DNA Study Finds Ice Age Europeans Predominantly Had Dark Complexions and Brown Eyes*

Reconstruction of an Ice Age woman based on remains from Abri Pataud in France

A new study has revealed previously unknown details about early Ice Age Europeans, including fluctuations in their eye colour and complexion. The research paints a picture of a dramatic history of mass migrations spanning thousands of years.

A paper titled “The genetic history of Ice Age Europe,” was published by Nature Journal on May 2. Researchers used new techniques to analyze 51 samples of degraded DNA from ancient remains to shed light on over some 40,000 years of prehistory.

The study concluded that the genes of Ice Age Europeans show prevailing dark complexions and brown eyes. The evidence also revealed that blue eyes appeared 14,000 years ago at most, while pale skin spread across the continent some 7,000 years ago. Both were brought in by migration from the Near East.

Another big find was that different groups of Europeans were descended from a single founder population between 37,000 years ago and 14,000 years ago. During the period, Neanderthal ancestry in Europeans was in decline, likely due to natural selection.

“Neanderthal DNA is slightly toxic to modern humans,” said co-author professor David Reich, from Harvard Medical School in Boston, US.

Modern-day Europeans can trace their lineage back to the founding population known as Aurignacian culture. According to the study, this group of humans lived in northwest Europe 35,000 years ago. However, Aurignacian culture was displaced when another group of early humans, the Gravettian culture, migrated to Europe 33,000 years ago.

Nevertheless, around 19,000 years ago when the Ice Age peaked, people related to the Aurignacians re-migrated and expanded across Europe from the southwest, which is present-day Spain.

Another massive migration uncovered by the researchers took place 14,000 years ago, when ice sheets had already melted and populations from the southeast, such as from Turkey and Greece, migrated to Europe, again displacing Aurignacian culture.

Professor Reich explained: “We see a new population turnover in Europe, and this time it seems to be from the east, not the west.”

“[W]hat we see is a population history that is no less complicated than that in the last 7,000 years, with multiple episodes of population replacement and immigration on a vast and dramatic scale, at a time when the climate was changing dramatically,” Reich added.

Two-Thirds of Indiana’s Polling Places Close Ahead of Election Day*

Two-Thirds of Indiana’s Polling Places Close Ahead of Election Day*

By Alice Ollstein

Mary Lyons hands out registration forms as voters line-up to cast their early votes at the City-County Building in Indianapolis.

Some 4 million Indiana voters are expected to head to the polls today in record numbers, as the state takes an unexpected spotlight in a primary where candidates in both parties are fighting it out until the bitter end. The state has already seen extremely high turnout in early voting; over 50 percent more people have cast early ballots than when Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama went head-to-head in 2008.

Yet several factors could cause chaos at the polls on Tuesday. The state is only keeping sites open until 6 p.m., which could pose difficulties for people who cannot leave work until 5 p.m. or later. Many other states keep their polls open until at least 8 p.m. And unlike some other states, Indiana has no laws requiring employers to give their workers time off in order to vote.

Indiana also has an open primary, in which registered Independents can vote for any candidate they choose, which may lead to even higher turnout and longer lines. Some counties already had lines at the door when the polls opened at 6 a.m.

Yet despite the anticipation of long waits, some counties in Indiana have also followed Arizona’s lead in slashing the number of polling places. In Wells County, which has the highest turnout rate in the state, officials cut the number of available voting sites from 15 to five.

Though most issues are expected at the end of the day, when people try to vote after work, some problems have already popped up. A polling place in South Bend, Indiana was shut down for a little over an hour during the morning rush after police received a call about a suicidal individual nearby.

A polling place in Marion County opened late because a poll worker couldn’t find childcare. Voting equipment glitches were reported in Rush County, Hancock County, and Johnson County.

Hancock County is also trying to sort out errors by poll workers who “got ahead of themselves and did things in the wrong order.”

Yet Chris Melody Fields with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, who is fielding calls from Indiana voters, told ThinkProgress she has heard of “no systematic problems yet.”

She did caution voters, however, to not be turned away if poll workers say they don’t appear on the rolls.

“Always ask for the inactive list or supplemental poll book,” she advised.

“If you haven’t voted in four years, you may have been put on one of those lists, and you can still cast a regular ballot.”

Comment: but what are they voting for….

Three Nuclear Disasters Unfolding in U.S.*

Three Nuclear Disasters Unfolding in U.S.*

By Brianna Acuesta
The debate over which bathroom transgender people can use has been taking over the Internet and our social conversations for weeks now, and it’s getting a bit ridiculous. Transgender people have always used the bathroom that they feel comfortable with, whether it’s the bathroom that belongs to the sex they were born with or not, and there have been no problems.

In the heat of this debate, Americans are not only divided on the issue but collectively distracted from bigger, more important issues, such as the fact that there are three nuclear disasters occurring throughout the nation that have been getting no media attention.

One major disaster that will soon come to head all started with a fire at the Bridgeton Landfill in Missouri that has been burning for five years. Despite this extremely long length of time, authorities say that this fire is nowhere close to being contained. What’s more is that St. Louis County officials have reported that they have an emergency plan in place because the fire is closing in on nuclear waste dump.

It’s been an entire year since the county first became concerned that the fire would reach the West Lake Landfill, which is home to piles of leftover nuclear waste from the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. Although the EPA has had control over the site since 1990, no significant effort has been made to clear the harmful waste.

The EPA announced last December that it planned on building a wall to prevent the fire from ever reaching the hazardous materials, but the project was supposed to take a year to complete and residents are furious at this slow-moving “effort” to stop a natural disaster. The project has not yet begun and was just barely finalized last week.

Additionally, there are two nuclear reactors in the U.S. that have reportedly been leaking for months.

One of the nuclear power plants in Turkey Point, which is in Florida, was found to have been leaking polluted water into Miami-Dade County’s Biscayne Bay. The pollution is affecting the bay’s surface waters and will likely have a damaging effect on the already-fragile ecosystem.

This pollution is also said to be affecting the drinking water, as huge saltwater plumes coming from the power plants have invaded the groundwater.

Laura Reynolds, an environmental consultant that is working towards filing a lawsuit against the Turkey Point power plants said,

“We now know exactly where the pollution is coming from, and we have a tracer that shows it’s in the national park. We are worried about the marine life there and the future of Biscayne Bay.”

Meanwhile, another nuclear reactor in New York has been leaking ever since Americans greeted the New Year, when workers accidentally spilled contaminated water that contained the radioactive hydrogen isotope tritium. The spill caused a massive spike in radiation in the groundwater wells, and one well even saw an increase in radioactivity of about 65,000%.

Credit: Awareness Act

This is extremely concerning, but when you consider that this is the ninth reported spill in the last year, four of which were so severe that the plant had to be closed, it becomes clear that something needs to change. The residents living close to these leaks and fires are alarmed to say the least, but utility companies and government agencies (whose hands are in the pockets of the utility companies) have continued to downplay the damaging effects of exposure to radiation.

Some Americans have suspected that the passing of North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” which prohibits transgender people from using the bathroom associated with the gender they identify with, has been a ploy to distract Americans from real issues and they may be right. While there are other important matters occurring daily throughout the world, these three nuclear disasters are being underreported on in an effort to keep the public from turning their attention to these dangerous problems.

A New Digital Cash System was Just Unveiled at a Secret Meeting for Bankers In New York*

A New Digital Cash System was Just Unveiled at a Secret Meeting for Bankers In New York*

By Michael Snyder

Last month, a “secret meeting” that involved more than 100 executives from some of the biggest financial institutions in the United States was held in New York City.  During this “secret meeting“, a company known as “Chainunveiled a technology that transforms U.S. dollars into “pure digital assets”.  Reportedly, there were representatives from Nasdaq, Citigroup, Visa, Fidelity, Fiserv and Pfizer in the room, and Chain also claims to be partnering with Capital One, State Street, and First Data.  This “revolutionary” technology is intended to completely change the way that we use money, and it would represent a major step toward a cashless society.  But if this new digital cash system is going to be so good for society, why was it unveiled during a secret meeting for Wall Street bankers?  Is there something more going on here than we are being told?

None of us probably would have ever heard about this secret meeting if it was not for a report in Bloomberg.  The following comes from their article entitled “Inside the Secret Meeting Where Wall Street Tested Digital Cash“…

“On a recent Monday in April, more than 100 executives from some of the world’s largest financial institutions gathered for a private meeting at the Times Square office of Nasdaq Inc. They weren’t there to just talk about blockchain, the new technology some predict will transform finance, but to build and experiment with the software.

By the end of the day, they had seen something revolutionary: U.S. dollars transformed into pure digital assets, able to be used to execute and settle a trade instantly. That’s the promise of a blockchain, where the cumbersome and error-prone system that takes days to move money across town or around the world is replaced with almost instant certainty.”

So it is not just Michael Snyder from The Economic Collapse Blog that is referring to this gathering as a “secret meeting”.  This is actually how it was described by Bloomberg.  And I think that there is a very good reason why this meeting was held in secret, because many in the general public would definitely be alarmed by this giant step toward a cashless society.  Here is more on this new system from Bloomberg

“While cash in a bank account moves electronically all the time today, there’s a distinction between that system and what it means to say money is digital. Electronic payments are really just messages that cash needs to move from one account to another, and this reconciliation is what adds time to the payments process. For customers, moving money between accounts can take days as banks wait for confirmations. Digital dollars, however, are pre-loaded into a system like a blockchain. From there, they can be swapped immediately for an asset.

“Instead of a record or message being moved, it’s the actual asset,” Ludwin said. “The payment and the settlement become the same thing.”

Why this is so alarming is because we are seeing other major moves toward a cashless system all over the planet.  In Sweden, 95 percent of all retail transactions are already cashless, and ATM machines are being removed by the hundreds.  In Denmark, government officials actually have a stated goal of “eradicating cash” by the year 2030.  And in Norway, the biggest bank in the country has publicly called for the complete elimination of all cash.

Other nations in Europe have already banned cash transactions over a certain amount. Here are just a couple of examples

“As I have written about previously, cash transactions of more than 2,500 euros have already been banned in Spain, and France and Italy have both banned all cash transactions of more than 1,000 euros.

Little by little, cash is being eradicated, and what we have seen so far is just the beginning. 417 billion cashless transactions were conducted in 2014, and the final number for 2015 is projected to be much higher.”

The global push toward a cashless society is only going to intensify, because banks and governments both tend to really like the idea of such a system.

Banks really like the concept of a cashless society because it would force everyone to be their customers.  There would be no more hiding cash in a mattress at home or trying to pay all of your bills with paper money.  Under a cashless system, we would all be dependent on the banks, and they would make lots of money whenever we swiped our cards or our “chips” were scanned.

Governments see a lot of advantages in a cashless society as well.  They tell us that they would be able to crack down on drug dealers, tax evaders, terrorists and money launderers, but the truth is that it would enable them to watch, track, monitor and control virtually all of our financial transactions.  Our lives would become open books to the government, and financial privacy would be a thing of the past.

In addition, the potential for tyranny would be absolutely off the charts.

Just imagine a world where the government could serve as the gatekeeper for who is allowed to use the cashless system and who is not.  They could require that we all submit to some sort of government-issued form of identification before being permitted to operate within the system, or it is even conceivable that a loyalty oath would be required.

Of course if you did not submit to their demands, you could not buy, sell, open a bank account or get a job without access to the cashless system.

Hopefully people can understand where this is going.  Paper money is a very important component of our freedom, and if it is taken away from us that will open the door for all sorts of abuse.

Even now, cash is slowly being “criminalized” in America.  For example, if cash is used to pay for a hotel room that is considered by federal authorities to be “suspicious activity” that should be reported to the government.  Of course it isn’t against the law to pay your hotel bill in cash just yet, but according to the government it is something that “terrorists” do so it needs to be closely watched.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of imagination to see where all of this is going.  And for those of us that understand what time it is, this is a clear indication that it is getting late in the game.

Semih Bulut threw 30,000 Turkish Lira from a top-floor balcony after staging an armed robbery on a bank in Istanbul’s Kumkap neighbourhood on April 27.

Protester Robs Bank , Throws Money to Crowd

A man identified as Semih Bulut scattered 30,000 Turkish Liras from a top-floor balcony after staging an armed robbery on a bank in Istanbul’s Kumkap neighborhood on April 27.

The robbery took place in the afternoon. Bulut entered the bank located on the Çiftegelinler Street of the Kumkap neighbourhood with a pump action rifle. Forcing the clerk to open the bank vaults and taking out 30,000 lira before seeing police teams arriving at the scene, and fleeing to the top floor of the bank’s building.

He then fired rifle shots into the air as he scattered bills onto the street below from the balcony.

“I wanted to express myself with the President. My aim was to make him aware of this situation,” he said.

Scattered bills worth 30,000 Turkish Liras from a top-floor balcony after staging an armed robbery on a bank in Istanbul’s Kumkap neighborhood on April 27.

Police teams took security measures on the street and sent a “Nationally trained negotiator” to the scene to communicate with the burglar. After four hours of negotiations, Bulut surrendered himself to police.

According to claims by locals, the building where the incident took place was sold to the bank by Bulut’s father Cuma Bulut around four years ago. Believing that the sale was unjust, the elder Bulut had allegedly attempted to rob the same bank previously.

After surrendering, Bulut was taken to a police station for questioning and local police officers picked up the bills he had scattered around.

Local police say they are still looking for 4,900 lira.

According to Bulut’s statement the theft was perpetrated because he was ”outraged”, according to neighbours, four years ago, his father was the owner of the building from which the subject threw the money, however, he sold the property at a price that Semih considered was unfair .

The video posted on YouTube shows Semih takes shots in the air screams and throws some of the $ 30,000 he had stolen just minutes earlier .

Eventually the Turkish police would collect most of the thrown money and the negotiator would talk with the man, who finally surrendered to authorities.

Quaker Oats Sued for Glyphosate in ‘100% Natural’ Products*

Quaker Oats Sued for Glyphosate in ‘100% Natural’ Products*

Quaker Oats is facing a new lawsuit following private tests that found trace amounts of the herbicide glyphosate on the company’s products. Thus, plaintiffs argue, the company employs false marketing tactics in claiming its products are “100% natural.”

lawsuit seeking class-action status was filed in Federal District Courts in New York and California claiming that statements made by Quakers Oats about its products are misleading.

“Defendant aggressively advertises and promotes its oatmeal products as ‘100% Natural,’ and claims its oats are grown using ‘eco-friendly’ methods that pose ‘less risk of pollutants and groundwater pollution,'” the lawsuit says. “These claims are false, deceptive, and misleading.”

The suit says Quaker Oats also uses the herbicide glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer that was deemed a “probable” human carcinogen by the World Health Organization last year, to dry its oats prior to harvest.

“There is nothing unlawful about Quaker Oats’ growing and processing methods,” the suit reads.

“What is unlawful is Quaker’s claim that Quaker Oats is something that it is not in order to capitalize on growing consumer demand for healthful, natural products.”

Quaker Oats responded to the suit saying that glyphosate, a common biocide used by farmers in the U.S. and around the world, is not applied to oats during the milling process, and that its oats undergo a rigorous cleansing process.

“Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are trace amounts and significantly below any limits which have been set by the [US Environmental Protection Agency] as safe for human consumption,” the company said in a statement, as reported by the New York Times.

The EPA has set the safe level of average individual daily intake of glyphosate at 1.75 milligrams per kilogram, while the European Union’s level is 0.3 milligrams per kilogram, the NY Times reported.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys, of the Richman Law Group, paid for tests at an independent lab in California, which involved liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The test was done only on Quaker Oats’ Quick 1-Minute product. The lawsuit, though, includes other products in its claims, including Quaker Oats Old-Fashioned and Quaker Steel Cut Oats.

The tests found glyphosate on Quaker Oats products at a level of 1.18 parts per million, which is about 4% of the 30 parts per million allowed on cereal grains by the EPA.

The use of glyphosate in herbicides has increased by more than 250 times in the United States in the last 40 years, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Long-term exposure to glyphosate has been linked to kidney and liver damage, as well as cellular and genetic diseases. Monsanto and defenders of glyphosate use called the World Health Organization’s carcinogen classification too dramatic and have pointed to assurances that the chemical is, indeed, safe.

Last month, the European Parliament approved the seven-year re-authorization of glyphosate, though it recommended the chemical should be used only by professionals and not in public places.

In September, Monsanto was sued by two agricultural workers in the U.S. who claimed Roundup had caused their cancers.

In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would begin to test some products – including milk, corn, eggs, and soybeans, among possible others in the future – for glyphosate.

In 2013, the EPA approved Monsanto’s plea for use of increased levels of glyphosate, which was first created in 1970 by Monsanto. In 1974, the company began selling the chemical in Roundup, which has become a top bioicide for both farming, especially regarding genetically-engineered crops, and home and garden uses.

Israeli lawmaker Accuses Tel Aviv of “ethnic cleansing” the West Bank*

Israeli lawmaker Accuses Tel Aviv of “ethnic cleansing” the West Bank*

An Israeli lawmaker has accused Tel Aviv of committing “ethnic cleansing” against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank amid a rise in the demolition of Palestinian houses and buildings in the area.

Dov Khenin told Sky News on Sunday that Israel’s demolition of Arab structures in the so-called Area C of the West Bank is an attempt to clear the area and prepare it for Israelis to settle there in the future.

Area C, which is under full Israeli control, covers 360,000 hectares (890,000 acres) of land, equal to 60% of the West Bank’s area.

The 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians divides the West Bank into Area A under full Palestinian control, Area B under shared Israeli-Palestinian control and Area C.

Israel is committing an “ethnic cleansing in a very sophisticated way” in the occupied West Bank, Khenin said.

Israeli MP Dov Khenin (photo by AFP)

Israeli authorities rejected Khenin’s remarks and claimed that the demolitions are taking place because the structures being destroyed do not have building permits.

U.N. fieldworker Matthew Ryder has said, though, that getting approvals for buildings is “virtually impossible” for the Palestinians.

“Israel’s own figures show that, between 2010 and 2014, Palestinians in the area that Israel controls only managed to obtain 33 permits for building on their land — that’s something like 1.5% of the permits that are actually granted,” Ryder said.

Recent figures released by the United Nations show the Israeli military has more than tripled the pace of the demolitions of Palestinian structures in the occupied West Bank over the past three months.

The world body said the average demolitions have risen to 165 on the monthly basis since January.

The demolitions have raised alarm among world diplomats and human rights groups over what they regard as the Tel Aviv regime’s continued violation of international law.

Over half a million Israelis live in more than 230 illegal settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, including East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

All Israeli settlements are illegal under the international law. However, Tel Aviv has defied calls to stop the settlement expansions in the occupied territories.
