U.S. Special Ops Fighter Caught Leading ISIS in Iraq*

U.S. Special Ops Fighter Caught Leading ISIS in Iraq*

By Tyler Durden

Just days after the news hit that ISIS’ main propaganda officer, Mohammad al-Adnani, one of the Islamic State’s most prominent leaders, the second in command of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as well as the unofficial spokesman of the terrorist organization, was killed (with a scandal promptly erupting between the U.S. and Russia over who had taken him out), the power vacuum that formed at the top of the Islamic State has been promptly filled, after former Tajik Special Forces colonel Gulmurod Khalimov became the top ISIS battlefield commander in Iraq, after defecting last year and swearing jihad against the West.

Gulmurod Khalimov

Khalimov is set to take the position vacated by Abu Omar al-Shishani, also known as Omar the Chechen, who was killed in the Iraqi city of Shirqat, south of Mosul. in early July and whom the Pentagon described as Islamic State’s “minister of war.”

What makes the ascent of Khalimov particularly embarrassing for the U.S. is that The former paramilitary unit commander of the Tajikistan armed forces received his battlefield training from American advisors and even came to the United States on several occasions to receive special counterterrorism training through the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security/Anti-Terrorism Assistance program.

Then last year, Khalimov defected to ISIS where the Daesh forces in Iraq welcomed the new addition to their ranks with open arms especially since he was acquainted with US military and intelligence tactics. Subsequently, the American trained former Special Forces colonel Gulmurod Khalimov received a promotion within the terrorist organization, and has become the group’s Iraqi battlefield commander just weeks after ISIS refused to officially announce that Khalimov had been promoted to the top ranks of the terrorist organization out of concern that he would become a high-priority target of US led strikes in Iraq, but Iraq’s Al Sumaria news agency exposed the promotion through a source in Nineveh province.

The placement of Khalimov to lead the terror organization’s Iraqi forces is a bit unusual for the Islamic State, who normally maintain only “second and third ranking commanders who lead militants in [Nineveh] province,” according to the Al Sumaria source. These Daesh militants tend to keep a low-profile to prevent being “detected and destroyed” by U.S. Forces who remain in a support function in Iraq explained the source.

Khalimov’s high profile defection has understandably been a concern for U.S. officials for some time, with the US State Department labeling him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224 on September 29, 2015 designed to prevent the transfer of currency to individuals known to hold leadership roles in terror organizations. The United Nations Security Council Resolutions and al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee further added Khalimov, who is also a fugitive wanted by the Government of Tajikstan, to its sanctions list in February 2016.

In any case, as has so often been the case in the recent past, a special ops military expert by the US, is now engaged in deadly combat with his former teacher; further adding to the paradox, his weapons and supplies have also been provided by the US: an odd outcome which, as many have pointed out, benefits just one group: the shareholders of the U.S. military-industrial complex, which always wins no matter who, or how many lives are lost.

U.N. to Send 4,000 Soldiers to South Sudan despite Govt. Opposition*

By Jim W. Dean

By Thomas Mattingly, with Press TV

Editor’s Note:  The Sudan-South Sudan struggle seems like one that will compete historically with some if the European ones like the Thirty Year’s War, the kind where the civilians suffer disproportionately.

This increase in the U.N. forces over the objection of the country is showing quite a turn in events. Usually these Africa wars are “allowed” to drag on to keep the region destabilized as a disincentive for major resource extraction investment.

The continent itself is sitting on an ocean of oil, which would keep oil prices tanked for over a 100 years if the production was brought on line. Paying for Boko Haram’s guns, ammo and satellite phones is a much cheaper way for the big commodity concerns to maintain their profit margins, which they surely intend to do, by hook or by crook.

Sudan seems to be reaching a tipping point and PressTV has picked up another VT talent with Thomas Mattingly, one of those quiet behind the scenes people who have been on the ground with some of these faraway conflicts and involved with advising the governments.

Thomas was part of the VT team that we took Syria a few weeks before the Russian air campaign got cranked up full bore. He was also with us when the Grand Mufti invited us by for our last visit of that trip.

We live in an age where too many try to do it all at long distance, but where there is no substitute for boots on the ground where you can build the personal relationships to get hard, realistic input from those who are in the middle of these disputes, day in and day outJim W. Dean]

Endless war – for those who can least afford it

The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution for the deployment of an additional 4000 troops to South Sudan.

The U.S.-drafted resolution was adopted with 11 votes in favour and four abstentions by Russia, China, Egypt and Venezuela. The more robust resolution allows peacekeepers more power. South Sudan has rejected the U.N. resolution and says it will not cooperate with the United Nations.

It had earlier agreed to accept the extra troops as a separate force from the regional Ee-GAD bloc, but not under the mandate of the United Nations. The government’s position raises the possibility of clashes between blue helmets and the country’s armed forces. The resolution threatens to impose an arms embargo if the government blocks the deployment.

Muslim World Reacts to assigning Hajj Security to Israelis*

Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, Al-Aqsa’s Mosque preacher has warned against Israel’s penetration into Arab and Islamic society through this company and pointed out that providing security for Hajj pilgrims by Israeli intelligence and security corporation is not permissible or advisable.

G4S, is an English Israel – linked corporation, which is assigned with the task of providing security for Haj pilgrimage, Israel’s radio website reported.

This Internet source said, Saudi government has signed a contract  with this Israeli corporation in order to provide Hajj security، during which electronic bracelets are put around Pilgrims’ wrists upon their arrival up to their departure.

This bracelet, equipped with advanced cutting – edge technology, allows foreign intelligence organizations which have strategic relations with Saudi to locate Hajis- Haj Pilgrims – whenever they desire.

This corporation has several branches across Saudi Arabia, in such cities as: Jeddah, Ta’if, Riyadh, and at the time of the events, security operations staff of the Saudi intelligence organization have to obtain information from this Israeli corporation.

This decision regarding Hajj security has already sparked complaints from Muslim scholars over the past years.

Another document suggests that Saudi government has also signed a contract with this corporation in order to defend its Southern borders against Houthis attacks.

It is noteworthy to say that G4S is responsible for providing security for Israel regime’s prisons and has equipped this regime with a variety of torture devices as it played an active role in suppressing the Palestinian captives.

Nicolas Sarkozy to Stand Trial for ‘financing an illegal election campaign’*

Nicolas Sarkozy to Stand Trial for ‘financing an illegal election campaign’*

By Peter Allen

Nicolas Sarkozy is set to stand criminal trial for running a corrupt campaign to become president of France.

It comes after Paris prosecutors placed the 61-year-old conservative under formal investigation for illegal financing, and recommended he should appear as a defendant in court.

Despite the ongoing enquiry, the leader of the Republic Party was convinced he could still become head of state again next year.

Now, however, Mr Sarkozy is expected to reconsider his options after being indicted for ‘financing an illegal campaign’, which could carry a prison sentence.

Alleged false accounting, fraud and breach of trust are all elements in the so-called Bygmalion Affair.

Bygmalion was the PR firm which handled the notoriously self-promoting Mr Sarkozy’s appearances during his failed 2012 re-election campaign.

It is said to have used a vast system of false accounting to conceal an alleged explosion of funding for his campaign.

It exceeded the legal limit for funds of £18.5 million, with Mr Sarkozy’s team spending the equivalent of at least £33 million.
Mr Sarkozy’s lawyer Thierry Herzog said earlier this year that ‘there was nothing linking President Nicolas Sarkozy to the Bygmalion case.’

However, the investigation kept Mr Sarkozy, who is still allowed to use his ‘president’ title after serving a single term of office in the role between 2007 and 2012, tied up in legal proceedings.

The Paris home Mr Sarkozy shares with his third wife, the model and pop singer Carla Bruni, was raided by fraud squad officers within a week of him standing down four years ago.

This was because French presidents are immune from prosecution while in office, and they can only be indicted once they leave office.

Following the prosecutor’s recommendation that Sarkozy should stand trial, investigating magistrates have one month to make the final decision on whether the case should come to court.

The ruling could come just days before presidential primaries of Mr Sarkozy’s Republicans party – held on November 20 and 27.

Mr Sarkozy’s only other hope of avoiding a trial in the short term is to win the presidential election next Spring.

He is under investigation in a range of other scandals too, including claims that he received £42 million from the late Colonel Gaddafi before he was elected in 2007.

French law bans candidates from receiving cash donations above £6,300, but the massive donation is said to have been laundered through bank accounts in Panama and Switzerland.

A document made public in Paris is said to show that the French leader and the former Libyan dictator made an illegal financial deal that propelled Mr Sarkozy to power.

French warplanes facilitated Gaddafi’s death during the Arab Spring revolt of 2011, and it has been alleged that Mr Sarkozy wanted him gone, along with all the evidence pointing to the donation.

The last French president to be tried as a criminal was Mr Sarkozy’s former mentor, Jacques Chirac.

In 2011, the former president was found guilty of diverting public funds and abusing public confidence, and received a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Despite his ongoing electoral ambitions, Mr Sarkozy is an increasingly unpopular figure in France, with opinion polls continually suggesting he should quit politics.

He has lurched increasingly to the right during his period of opposition as he tried to appeal to supporters of the anti-immigrant National Front.

Putin Cheats Death, but Leaves his Driver Dead*

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a close shave Tuesday as his official vehicle was involved in a deadly head-on crash in the country’s capital, Moscow.

The horrific accident in the centre of the city resulted in the death of long-serving presidential driver and Putin’s favourite chauffeur, Sun writes.

Putin, who was in China yesterday for a meeting of G20 leaders where he and United States President Barack Obama failed to agree on a peace deal for war-torn Syria, was however not in the vehicle.

Medics are said to have arrived quickly on the scene, but according to Russian media, the unnamed victim — who had more than 40 years’ driving experience — died on the spot.

Police are investigating the exact cause of the crash.

“The only way to resolve the crisis in Syria and to assist the victims of this conflict is to end the fighting, not to escalate it,” Veterans for Peace said.

The U.S.-based group Veterans for Peace issued a statement calling on the U.S. government to halt all military operations and intervention in Syria, while also warning against pundits who are using a recent photo of a child in Aleppo as a propaganda tool to urge a military escalation against the Syrian government.

“Recently, a compelling photo of a bleeding and seemingly confused young Syrian boy seated in an ambulance in Aleppo was widely distributed and commented upon in domestic and international news media,” the group said in a statement this week.

“In response, some journalists have called for the Obama Administration to ‘take action,’ including bombing government military targets in Syria.”

The group slammed such calls as a “manipulation of selected images of human suffering as propaganda used to justify yet further military violence, which will only lead to more death and suffering.”

It further urged the U.S. government to end all kinds of assistance to armed groups in the conflict in Syria.

“We call on the United States government to cease all military, political and economic assistance to armed opposition groups in Syria and to take actions to pressure U.S. allies to do the same.”

Pro-war “experts” on the Middle East have urged for no-fly zones and safe zones in Syria. The Turkish government, which shares a major border with Syria, has called for such zones since the beginning of the conflict in 2012.

However, the former U.S. soldiers said such zones would actually put the U.S. and its allies in direct conflict with Syrian government-backers such as Russia.

“’No-fly zones’ and ‘safe zones’ would put U.S. Air Force pilots in direct military confrontation with Russian Air Force pilots, leading to a dangerous military escalation between two nuclear powers—an existential threat to all life on earth.”

The statement further stressed that such a situation would lead to destruction and violence similar to what happened in Libya following the U.S.-led NATO intervention.

The group called the photo of the young Syrian boy “the latest and most graphic example of the psychological warfare being waged against public opinion in the U.S. and worldwide.”

For Veterans For Peace, the Syrian conflict isn’t good vs. bad as the mainstream media is presenting it, but in fact a “foreign intervention to destroy the last secular, multi-religious nation in the Middle East.”

Saudi Arabia and Qatar, major U.S. allies in the region, are supplying arms and money to the opposition groups in Syria, the statement added.

“We believe that the only way to resolve the crisis in Syria and to assist the victims of this conflict is to end the fighting, not to escalate it,” the group said, adding that the U.S. should accept more Syrian refugees.

The Syrian government, the statement concluded, “has the right to defend itself from foreign aggression and the ‘regime change’ schemes of the United States and its allies,” while people in the U.S. “must take responsibility for the role of our own government.”

Pipeline Co. Bulldozing Burial Sites Prompts Emergency Motion*

Pipeline Co. Bulldozing Burial Sites Prompts Emergency Motion*

By Lauren McCauley

In a last ditch attempt to protect burial and prayer sites, North Dakota’s Standing Rock Sioux late Sunday filed for a temporary restraining order to halt construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which they say has already caused “irreparable harm” to the sacred plots.

“On Saturday, Dakota Access Pipeline and Energy Transfer Partners brazenly used bulldozers to destroy our burial sites, prayer sites and culturally significant artefacts,” said tribal chairman David Archambault II in a press statement.

“They did this on a holiday weekend, one day after we filed court papers identifying these sacred sites,” Archambault added.

“The desecration of these ancient places has already caused the Standing Rock Sioux irreparable harm. We’re asking the court to halt this path of destruction.”

The emergency motion came after security forces hired by the pipeline company attacked Indigenous demonstrators with dogs and pepper spray on Saturday.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, tribal member and activist Linda Black Elk said that it’s clear that the pipeline company is trying to “provoke” the peaceful resisters “to violence.”

Black Elk wrote:

“Just to recap: On Friday, the Standing Rock Nation filed papers challenging Dakota Access permits from the Army Corps of Engineers’… because in a recent survey of the area, the tribe found many incredibly sacred sites, including burial sites, directly in the path of the proposed pipeline. The tribe had never been allowed to survey these areas before, so they hadn’t been able to document these sites.

Today, barely 24 hours after those papers were filed, Dakota Access used bulldozers to destroy those sites. It was absolute destruction. They literally bulldozed the ancestors right out of the ground, along with destroying tipi rings and cairns. They did all of this while assaulting peaceful resistors using vicious dogs, tear gas, and pepper spray.”

“There’s only one conclusion,” Black Elk added, “they are attempting to provoke us to violence.”

The ongoing tribal protest against the Dakota Access pipeline has drawn thousands of supporters, including representatives from more than 200 tribes, and garnered increasing media attention. And a federal judge is currently weighing whether construction should be stopped altogether, in response to a complaint filed by the tribe, which argues that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved the project without their consent. That decision is expected by Sept. 9.

“The Tribe has been seeking to vindicate its rights peacefully through the courts. But Dakota Access Pipeline used evidence submitted to the Court as their roadmap for what to bulldoze. That’s just wrong,” said Jan Hasselman, attorney for the Standing Rock Sioux.

“Destroying the Tribe’s sacred places over a holiday weekend, while the judge is considering whether to block the pipeline, shows a flagrant disregard for the legal process,” Hasselman added.

LaDonna Bravebull Allard, historic preservation office for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s Section 106, noted in a piece published at YES! Magazine that

“Of the 380 archaeological sites that face desecration along the entire pipeline route, from North Dakota to Illinois, 26 of them are right here at the confluence of these two rivers,” the Cannonball and the Missouri.

“It is a historic trading ground,” Bravebull Allard wrote,

“a place held sacred not only by the Sioux Nations, but also the Arikara, the Mandan, and the Northern Cheyenne.”

What’s more, she highlighted how this latest affront is part of a legacy of the U.S. government erasing Indigenous culture through the destruction of their sacred sites.

“The U.S. government is wiping out our most important cultural and spiritual areas. And as it erases our footprint from the world, it erases us as a people,” she continued.

“These sites must be protected, or our world will end, it is that simple. Our young people have a right to know who they are. They have a right to language, to culture, to tradition. The way they learn these things is through connection to our lands and our history.”

Finally, she posed the question:

“If we allow an oil company to dig through and destroy our histories, our ancestors, our hearts and souls as a people, is that not genocide?”
