Dallas Mum Discovers New Secret Service Sex scandals through Public Information Requests*

By Dave Lieber

“A lot of people think I’m nuts to pursue this.”

The speaker is a self-described Dallas stay-at-home mom who spent $100,000 in legal fees to expose a culture of corruption in the U.S. Secret Service.

She filed 89 Freedom of Information Acts (89!) and discovered enough Secret Service scandals and cover-ups that even Bob Woodward would be impressed.

For this, she got very little public attention, until now.

Meet Malia Litman. A retired lawyer and wife of noted Internet entrepreneur David Litman, founder of hotels.com and now CEO of getaroom.com.

She sits at her table in her North Dallas mansion during The Watchdog team visit.

Hors d’oeuvres were set out before we arrive — something my colleague Marina Trahan Martinez and I are not used to — cucumber slices, cookies, carrots, celery, hummus and pita bread. Her story is so riveting, we don’t touch the food.

When the first Secret Service sex scandals broke a few years ago, she grew curious. A former senior partner at Thompson and Knight law firm in Dallas, she knew that federal law allows us to see government documents.

She began filing requests with the U.S. Department Homeland Security to learn of any incidents of agent misbehavior in the Secret Service, any investigations and disciplinary action.

I’ll skip ahead to the end of her multi-year legal battle that ensued. She won. In the end, she received 3,914 pages, some of them so hot they almost burn the fingers.

My colleague Marina spent the week analyzing the documents and pulled out vignettes which are shared with this story. Here, though, are lowlights of behind-the-scenes mishaps of our vaunted Secret Service.

  • A culture of “wheels up; rings off” meant even married agents could party on foreign trips.
  • Secret Service K-9 units brought their dogs into their hotel room, which the dogs trashed. The agents made payoffs so the incident wouldn’t be reported.
  • An agent who missed his flight later showed up drunk with two prostitutes. He was not disciplined.
  • Agents “engaged” with prostitutes in Amsterdam’s red-light district during an advance team trip.
  • A supervisor choked a female subordinate because she rejected his sexual advances.
  • A supervisor offered a subordinate a larger office in return for sex.
  • A supervisor took a subordinate to a sex show while on duty.
  • A male agent’s gun was stolen by a male prostitute he solicited online. The gun was never recovered.
  • A manager in the National Threat Assessment Center forced employees to drink alcohol in his office “so that he could trust them.” The same manager was accused of multiple incidents of sexual harassment.

Why this matters

One word here: blackmail.

Misbehaving agents are put at risk, and to protect their careers they could be blackmailed, putting those they protect in an unforeseen vulnerability.

I contacted the Secret Service. Agency spokeswoman Cathy L. Milhoan sent me a brief summary of Litman’s now-dismissed lawsuit and the judge’s rulings in the case. No comment on the activities themselves, though.

I get that there are extraordinary problems in our most sacred protective detail. This in itself is not news. What fascinates me here are the great and courageous lengths Malia Litman went through to bring this out.

She says: “The documents themselves show major corruption in the Secret Service. But to me, the bigger issue, the more offensive thing was the cover-up of the corruption.”

Her husband says: “She doesn’t let people push her around. In those dark moments when you wonder what you’re going to do, she finds a way to push through. She never has self-doubts about the righteousness of her cause.”

She explains, “I’m in a unique position that most people don’t have. I have a law degree and the financial ability to not work and pay a lawyer. Most Americans don’t have this.”

She also has guts.

“This was not about a political party or ideology,” she says.

It’s more about what’s wrong with our government. When I see this level of corruption and the waste of taxpayer money, somebody needs to say, ‘You’re not going to get away with this.’ At least I want to make people aware of it.”

Let’s end on a sour note. The federal Freedom of Information Act is supposed to work by itself. But more and more, government officials force those who request information into costly lawsuits.

Although Litman’s requests were delayed, stalled and in some cases, falsely denied, the federal judge in her case is forcing her to pay all legal bills.

With a sigh, her husband says:

“What’s the purpose of the Freedom of Information Act if the government can stall and delay and push it on people to get the legal risk? And the court doesn’t enforce the act by making the government pay for its obstruction?”

Senior U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings ruled that Litman “has not shown she is entitled to an award because she has not shown that her pursuit of records involves a legitimate public benefit.”

The judge cites as precedent another case that found “that generally increasing public knowledge about the government is not a legitimate public benefit.”

That’s about the dumbest idea I ever heard.

Here’s a look at more details of some of the incidents, based on court records, obtained by Malia Litman.

Frisco incident

Just before Halloween 2012, an underage male was interviewed in Frisco by Homeland Security investigators. That’s the location of the Dallas field office for the Department of Homeland Security and Office of Inspector General.

The boy was asked whether a Secret Service agent had sexually molested him. The boy answered that he had spent the night on three occasions with the special agent — but he slept alone on the couch.

A year earlier, the Denver office discovered that the same agent was caught by customs agents and border patrol officers trying to import into the country by mail the main ingredient for a “date rape” drug. The agent supposedly used the drug to seduce and molest underage boys. The boy in Frisco said he had seen the special agent mixing something into a drink.

Drinking on the job

A source, unidentified in the documents, complained about a “sweep it under the rug” culture at the Secret Service. In June 2012, the source agreed to be interviewed.

A manager at the National Threat Assessment Center, or as he called it, the “Nice T and A Club,” [edited] made employees drink on the job so he could trust them.

The same manager a few years before had been caught by the New York Police Department with a prostitute, was given a few days off work and then later promoted.

The source said at least three female employees resigned from the NTAC because of sexual harassment involving abusive language. The manager was later caught emailing pornography.

Stolen gun

A Secret Service agent used his work laptop to order online a same-sex prostitute in Puerto Rico, according to at least two anonymous complaints made in 2012 to the Office of Inspector General.

The agent met up with the man, who stole his gun.

The agent resigned from embarrassment when inspectors confronted him. A report of the incident was never made to the Office of Inspector General, and the agent’s stolen weapon was never recovered.

Dallas agents

Secret Service agents in the Dallas office behaved properly on one well-publicized but notorious trip, according to one agent’s statement.

During President Barack Obama’s trip to Colombia in 2012 — the trip that first brought agency bad behaviour into public light — a Dallas-based agent was assigned to stand guard at the Hilton Hotel, where the president would stay.

On his off duty, he and three other Dallas agents shopped, ate at a steakhouse and went sightseeing before returning to their rooms at another hotel.

The Dallas agent later told the Office of Inspector General he was unaware of any of the sexual escapades involving other agents until he started getting texts and emails from family and co-workers back home who began hearing reports in the news.

After learning that other agents were caught engaging with prostitutes, the Dallas officers talked about it and agreed that it “sucks to be them,” an investigative report states.

Jewish Anti-Occupation Activists Stand With Black Lives Matter*

Jewish Anti-Occupation Activists Stand With Black Lives Matter*

By Wilson Dizard

The Black Lives Matter movement’s advocacy for Palestinians has caused a rift to open over Israel between younger and older American Jews, and there’s no sign of it mending any time soon.

This week, activists from Jewish Voice for Peace and other groups stood behind Black Lives Matter while more conservative parts of the American Jewish community condemned the movement after it criticized Israeli policies towards Palestinians, which it characterized as “genocide,” and endorsed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in a newly-released platform titled “Vision for Black Lives.” It’s the latest example of how the growing Palestinian rights movement has driven a wedge in the American Jewish community. The controversy follows familiar pattern, activists say, of punishment for disloyalty to Israel.

In its platform, Black Lives Matter called for the U.S. government to stop supplying military aid to Israel, which it uses to further the occupation of Palestinian territory. The statement from the Movement for Black Lives, signed by dozens of affiliated groups, framed the question as an issue of civil rights just as it does its own movement.

“The U.S. justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people,” the statement read.

“Israel is an apartheid state with over 50 laws on the books that sanction discrimination against the Palestinian people. Palestinian homes and land are routinely bulldozed to make way for illegal Israeli settlements. Israeli soldiers also regularly arrest and detain Palestinians as young as 4 years old without due process. Everyday, Palestinians are forced to walk through military checkpoints along the US-funded apartheid wall.”

The statement elicited outrage from groups like the Jewish Community Relations Council of Boston, which said in a statement on Wednesday that it planned to “dissociate” itself from Black Lives Matter.

“To conflate the experiences of African-Americans and Palestinians oversimplifies complex matters and advances false equivalencies that diminish the unique nature of each,” read the statement, signed by JCRC Boston President Adam Suttin and Executive Director Jeremy Burton.

“JCRC cannot and will not align ourselves with organizations that falsely and maliciously assert that Israel is committing ‘genocide.’”

While it pursued “dissociation” from Black Lives Matter, the group said it would still support racial equality and fair policing in the United States.

“As we dissociate ourselves from the Black Lives Matter platform and those Black Lives Matter  organizations that embrace it, we recommit ourselves unequivocally to the pursuit of justice for all Americans, and to working together with our friends and neighbours in the African-American community, whose experience of the criminal justice system is, far too often, determined by race,” adding that black Americans in remain “cherished partners here in Boston, a community that has staunchly supported Israel’s existence and rights as a nation.”

The Black Lives Matter platform also received push back from more left wing groups than JCRC, including T’ruah: The Rabbinical Call for Human rights. They too bristled at the word “genocide,” saying that while what Israel does to Palestinians is worthy of condemnation, it doesn’t qualify as “genocide,” a punishable criminal violation of international humanitarian law.

Israel’s “military occupation does not rise to the level of genocide—a term defined as ‘the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.’ While we agree that the occupation violates the human rights of Palestinians, and has caused too many deaths, the Israeli government is not carrying out a plan intended to wipe out the Palestinians. There is no basis for comparing this situation to the genocides of the 20th century, such as those in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, or Armenia, or the Nazi Holocaust in Europe, each of which constituted a calculated plan to destroy specific groups, and each of which killed hundreds of thousands to millions of people,” the organization’s statement reads.

To Jewish American activists working for Palestinian rights, these kind of statements bear a hypocrisy that will further alienate them from what they call the Jewish American Establishment.

Two young women, part of IfNotNow, an anti-Occupation protest group that staged a protest at ADL’s offices over Passover, identified JCRC with the Establishment that they say is putting roadblocks to peace and human rights between Israelis and Palestinians, and now in the United States.

“JCRC’s statement distancing itself from the Movement for Black Lives because that movement dares to criticize the Israeli occupation provides further evidence of how out of touch the leadership of the American Jewish establishment truly is,” wrote Ally Little and Michelle Weiser in an opinion piece for the Forward titled: “Don’t like Black Lives Matter? Get ready to lose young Jews like us.”

“JCRC is obstructing racial justice work, erasing black Jews, and attempting to maintain a status quo of Jews who are progressive on all issues except for Palestine,” they added.

Rabbi Brant Rosen takes on the T’ruah statement, which he says he finds, “much more disturbing than the one released by the Boston JCRC. While the latter group has always sought to counter the growth of the BLM movement, T’ruah purports to stand in solidarity with them.” Rosen continues, “T’ruah does not give the BLM ‘the benefit of the doubt’ when it issues an immediate counter-statement such as this; tantamount to a group in a position of power saying to an oppressed group, ‘we will stand in solidarity with you but only on our terms.’”

One striking contrast between the words of JCRC and of the activists is that they recognize that some Jews in the United States are people of colour too, while JCRC treats the two groups as separate. Jewish Voice for Peace, another activist organization that marched with Black Lives Matter in Philadelphia last week during the Democratic National Convention, said it both endorsed the platform “without reservation,” and was starting to work with Jews of Color in Solidarity with Palestine, another group. The JVP statement says,

“These Jewish organizations are rejecting a thorough and inspiring transformational set of policy ideas developed by a broad coalition of Black leaders simply because these Black leaders have explicitly linked the experiences and struggles of Palestinians with their own.”

In their statement, JVP recognizes its own leadership is made of European, Ashkenazi, Jews. and was modifying its tactics with that in mind.

“Because the leadership team of JVP is currently all white Ashkenazi Jews, we are slowing down to ensure our members who are Jews of Colour can lead the way, particularly in matters of racial justice,” the statement reads.

“This is part of our ongoing project to dismantle white supremacy inside of JVP.”

Jewish people advocating for civil rights of people of colour is nothing new in American politics. Indeed, two Jewish civil rights workers, Andrew Goodman and Mickey Schwerner, both New Yorkers, along with black Mississippian activists James Chaney, were executed and buried by the Ku Klux Klan in Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964. Their crime was attempting to register black voters, a direct challenge to White supremacy in the state.

At that time, however, Jewish identity in the United States had not become entangled with loyalty to Israel, and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip had not even begun. That occupation, Black Lives Matter activists say, resembles what they see in their own communities in the U.S. That the word “genocide” would find its way into the language of their criticism of these repressive policies is not surprising. Indeed, one Chicago police reform group is called “We Charge Genocide.” But that word, one that had to be invented after the holocaust to describe the monumental crime, elicits outrage from groups who stand by Israel and dismiss criticism against the troubled Middle Eastern country as not recognizing the “complexity” or the situation.

“By dismissing the entire platform over its critique of Israel, JCRC is complicit in perpetuating both racism and the occupation while standing in the way of black liberation,” write Little and Weiser in the Forward.

“The Jewish community can’t keep boasting about our involvement in the civil rights movement while giving half-hearted support to the civil rights movement alive in our streets today. We can’t let the knee-jerk dismissal of any criticism of Israel force white Jews to choose between being part of the Jewish community and standing with black lives,” they write.

Amid all this, Jews of colour have to navigate a world in which Ashkenazi Jews typically occupy positions of privilege in American society, just as white Christians do. The Ashkenazi Jewish establishment, as identified by JVP and others, is now having to start answering to Jews who do not consider themselves white.

Rachel Angel, 25, is an American Jew from Miami, and part of IfNotNow. She is of Sephardic descent, and her grandparents, spoke Ladino, a melange of Hebrew and Spanish.

The holocaust killed most of the people in the Jewish village Thessaloniki. When they came to Coney Island, Russian Jews denied their Jewish identity. With tan skin, she gets questioned about her Jewish bona fides.

“I guess it I just feel like I don’t fit in anywhere,” she said.

“Because I feel like in a lot of ways Jews have become ‘White’. People question me about my ethnicity.”

Angel added that, beyond skin colour, allegiance to Israel has become the barometer for legitimacy as a Jew, at least in the eyes of the Jewish establishment. That sentiment trickles down to personal relationships too. Angel cited dissenting Jews like Bernie Sanders and Simone Zimmerman as examples of victims of a “witch hunt” by Jews against fellow Jews.

“It’s happened to me. I’ve lost friends for being vocal about my values,” she said. Hardest is the contradiction between Jews proudly wearing the patch of social justice advocacy, but not extending that to Palestinians. Angel feels it is hypocritical to pay lip service to civil rights for black Americans, but not extend that same sympathy to Palestinians, especially when Jews have suffered so much under white supremacist systems themselves.

“It puts you in a cognitive dissonance. I didn’t grow up being ‘white’,” she said.

“I also don’t really identify as a person of colour, but I also don’t identify as white,” she explained.

“I feel like I can’t stand with these racist-ass people when the tribalism gets pushed so far because of this obsession with Israel.”

JCRC did not reply to a request for comment for this article.’

Unvaccinated Children Seem Immune to Mysterious Virus Spreading in the Midwest*

Unvaccinated Children Seem Immune to Mysterious Virus Spreading in the Midwest*

INQUISITR – The mysterious virus known as EV-D68 had spread across the Midwest at a rapid rate.

Many children had been hospitalized with the virus, about 475 in Kansas City alone, and there is no known vaccine to lessen the effects of the virus or protect those that had yet to acquire it.
EV-D68 had created an outbreak in Colorado, Missouri, Utah, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, and four more states in the Midwest.

The symptoms can mimic those of the influenza virus, but can have a much more dire impact on those that fall ill. Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, the hospital’s division director for infectious disease shared her concern with CNN.

“It’s worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I’ve practiced for 30 years in paediatrics, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this,”

Although there is no known vaccine for the virus, and the scope which it will reach is also unknown, those that BECAME INFECTED are following a COMMON THEME. They have ALL BEEN VACCINATED with the MMR vaccines, influenza vaccines, and polio vaccines.

Of course, many children in the United States have been vaccinated, and most are required to be vaccinated in order to enter school. However, it is interesting to note that the illness is not occurring, yet, in children that have not been vaccinated.

William Shaffner, head of Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University, has not shared that EV-D68 has only infected vaccinated children, but does share his concern about the virus.

“Most enteroviruses cause either a little bit of a cold or a diarrheal illness — a few cause meningitis. This one is the, if you will, odd cousin. It causes prominent respiratory symptoms. Why it does that, we’re really not sure.”

There is no doubt that the outbreak of EV-D68 quite scary, and may be more dangerous that the RSV virus outbreak of the late 1990’s.

Many parents are wondering what they can do to keep their children protected and shield them from contracting the virus. CNN shared the following information to help keep your kids safe.

“To reduce the risk of infection, individuals should wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers; avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick; disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as toys and doorknobs; and stay home when feeling sick…”

Some reporting agencies are also recommending the use of Vitamin D, a natural immune system booster, to help strengthen the immune system prior to the virus reaching individuals.

So far, states that are surrounded by the virus, such as Indiana and Michigan, seem to be safe from the outbreak. Only time will tell if it will continue to spread, or eventually die off like the avian flu did.

Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer Increases Fatal Risks for Black Men, by 77%*

Hormone Therapy for Prostate Cancer Increases Fatal Risks for Black Men, by 77%*

By David Love

There is a saying that one size doesn’t fit all. And apparently this holds true for medical treatments for prostate cancer.  Hormone therapy to combat the disease may pose a higher risk of death in Black men, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, examined the medical records of 1,500 men from the Chicago Prostate Center, as The Washington Post reported.  These men, of which 7% were Black, had low-to-intermediate risk prostate cancer and were treated with Androgen deprivation therapy, or ADT.  ADT is a hormone treatment used to reduce malignant tumours in the prostate by lowering a patient’s testosterone levels.  Androgens, or male hormones, are required for the proper growth of the prostate, which helps in the production of semen.  However, androgens also promote the growth of prostate cancer. The hormone therapy used for prostate cancer, also known as androgen suppression therapy or androgen deprivation therapy, can reduce androgen production in the testicles and block the production of androgens in the body, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The Brigham and Women’s research found that Black men had a % greater risk of death than their white counterparts, and had a higher risk of death as early as four months after treatment.  Further, Black men tended to be younger, were treated later, and had a higher incidence of other health issues, as The Post reported.

Black men have a consistently higher risk of death from prostate cancer.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1999 and 2013, Black men were more likely to die from prostate cancer than any other racial or ethnic group, followed by white, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander men.

However, in the BWM study, the cancer itself did not kill these African-American men.  Rather, researchers say the deaths appear to be linked to cardiovascular problems prior to their diagnosis, with ADT increasing the risk of a heart attack.

“When African-American men were exposed to an average of only four months of hormone therapy, primarily used to make the prostate small enough for brachytherapy, they suffered from higher mortality rates due to causes other than prostate cancer than non-African American men,” said Konstantin Kovtun, MD, a resident at BWH who worked on the study, as reported by News-Medical.net.

Brachytherapy is a cancer treatment in which radioactive implants are placed directly into the tissue.

“This leads us to believe that there may be something intrinsic to the biology of African-American men that predisposes them to this increased risk of death and that this deserves further study.”

“These results show that careful consideration should be taken by physicians when recommending treatment for low or favourable-intermediate prostate cancer, a cancer that very few men die of even without treatment,” added Anthony D’Amico, MD, PhD, chief of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology at BWH.

“There is no evidence that ADT followed by brachytherapy increases the chance of cure in comparison to other treatments, such an external beam radiation therapy alone, in these men with favourable risk prostate cancer. The subsequent risks of ADT, specifically linked to African-American men, deserve further study,” he added. The research findings were published in the August 4, 2016 issue of Cancer.

Atlanta Black Star has reported that clinical trials in the U.S. do not reflect the diversity of the country.  Although these medical tests determine what medications will be given to the general public, Black and brown people generally are not participants in these clinical trials. And given the country’s shameful history of using Black people as human guinea pigs in medical experiments, African-Americans are understandably reluctant to participate in the research.  As a result, white participants, especially white men, predominate in the studies, even as research has shown that Blacks, Asians and others respond differently to medications when compared to whites.

A prime example of the consequences of excluding Black people from clinical trials involves the treatment of asthma.  Most genetic and environmental studies on asthma in children have focused on white patients, raising serious questions as to whether the known risk factors for asthma even apply to Black children at all.  While 14% of Black children have asthma, only 8% of white children have the condition.  Meanwhile, a study of 800 Black asthmatic children found that only 5% of the genetic variations associated with asthma in whites were present in Blacks.

E.U. Blocks Brexit with a €25bn Debt*

E.U. Blocks Brexit with a €25bn Debt*

Britain will have to pay the European Union a hefty sum if it is to follow through with Brexit, with claims that an estimated €25 billion is owed to the bloc in unpaid bills.

An outstanding total of €200 billion (£170 billion, $221 billion) has been shifted around by the E.U. for years, under what Brussels’ mandarins call the “reste à liquider.”

An unnamed senior E.U. official told German finance website WirtschaftsWoche the British slice of the debt would not be simply written off if Westminster invokes the much debated E.U. exit clause, Article 50.

“A deal with Great Britain is unthinkable until the Brits settle this liability,” said the source.

However, in the European Commission some lawyers believe the amount would default once Brexit takes place.

Britain reportedly contributes around £136 million a week to the common European pot. Between 2016 and 2020 the total contribution would amount to £45.3 billion, according to the Guardian.

But it was not quite that easy to calculate how much each member state owed the joint account, a European Commission spokeswoman told the paper.

“Outstanding commitments are not debt. No member state has outstanding debts to the E.U. budget,” she said.

A Whitehall representative echoed the sentiment.

“We are about to begin these negotiations and it would be wrong to set out unilateral positions in advance. Brexit means Brexit and we are going to make a success of it.”

Protests Continued through the Rio Games

Protests Continued through the Rio Games

From Alexandra Bruce

Upon his announcement of the opening of the Olympic Games at

Rio, Brazil’s Interim President was largely booed by an audience of 79,000 before the massive fireworks display from the edges of Maracanã Stadium drowned out the din of disapproval.

Small groups of demonstrators hoisting “Temer Out!” signs were seen outside of the stadium and a photo of legendary Brazilian musician, Caetano Veloso holding a “Temer Out!” sign was tweeted by his film producer wife backstage, prior to his performance in the opening ceremony. The tweet has since gone viral.

Michel Temer was recently fined the equivalent of $25,000 – and more importantly – barred from running for public office until 2024, due to his conviction on campaign fraud. Temer made contributions to his cronies’ campaigns exceeding 10% of his annual income, per his tax return, which is against the law in Brazil. (Wherever DID that money come from?)

So, regardless of whether or not sidelined President Dilma Rousseff survives her impeachment hearings, scheduled for later this month, Temer will not be allowed to run for President of Brazil, after Dilma’s term expires in 2018.

This is very much to the satisfaction of the vast majority of the Brazilian people. The corruption in Brazil’s politics is systematically being rooted out, both peacefully and legally, which is admirable and hopefully instructive as it unfurls on the world stage.

It would be interesting if the 2016 Olympic Games could be turned into an occasion for the citizens of bad governments, worldwide to celebrate their solidarity in despising their own tyrannies (Doubtful!)

For all of the doomsaying about the Rio Olympics, the opening ceremony went off without a hitch – Brazilians are actually quite good at this stuff – even if NBC has been criticized for producing a broadcast that actually managed to make Brazil look boring.

My prediction is that if anything “bad” happens during the Olympics over the next few weeks – and of course, it is my deepest wish that nothing does – it will NOT be due to any actions by Brazilians, who have demonstrated incredible reserve and fortitude during a very rough patch in their country’s politics and in a collapsed economy, where they cannot afford to be hosting this multi-billion-dollar event.

Rage in Rio

By Stephen Lendman

Held during dire economic times amidst massive corruption scandals, the Rio 2016 XXXI Olympiad began with a bang, its flamboyant opening ceremony blackened by justifiable street rage.

Sponsored by an illegitimate US-supported coup d’etat regime, the event’s dark side was exposed before competition began.

Russia’s entire track and field team was unfairly banned. Washington’s failed attempt to have all its athletes excluded over doping allegations against some showed the politicization of Olympic competition. At its best, it’s more spectacle than sport.

Police attacked hundreds of protesters near Maracana Stadium, site of Thursday night’s opening ceremony. They expressed justifiable anger against a coup d’etat regime, rife with corruption, attacking social justice, force-feeding neoliberal harshness, serving Brazil’s monied interests at the expense of most others.

Billions of dollars were spent on an extravaganza while millions of Brazilians languish in abject poverty. Favela slums near the Olympiad site reflect one of the world’s most unequal countries economically, its illegitimate regime making things worse, enriching themselves and their cronies at the expense of the nation’s most vulnerable.

Earlier on Thursday, thousands marched toward Afonso Pena Square. Others massed in front of the Copacabana Palace hotel, one of the city’s best, hosting some of the athletes.

Thousands supporting illegally suspended Dilma Rousseff protested against interim coup d’etat president Michel Temer, Wall Street’s man in charge, reviled by the vast majority of Brazilians – hooted and jeered when he said “I declare open the XXXI edition of the Olympic Games.”

Rousseff was absent Thursday night, saying “I don’t think it’s appropriate that the ousted president should attend a ceremony that is led by an illegitimate president.”

Days earlier protests forced the Olympic Games Organizing Committee to change the event’s torch final route to Maracana Stadium.

Protests continue rocking Brazil following Rousseff’s illegal suspension last May. The nation was militarized leading up to and continuing for the duration of the games, concluding on August 21.

A raucous three weeks ahead is likely, police state harshness attempting to prevent public anger from interfering with Olympic competition – more about profiteering and exploitation than sport.
