Obama Just Protected Planned Parenthood Funding Permanently*

Obama Just Protected Planned Parenthood Funding Permanently*

By Alexis Henning

State funding for Planned Parenthood may no longer deny any service, including abortions.

Yesterday was a huge day for women in the United States everywhere, as the Obama Administration has made sure that states will no longer be allowed to deny funding for abortion services at Planned Parenthood. According to a new rule [PDF] regarding Title X funding (which affects preventative healthcare and family planning services to over 4 million low-income Americans), states are now completely forbidden from withholding Title X family planning money for any reason whatsoever.

That means that the original rules that forbade using any of the Title X funding for abortion services are now illegal. The bottom line is that states can’t even VOTE to defund Planned Parenthood just because their clinics offer abortion services.

Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, said:

“This will make a real difference in so many people’s lives. Thanks to the Obama Administration, [low income] women will still be able to access the birth control they need to plan their families, and the cancer screenings they need to stay healthy.”

Investigation on Planned Parenthood’s “Debunked” Videos

11 states have voted to block public funds from Planned Parenthood because its services included abortion. Republican Diane Black, who is in the process of producing another expensive House committee investigation into the videos that have already been proven fabricated and edited, is up in arms over the decision. She commented:

“We must use the full force of Congress and grassroots strength of the [Catholic] pro-life movement to defeat this absurd rule and prevent the Obama Administration from carrying out political favours and prop up a scandal-ridden abortion provider.”

Someone should tell Diane Black that the Catholic Church is not in charge of the United States.

The new Title X rule will become permanent after a 30-day public comment period, but will be the end of religious attacks against federally-funded abortion services in the United States.

An Elementary School Has Kids Meditate Instead of Punishing Them and the Results are Profound*

It was recently reported that Robert W. Coleman Elementary in West Baltimore will be taking a new and holistic approach to disciplining students. Instead of punishing them or sending them to the principal’s office, administrators will now be sending children to “the mindful moment room” where they will be able to meditate and wind down.

The new policy has been in place for over a year, and in the time that the meditation room has been set up, there has actually been no suspensions throughout the entire year.

The program is an initiative organized by the Holistic Life Foundation, a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization committed to nurturing the wellness of children and adults in underserved communities.

Andres Gonzalez, one of the organizers of the project, says that children are even bringing home what they are learning to their families.

“That’s how you stop the trickle-down effect, when Mom or Pops has a hard day and yells at the kids, and then the kids go to school and yell at their friends,” he says.

“We’ve had parents tell us, ‘I came home the other day stressed out, and my daughter said, Hey, Mom, you need to sit down. I need to teach you how to breathe,‘” Gonzalez said.

There are many advantages to meditation, which are now being confirmed by scientific studies. We have learned through scientific research that meditation can relieve pain, enhance creativity, relieve stress and boost immune systems. In 1998, a breakthrough study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, by a DR. Dean Ornish showed that meditation can actually reverse heart disease. This study lasted for over 5 years and involved various control groups that all had coronary artery disease, and only one of these groups practiced meditation. Amazingly the group that practiced meditation had actually managed to reverse the effects of the illness.

The consistent application of bringing one’s attention to the present moment is key to any form of meditation. This means that nearly any experience can be meditative. A bike ride, a walk under the stars, writing poetry, or any practice that offers individual quiet time within your own heart and mind can be considered a form of meditation.

Over time, various teachers organized their specific meditation practices into cohesive styles and philosophies, each with its own instructions and insights. Around the 5th and 6th centuries BCE, Confucian and Taoist meditations appear in China, and Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist meditations developed in India.

These various schools of meditation taught different methods for remaining in the present moment, some involving the counting of breaths, contemplative thought, or repeating sacred words and sounds known as Mantras.

There are also different types of meditation positions. Some schools practice sitting cross-legged (“lotus” or “half lotus”), walking, or lying down meditation. You also may have noticed that certain traditions will feature symbolic hand gestures and positions during their meditation. These are known as mudras and are found in Hindu and Buddhist practices. People also meditate for different reasons. Most people would say that meditation can be a religious or spiritual experience, while others find it to be a helpful relaxation and anger management tool.

In this one Baltimore school, the powers of living in the present are coming to fruition.

300,000 Protest in Germany against NWO Trade Deals*

Hundreds of thousands took to city streets across Germany on Saturday as they marched against a pair of corporate-backed trade deals they say will undermine democracy, attack workers and local economies, and accelerate the threats posed by corporate hegemony and global warming.

Taking aim at both the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), European Union deals with the United States and Canada respectively, opponents say the agreements are not really concerned with expanding trade but rather increasing corporate power.

“CETA and TTIP threaten environmental and consumer protection for millions of people in Europe and North America,” said Jennifer Morgan, co-executive director of Greenpeace International.  “These agreements will weaken food safety laws, environmental legislation, banking regulations and undermine the sovereign powers of nations.”

In a tweeted video, Morgan added:

From the #ttipdemo in Berlin I call on European leaders to listen to their people and #StopCetaTTIP @GreenpeaceEU

— Jennifer Morgan (@climatemorgan) September 17, 2016

Though TTIP negotiations, as Common Dreams reported, were said to have “de facto failed” last month, U.S. President Barack Obama has vowed to see the deal approved. And despite widespread opposition German Chancellor Angela Merkel also remains supportive.

Despite the precarious negotiations, the people in the streets on Saturday appear unwilling to take any chances. As those who spoke with the BBC indicated:

“‘I want us to get rid of TTIP and for European social and environmental standards to be respected, maintained and improved,’ said Peter Clausing in Berlin.

“Many demonstrators think the deal would lead to exploitation of people by businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

“‘It will be the enterprises and banks that will have power over people worldwide,’ said Tobias Kuhn. ‘That is a no-go. People need to know that and we will protest until there’s no chance of that happening anymore.’”

Pro-Israel Donor Suspended by U.K.’s Labour Party*

Pro-Israel Donor Suspended by U.K.’s Labour Party*

Michael Foster outside the High Court, 26 July. He wanted to remove Jeremy Corbyn from the leadership ballot.

Peter Nicholls Reuters

A millionaire donor to the U.K.’s Labour Party has been suspended by party officials after lashing out at supporters of left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn as Nazis.

The BBC reported on Sunday that Michael Foster had been suspended for breaching party rules prohibiting abuse.

Foster is a supporter of Israel, and last year heckled a speech where Corbyn urged a lifting of Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

A letter from general secretary Iain McNicol notifying Foster of his suspension cited an article written by Foster in the Mail on Sunday, the BBC reported.

In that article, published in August, Foster raged against Corbyn and his Nazi “stormtroopers.”

Foster had been so outraged at Jeremy Corbyn’s history of Palestine solidarity activism that he attempted to use his millions to fix this year’s leadership election against him.

Foster took the Labour Party to court in July in an effort to force Corbyn off the ballot.

Foster received some backlash for his article, even among other anti-Palestinian propagandists.

One member of the executive of the Jewish Labour Movement – a pro-Israel group of party members – wrote that Foster’s remarks were “regrettable, and there is a strong case to argue that he should retract them.” Nazi analogies should not be made, Jay Stoll wrote in a Times of Israel blog post.

One of the concluding recommendations of the Chakrabarti Inquiry into allegations of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party states that Labour members should “resist the use of Hitler, Nazi and Holocaust comparison.”

But Foster doubled down instead of apologizing.

In a second article in the Tel Aviv daily Haaretz, Foster wrote that “Corbyn, like all tyrants … will fall” and that “the Holocaust is my history … I will use it when I see an analogy in front of me.”

Foster’s suspension comes amidst mounting evidence of thousands of politically motivated suspensions of Labour Party members and supporters – most of whom are pro-Corbyn.

In August, shadow chancellor John McDonnell accused Labour headquarters of a “rigged purge” against Corbyn, after it suspended Ronnie Draper, the head of the bakers’ union.

Draper is a noted pro-Corbyn figure and the union he is elected to lead has been one of Corbyn’s most active supporters.

McDonnell said that

“Labour party members will not accept” the purge, and cited Labour headquarters’ inaction over Foster’s “stormtroopers” article as evidence that McNicol’s team is biased against Corbyn.

Just received email lifting my suspension from Labour Party. Another vote for @jeremycorbyn @NSSN_AntiCuts @resistunite #bfawu @TUCGinfo

— Ronnie Draper (@Ronniebfawu) September 9, 2016

The suspension of Foster on Sunday probably represents a concession by party officials towards the leader’s office. Draper’s suspension was also lifted last week.

Showbiz agent

Michael Foster made his millions as a show business agent for actors including Sacha Baron Cohen and Hugh Grant. Foster apparently still represents radio host Chris Evans.

He has donated more than $533,000 to the Labour Party over the years. This includes tens of thousands to Liz Kendall, the Blairite leadership candidate in last year’s election contest (she came last with 4.5 percent).

He tried his hand at politics by running as a Labour parliamentary candidate in Cornwall during last year’s general election, but was beaten by his Conservative rival.

During that campaign, Foster reportedly harassed a female rival candidate as a “cunt” and threatened to “destroy” her.

‘Say the word #Israel‘ – Man heckles Jeremy Corbyn at Labour Friends of Israel event at #labconf15 v @matt_dathan

— Joseph Willits (@josephwillits) September 29, 2015

At a Labour Friends of Israel reception last year, Foster drew attention to himself by standing on a chair and heckling Corbyn by screaming “Oi! Oi! Say the word ‘Israel!’”

Freshly elected leader, Corbyn had told the assembled audience that the siege of Gaza must end.

In his recent Haaretz article, Foster wrote that he was a supporter of former Labour leader Tony Blair. Blair has been a staunch supporter of Israel’s military attacks on Lebanon and Gaza that inquiries by the U.N. and independent organizations found involved large-scale war crimes.

The Haaretz article also notes in a postscript that Foster “works with Shaharit” – an Israeli think tank which openly operates in settlements built on stolen Palestinian land in the West Bank.

All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.

Court case

Foster’s contention that Corbyn needed the nomination of 51 Labour lawmakers to run for party leader again was rejected by the High Court in July.

A majority of Labour’s national executive had ruled that Corbyn, as the incumbent leader, did not need MPs’ nominations.

Corbyn is the run-away favourite to win an election contest for party leader, which was triggered in July.

An attempt by Labour MPs to oust Corbyn in June failed after party members and activists rallied behind Corbyn.

But in a separate case, in which Foster was not involved, the Court of Appeal ruled that almost 130,000 new Labour members who had joined since January could not vote in the current leadership election.

Corbyn’s leadership has brought an influx of new activists and supporters. Labour is now thought to be the largest political party in Europe, with more than half a million members.

Vote All You Want, the Secret Government Won’t Change*

Former congressman Ron Paul is outspoken. When he retired from Congress, he called lawmakers psychopathic authoritarians to their faces.

He’s also called Donald Trump an authoritarian and asserted Hillary Clinton could have run as a Republican. And just last week, Paul took aim at the foundational structure of American ‘democracy.’

In a recent episode of his web show, the Liberty Report, Ron Paul discussed the Department of Homeland Security’s decision last month to take a more active role in U.S. elections.

Secretary Jeh Johnson said he was “considering whether elections should be classified as ‘critical infrastructure,’ affording them the same kinds of enhanced protections that the banking system and the electrical grid receive,” POLITICO reported.

The potential move came on the heels of the notorious DNC leak in July, which exposed intentions within the Democratic Party to manipulate the primary race against Senator Bernie Sanders.

Politicians and the media quickly blamed the hack on Russia, failing to cite conclusive proof of their allegations yet spawning the narrative that the Kremlin and other foreign threats could compromise U.S. elections.

On his show, Paul took issue with the notion that the Department of Homeland Security, an agency riddled with incompetence and failed objectives — case in point, the TSA — is capable of securing U.S. elections.

Speaking on DHS’s decision to become more involved in the process following the DNC hack, Ron Paul offered a scathing indictment of the federal organization, arguing it will capitalize on troubling events to seize power:

“They may have false flags and they may do a lot of things, but no matter how an emergency comes up, they’re going to make use of it. And the use of it isn’t to say ‘Hey, how are we going to protect the American people?’

Are they worrying, when they talk about doing something about rigged elections, [that] the votes are counted? No, they’re making sure that the votes aren’t counted and they’re irrelevant and the government has all this power.”

Ron Paul speaks about rigged elections from personal experience. In 2012, when he ran for president within the Republican Party, he was silenced by the media and the political establishment.

Primaries and caucuses in Maine and other states showed irregularities, and at more than one caucus event, the lights were simply turned off when Paul supporters stood up to Republican leadership. At another caucus, police assaulted and arrested them.

“The elections don’t matter. This is a ritual that we go through,” Paul observed last week. Instead, he referenced a seemingly omnipotent power much more influential than the ‘will of the people.’

My belief is that the control is the Deep State, and people have to realize that,” he said.

Michael Lofgren, a former Republican congressional aide, has written extensively on the Deep State and describes it as “a hybrid entity of public and private institutions ruling the country according to consistent patterns in season and out, connected to, but only intermittently controlled by, the visible state whose leaders we choose.”

Lofgren continues:

“The Deep State does not consist of the entire government. It is a hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department.”

Lofgren notes the financial system is also under the influence of the Deep State and that certain areas of the judicial system, namely, the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, are manipulated by the opaque, shadowy apparatus.

As Ron Paul observed:

“Those powers are already there and I think those individuals who are behind the scenes who really find out what the policies are going to be, regardless of who’s in office, know exactly what we argue: that this place, our country, and our financial system and foreign policy is very precarious and something terrible is going to happen.”

One of those things, he argued, is the continued usurpation of civil liberties:

“This is where the real enemy is right now. Sure, we have to have a national defence. But I don’t agitate and read and study and try to change people’s minds because I think somebody is going to invade us. I want to change foreign policy so we are less in danger.

“But really, the greatest danger since 9/11 has been the taking away of our liberties. Our civil liberties have been undermined. This will only add fuel to the problems we have already.”

He concluded:

“We do accept the notion that our elections are rigged, but we certainly don’t come down on the side of believing that the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA will unrig our elections.”

“It is a distressing thing to think that — [this is probably a] true statement — no matter what you do [with] your vote, whether you vote or not, the Deep State is in charge and that is what we have to deal with.”

Nevertheless, Paul remained positive:

“But it is good to be politically active, to preach this message, to show people exactly what the government’s doing to us and why we should be involved.”

“But of course, the whole purpose, in the end, has to be that we change our economic philosophy, we change our attitude about protection of our civil liberties, and we change our attitude about getting involved in the internal affairs of other nations, occupying other countries, and being involved in nation-building.

“If we do those three little things then, believe me, the world would be much more peaceful and we would all be much more prosperous.”

Federal Appeals Court Halts Dakota Access Segment as Solidarity Protests Spread Nationwide*

A federal appeals court ruled to temporarily halt construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline taking place within a 20-mile radius of Lake Oahe (near the Missouri river) on Saturday, September 17. Federal judge James Boasberg had previously ruled to allow construction in the Lake Oahe area, but minutes after his ruling, the federal government stepped in and asked Energy Transfer Partners to voluntarily cease construction in this area.

Construction within 20 miles of Lake Oahe seemed to have already stopped after the federal government’s request, but now it is legally halted, albeit temporarily, by a court order. A panel of three judges on the D.C. Circuit of Appeals ordered that all construction within 20 miles of Lake Oahe cease for the time being “to give the court sufficient opportunity to consider the emergency motion for injunction pending appeal.”

Read the one-page DC Appeals Court ruling below:

Download PDF here.

The news website warned that the DC appeals court is already split on the matter, due to a Bush appointee:

“Of the three judges who have been assigned to hear the appeal, one of them was against granting the administrative injunction, according to the clerk’s order. That judge is Janice Rogers Brown, who was nominated to the D.C. Circuit by former president George W. Bush. Within three years of joining the court, she generated a strong anti-tribal record, according to a 2008 review of her writings by Indianz.Com.

The other two judges on the case are Thomas B. Griffith, another Bush nominee, and Cornelia T.L. Pillard, who was nominated by President Barack Obama and is relatively new to the D.C. Circuit. She was part of the panel that gave the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington a significant victory in its land-into-trust case.”

While construction in the area of Lake Oahe has already been stopped before Friday’s appeals court ruling, construction outside of this area has been continuing in full force.

Energy Transfer Partners is aggressively seeking to complete construction of as much of the Dakota Access Pipeline as soon as possible and are committed to its completion, according to a statement from CEO Kelcy Warren.

We documented ongoing Dakota Access construction in a video report earlier this week:

Today people returned to the site of where water protectors were attacked by dogs controlled by security contractors – an incident for which no dog handler has yet been charged.

The same day, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a Special Use Permit to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe “to use Federal lands managed by the Corps near Lake Oahe.”

According to the Army they granted a special use permit to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe for them to use Army Corps land but only south of the Cannonball River.  The Corps made it clear that all land north of the Cannonball, including the area containing the overflow camps, does not fall under this permit, the Army said, due to the land already being covered by a cattle grazing lease.

Friday also saw a march and rally against the pipeline held by water protectors and allies in the city of Bismarck.

Following a wave of solidarity actions earlier this week, demonstrations against the Dakota Access Pipeline continued across the country on Friday and Saturday in the NoDAPL solidarity week of action.

Protesters took the fight directly to the banks pushing the pipeline. In Chicago, a zine has been released and protesters occupied a CitiBank. In Washington DC a TD Bank was shut down. (Also, in recent weeks livestreamer UnToldCarlisle has been covering protests and press statements around DC court hearings closely).

While many progressive groups have joined the opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline, the AFL-CIO and its president Richard Trumka announced this week it is backing big oil and banks to protect temporary construction jobs. On the other hand, the 700,000 member Communications Workers of America (CWA) union announced support for the Standing Rock tribe.

Australian Jets Participated in Massacre of Syrian Soldiers in Deir Ezzor*

Australian Jets Participated in Massacre of Syrian Soldiers in Deir Ezzor*

By Paul Antonopoulos

Australia’s Defence Department have admitted that its jets have participated in an airstrike against Syrian Army positions near Deir Ezzor that left tens dead.

Australia has offered its condolences to the victims of the soldiers families and has announced it will fully cooperate in the review of the incident.

“Australian aircraft were among a number of international aircraft taking part in this Coalition operation,” the Defence Department said in a statement.

“Australia would never intentionally target a known Syrian military unit or actively support Daesh (ISIS). Defence offers its condolences to the families of any Syrian personnel killed or wounded in this incident.”

So blatant was the airstrike against the Syrian Army that even anti-Assad mainstream media in Australia have suggested that the airstrikes purposefully attacked their positions, supporting Russia’s claim.

Australia is one of many countries participating in the illegal US-led Coalition airstrikes in Syria that are without coordination with Damascus.

Hands Off Syria (Australia) condemns Australian military involvement in Deir ez Zorr massacre

Hands off Syria (Australia) Press Release:

Hands Off Syria strongly condemns the massacre of 62 Syrian soldiers by Australian Defence Forces. Australia’s military has admitted involvement in the U.S.-led bombing raids in Deir ez Zorr, Syria, which killed at least 62 Syrian soldiers and wounded 100 others. The soldiers were engaged in defending their country from the ISIS terrorist group.

Whether the massacre was ‘accidental’ or deliberate should be determined by an independent war crimes tribunal. Assertion by the perpetrators ‘sorry, we didn’t mean it’, is completely inadequate. Further, there are many circumstances which suggest the attack was deliberate.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop must explain two things:

on what legal basis have any Australian armed forces engaged in bombings on Syrian territory, without an invitation from or coordination with the Syrian Government?
– will the Australian Government hand over to the Syrian authorities or the International Court of Justice those Australians who were accomplices in this atrocity?
– to what extent does the USA share intelligence with Australian Defence Forces, when it asks Australian personnel to become involved in assassinations and bombings?

The Deir ez Zorr massacre of 17 September 2016 is material for an independent war crimes trial, and these are some of the initial questions Australian officials would have to answer.

The anonymous Defence statement (see below) is insulting in its trivialisation of the first major war crime co-authored by Australian forces in Syria.

The Australian Defence Department is reported as saying:

“Australian aircraft were among a number of international aircraft taking part in this Coalition operation … Australia would never intentionally target a known Syrian military unit or actively support Daesh (IS). Defence offers its condolences to the families of any Syrian personnel killed or wounded in this incident … While Syria remains a dynamic and complex operating environment, Australia would never intentionally target a known Syrian military unit or actively support Daesh (also known as ISIL).”

Syrian Army strikes ISIS back in Deir Ezzor

Less than 24 hours after more than 80 government troops were killed in US airstrikes on Army positions in the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, Syrian fighter jets continue to pound ISIS gatherings in Jabal al-Thurdeh, to the south of the embattled city.

Earlier this day, ISIS claimed responsibility for downing a Syrian aircraft, killing its pilot.

Yesterday, ISIS jihadists managed to advance in Jabal al-Thurdeh after US airstrikes hit the Syrian forces defending the area. However, the government troops, backed by Syrian and Russian air force, regained most of the lost territories.
