U.S. Senate to Declare “International Martial Law”*

U.S. Senate to Declare “International Martial Law”*

By Justin Gardner

The U.S. Senate is poised to give President Obama and the next president unprecedented war powers that amount to declaring martial law upon the entire world. Majority leader Mitch McConnell surprised almost everyone last week by saying he has a war resolution ready to be voted on at any time.

The resolution is a new authorization for use of military force (AUMF) for declaring war on ISIS. It would give the president even more power than the AUMF granted to Bush after 9/11, which is still in place today.

The AUMF put forward by McConnell would not restrict the president’s use of ground troops, nor have any limits related to time or geography. Nor would it touch on the issue of what to do with the 2001 AUMF, which the Obama administration has used to attack ISIS despite that authorization’s instructions to use force against those who planned the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Considering what Bush and Obama did with the 2001 AUMF—invading and occupying countries in “pre-emptive” war, CIA black sites, extrajudicial killings, inventing the term “enemy combatants” to bypass international law, new forms of torture, drone bombing women and children, and assassinating U.S. citizens—the spectre of a new and expanded AUMF is truly frightening.

“This resolution is a total rewrite of the War Powers Clause in the U.S. Constitution,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn).

“It is essentially a declaration of international martial law, a sweeping transfer of military power to the president that will allow him or her to send U.S. troops almost anywhere in the world, for almost any reason, with absolutely no limitations.”

McConnell’s resolution is more than what Obama asked for last year, but this is of little relevance since Obama has been carrying out a war against ISIS, including the use of Special Forces, with no authorization. The administration has refused to put forward a legal framework, insisting that the 2001 AUMF is enough.

As the New York Times pointed out, ISIS was created long after 9/11 and is actually a competitor to al Qaida, which means that Obama’s war on ISIS is not justified under the 2001 AUMF. Even members of Congress recognize that current military operations have no legal basis.

“I believe the war is illegal,” said Sen. Tim Kaine.

“I don’t think there’s a legal justification for it. And I think the greatest danger we end up doing is allowing the president to wage a war without Congress weighing in.”

Using this rationale, Kaine and others in Congress are thrilled to know that a new AUMF could be voted on at any time. Some would prefer more restrictions, but the bottom line is that it represents and abdication of constitutional duties that would give vast military powers to one person.

Sen. John Cornyn expressed the usual platitudes in cheering for the vote, saying “the people we send in harm’s way need to know that the country is behind them” and “we also don’t need to tie the hands of the next president by restricting what the president can do.”

For some lawmakers, it’s more about giving the next president unlimited power than it is about Obama. McConnell’s about-face from December, when he expressed no interest in voting on an AUMF, may also be a ploy to make the issue a major talking point in the presidential election. There’s nothing like talk of war to whip up fear in the masses and distract them from substantive issues.

It is no coincidence that just days ago, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said about the fight against ISIS,

We’re looking for opportunities to do more and there will be boots on the ground and I want to be clear about that.”

Since ISIS is partially a product of American intervention in the Middle East, being cultivated from the Salafist sect to foment regime change in Syria, “boots on the ground” would complete another cycle for the merchants of death and destruction. The Hegelian Dialectic—create the problem, stoke the reaction, offer the solution—is a tried and true method for endless war.

We have already seen the extremely tenuous connections that war-makers use to justify their death and destruction waged around the world and on their own people. McConnell’s AUMF would clear away any feeble barriers that still stand in the way of a military dictatorship.

Was there ever a place called Palestine?

The Jews insist that there was not. However, historic maps predating the establishment of “Israel” tell a different story. It was always Palestine. The state of “Israel” is not a real country, but a vicious hologram superimposed on the land of Palestine. There will always be a Palestine. “Israel” is a temporary aberration which will be one day be remembered in history with the same loathing currently reserved for the Nazis.

Why Apartheid Still Exists in South Africa*

Why Apartheid Still Exists in South Africa*

By Amando Flavio

The Republic of South Africa has a very disturbing history. Between 1948 and 1994, there existed a system of racial segregation known as apartheid in the country.

Apartheid was enforced through legislation by the National Party (NP), the governing party made up of the white minority racial group in the country. The NP suppressed dissenting views from the black majority, and with the backing of some Western powers such the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the United States (U.S.), the small white-regime survived for almost 46 years.

Observers say the U.S and the U.K had big corporations in South Africa, and due to these interests, these two Superpowers pursued a foreign policy favourable to the apartheid regime, blatantly ignoring the suffering of the black majority.

Even Margret Thatcher’s spokesman, Bernard Ingham, famously said that anyone who believed that the African National Congress, a predominantly black party would ever form the government of South Africa was “living in cloud cuckoo land”. Also, the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative lobbying organization, actively campaigned against divesting from South Africa throughout the 1980s.

Under the apartheid system, the rights, associations, and movements of the majority black inhabitants and other ethnic groups were also curtailed. White supremacy was the order of the day. Whites were better educated, had the best jobs, and lived in the best parts of the country among others.

However, this social, political, and economic exclusion of the black majority by the apartheid regime will culminate in the rise of African Nationalism, and the spirit that the black man is capable of managing his own affairs.

It was true the rise of this new spirit of African Nationalism and self-determination by the black majority that activist like Nelson Mandela emerged. Mandela was branded as a terrorist by the apartheid regime, and even including the U.K. Imprisoned on an isolated island, Mandela will be released from jail, and will later become the first black president of the country.

But as Mandela and his Black Nationalist elements won the political independence in the country, on the other hand, the huge social and economic gap between whites and blacks still existed, even up till day. The hope that the black nationalists had in fighting for freedom and independence has soon become a lost one. The future is not certain for many South African blacks.

It is against this historical background that the Australian renowned journalist and filmmaker, John Richard Pilger put together a documentary about why apartheid still exists in South Africa despite the blacks having access to the political seat of the country.

Pilger was born and raised in Australia, but he has been living in the U.K. since 1962. He served as a war correspondent in the Vietnam War, reporting for the Daily Mirror.  Pilger has been a strong critic of American, Australian and British foreign policy. According to him, these countries foreign policies are driven by an imperialist agenda. He is also a strong advocate for Indigenous Peoples’ rights.

With this history of being the defender of the oppressed, Pilger in 1998 looked at the situation in South Africa and put together a thoughtful documentary titled ‘Apartheid Did Not Die’.

Some people have described the film as the sad truth that blacks in South Africa only gained political independence and a colorful flag in 1994. The Rainbow colours of the flag of South Africa were made the official flag of the country after the end of Apartheid in 1994.

In the film, Pilger chronicled clearly how the heroic Nelson Mandela and his compatriots in secret negotiations with the apartheid regime bargained away black economic rights resulting in compromised independence.

Pilger gathered that whites in South Africa still remained the captains of the economy while the black still served them just like the apartheid era.

And according to some critics of the apartheid regime, this painful reality and injustice is protected by use of sentimentalities of reconciliation and national unity expressed in the largely wishful slogans about a rainbow nation. The colours in the flag are primarily used to represent the oneness of the different skin colours in the country, and critics say this has overshadow the realities in the country.

The realities are issues of education, employment, health among others facing the black majority of the country. All the industries and the big corporations in the country are owned by the whites. Inequality between whites and blacks in South Africa is real. And those are some of the pressing issues that the film addresses. Take your time to watch the film and learn some of the historical incidents that have happened in the world before today.

Matt Damon Calls on Governor Snyder to Resign Over Flint Water Crisis*

Matt Damon Calls on Governor Snyder to Resign Over Flint Water Crisis*

The Oscar-nominated actor and co-founder of Water.org spoke to The Daily Beast about the federal emergency in Flint and his non-profit’s efforts to end the global water crisis.

The images are shocking. Brown tap water resembling diarrhoea. Young children’s faces covered in lesions. For over 18 months, the people of Flint, Michigan, complained that their water was contaminated, but their voices fell on deaf ears. Now it’s been declared a federal emergency, with experts estimating that roughly 8,000 to 9,000 children under the age of 6 may have suffered permanent brain damage after being exposed to high levels of lead in the city’s water supply, not to mention countless adults.

Redacted emails released under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act have since revealed that Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration was aware of Flint’s water problems almost a year ago but neglected to act or even inform the public until it was too late. The revelation has led to sharp criticism from Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, with the latter calling for Gov. Snyder to resign.

Matt Damon, the Oscar-nominated actor who, as the co-founder of the successful non-profit Water.org, is something of an expert on safe drinking water and sanitation, has echoed Sen. Sanders in calling for Snyder to step down.

“At the very least he should resign! At the very least,” Damon told The Daily Beast.

“Listen, everybody’s entitled to a fair trial in the United States of America, but that man should get one. And soon. That’s just my personal opinion.”

Damon—along with his fellow Water.org co-founder Gary White—was on hand at the Sundance Film Festival to discuss his charity’s recent “Buy a Lady a Drink” campaign. It’s a team-up with Stella Artois that sheds light on how, among the 663 million people around the world without access to safe water, it’s women who are disproportionately affected. So every hand-designed Stella Artois chalice purchased will provide one person with five years of clean water. Last year, Water.org brought five years of clean water to over 290,000 women in developing countries.

“In terms of the work that we do, to see it happening in Flint, every parent in America feels it on a visceral, deep level, because we ask the question, ‘What if that was my child?’” said Damon.

“It’s unconscionable in Flint, and it’s unconscionable that 663 million people around the world are dealing with that every day in the developing world. Those are the communities we interact with, and that’s the mission of Water.org: to end that suffering for those children, and those parents.”

“We should be outraged about Flint,” added White.

“That shouldn’t be happening in the United States, but it also drives home the point that it shouldn’t be happening anywhere. Flint is the reality for many developing countries around the world.”

That Flint is a majority African-American city where approximately 42% of its people live in poverty has raised questions over whether race played a factor in the city’s slow response to the crisis.

“I’ll tell you what, if the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there would’ve been action,” said Hillary Clinton.

Damon acknowledged that race has played a factor in not only the water crisis in Flint, but also in our attitude toward water crises in developing countries.

My sincere hope for our country and our world is that this greater connectivity is going to lead to a greater empathy and an awakening to the plight of our fellow citizens,” he said.

“These are huge systemic injustices we’re talking about that hopefully everybody is waking up to. The question then is, what do we do about it? It will be interesting to see where we go from here.”

Obama and GOP Unleash “Community Schools” to Replace Parents*

Obama and GOP Unleash “Community Schools” to Replace Parents*

By Alex Newman

Parents, beware — Big Brother is coming for your kids.

Buried deep inside the mammoth “bipartisan” so-called “education” legislation approved last month, dubbed the “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA), is a radical expansion of what the statute refers to as “full-service community schools.”

The controversial institutions, more accurately described as parental replacement centres, seek to oversee every aspect of your child’s life, ranging from their “mental health” and “well being” to nutrition and even dentistry. You are in the crosshairs, too, as the Obama administration defines parents as “equal partners” in child rearing. And those are just some of the many unconstitutional provisions in the bill and beyond that aim to turn government schools into parents, and parents into pariahs.

In short, an increasingly out-of-control Uncle Sam — with support from the leadership of both major political parties — wants to raise your child. And with the support of virtually every education-related special interest group you can think of, the latest federal education statute, passed by the GOP Congress and cheerfully signed as a “miracle” by Obama last month, is among the primary means by which the feds plan to further undermine and attack your role as parents. The implications of the accelerating assaults on families, parental rights, constitutionally limited government, the future of America’s children, and the future of the nation itself cannot be overstated.

Consider, for example, that these community schools are supposed to provide what the legislation refers to as “pipeline services.” The statute defines it like this:

“The term ‘pipeline services’ means a continuum of coordinated supports, services, and opportunities for children from birth through entry into and success in post-secondary education, and career attainment.”

Those “services” must include, at a minimum: “early childhood education;” school and out-of-school programs and “strategies”; support for children’s “transitions”; family “supports,” including “at home”;  career counselling; “Social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports”; “crime prevention and rehabilitation programs”; and much more. In other words, everything that families once provided for children will become the responsibility of “community schools.” All that is missing now is hugs and bedtime stories from Big Brother.

Students will not be the only ones targeted, however. In a section dealing with what the statute describes as “promise neighbourhoods” targeted for additional federally funded “services,” the statute calls for the targeting of everyone with these “pipeline services.” Bureaucrats and institutions, including government schools funded under the scheme, will be charged with providing “social, health, nutrition, and mental health services and supports, for children, family members, and community members.” Family members and community members, in other words, will be targeted for government intervention, up to and including “mental health services.” That means you. Language calling for home visitations appears to have been removed from the bill prior to final passage, but that hardly means it will not be pursued anyway.

Under the statute, a full-service community school is defined as a government-run elementary or secondary school that “participates in a community-based effort to coordinate and integrate educational, developmental, family, health, and other comprehensive services through community-based organizations and public and private partnerships.” The parental replacement centres also must “target” families and children for “services” covering their “academic, physical, social, emotional, health, mental health, and other needs,” according to the statute. The legislation, though, merely expands and purports to authorize and boost funding for various programs on “community schools” that had already been unleashed by Obama’s Education Department, apparently without specific statutory authority to do so.

While parents and voters might be alarmed at the schemes, special-interests, crony capitalists, teachers’ unions, bureaucrats, and other Big Government forces were celebrating the developments.

“The inclusion of the Full-Service Community Schools program in the Every Student Succeeds Act reflects a broader vision for our public schools in ESSA — a vision that recognizes that educators must work in partnership with their communities to help all young people thrive,” exclaimed Martin Blank, director of the Coalition for Community Schools and president of the educational totalitarianism-promoting Institute for Educational Leadership.

The coalition celebrated Representative Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) for their efforts to promote the scheme.

Not even bothering to conceal the Orwellian nature of his pet project, Hoyer bragged about his role in pushing the scheme through Congress, as well as the unprecedented government meddling in family life that it aims to bring about.

“Promoting full-service community schools has been a priority of mine for many years, and this legislation builds on earlier efforts to promote and expand this model, which brings existing critical community services for children and their parents — such as early childhood learning, medical and dental screenings, and career counselling — into schools,” the far-left congressman said in a statement.

Apparently top school bureaucrats also believe their job responsibilities include usurping the role of families and parents in the raising of their own children.

“In a broad ESSA that offers comprehensive reauthorization, we are proud to continue to support the Community Schools model and commend Congress for including the program in the reauthorization,” said Dan Domenech, executive director of AASA, the School Superintendents Association.

“The Full Service Community Schools program encompasses more than just academics — it ensures success beyond the inside of school buildings. Only when children have support for all their needs will schools have a real chance of helping every student master required education concepts and skills.”

Schooling By David DeesBig Labor was delighted, too. American Federation of Teachers boss Randi Weingarten, for instance, could hardly contain her glee about the rapidly expanding role of government schools in child rearing.

“This is a big win for students, families and educators because the wraparound services that are part and parcel of community schools help level the playing field for disadvantaged students and their families,” she gushed in a statement.

“In addition to providing a strong academic program, community schools provide social, emotional and health services needed to educate the whole child and mitigate the impact of poverty. This is particularly important today since more than half of all public school students are poor.”

As community schools increasingly usurp more and more control over more and more children, the Obama administration is forging ahead in other areas, too. The U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services, for example, are currently pursuing a policy in which parents are described as “equal partners” with government in the raising of their own children.

“It is the position of the Departments that all early childhood programs and schools recognize families as equal partners in improving children’s development, learning and wellness across all settings, and over the course of their children’s developmental and educational experiences,” reads the draft policy posted on the federal government’s website.

Beyond community schools, the ESSA legislation also targets Americans for government “education” at earlier and earlier ages. Among other provisions, the ESSA scheme creates a new federal preschool program — entirely unconstitutional — with massive funding levels aimed at bringing more and more children into government care and the earliest possible opportunity.

“We know that the early years can make a huge difference in a child’s life, so this law lays the foundation to expand high-quality pre-schools,” boasted Obama, who called the bill passed by the GOP-controlled Congress a “Christmas miracle.” Since taking office, Obama has been trying to herd more children into government-run programs. And thanks to Republicans, he has now succeeded, as top Obama officials have been boasting.

Also part of the new statute are “21st century community learning centres,” described in the legislation as a scheme to offer students a “broad array of additional services” including everything from “counselling programs” and “health education” to “cultural programs” and “youth development activities.”

The scheme is meant to keep children in government care outside of school hours, too, providing funds for “activities” before and after the school day. Even parents are supposed to be ensnared in the federal program, with the statute calling for the “community learning centres” to provide a “parenting skills program.” Data collection to measure “student success” is a key component of the plot, too.

Critics sounded the alarm. Attorney and activist Jane Robbins with Truth in American Education, for instance, said the “community learning centres” scheme means “schools will be expanded to replace family and church as the centre of every child’s life, offering myriad ‘services’ including mental-health programs.” “Few things should alarm parents more than the prospect of the government’s assessing their child’s mental health and proceeding to fix any problem the government claims to find,” Robbins added, noting that this is precisely what the Republican Congress had imposed on America. U.S. taxpayers will fork over more than $1 billion per year for the “community learning” scheme alone.

The broader ESSA legislation, which was celebrated by the Obama administration as a massive victory for its radical agenda, is also packed with references to “mental health.” In essence, government schools are now expected to seek out any child deemed to have a “mental health” problem — or even those children supposedly potentially at risk of someday developing a “mental health” problem. Teachers are expected to receive training in how to identify such children. Children will be regularly tested and profiled for the purpose. Schools, meanwhile, will be charged with referring such students for “treatment.” The role of parents in the whole process, if there is one, remains unclear. But considering trends in the “mental health” industry, parents should be deeply concerned about these developments.

The ESSA statute, despite being unconstitutional on every level, is going to help the Obama administration and the broader establishment in their goal of “fundamentally transforming” America. In fact, the legislation will be crucial, as it targets the minds of children for radical brainwashing and indoctrination. Top Obama education bureaucrats have already made their Orwellian agenda clear. Recently retired Education Secretary Arne Duncan, for instance, has boasted of using government schools to transform your children into “green citizens” with UNESCO as his “global partner.” He has also called for government boarding schools that would keep some children 24/7.

Americans concerned about the future of their children, liberties, self-government, Constitution, and even nation, must resist the agenda and protect their own children from a federal government gone mad. Withdrawing from government schools and replacing members of Congress who violated their oath of office and the Constitution to foist ESSA on America would be a good start.
