her and her supporters’ abuse of Myanmar’s Rohingya minority, has become so apparent even the West is having a difficult time glossing over it.

Increasingly frequent articles like the London Guardian’s, Why is Aung San Suu Kyi silent on the plight of the Rohingya people?,” attempt to claim Suu Kyi’s role in what is essentially ethnically-motivated genocide is mere silence. In reality, Suu Kyi’s silence is complicity, and those carrying out atrocities form the cornerstone of her support base, representing millions of votes.

Suu Kyi’s trading in of her clearly disingenuous principles and the basic human rights of the Rohingya people in exchange for votes has raised concern even among some of the most indoctrinated rank and file across the West’s vast network of NGOs.

It will only become increasingly difficult to continue rationalizing Suu Kyi’s actions to fit her empty rhetoric and manufactured image.

As Suu Kyi and her NLD get their hands dirty leading – or rather misleading – the country, wider disillusionment will follow. Should the military or other opposition parties prepare themselves sufficiently, the opportunity to successfully and permanently dismantle the NLD and all its US-UK funded supporting networks, will reveal itself sooner than later.

Real progress in Myanmar will happen when the people of Myanmar themselves – all of them including ethnic minorities like the Rohingya – are able to more equitably utilize its vast natural and human resources for their own future, not that of a handful of special interests in the capital of Naypyidaw, and not that of a handful of special interests on Wall Street or in London.

Myanmar may believe it has shed dictatorship in recent elections, but it is clear they have only replaced one of local and very limited means, with one backed by immense foreign interests bringing with them centuries of experience in emptying out the wealth of other nations – including at one point in the past, Myanmar itself.

Russian Missiles Kill 600+ ISIS Members in One Strike*

The Russian military has launched cruise missiles against ISIS positions in Syria from both the Mediterranean and Caspian seas, one of which killed over 600 terrorists in the Deir Ex-Zor Province, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has said.

“On November 20, the warships of the Caspian Fleet launched 18 cruise missiles at seven targets in the provinces of Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo. All targets were hit successfully,” he reported to President Vladimir Putin.

Overall, there are 10 warships taking part in the operation, six of which are in the Mediterranean.

ISIS have been suffering huge losses as a result of the Russian offensive, Shoigu said, adding that data on the ground shows that the flow of terrorists arriving in Syria has decreased, while more and more militants are fleeing the warzone to head north and south-west.

Over the past four days, Russian air forces have conducted 522 sorties, deploying more than 100 cruise missiles and 1,400 tons of bombs of various types, the minister stated.

He added that a strike on a target in Deir ez-Zor utilizing multiple cruise missiles had killed more than 600 militants.

Shoigu stressed that the number of aircraft taking part in the operation has been doubled, and now consists of 69 jets conducting 143 sorties on a daily basis.

The minister pointed out that Russia is focused on destroying the terrorists’ economic base, having targeted 15 oil storage and refinery facilities as well as 525 oil trucks.

We stopped supplies of 60,000 tons of oil per day to the black market and terrorists are losing $1.5 million daily,” Shoigu said.

Russia has also destroyed 23 jihadists training camps, 19 plants producing explosives, 47 ammunition depots, as well as many other targets, according to the minister.

In addition, Russia’s air campaign has provided significant support for Syrian government troops near Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia and Palmyra, he noted.

He also added that the Russian military has begun cooperating with its French counterparts, as ordered by President Putin.

The Defense Ministry has published a video showing Russian servicemen at the Khmeimim airbase in Syria writing ‘For our people’ and ‘For Paris’ on bombs that were later dropped on the terrorists.

We have a lot of evidence that Russian airstrikes are effective,” Syrian Brigadier General Ali Maihub told Interfax.

Russian mass airstrikes did irreparable damage to international terrorist organizations in Syria, disrupted their administration and financing systems and destroyed their bases and depots,” he added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov still maintains that Russia will not engage in a ground operation against the IS in Syria.

“There has been no discussion about a ground operation and there is still no discussion,” Peskov told reporters.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry have discussed in a phone conversation the need for a joint effort to combat ISIS in Syria, as well as the necessity of launching talks between Damascus and the Syrian opposition, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

A U.S. official said on Friday that Russia has given the U.S. advance notice before airstrikes at least three times since the attacks in Paris, Reuters reports.

ISIS Uses Dolls as Bombs to Attack Mass Shia Pilgrimage*

Iraqi forces prevented a major ISIS attack as they found and disabled 18 booby-trapped dolls with explosives inside just north of the capital Baghdad. The plot targeted Shia Muslims going on an upcoming religious pilgrimage.

The diabolical plan was to scatter all the dolls alongside the road between Baghdad and Karbala during the Arba’een pilgrimage, which is a Shia Muslim annual religious observance.

Millions of Shia Muslims walk the path every year. In 2014, there was a new record number of pilgrims, totaling 17.5 million people.

Arba’een is the end of the 40-day mourning period following the anniversary of the death of the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, Imam Hussein.

All the dolls were discovered in Husseiniya, a suburb northeast of Baghdad, according to the Kuwait News agency (KUNA).

Authorities asked residents to report any suspicious objects.

Countries have been cracking down on terrorist plots following an escalation of ISIS activity around the world.

Earlier in the week, Kuwait uncovered an international cell that supplied ISIS with weapons bought in Ukraine, as well as funds and new recruits. Six members were arrested but four others, including Australian-Lebanese nationals, remain on the run abroad.

Meanwhile, northern and western Iraq have been engulfed in violence as ISIS fighters strive to take over more territory. The extremist group has also resorted to brutal crimes against ethnic and religious communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.

Baghdad also had an upsurge in attacks, as at least 26 people died and dozens other were wounded on November 13, as ISIS claimed responsibility for explosions in the city.
