We were Made for these Times*

We were Made for these Times*

By Clarissa Pinkola Estes

A Message of Hope and Inspiration

My friends, do not lose heart. We were made for these times. I have heard from so many recently who are deeply and properly bewildered. They are concerned about the state of affairs in our world now. Ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradations of what matters most to civilized, visionary people.

You are right in your assessments. The lustre and hubris some have aspired to while endorsing acts so heinous against children, elders, everyday people, the poor, the unguarded, the helpless, is breathtaking. Yet, I urge you, ask you, gentle you, to please not spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times. Especially do not lose hope. Most particularly because, the fact is that we were made for these times. Yes. For years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement.

Do not lose hope

This is a time of awakening

I grew up on the Great Lakes and recognize a seaworthy vessel when I see one. Regarding awakened souls, there have never been more able vessels in the waters than there are right now across the world. And they are fully provisioned and able to signal one another as never before in the history of humankind.

Look out over the prow; there are millions of boats of righteous souls on the waters with you. Even though your veneers may shiver from every wave in this stormy roil, I assure you that the long timbers composing your prow and rudder come from a greater forest. That long-grained lumber is known to withstand storms, to hold together, to hold its own, and to advance, regardless.

Holding together through the storm

In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world. Do not focus on that. There is a tendency, too, to fall into being weakened by dwelling on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be. Do not focus there. That is spending the wind without raising the sails.

You can make a difference

We are needed, that is all we can know. And though we meet resistance, we more so will meet great souls who will hail us, love us and guide us, and we will know them when they appear. Didn’t you say you were a believer? Didn’t you say you pledged to listen to a voice greater? Didn’t you ask for grace? Don’t you remember that to be in grace means to submit to the voice greater?

We are needed, that is all we can know

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.

Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.

One Act at a Time

What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.

One act of kindness at a time.

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul.

Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these – to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.

Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.

Overcoming Despair

There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it. I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate.

The reason is this: In my uttermost bones I know something, as do you. It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours. They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbour and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.

Under Pressure from Protesters, NYPD Chief Resigns*

Under Pressure from Protesters, NYPD Chief Resigns*

By Alan Pyke

Josmar Truijillo, far left, holds a “WANTED” poster with the face of NYPD Commissioner William Bratton at a protest against the department on Monday near City Hall.

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is resigning suddenly under pressure from protesters.

The announcement Tuesday marks the end of Bratton’s second stint atop the NYPD. He will stay on into September to aid his successor James O’Neill, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Bratton had already planned to retire by the end of next year. But he had previously insisted he would not step down until the department was reorganized to his satisfaction.

His abrupt resignation Tuesday gives a win to Black Lives Matter protesters who had amassed in a park across from City Hall and defied police to evict them. The #ShutDownCityHallNYC protest makes three demands, with Bratton’s scalp the first. The other two — a full defunding of the NYPD and reparations payments from the city to the families of people of color brutalizes by police — are tougher sells.

Bratton is a complicated figure, simultaneously responsible for ushering in and defending a quota-driven policing strategy that breeds oppressive and aggressive practices, and for offering a rare public acknowledgment of the racist history of American policing.

Bratton called out that history in clear language in a 2015 speech at a black church in Queens.

“Slavery, our country’s original sin, sat on a foundation codified by laws enforced by police, by slave-catchers,” Bratton said, noting that the Dutch explorer who established New York made slave-catching cops his first priority. “Since then, the stories of police and black citizens have intertwined again and again. …The unequal nature of that relationship cannot and must not be denied.”

The Birth of Broken Windows

Bratton’s latter-day honesty about police racism is about as far away from Rudy Giuliani’s race-baiting convention speech and television appearances as a white establishment figure in law enforcement can get. But Bratton made his reputation by serving as Giuliani’s right-hand man in instituting so-called “broken windows” law enforcement policies that fuelled mass incarceration and kept an NYPD boot on the neck of the city’s black communities.

His signature contribution to the policing business, now adopted almost everywhere in America, is a data system that allows municipal leaders to distance themselves from allegations of racism by cloaking police actions in quantitative language.

Compstat — made infamous among civilians by HBO’s The Wire — was Bratton’s way of condensing the complex human work of law enforcement into measurable, discrete figures. The system signals to commanders that numbers matter as much or more than practical community relationships. That helps promote ideas like arrest quotas and stop-and-frisk policies and encourages officers to fudge the numbers to make their bosses happy.

Together with then-Mayor Giuliani’s vehemence about cleaning up the city, Bratton’s numbers-driven focus on so-called “lifestyle offenses” effectively made the NYPD an occupying force in the city’s poorest pockets. Officers were directed to aggressively patrol and make arrests for the most minor offenses. The era bred policies that the department is struggling to shake to this day, such as the stairwell patrols that led officer Peter Liang to shoot and kill Akai Gurley last year.

Cleaning Up His Mess

Nonetheless, Bratton’s return to New York under Mayor Bill de Blasio was initially hailed as a potential breath of fresh air for the city’s long-suffering minority population. Bratton’s predecessor Ray Kelly played the same role for then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg as Bratton had for Giuliani, as the guy who got his hands dirty to make white New Yorkers feel safe at the expense of everyone else. It seemed possible that Bratton under de Blasio would serve to reform the NYPD.

But those reform efforts have been uneven at best. Even as scandals exposed both individual corruption and systemic quota-driven abuses, Bratton ensured that bad cops were reinstated before they resigned so their paths out of the department would be smoother. In public statements that sounded like time capsules from decades before, he blamed marijuana for crime and rappers for real-world violence.

And the choking death of Eric Garner at the hands of Officer Daniel Pantaleo in July 2014 illustrated just how deep-rooted the ideas Bratton promoted in his first stint atop the department have become. Garner’s ostensible crime — selling loose cigarettes on the street — is exactly the sort of thing Giuliani and Bratton targeted in their 1990s crackdown.

Bratton acknowledged at the time that the chokehold Pantaleo used to kill Garner is now banned by the department handbook, but the department never charged him. And the physical violence and escalation-oriented interactions that Garner’s killing demonstrated are straight out of the playbook Bratton helped Giuliani write.

Iraqi Engineering Students Share their Graduation Ceremony with Iraq’s Orphans*

Despite the terror, destruction and continuous suffering that faces Iraqis on a daily basis, many youth are choosing to take positive steps towards a brighter future. This year, a group of friends that were graduating together decided to mark their success with a unique graduation ceremony.

Students from the School of Engineering at the University of Technology in Baghdad, Iraq held their celebration at Al-Ayn Social Care Foundations’ headquarters in Al-Kadhimiya . They celebrated their graduation amongst a group of orphans that had been invited to join them. They named this initiative ‘A mark of goodness’ and instead of receiving presents, these graduates chose to gift the orphans and share their happiness.

It was particularly thoughtful in that it was a rejection of excessive spending trends sweeping graduation ceremonies in Iraq. The amount of money that would have been spent on their graduation ceremony was donated to the orphans at Al-Ayn in order to support them achieve their own success. This initiative was received favourably by many and has already been replicated by other graduates at different branches of Al-Ayn throughout Iraq. Wishing these graduates all the tawfiq from Allah (SWT) for their thoughtful act of kindness.

A spokesperson from Al-Ayn UK said “Such initiatives go beyond providing financial support, to reaching out to the orphans and demonstrating solidarity. The story touched our team in the UK, and so we decided to publish it on our social media. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses and how quickly and widely the story has spread. We hope that it has inspired many more people to think of those less fortunate than them”

U.S. Officials Blow the Whistle on Secret CIA, MOSSAD Operation in Syria*

U.S. Officials Blow the Whistle on Secret CIA, MOSSAD Operation in Syria*

By Aaron Nelson

Detonating a car bomb in a civilian-populated area and denying any involvement in the attack is called terrorism when our enemies do it.

But what if the terror attack is backed by Israel and the United States?

Speaking only under the condition of anonymity, 5 former U.S. intelligence officials told The Washington Post that the Central Intelligence Agency tracked Imad Mughniyah for at least a year before killing him in a joint operation with the Israeli Secret Intelligence Service.

By studying Mughniyah’s daily routine, a strategy for the attack was masterminded and carried out in secret by the ‘good guys’. A truth which remained untold until last week.

According to their report, it was Israel who initially approached the CIA about the joint assassination, but former U.S. President George W. Bush is who authorized the operation after securing approval from the Attorney General, the Director of National Intelligence, the National Security Adviser, and the Justice Department.

It’s also illegal.

–EXECUTIVE ORDER 12333, signed into law by U.S. President Ronald Reagan on December 4th, 1981

No person employed by or acting on behalf of the United States Government shall engage in or conspire to engage in assassination.”

–EXECUTIVE ORDER 12036signed into law by U.S. President Jimmy Carter on January 24, 1978.

No person employed by or acting on behalf of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, assassination.”

–EXECUTIVE ORDER 11905, created and signed into law by U.S. President Gerald R. Ford on February 18, 1976.

No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination.”

After testing the bomb more than 25 times at the CIA’s Harvey Point base in North Carolina, the CIA provided the device to the Israeli Secret Intelligence Service to plant in a spare tire on Mughniyah’s car.

The way it was set up, the U.S. could object and call it off, but it could not execute,” a former U.S. official said.

Following the assassination, Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema called the car bombing an act of terror. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah blamed the assassination on Israel. The investigation carried out by the Syrian government into the attack did not identify a culprit, but determined Mughniyah was killed by a car bomb that was detonated by remote.

As it turns out, this is exactly what these five U.S. officials are now claiming had happened. The device was triggered remotely from Tel Aviv by agents with the Israeli Secret Intelligence Service in communication with CIA operatives on the ground. Facial recognition technology was used to identify Mughniyah as he walked out of a restaurant minutes before the bomb was detonated.

Following the attack, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert denied any Israeli involvement with the car bombing.

Israel rejects the attempt by terror groups to attribute to it any involvement in this incident. We have nothing further to add,” said former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in 2008, following the attack.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials celebrated the news of Mughniyah’s death.

The acting U.S. Director of National Intelligence, Mike McConnell, suggested the Syrian government, or perhaps internal Hezbollah factions, were responsible for the assassination. As it turns out, this narrative was nearly the opposite of reality.

At the time, McConnell claimed U.S. intelligence agencies were investigating his ‘conspiracy theory’. Now many will now surely recognize it as ‘CIA propaganda’ designed to manipulate the narrative told by U.S. corporate media outlets in 2008 while covering the car bombing assassination of Mughniyah.

There’s some evidence that it may have been internal Hezbollah. It may have been Syria. We don’t know yet, and we’re trying to sort that out.” – Mike McConnell

For decades, U.S. officials accused Imad Mughniyah of masterminding several attacks, most notably the bombing of the 1983 U.S. Embassy in Beirut that killed several CIA agents, though no legitimate evidence of his role has been released.

The extraordinarily close cooperation between the CIA and the Israeli Secret Intelligence Service suggests that secret assassination operations by these intelligence agencies, a tactic considered by many to be a ‘terrorist act’, are probably not uncommon.

A strategic region in the western Anbar Province has been liberated from the ISIS terrorist group by the Iraqi security forces.

Security personnel had fully regained control over the Khalidiya Island river peninsula, which lies nearly 90 kilometres (55 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, Al-Sumaria reported on Sunday, citing Major General Ismail al-Mahlawi, in charge of Anbar Operations Command.

According to Ismail al-Mahlawi, dozens of terrorists were killed during the operation. He also added that defusing of improvised explosive devices and clearing of booby-trapped houses are currently carrying out by bomb disposal experts in the area.

The Commander of Federal Police Forces, Lieutenant General Raed Shaker Jawdat, separately said that nearly 200 ISIS terrorists had been killed and 250 bombs had been disarmed by the Iraqi security forces in the operation to free the Khalidiya Island.

In addition, a US-led coalition airstrike has killed a high-ranking ISIS figure in Iraq, who was the self-proclaimed governor of northern Baghdad, alongside a large number of his aides.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said that when US-led forces carried out a precision strike against the terrorists, acting on information provided by Iraqi counter-terrorism and intelligence units, they were meeting militants on the outskirts of the Iraqi capital.

Gruesome violence has engulfed the northern and western parts of Iraq ever since ISIS began a campaign of terror in the country in June 2014. The terrorists have been fighting with Iraqi army soldiers and allied volunteer fighters, who have won back several terrorist-held regions in joint operations.

The Syrian armed forces, backed up by Russian strikers, repelled a terrorist offensive near the city of Aleppo, killing over 800 terrorists and destroying 14 battle tanks.

Over 800 terrorists were killed and 14 battle tanks were destroyed by the Syrian armed forces, backed up by Russian strikers, during the repelling of a terrorist offensive near the city of Aleppo, the Russian Ministry of Defence has reported.

““The Syrian army troops and Russian air force repelled a massive militant attack today. More than 800 militants were killed, and 14 tanks, 10 infantry fighting vehicles, and more than 60 technical vehicles with mounted weapons were destroyed,” the Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy said on Monday.”

Rudskoy noted that terrorists continued to prevent the local population’s escape from the combat zone in an effort to use them as human shield, and pull reserves from other areas in an effort to undermine the government troops’ resolve.

“Thus, the terrorists executed four people attempting to exit through the humanitarian corridors yesterday in the Eastern part of Aleppo,” he said.

The lieutenant general pointed out that Russian aircraft do their utmost to avoid collateral civilian damage by not targeting populated areas within city limits, unlike the US-led anti-ISIL coalition active near Manbij.

“The Russian Aerospace Forces actively supports government troops in repelling enemy attacks, carrying out selective strikes on militant positions,” Sergei Rudskoy said.

Russian air strikes were also reported in Sarmin and Saraqib in Idlib countryside.

U.S. Military Dependents Ordered to Leave Turkey*

U.S. Military Dependents Ordered to Leave Turkey*

By Andrew Tilghman

Editor’s note: This story was originally published on March 29, 2016. The coup in Turkey took place on July 15, 2016,

The Defense Department on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of hundreds of military and civilian dependents from Turkey, including Incirlik Air Base, due to increased concerns about security.

The order applies to nearly 700 spouses and children at Incirlik as well as small populations in the areas of Ismir and Mugla, defense officials said.

The order is the latest sign of heightened concern about security for Americans in Turkey, particularly the area along the Syrian border where Incirlik is located.

“We understand this is disruptive to our military families, but we must keep them safe and ensure the combat effectiveness of our forces to support our strong ally Turkey in the fight against terrorism,”  Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, commander of U.S. European Command, said in a statement issued with the announcement Tuesday.

The total U.S. military force deployed at Incirlik has grown to nearly 2,500, up from about 1,300 last year, after the Turkish government agreed to let U.S. combat aircraft use the base as a key staging area for air strikes on Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

Yet the base’s prominent role in the fight against the Islamic State group also raised new security concerns.

In July, worries about extremists targeting U.S. troops and their families prompted military officials to lock down the base and prohibit the roughly 5,000 American troops, civilians and dependents from venturing out to the “American alley” outside the installation’s main gate, where troops for years have patronized kabob shops, carpet salesmen and local markets.

Initially there was little worry about any immediate danger among the base’s military population. In September, the Defense Department offered voluntary evacuations to the roughly 900 military dependents at Incirlik, but only about 80, or less than 10% decided to leave at that time, Incirlik officials said.

The remaining dependents today, about 670 according to a defense official, will have to leave involuntarily due to Tuesday’s order.

The evacuation comes amid an uptick in violence in Turkey, including a Feb. 18 car bomb in the capital, Ankara.

On March 9, the Defense Department-run school at Incirlik was closed due to security concerns and the base imposed additional force-protection measures.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the dependents will be evacuated promptly. “This will move relatively quickly,” he said Tuesday.

Cook said the decision to remove dependents from Incirlik does not amount to a permanent decision to end accompanies tours at the installation.
