Israeli Jets Pound Gaza in Worst Violence since 2014 War*

Israeli Jets Pound Gaza in Worst Violence since 2014 War*

Israeli jets struck four positions in Gaza on Thursday in the worst flaring of violence since the 2014 war, and as reports emerged that a captured Hamas militant was providing information on the group’s tunnel network.

“In response to the ongoing attacks against Israeli forces, IAF (Israeli airforce) aircraft targeted four Hamas military posts in the southern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement.

According to the army, Hamas had earlier fired “more than five mortar rounds at forces during operational activities adjacent to the security fence with the Gaza Strip.”

Local sources told the Ma’an News Agency that Israeli F-16 jets launched several rockets on Gaza late on Thursday afternoon, hitting agricultural land in the Abu al-Rus area in eastern Rafah.

Earlier in the day four Palestinians, including three children, were injured earlier when Israeli forces carried out several air strikes on the strip.

One attack hit a metal workshop in the al-Zaytoun area southeast of Gaza City.

Hamas has accused Israeli forces of encroaching into Gazan territory.

Army spokesman Peter Lerner said in the last 24 hours “we have had at least six incidents where Hamas has fired at IDF activities,” referring to the Israeli army.

He said that Israel had responded in what was the first direct confrontation between with Hamas fighters since the war of 2014, which killed thousands of Gazans.

Clashes between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces were continuing east of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip Thursday afternoon, security sources and witnesses said.

Israel’s military said on Twitter that its forces had “responded with tank fire” to mortar rounds fired from the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas tunnels unearthed

On Thursday it was revealed by the Shin Bet intelligence agency that Israel had arrested a reported Hamas member, Mohammed Atawa, who had given the agency information about Hamas tunnels, digging sites and tunnel shafts.

The tunnels, used by operatives fighting within Israeli territory, have been targeted by both Israel and Egypt for demolition.

The Israeli army said that a major target of the strikes were suspected infiltration tunnels under the border like those whose destruction it cited as one of the principal achievements of the 2014 conflict.

Gaza has been devastated by three conflicts between Israel and its Hamas rulers and other Palestinian factions since 2008, and reconstruction has been painstakingly slow amid an Israeli blockade on all imports that could have military purposes.

Over the past two days, the Israeli army says that its soldiers, operating along the fence that tightly encloses the territory, have been repeatedly targeted from inside Gaza.

But army spokesman Lerner said Israel had “no interest in escalation whatsoever”.

Extreme Voter Suppression in New York and Arizona – Demands for Recount*

Extreme Voter Suppression in New York and Arizona – Demands for Recount*

Thousands of New Yorkers experienced problems at the polls which they’ve attributed to voter suppression, with the number of those barred from voting altogether being referred to as “more than alarming,” and in Arizona a lawsuit is now underway “to reverse Arizona’s culture of voter disenfranchisement prior to the 2016 election.” Many are demanding a recount of 5% of paper ballots in New York to determine the truth as to who won, and whether or not you live in New York, here’s why you should take to the media or write your State Representatives and demand a recount as well.

As reported in the New York Times, Republicans are more than aware that their prospects go up as the number of voters go down, and Conservatives are aware of this as well. It’s the reason why they intensify their “efforts to make it harder to vote, or to eliminate large numbers of people from political representation entirely.”

New Yorkers reported malfunctioning voting machines, polling places that opened later than advertised, and many voter’s names didn’t appear in registration lists, or they were removed completely. 126000 Brooklyn Democrats were removed from the list of registered voters, and Democrats were targeted in Arizona as well.

Among the defendants in the Arizona suit are Arizona Secretary of State, Michele Reagan, and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and Maricopa County Recorder, Helen Purcell, who stated that the Republican election officials who decided to reduce polling locations by 70% in the State simply, “never considered the impact these actions would have on black, Hispanic or Native American communities.” In total, there were only 60 polling places in Phoenix, a city with 1.3 million voters.

Another form of voter suppression has been the voter ID laws that became popular in quite a few States, probably none more than Texas. Voter ID laws also tend to inadvertently have a higher impact on African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and low income individuals, many of which are Democrats.

Politicians argue for voter ID laws with the claim that they are meant to prevent Voter Impersonation Fraud, but are they? In a statement from co-sponsor of Texas’s ID law, State Representative Debbie Riddle (R-TX):

The very freedom of our nation is based on the integrity of our ballot box, and if things are so lax that fraudulent voting can occur, that means your vote can be stolen.” She continues, “…and simply showing identification is not too much to ask.”

For some people, it is too much to ask though, especially when States like Pennsylvania were requiring citizens to provide not only an ID, but an original birth certificate, an original social security card, and in one woman’s case, her husband’s death certificate too. But the fact is, Voter Impersonation Fraud is literally not a problem in the first place. According to researchers, from 2000 to 2013 there were 31 incidents in the entire country out of more than 1 billion ballots cast (source in video below).

Now get ready to go from irritated to pissed-off: Representative Debbie Riddle, Mrs. “Integrity,” was later caught on camera at the Legislature (video below) committing Voter Impersonation Fraud by casting votes for other representatives who were absent, and apparently this is a common practice amongst politicians everywhere. They refer to it as “ghost voting,” and the issue has arisen in the media before. In a report from 2009:

There was a whole lot of [ghost voting] going on. It’s not perceived as a problem to us as much as it is a people’s perception about us,” said Representative Harold Dutton, D-Houston.

Some might consider it an issue when people who are deceased are somehow casting votes, as happened with the late Representative, Larry Evans (D-TX) who died on August 7, 1991, and later that day managed to cast three votes.

Politicians claim this practice is done out of necessity, however that argument seems rather weak. When later confronted, Debbie Riddle gave this explanation for her and her colleague’s actions:

We have a lot of votes, we have a lot of amendments, and there’s times where we don’t break for lunch, and we don’t break for dinner, we don’t have bathroom breaks…”

So some citizens are forced to produce three or more forms of ID to make one vote, this is after standing in line after work for two- to five-hours at the only voting booth in a however-many-mile radius, all because there have been 31 cases of voter fraud in a 13-year period. And that’s if their name hasn’t inexplicably been removed from the registered voter list for various bunk reasons. Meanwhile, Representatives can cast as many votes for their colleagues as they like—dead or not—because they don’t often get bathroom breaks. Only in America.

While Twitter has been ablaze with citizens claiming voter suppression, those whose candidate won claim the rest are sore losers and “conspiracy theorists,” which has become every critic’s favourite term when they encounter an issue they don’t like. However, as pointed out by Tony Brasunas at the Huffington Post, Hillary’s only two wins over the last month, which were New York and Arizona, came in States that had numerous voting problems and are now under investigation. Kind of hard to pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

Vote tampering is serious, and it is being stressed that citizens need to look at the reality of the situation rather than turning their backs because they’re happy their candidate got the vote. In the name of actual integrity, all candidates, including both Clinton and Sanders, should be calling for an entire re-vote, however even a manual recount of paper ballots in both New York and Arizona would determine whether or not machines were hacked, according to sources.

The fact that mistakes have been made on voting ballots and voter registration should automatically merit a re-vote, and yet Hillary’s accepting this victory as though it were an actual win. Meanwhile, citizens continue to grumble about their sham-of-a-voting-system, acknowledging that elections in America are rigged, but then they accept it, like it’s just the way things are.

Voting is the only direct way the people of America have a voice or can express an opinion, and it’s the only way they have an influence on the choices that impact their lives every day. Since Bush’s rigged elections, it seems that voice is rapidly being crushed. Some might consider this an act of civil war on the American people.

We are urging citizens; take to the media, take to the streets if you must, figure out who your State Representatives are, write them, and tell them you’re pissed off. Enough is enough. With every election comes scandal, and our nation has become the joke of the world. Whether or not Sanders becomes the next president, a revolution is long overdue.

From Europe the Islamophobic Soldiers of Odin’s Arrive in the U.S.*

About a dozen people dressed in all black gathered on a street corner in a Denver suburb to conduct their first “patrol.” It was March 19, just weeks after this group of vigilantes began organizing on social media. In a video posted online, the crew of mostly young men starts to roam the streets, on the lookout for illegal immigrants and refugees—who they say are out to rape and assault their women.

They call themselves The Soldiers of Odin, and they’ve just arrived in the United States.

Members of the organization—which gets its cryptic name from the Norse god Odin—have been patrolling the streets of European cities since last year, in response to a wave of mostly Muslim asylum-seekers coming through the EU’s porous borders. But, the anti-immigrant group has now spread to the U.S. and is growing like wildfire—with the help of a powerful social-media recruitment program, Soldiers of Odin has now established U.S. chapters in at least 42 states since February.

“[Soldiers of Odin] bring together white supremacists, anti-government groups, anti-immigrant folks,” said Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow with the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism.

This is a nasty group of people.”

The official Soldiers of Odin USA Facebook page, which started in February, boasts a membership of more than 4,000 people. The page is private, and the movement’s leaders have to accept a person into the group—just anyone can’t just click a “like” button and become a Soldier of Odin. As Pitcavage notes, this doesn’t necessarily mean there are 4,000 vigilantes actively “patrolling” U.S. cities; some are just “cheerleaders” of the movement, he said. But the group definitely has a presence that lives beyond cyberspace.

Their mission can be summed up in a message posted on that private Facebook page where it states that the Soldiers of Odin USA “stands in opposition to the hoards [sic] of ‘refugees’ that have invaded Europe and will soon be coming to America, bringing massive waves of rape and crime with them… We say no!”

Chevy Sevier is a leader in the group and holds the title of Southwest Regional Brass. He told Vocativ that despite the organization’s bad reputation as a violent, neo-Nazi-esque lynch mob in Europe and Canada, the group is neither violent nor racist.

“The accusation that we are a Nazi or any other racially motivated hate group is not true,” he said.

“We are simply Americans preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.”

Sevier credits the growth of the Soldiers of Odin in the U.S. to “current events both foreign and domestic.” Things like President Barack Obama’s executive action to give millions of undocumented immigrants citizenship, and the federal government’s acceptance of Muslim Syrian immigrants have sent thousand of people to groups like Sevier’s over the last year. According to the Southwest Commander,

“We have a multitude of different religions, races, and financial backgrounds.”

Despite his assertion that the organization is peaceful, some of its members have used the group’s social media accounts to express the message with more vitriol than what’s laid out in the Soldier of Odin’s bylaws.

“These Africans are a bunch of spoiled brats contaminating clean communities. Call them out. Kick some ass. Spread the message. America needs to get tough,” reads one Facebook comment cited by the Anti-Defamation League in a scathing report provided exclusively to Vocativ that will be made public on Thursday. In another, a member wrote “hate isn’t a strong enough word for what I feel for these sand monkeys.” The ADL’s report cites a litany of racist Facebook comments that target those in the black, Jewish and Muslim community.

It’s not just the rhetoric, however, that worries civil rights advocates. It’s also the group’s breakout growth on social media and the types people who are joining the movement.

As noted, Soldiers of Odin officials claim publicly that the group is not a racist organization. But several of its U.S. members are in Ku Klux Klan organizations and other racist groups like the National Socialist Movement, the country’s premier band of neo-Nazis, and racist skinhead groups. One member, Jacob Laskey, was convicted of a federal hate crime in 2006 for an attack on an Oregon synagogue, according to the ADL’s report. Several leaders of the Soldiers of Odin did not respond to multiple requests from Vocativ for interviews.

The ADL’s Pitcavage, who authored the report, credits some of the group’s success in the U.S. to its ability to stay under the radar of most media outlets, a luxury their Canadian and European counterparts have not enjoyed. The vigilante activities carried out by the Soldiers of Odin have been well documented in Europe since the group’s inception in late 2015. According to the ADL, more “patrols” like the one near Denver are on the horizon.

Pitcavage likens the organization to the Minuteman Project of the mid-2000s, a comparison that some overseas news outlets have seized on with headlines like “Minutemen from Abroad: Refugee Vigilantes Patrol Swedish City.” Minutemen were anti-immigrant “militias” who mounted armed patrols at the U.S.-Mexico border in search of undocumented immigrants and drug smugglers. One of the group’s more infamous members is on Arizona’s death row for the 2009 murders of a Hispanic man and his nine-year-old daughter during a home invasion. Shawna Forde and her accomplices thought the man was a drug smuggler and planned to rob him and use the proceeds to fund her paramilitary organization. No drugs were found in the victims’ home. Another prominent Minuteman who made headlines was J. T. Ready, a former neo-Nazi who murdered his girlfriend, her two daughters and one of the daughters’ boyfriends before killing himself. One of the victims was just 15-months old.

Whether the Soldiers of Odin pose a threat similar to the Minutemen remains to be seen. But there is no shortage of violent language among its members. In one of the group’s propaganda graphics featured in Pitcavage’s report states,

“We are not a nice, polite group that will do nothing but report outrages to the police. The police are overworked as it is, and ham-strung by the dictates of law. WE ARE NOT. We will BEAT THE LIVING SHIT out of any [refugees] we catch raping American women and terrorizing American citizens. If you have that kind of balls, then join. If not, then go away.”

Recruitment efforts have been more successful in some states than others, according to Pitcavage’s research. California, for example, has seen membership to the state chapter’s Facebook group go from 72 in early March to 241 in early May. North Carolina’s chapter went from 57 to 157 over that same period. Florida, on the other hand, has actually seen a decrease in membership from 77 in March to 65 in May. The decrease, Pitcavage said, may be due to purges or infighting within the group, which is common among white nationalist organizations.

“Whether or not the Soldiers of Odin can achieve that level of attention and notoriety [given to the Minutemen] is an open question,” the report concludes, “but the mere fact that this intolerant and prejudiced group has a significant and growing foothold in the United States is itself disturbing enough.”
