European Refugee Camps in Syria During WWII*

European Refugee Camps in Syria During WWII*

The whole world is aware that Europe is buckled under the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, with millions of people fleeing civil war and oppression in the Middle East, North Africa, and Western Asia, and landing on the continent’s shores by land and by sea. The U.N. estimates that more people have been displaced than at any time since the Second World War — there are close to 60 million war refugees, according to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

While there is no denying the fact that the current humanitarian crisis is the worst refugee crisis of our generation; with continuous comparison to World War II, it is imperative that we share a small yet important fact with you: at the height of World War II, the Middle East Relief and Refugee Administration (MERRA) operated camps in Syria, Egypt and Palestine, where tens of thousands of people from across Europe sought refuge.

Yes, you read it right. Refugees crossed the same passageways [which the Syrians, the Africans, and the Asians are taking to reach Europe TODAY] 70 years ago — BUT they were the Europeans (largely from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia) trying to find solace in the Middle East.

How The Refugees Entered The Camps:

According to the International Social Service records, refugees from Europe had to register at one of several camps in Egypt, Palestine and Syria and obtain camp-issued identification cards, which contained their full name, gender, marital status, passport number, and their educational and work history.

After registration, they had to undergo a refugee medical examination at makeshift hospital facilities — where they took off their clothes, their shoes and were washed until officials believed they were sufficiently disinfected. When they were declared fit enough to join the refugee camp, they were divided into living quarters for families, unaccompanied children, single men and single women.

How They Survived:

Refugees in MERRA camps received a half portion of Army rations each day; sometimes supplemented with foods that reflected refugees’ national customs and religious practices. ‘Rich’ refugees could buy beans, olives, oil, fruit, tea, coffee and other staples from camp canteens. On the rare occasion, during supervised visits to local shops, they could buy soap, razor blades, pencils, paper, stamps and other items. Some camps provided space for refugees to prepare meals; one camp in Aleppo reserved a room for women so they could make macaroni with flour, which they received from camp officials.

How They Found Work & Developed Skills:

Some, but not all, camps required refugees to work — though they were not forced to earn to make ends meet. GlobalPost reports:

“In Aleppo, refugees were encouraged, but not required, to work as cooks, cleaners and cobblers. Labour wasn’t mandatory in Nuseirat, either, but camp officials did try to create opportunities for refugees to use their skills in carpentry, painting, shoe making and wool spinning so that they could stay occupied and earn a little income from other refugees who could afford their services. At Moses Wells, all able-bodied, physically fit refugees worked as shopkeepers, cleaners, seamstresses, apprentices, masons, carpenters or plumbers, while “exceptionally qualified persons” served as school masters or labour foremen. Women performed additional domestic work like sewing, laundry, and preparing food on top of any other work they had.”

Croatian and Yugoslavian refugees work as cobblers at a refugee camp in El Shatt, Egypt during World War II.

How They Acquired Knowledge:

Margaret G. Arnstein, a prominent nurse practitioner notes that students in a few camps at El Shatt and Moses Wells were taught practical nursing, anatomy, physiology, first aid, obstetrics, paediatrics, as well as the military rules and regulations that governed wartime refugee camps.

How They Entertained Themselves:

In their free time, the men played handball, football and socialized over cigarettes, beer and wine in camp canteens. In their free time, children played with swings, slides and seesaws.

With pencils in short supply, young children at a World War II refugee camp in Tolumbat, Egypt write the words “naša škola” or “our school” into the sand

How They Prepared For A Brighter Future:

Education was a crucial part of camp routines. GlobalPost writes:

“Classrooms in Middle Eastern refugee camps had too few teachers and too many students, inadequate supplies and suffered from overcrowding. Yet not all the camps were so hard pressed. In Nuseirat, for example, a refugee who was an artist completed many paintings and posted them all over the walls of a kindergarten inside the camp, making the classrooms “bright and cheerful.” Well-to-do people in the area donated toys, games, and dolls to the kindergarten, causing a camp official to remark that it “compared favourably with many in the United States.”

Voters in Oregon Defeat Nestlé’s Attempt to Privatize Their Water*

Voters in Oregon Defeat Nestlé’s Attempt to Privatize Their Water*

By Alexis Bonogofsky

Blue yard signs bearing the words “Yes on 14-55: Our Water, Our Future” dotted lawns throughout Hood River County, Oregon, in the run-up to the primary election held on May 17. Just as many of these signs appeared to share a lawn with a Cruz or Trump yard sign as with a Clinton or Sanders sign.

The issue that brought conservatives and progressives together in this way was clear-cut: keeping Nestlé Waters North America from building a water bottling plant and extracting over 118 million gallons annually from a spring in a small, rural community 45 miles east of Portland.

When Primary Day came, Oregon voters in Hood River County passed a first-of-its-kind ballot measure that bans the production and transportation of large-scale commercial bottled water within the county. The measure succeeded by an overwhelming majority of voters — 68.8% voted in favour — and effectively ended Nestlé’s attempts to operate within the community.

“We couldn’t have done it without bipartisan support,” said Julia DeGraw, the senior northwest organizer with Food and Water Watch, who has been working on this issue for the past seven years.

“This is the definition of bipartisan support.”

The passage of the ballot initiative is a huge blow to Nestlé and comes at a time when the bottled water industry is coming under more and more scrutiny from the public as the nation experiences severe drought and increasing water scarcity.

“It Was Our Moment”

Since 2008, Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has attempted to make Cascade Locks, Oregon, the location of its first water extraction and bottling plant in the Northwest. Nestlé already taps into 50 springs across the United States but doesn’t currently have a source of spring water in the Pacific Northwest. As a result, in order to reach consumers in that region, the company has to send trucks of bottled water up from California.

As recently reported in Truthout, bottled water is big business and getting bigger every year:

According to the International Bottled Water Association, the leading industry lobbying group, in 2013, Americans drank over 10 billion gallons of bottled water, generating $12.3 billion in revenue for beverage companies. This amount was more than double the revenue recorded in 2000. Americans spent $18.82 billion in 2014 purchasing what comes, basically free, out of the tap.

Nestlé is continually looking to secure new sources of water to meet growing demand. In Cascade Locks, Nestlé proposed to extract over 118 million gallons of water per year, bottle it and sell the water to customers throughout the Northwest under the Arrowhead brand. The company also proposed bottling millions of additional gallons of municipal water from the city under its Pure Life brand.

Its attempts to build the $50 million bottling plant and extraction operation occurred during a time when Oregonians, along with most other Westerners, were becoming more and more aware of water scarcity issues because of unprecedented droughts exacerbated by climate change.

Nestlé’s proposal sparked opposition and protests at every step. Opponents to the proposal objected to it on numerous grounds, including potential impacts to farmers, fish and people. Tribes, including the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and the Warm Springs Tribes, expressed opposition to the plan citing their treaty-protected fishing rights.

And, despite the near-unanimous support and cooperation of local and state officials, activists held the company at a standstill for almost eight years. Nestlé, frustrated by the amount of time it was taking for the city of Cascade Locks to obtain the water from the state of Oregon, changed tactics. Instead of trading water, the city and state officials moved to get an agreement that would permanently trade water rights. The change would avoid a lengthy public interest review process.

At this point, opponents of Nestlé’s project felt they had no other choice but to put the issue to a vote. The ballot initiative was started by Cascade Locks residents who were fed up with the local and state leaders who seemed impervious to their concerns.

“We were frustrated by Nestlé’s tactics such as working on the local and state officials and currying their favour,” said Aurora del Val, the campaign director for the Local Water Alliance, the community group formed to pass the ballot measure.

“Meanwhile, the citizens, our questions and our concerns, weren’t listened to in a real meaningful way. That’s what led us to this moment.”

When Hood River County residents decided to do this in 2015, the county was experiencing severe drought and water restrictions that were damaging the agricultural sector, which is the main economic driver in the county. Snowpack conditions throughout Oregon averaged less than 7% of normal that year, and state wide average precipitation was less than 87% of normal.

“We needed to act. It was our moment,” del Val told Truthout.

On September 11, 2015, the Local Water Alliance, with help from Food and Water Watch, filed a ballot measure petition for the Hood River County Water Protection Measure with the “goal of ensuring a long-term water supply for our county’s families, farms and fish.” The ballot initiative language would amend the county charter to prohibit any business from producing and transporting 1,000 or more gallons of bottled water per day for commercial sale.

In early December 2015, volunteers turned in 1,600 signatures, which was equivalent to 13 percent of all registered voters in the county and three times the number required to qualify a local ballot measure.

Then they began talking to voters. Del Val and dozens of volunteers hit the streets and started knocking on doors talking to people about Nestlé’s proposal for the community. They knew that in such a small community the most important work would be talking to neighbours face to face.

“We pulled out the stops. This was volunteer driven, and they were all incredible and made huge sacrifices to do it. I just feel like we moved mountains. The overwhelming response I got was thank you, thank you for protecting our water.” Del Val told Truthout.

“It didn’t matter what your political viewpoints were — people care about water.”

On March 9, 2016, about two months before the vote, a pro-Nestlé group opposed to the ballot measure called the Coalition for a Strong Gorge Economy registered with the Oregon secretary of state. The group brought on Rebecca Tweed, a well-known Portland area political consultant and lobbyist. Nestlé funded the political action committee to the tune of $105,000.

DeGraw and del Val told Truthout they believe that Nestlé was trying to hide its funding of the opposition and allege that it did not report the money it spent or in-kind contributions of staff time, both of which are against Oregon’s campaign finance laws.

When reached for comment by Truthout regarding the allegations that Nestlé broke Oregon’s campaign finance laws, Jane Lazgin from Nestlé Corporate Affairs responded by email, stating that “all contributions made by Nestle Waters to the International Bottled Water Association in support of the vote no to measure 14-55 campaign were publicly reported in accordance with Oregon election law.”

In a press statement after the vote, Dave Palais, the North American regional manager for Nestlé Waters, said, “While we firmly believe this decision on a county primary ballot is not in the best interest of Cascade Locks, we respect the democratic process.”

Although DeGraw and del Val were dismayed at the amount of money they were up against, along with the last-minute onslaught from the opposition PAC, they weren’t too worried that it would sway voters.

“The opposition spent $105,000 that really didn’t come out until the last minute, in terms of campaign reporting. But it didn’t matter because by the time they sent out those glossy mailers to voters, we had already spoken to every single voter, numerous times. If we hadn’t done that legwork, if we hadn’t prepared voters for misinformation that was coming, we wouldn’t have had 70% of voters supporting the ballot initiative. That work was crucial,” DeGraw told Truthout.

Del Val from Local Water Alliance agreed.

“We had a team of volunteers that made phone calls, knocked on doors, got blisters on their feet. People got it. It didn’t matter what party that person belonged to. It was that level of humanity that made all the difference.”

Del Val and the other organizers knew that taking this issue to the voters was the way to finally beat Nestlé.

“People all over are tracking this like a hawk and there are communities that have been fighting Nestlé for decades. A lot of these communities feel like … [there is] nothing they can do to protect their water; they feel disempowered. This helps inspire people. It is important that we won by such a large margin, because we not only showed it was possible but it was possible to win big in a conservative rural district,” del Val told Truthout.

In a county with just over 12,300 registered voters, there were 8,235 ballots cast with 5,524 people voting in favour of 14-55. Volunteers talked to almost every voter.

A Transformative Success

Opponents of Nestlé believe the passage of the ballot measure is perhaps the most significant win in the fight against water privatization in the United States. Stiv Wilson, director of campaigns for the Story of Stuff — a non-profit organization that coalesced around a 20-minute movie about the production and discarding of material objects in our lives and that tracks Nestlé’s water extraction projects nationwide — is making sure to elevate the fight at Cascade Locks, Oregon, so that communities throughout the country learn about how a small community beat one of the biggest corporations in the world.

“They have worked in the shadows for years, but they can’t do this anymore. Nestlé can’t exploit a small town without the world hearing about it,” Wilson said. He believes this tactic will spread.

“The people in Cascade Locks figured out a really smart, elegant mechanism to stop Nestlé. It is precedent setting. People will bring it to the ballot and the people are gonna win. They will pass it from county to county to county. It will spread like wildfire.”

At first, del Val didn’t realize that the fight she and her community were fighting against Nestlé had such a global reach.

“The scale didn’t really occur to me. When the Story of Stuff came out to our community and told us that they were taking our story and connecting the dots to the stories in other communities and showing how there is a pattern, I think at that point, I started understanding the ripple effects and the power of this campaign,” she said. “It inspired me. I got phone calls from across the country and from all over the world. People gave an outpouring of support. People told me, ‘You replace Cascade Locks with my town and that is what is happening here.’ There was a profound effect to this campaign.”

Wilson believes this is just the beginning.

“People who feel connected to other communities fighting the same thing feel more comfortable speaking out and confident that they can win,” Wilson said.

“We can amplify the fight and be the connective force between communities.” Wilson explained that drawing these connections enables people in different locations to feel like they are a part of a unified movement against the privatization and commodification of water.

“Wherever Nestlé goes, we will follow with our cameras and turn up the volume,” Wilson said. “They can’t work in the shadows anymore. This ballot win was a transformative success.”

NATO Amassing Hostile Forces on Russia Borders not Seen Since the Invasion in 1941*

Russia has not seen such a major military build-up close to its borders since 1941 when the Third Reich sent the Wehrmacht to conquer the Soviet Union, Professor Stephen F. Cohen said in his recent interview on The John Batchelor Show, referring to NATO’s increasingly assertive strategy in Eastern Europe and the Baltics.

“We have been watching for nearly a month a steady build-up of American and NATO forces along near Russia’s borders – on land, on sea and in the air,” he said.

“There has been nothing like this on Russia’s borders, such an amassing of hostile military force, since the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.”

Russia has been concerned with NATO’s overall strategy and its recent moves particularly. Last week the U.S. completed its first land-based component of the Aegis missile shield at an air base near Deveselu, Romania. A day later, the alliance held a groundbreaking ceremony in Poland. The Aegis Ashore base is scheduled to be deployed in Redzikowo by 2018.

Moscow has warned that the system could be detrimental for global peace and stability. NATO officials have tried to alleviate Russian concerns by saying that the Aegis system is purely defensive, but Cohen warned that the complex could be used for other purposes.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence Bob Work (C), Polish Minister of Defence Antoni Macierewicz (3rdR), Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Witold Waszczykowski (2ndR) and other officials take part in ground breaking ceremony of the northern section of defence anti-missile shield in Redzikowo military base in northern Poland

“Somebody said that the only defensive weapon in military history is a foxhole; everything else could be used for offensive purposes. [NATO’s missile defence system] could be used for offensive purposes. They can launch cruise missiles,” he observed.

Russian officials and experts have also questioned whether it was reasonable to build a shield that is supposed to protect the West against Iran’s ballistic missiles considering that Tehran does not pose any threat to its neighbours and beyond.

The Islamic Republic is not the real target.

“The majority of our missile defence installations … are directed at Russia. They are not directed at Iran, that’s a fairytale. The government puts it out, but nobody believes it,” the analyst noted.

Professor Cohen has long warned that Washington’s policies towards Russia have been the key reason for the recent cold spell in relations between the two global powers. This trend appears to be getting more dangerous.

“Are we sleepwalking towards an actual war with Russia or is this a plan to provoke a war with Russia?” he asked.

“If we are sleepwalking, we all need to yell, ‘Wake up!’ If they actually now would not mind a war with Russia, then they are crazy. Because there is no way if there is war with Russia on Russia’s borders that eventually some kind of nuclear weapons will not come into play.”

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity from Microwave Technology Finally Medically Proven*

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity from Microwave Technology Finally Medically Proven*

Finally, there’s documented medical proof that electromagnetic hypersensitivity is a real-time health issue that actually can be verified using standard medical procedures and testing capabilities.

An international group of researchers aced it when they published their findings from the clinical study “Metabolic and Genetic Screening of Electromagnetic Hypersensitive Subjects as a Feasible Tool for Diagnostics and Intervention” in the November 2014 issue of Mediators of Inflammation.

So, the million-dollar-question has to be,

“When will utility companies get up to speed on the latest in microwave technology damage to the human body?” Also,

“When will public utility commissions nationwide institute proper procedures to protect consumers from such damage?”

Pennsylvanians currently are being bombarded by non-thermal health problems from public utility companies’ electric, natural gas and water Smart Meters, which operate using microwave technology. Furthermore, the PA House Consumer Affairs Committee Chair Robert Godshall sits on Opt-Out Bills that will permit electrosensitive consumers and others to keep safe analogue meters, which have been in use for decades.

Below is the Press Release Pennsylvania Smart Meter Awareness (PASMA) released November 19, 2015, which discusses pertinent issues to EHS and Smart Meters.

Medical Studies Confirm Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity:

Are Utility Smart Meters Causing Health Problems For Pennsylvanians?

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity, or electrosensitivity (EHS), is a condition affecting more and more individuals who are exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and radiofrequencies (RFs) from radios, televisions, Wi-Fi, “dirty electricity” coming over household wires from utility companies smart meters (SMs), microwaves, photocopiers, plus cell phones and towers. Worldwide, the numbers of people affected by EMFs and RFs increase exponentially, and add to other environmentally sensitivity-related illnesses such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), sick building syndrome, Persian Gulf War veteran syndrome, and amalgam disease.

High Low Frequencies Effect on the bodyIn Pennsylvania, children’s and adults’ health is being harmed by electric, natural gas, and water utility companies’ smart meters!

The World Health Organization (WHO), in a December 2005 Background paper, stated:

“EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual. The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever its cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual. [….] For EHS individuals with long lasting symptoms and severe handicaps, therapy should be directed principally at reducing symptoms and functional handicaps. This should be done in close co-operation with a qualified medical specialist (to address the medical and psychological aspects of the symptoms) and a hygienist (to identify and, if necessary, control factors in the environment that are known to have adverse health effects of relevance to the patient).

Treatment should aim to establish an effective physician-patient relationship, help develop strategies for coping with the situation and encourage patients to return to work and lead a normal social life.

WHO published online information about that workshop on electromagnetic hypersensitivity in 2004 here.

PASMA wants to remind the Pennsylvania state legislature and the PA Public Utility Commission (PUC) that EHS is a harmful health—and even-life-threatening—issue for those affected, which utility companies are remiss about, in understanding that harm, by denying that such effects are medically proven and that SM-caused EHS cannot—and will not—be mediated by replacing AMI SMs with EMF-free analog meters, which were used safely for decades, and which other states’ utility companies are allowing. The control factor in the environment relevant to many EHS problems is traceable to the installation of smart meters on home properties.

PASMA further wants to point out what the WHO stated at the EMF workshop, which utilities, the PA legislature and PA PUC need to implement: help develop strategies for coping with the situation and encourage patients to return to work and lead a normal social life.

For those EHS individuals impacted by SMs, legal opt-outs from SMs are a necessary ethical and medical exception to PA 129, and must be granted. SM-induced health issues are serious matters, which need to be addressed intelligently by state officials, and very soon, as too many Pennsylvanians cannot lead normal lives due to Smart Meters.

PASMA respectfully directs PA legislators and the PA PUC to clinical studies in the journal Mediators of Inflammation Volume 2014, Article ID 924184, where researchers published their results regarding EHS. In their clinical study “Metabolic and Genetic Screening of Electromagnetic Hypersensitive Subjects as a Feasible Tool for Diagnostics and Intervention” published as an open access article, they say,

“Till now, no causal relationship between electromagnetic fields exposure and onset of clinical symptoms has been clearly proven. [….]

“The profiles of metabolic parameters’ alteration observed in EHS subjects were comparable to those of the “pure MCS” group, though generally less pronounced (Figures 5–8). Similarly to those MCS patients self-reportedly non-electrosensitive, the EHS cohort showed a highly significant-versus-control decrease in the erythrocyte GST activity and an increase in GPX activity levels (Figure 5), coupled with a marked decrease of GSH levels (Figure 6). [….]

A second parameter proved to be significantly different () between EHS and MCS groups that is the ratio omega-6/omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the erythrocyte membrane phospholipid fraction (Figure 7(c)). [….]

Further developments must necessarily include a more objective and standardized classification of individual electromagnetic sensitivity scores, to conclusively assess the proposed parameters as a distinctive and specific panel of disease biomarkers for EHS. Our findings will hopefully contribute, in combination with the so-far putative genetic-risk factors, a better molecular definition of environmental-borne sensitivity-related illnesses and a tool to discriminate single SRI comorbidities, based on sufficiently proven molecular evidences able to gain clinical consensus.

Smart Meter technology is based on microwaves, which is damaging the health of Pennsylvanians; has to be corrected by the PA legislature and PA PUC, since it’s counter to and, undoubtedly, violates the Nuremberg Code, including the Third Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states:

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons…shall not be violated.”

Certainly, Pennsylvania’s children’s and adults’ health status is being compromised and violated 24/7/365 from EMFs, RFs, and the dirty electricity produced by Smart Meters.

Syrian forces have reportedly captured a truck transporting $100,000 worth of medical supplies from Turkey for Takfiri terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria.

Syrian security forces confiscated the truck that belonged to the Turkish al-Yaman medical company as it was carrying over 25 tons of supplies in the northwestern Syrian province of Aleppo, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported on Saturday.

“Al-Yaman Company in Istanbul is sending medicine, equipment, and medical supplies to Daesh organization in Manbej and Mosul and to other terrorist groups,” said a Syrian military source.

The source added that a militant commander was also arrested along with the shipment.

Turkey has on multiple occasions been accused of aiding and abetting militant groups operating in Syria with reports saying that Ankara actively trains and arms Takfiri militants there, and facilitates their safe passage into the Arab country. Ankara has also been accused of buying smuggled oil from Daesh.

Last week, Syrian intelligence forces said that they have captured another haul of medical supplies near Aleppo that came from Turkey and was destined for Daesh terrorists in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

A colonel in Syria’s Military Intelligence Directorate, Hussein al-Omar, said the truck loaded with some 25 tons of medicine and hospital supplies, including a number of dialysis machines, had entered Syria from Turkey’s Bab al-Hawa international border crossing and was heading for Mosul.

Last year, Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, posted footage purportedly showing Turkish MIT intelligence trucks carrying weapons to Takfiri groups in Syria in 2014.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. Damascus says Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are the main supporters of the militants fighting the government forces.

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the Syrian crisis.

FBI’s Own Report Exposes “War on Cops” as Pure Propaganda*

By William Grigg

Following a year in which the public was relentlessly barraged with alarmist rhetoric about a “war on cops” and the dreadful impact of the so-called “Ferguson Effect,” official FBI statistics confirm that violent line-of-duty police deaths declined precipitously in 2015.

According to the Bureau:

“Preliminary statistics … show that 41 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2015. This is a decrease of almost 20 percent when compared with the 51 officers killed in 2014.” A greater number of officers (45) suffered fatal injuries in duty-related accidents, 41 of which involved motor vehicles.

Through May 17 of this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, there have been 35 line-of-duty police officer deaths, 21 of which involve violence, such as gunfire or vehicular assault. This suggests that 2016 might see an increase in that grim total, but fortunately that remains only a possibility.

Throughout 2015, law enforcement officials, police unions, and even FBI Director James Comey warned of a “war on cops” that was supposedly an outgrowth of what they called the “Ferguson Effect” – police reluctance to use force because of concerns over negative publicity. On May 10, for instance, Comey reiterated that theme, insisting that the “viral video effect” has changed “the way police may be acting” by inhibiting them from taking assertive action to deal with violent crime. This supposedly leaves police more insecure, thereby emancipating criminals to wreak havoc on under-protected communities.

However, as former Baltimore police officer-turned-police reform advocate Michael Wood Jr. told The Intercept, there are cases in which less aggressive policing has corresponded to a decline in violent crime: Where police don’t treat the public as an enemy to be subdued, the public responds by seeking help, and giving it, in the effort to deter crimes against persons and property.

“Police now for the first time are having to consider the consequences of being brutal, being unethical, and doing things that for the longest time they could do and not be accountable for,” Wood declares. “But that doesn’t make crime happen.”

Comey’s melodramatic statements about a “chill wind blowing through law enforcement,” and reliance on things he has been told “in lots of conversations privately with police leaders” demonstrate that “he is pushing an ideology,” Woods continues.

“Comey’s position is that if the armed enforcement wing of the government takes its boot off the neck of the public, just a little, then we will just become killers.”

While fewer police suffered violent deaths last year than in any year since 2013 – when 27 officers were feloniously killed – there is no evidence that the police have been inhibited in the use of deadly force. According to unofficial tabulations, at least 1,200 Americans died in violent encounters with the police last year. Official notice is taken of each of the exceedingly rare instances in which police are violently killed, but there is no official tally of people killed by the police, or accounting for whether each use of lethal force was legally justified.

It is true, as Comey and other law enforcement officials have said, that last year’s murder rate was about eleven percent higher than the year before, as defined by crime statistics gathered in the country’s 30 largest cities. However, as the Brennan Center for Justice points out in its detailed report on the subject,

“Even with the 2015 increases, murder rates are roughly the same as they were in 2012”; furthermore, while murder rates were up in 14 of the 30 largest cities, 11 others saw that rate go down last year.

When all documented offenses against persons and property were taken into account, elaborates the Brennan Center, the crime rate for 2015 declined by 1.5 percent.

“It is important to remember just how much crime has fallen in the last 25 years,” underscores the Brennan Center report.

The crime rate is now half what it was in 1990, and almost a quarter (22 percent) less than it was at the turn of the century.”

Since violent on-duty police deaths are vanishingly rare, and crime of all kinds at near-historic lows, what is the real “Ferguson Effect”?

Perhaps the true meaning of that expression is found in the emergence of a movement spearheaded by police unions to define law enforcement as a “specially protected category” for the purposes of “hate crimes” prosecution.

Police officers already enjoy the benefits of “Blue Privilege” – qualified immunity and special consideration in the use of occupational violence. Criminal offenses against police officers are already treated as serious felonies. However, at the urging of police unions and their allies, legislatures in several states are considering bills that would treat violence against police – such as actively resisting arrest – as hate crimes.

Versions of that legislation, which is supported by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) – the country’s largest police union – have been introduced in Maryland and Louisiana, and as ordinances in several cities. The Louisiana bill, HB 953, would make any offense committed against a person or property because of “actual or perceived … employment as a law enforcement officer or firefighter” a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

An FOP-supported bill in Maryland that would likely serve as a model for federal legislation would make resisting arrest a “hate crime” owing to the identity of the supposed victim. State legislatures elsewhere are considering similar measures, and some municipal governments are enacting resolutions endorsing the FOP’s demand to swaddle police officers in federal “specially protected” status.

In a letter to President Obama, Chuck Canterbury, National President of the armed tax-feeders’ union, demanded that “the current Federal hate crimes law be expanded to include law enforcement officers. This call has gone unanswered and our nation’s law enforcement officers continue to die in the streets.”

Displaying tone-deafness as to what his comments say about the supposed valour of police officers, Canterbury demanded that cops be designated a “specially protected” group who are “hunted and targeted just because of the uniform they wear.” This woeful account of insurgent criminals and besieged cops evolved into a demand that “hate speech” be treated as a federal offense.

“Elected officials are quick to console the families of the fallen and praise us for the difficult and dangerous work that we do every day,” sniffles the FOP commissar.

“Yet, too many are silent when the hate speech floods the media with calls for violence against police or demands that police stand down and give them” – Canterbury never defines “them,” interestingly – “`room to destroy.’ The violence will not end until the rhetoric does which is why I have called on Congress and your Administration to work with us to address the surge of violence against police by expanding the Federal hate crimes law to protect police.”

The objective here, once again, is to penalize rhetoric as a criminal act against a member of a specially protected class. Apparently, the “War on Cops” won’t be won until citizens who criticize them face criminal prosecution for doing so.

Hezbollah Captures CIA Officer in Aleppo, Commanding al Qaeda*

Hezbollah Captures CIA Officer in Aleppo, Commanding al Qaeda*

By Gordon Duff

Veterans Today now has two confirmed sources that an American CIA agent was captured this week near Mount Simeon, outside Aleppo.  The American was part of a group commanding an operations room Jabat al Nusra, al Qaeda’s “franchise” in Syria.  The CIA has denied the claim, but it has already floated an offer through 3rd party sources to buy their man back.

VT exclusively reported the capture of an Israeli advisor with ISIS in Iraq in October 2015, while in April of that year, America’s Delta Force (a group founded by a VT advisory board member), barely rescued a retired American general from Syrian spetsnaz closing in on him near Deir Ezzor. From an exclusive VT report:

The American general in the Al Amr district of Deir en Zor, a command and control facility between Mosul and the ISIS military headquarters in Syria, al Raqqah, was discovered by the NSA through intercepts of encrypted communications, to be the target of a Syrian Spetznaz team.  The Syrians were working with intelligence received by a Saudi officer captured two weeks before near Idlib, a town outside Aleppo.

If Syria could capture a senior American military official inside its borders, with inexorable proof of American complicity in the operational command of ISIS military forces, the Russians and Chinese would no longer be able to ignore the nature of the attack on Syria, according to high level sources in Damascus.

In a report confirmed in Syria and Iraq, the Delta Force team flew out of a secret base in Western Anbar, only a short distance from the Euphrates River, executed in extraction of the highly embarrassing CIA operative and “sanitized” the ISIS compound, leaving nothing alive but goats and chickens.

Highly placed sources told VT that Hezbollah seized four intelligence officers in a quality military operation near Khan Toman, the stronghold of Al Nusra, on May 12th. The officers are American, French, Turkish and Saudi. They were running the joint operations room with Al Nusra leading militants.

Khan Toman is a  village in the area of Samaan Moutain.  It is about 10 km south-west Aleppo, where huge grain silos are located.

The U.S. is currently tightening the noose on Hezbollah, in an effort to deprive the Party of its financial resources as a reprisal for siding with the Assad regime. Iran is the main supplier of Hezbollah armaments Hezbollah Party Leader Hassan Naserallah recently pledged to continue the struggle and defeat the U.S.-Israeli project in the region, saying that the “Party has a good catch,” without elaboration.

The Hezbollah clandestine operation came after 9 Iranian revolutionary guards fighters were killed in Khan Toman , in fighting with Al Nusra. The Aleppo combat is gaining a momentum now and the Russians with their allies are working round-the-clock to evict the armed gangsters from the areas which they still control by the help of foreign powers.

It is believed that CIA operatives are now advising ISIS and Al Nusra on their subversive activity schemes,  at the same time, DESI confirmed that there are already U.S. special forces experts operating inside Syria, mainly in the Kurdish areas, Daraa and Quneitera, in an attempt to tip the military balance in favour of the opposition.

Also, DESI says there are 5000 “Blackwater” mercenaries, many recruited from Sudan, in Jordan awaiting a signal from the Pentagon to enter the Syrian borders and incorporate with the militants, especially in Daraa, where al-Nusra fighters are predominant there.  The current incarnation of the infamous mercenary group, according to DESI sources, is reputed to be run by right wing GOP operative and “soap magnate” Richard (and wife Betsy) DeVos of Ada, Michigan, father-in-law of frontman “Erik Prinz,” is also coordinating al Qaeda operations in Yemen as well.

European Department for security and information (DESI) secretary General Haissam Bou Said said “Al Nusra will be the U.S. umbrella for uniting the moderate opposition. If the U.S. and Russia fail to agree on the outstanding issues, the Middle East region will set on fire, yet, the battlefield will be the benchmark.”

Bou Said revealed that the NATO is currently unable to confront the Russians militarily in Europe. Therefore, this will give the Russians a considerable margin to move in the Middle East.”

Second CIA

Sources inside the U.S. intelligence community, however, tell a different story.  They cite a rift between a “second CIA” run by Bush era contracting firms that had taken over all command functions for that organization, groups now in the pay of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, using CIA resources including the massive CIA base in Kosovo, Camp Bondsteel and the reputed CIA covert operations facility at the US Naval Support Activity in Dubai.

They claim that, with extremist Avigdor Lieberman taking over as Israeli Defense Minister, Israel is preparing a new move into Lebanon in support of ISIS and al Nusra.  Sources say that Israel believes the terror groups can act as a blocking force against the military resurgence of Hezbollah, now advancing against ISIS taking town after town, alongside the reinvigorated Russia trained Syrian Arab Army.

Sources in Israel are also certain that such a move would put Israeli cities under missile bombardment that would expose the “Iron Dome” system as the fraud it is, a sacrifice Lieberman, a hardcover Bolshevik, is prepared to make to justify an attack on Iran.  Source indicate that this plan is largely predicated on a Trump presidency, in an election gambling boss Sheldon Adelson has agreed to fund with up to $3bn in Macao “black funds.”

U.S.-Russian tug of war in Syria overshadowed the accelerating events that occurring worldwide. Both super powers are flexing their muscles in a show of defiance despite the previous understandings that were reached between Obama and Putin.

A Russian source told VT “no one knows what is in the mind of the Russian Caesar unless you blow it up.” President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, has realized that the Americans are playing on time regarding Aleppo truce, using the technique of the revolving door. “The influx of militants never stopped flowing from the Turkish borders, while the inflow of armaments is by leaps and bounds,” an eyewitness said.

Syrian military source said. It is evident that the Russians are trying now to avoid any direct clash with the Americans on the ground, yet, The Pentagon is still refraining from conducting joint sorties with the Russian military to strike ISIS and Al Nusra strongholds.

Moreover, The so called U.S. backed moderate opposition embracing Muslim brothers and al Qaeda affiliated groups are constantly breaching the ceasefire, and the Americans turn a blind eye to their practices and the massacres they are committing on a daily basis in Aleppo and other Syrian provinces.

VT understands that there is a Russian military plan now underway to halt terrorist violations and to curtail the advance of the Democratic Syrian forces along with the Army of Rebels to take over Raqaa as planned by the Americans. The Syrian army is making now headways in Eastern Ghota with the help of Hezbollah fighters, as well as in Damascus suburbs.
