Neighbourhood Comes Together to Remove Racist Graffiti from Black Family’s Home*

Neighbourhood Comes Together to Remove Racist Graffiti from Black Family’s Home*

A neighbourhood in Washington came together to remove racist graffiti from an African-American family’s home. It’s reported that at least 2-dozen volunteers showed up, including the neighbourhood police officer and town mayor.

The home had been vandalized while the Phillips family was gone, spending the last few weeks of the summer on a camping trip. The vandals spray-painted “KKK” on the family’s truck, and additional racial slurs on the family’s home and garage.

The effort to clean the graffiti up was organized by a local resident named Heidi Russell through the Thurston County Youth Football League Tenino Beavers football and cheerleading squads. Mr Phillips expressed his thanks for the community’s gesture, which spared his children from having to see the hate-speech, and has stated that he does not believe the Ku Klux Klan was actually responsible, though they received undeserved notoriety for it.

All reports indicate the suspects were never caught, however we’ll provide an update should new reports surface.

In a statement Phillips said:

No way do I think the people involved in the KKK came over to my home and did what they did. I am 58 years old. I know better. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it.”

In regards to his feelings about the town of Tenino, Phillips continues, “I like Tenino. That’s why I moved here.”

While neighbours were able to remove the graffiti on the house, they were unable to do anything about the Phillips family’s truck, however the local Chevrolet dealership, Sunset Chevrolet, pledged to repair, restore, or even replace the family’s truck if need be. Mayor Wayne Fournier expressed his pride in Tenino for coming together when a member of their community needed them, and indeed they’ve set an example for the entire nation.

“You” are not Your Rational Mind*

“You” are not Your Rational Mind*

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Compassionate,

Previously, I had explained why the best translation for the Arabic term ‘aql’ is consciousness. I also detailed the change in the meaning of the Latin term intellectus to its modern English connotation of being solely related to the rational mind. I am assuming you understand this and will be using the words consciousness, aql, and intellect (in it’s Latin sense) interchangeably throughout all my future posts..

Moving on, the topic I’d like to discuss is the different means through which our consciousness gains knowledge and in doing so, explain exactly what knowledge is. I had slightly touched upon this in my earlier piece, but I would like to delve further. Due to the length of this topic, I have broken it into a series. This can be considered the second, with the post on the aql being considered the first.

The Modalities of Knowing

There are different ways in which your consciousness ascertains knowledge of reality. Generally this happens through a certain “organ” which God has created for a certain kind of knowledge that we are privy to.  Not all of these methods are equal. For the less important methods, I will just offer just a brief sketch.

The Senses

This is pretty obvious, but you gain knowledge of things that you can see, hear, touch, taste, etc. This mode of knowing is sometimes given to error, and must be corrected by the rational mind.

The Body

Ever have a gut feeling? The body allows us to gain knowledge not just of other people, but also of ourselves. The body allows us to feel lust, physical pain, and various other emotions. These emotions are themselves a kind of direct knowledge of the self that intrudes into our consciousness (i.e. that I am in pain, or that I desire so and so), but also gives us knowledge about the world by inference (i.e. that this object is dangerous, or that that person is attractive.)

You may notice that there are Buddhist, Hindu, and Taoist meditative techniques which allow one to get in touch with their body. These consist of things like breathing techniques, techniques allow one to relax certain body parts, to move energy (chi) around the body, and more. To my knowledge, not much emphasis has been placed on this in Islam, probably because it is extrinsic to true happiness and spirituality. Once one is able to focus the Divine Reality within the heart, things like “breathing meditation” become superfluous because inner peace has been found.

Our General Experience of the Rational Mind

Most people tend to think of their rational mind as themselves, rather than as an organ that their consciousness uses. This is because the rational mind by its nature produces a torrent of thoughts that directly affect our consciousness on a nonstop basis and to which we are constantly focused on. It is not unlike the shadows in the Plato’s cave – our consciousness is so focused on our own thoughts that we often forget that our conscious experience consists of more than just thoughts. The solution is to learn how to separate our deeper selves from the torrent of thoughts intruding into our consciousness.

The previous organ explored, namely the body, should at least help this make sense, albeit only partially. Even if you are not in touch with your heart yet (which is when you’ll really be able to dissociate from the mind), you’ve no doubt experienced moments where your consciousness was so totally focused on your body, that your mind – for a moment at least – fell silent. This kind of “meta” experience should help you realize that your consciousness is deeper than the constant and random thoughts which occur in your mind.

Another reason we attach ourselves to the rational mind is not only because are focused on it, but also because it has been chattering for as long as we can remember. An example I can give to help illustrate this is; suppose throughout your entire life you felt a numb pain. Chances are, you wouldn’t even realize that you’re not supposed to be feeling that – you would just assume that this is a normal part of conscious experience. Likewise, if all your life the sun never went down, you would not know darkness. Because the rational mind is always speaking, we think that it is us, when it is only an organ like our eyes, ears, or heart. You see through your eyes, but “you” are not your eyes. Likewise, you think through your rational mind, but you are not your rational mind. Your rational mind is on the surface of your being, “you” are actually deeper than that.

I will detail in future posts exactly how this (mis)identification with the rational mind damages your happiness level, inshaAllah. For now, however, suffice it to say that the rational mind is able to connect to a concept of God, but unable to connect to the reality of God; He who is closer to us than our jugular veins and Who’s Mercy encompasses all things. The reality of God can only be seen with the heart. God being the source of all good, joy, being, beauty, truth, and happiness directly emanates these things into the whole of our beings, through our hearts, once our hearts remember Him. This is known as dhikr, and it is the most important aspect of all of Islamic spirituality.

Here is a diagram to illustrate the basic idea I have detailed here. The heart is faded out because it will be discussed in a future post.

The relationship between your consciousness and the different “organs” through which we come to know. The two lines indicate a direct and immediate connection between your consciousness and these organs, such that when your consciousness is directed to that organ, the organ gets “pulled in” to your consciousness. This “pulling in” has been illustrated in the case of the heart, although it applies to the other organs as well. This will be explained further later on.

Here are some verses and hadith to back up the claims I’ve made here:

Know Thyself

من عرف نفسه فقد عرف ربه

The Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said: “Whoever knows himself [alt. his self] knows his Lord.”

Everyone knows their rational mind, therefore the deeper self must not be the mind only otherwise this hadith would be banal; yet it is regarded as one of the most important hadiths in the entire Islamic canon.

Furthermore, there have been many great atheist philosophers who knew the human mind better than 99.99% of believers (just see David Hume’s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding). Yet these atheistic philosophers had no understanding of their Lord precisely because they lacked knowledge of the self, the heart, and consciousness as a whole as understood apart from the rational mind. If the self was the rational mind only, then these atheistic philosophers would have recognized their Lord. Because they knew the rational mind, but not their Lord, we can conclude that the rational mind is not the meaning of “self” being referred to in this hadith.

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, Even if he casts forth his excuses. (75:14-15)

This shows that the rational mind can put forward excuses, and yet there is something deeper in the human being which recognizes “the lies that we tell ourselves.” If the rational mind is producing a lie, who/what is it producing a lie to? What is it that is recognizing it as a lie/excuse? If you can experientially realize what it is that is understanding that we are telling ourselves a lie, you are 90% of the way there. In fact, this general principle applies beyond just lies that we tell ourselves. It applies to everything that the human mind produces. Every single random thought that occurs is not you thinking, but rather a thought being presenting to you. “You” experience the thought.

The Emphasis of the Quran on the Heart

If we were just our rational minds, then as soon as someone assents to the propositions that there is only One God and that Muhammad is His Messenger, one should have attained full faith. At most, what could be required is studying a few more theology books to gain a deeper mental understanding of what tawhid means and the wide-ranging debates between the various theological schools. After all, on this view we are just what we think, right? So once someone has the “right” set of mental propositions about what tawhid means, one should have attained full faith. Unsurprisingly, this is implicitly the view of the Wahhabis who argue excessively about aqeeda for precisely this reason. I will elaborate on this further in future posts

Yet, the Quran explicitly negates this point of view, which means that there must be more to ourselves than just what we think. In fact the propositions we assent to are only meaningful insofar as they inform our hearts. I have already given an abundance of proof for this in my previous post on the aql, without even scratching the surface. Here’s a reiteration of the most relevant verse:

The bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (49:14)

Here is another ayah which affirms that the propositions which the mind assents to (including the shahadah which one may say only with their lips) are meaningless on the Day of Judgment. All that matters are the propositions which the heart has assented to.

إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ

Except he who comes to Allah with [alt. by] a sound heart.

There are also countless verses on nifaaq to this effect, but for the sake of brevity I have not included them.

Conclusion

You are not your rational mind. You are deeper than that, and can be more closely identified with your heart. The rational mind plays an important role which will be explored in future posts.

In the next post, we will cover the heart in itself, as well as the relationship between the other organs and the heart. After that, we will explore the effects of believing that you are the rational mind, and consequently neglecting the heart, upon your happiness level and the way in which the rational mind compensates for this. Thereafter, we will survey the history of Western thought so as to help us identify what exactly went so wrong in Western civilization, the social ramifications of this and the consequence it has had on us. Somewhere along the way, I hope to share a few techniques on how to awaken the heart and the consequences it will have on your life, inshaAllah. I pray that the Generous Lord give me the tawfeeq to participate in this noble work, and to Him belongs all Glory.

White Privilege Gets No Prison Time for Raping 2-Year-Old Girl and Posting It Online*

White Privilege Gets No Prison Time for Raping 2-Year-Old Girl and Posting It Online*

By Brianna Acuesta

Kraigen Grooms streamed the assault online when he was just 16 years old.

In another scary moment in which white privilege trumps the safety of potential victims, a white male was recently given a very lenient sentence for a very serious crime.

Kraigen Grooms, now 19 years old, plead guilty to second degree sexual assault in April 2013 when he was just 16 years old because he had raped a 2-year-old girl and streamed the whole thing online, with at least one other person watching. Prosecutors determined that the act was premeditated and claimed that before he was caught for this disgusting crime, he was planning a similar assault on a 3-year-old boy.

When Grooms was initially convicted, he faced a 25-year prison sentence, but in July of this year he plead guilty to “a lesser charge of engaging in a lascivious act with a child.” Because of this reduced offense, a judge sentenced him to five years of supervised release and a potential 10-year suspended sentence if he breaks parole.

While County Attorney Gary Oldenburger said that he was likely coerced by people online to commit the sexual acts, forensic analysis of computers used in the transfer of video recordings revealed that Grooms found the incident “so hot” and was plotting a second attack. Photos of an unidentified male child around 3 years old were discovered with arrangements for online streaming and recording the assault.

The family of the 2-year-old victim had said that they didn’t wish for Grooms to be sentenced to significant prison time and Oldenburger said that this was the main motivation for giving him a light sentence with no prison time. However, an argument can be made that the safety of potential, future victims needs to be considered before simply letting Grooms out on probation.

He has undergone several mental health evaluations since he was first arrested, but if treatment doesn’t work, it’s likely that another toddler, or even several, could become victims of his horrible sexual plots. If he was convinced once to molest a toddler, perhaps he could be coerced again or even act on his own.

This light sentence in favour of a white defendant is only one in a long line of recent light sentences. Infamous Brock Turner was recently released from jail after serving only three months for digitally penetrating an unconscious woman near a dumpster. Last month, Austin Wilkerson was sentenced to only probation and a 2-year jail sentence after he sexually assaulted a drunk female victim that was in his care. Despite the victim asking the judge to “have as much mercy for the rapist as he did for me that night,” he gave Wilkerson no prison time. By comparison, black assailants are consistently sentence to 5-15 years in prison.

The judge, Randy Degeest from Iowa, is facing online criticism and online petitions have even been circulated to have him fired.

U.S. Promises $3mn to Family of Innocent Killed by CIA Drones*

By Andrew Emett

Since the inception of the drone program, the CIA has killed at least eight U.S. citizens, including a hostage and an innocent 16-year-old boy, without due process

After mistakenly killing two hostages in a CIA drone strike last year, the Obama administration issued a rare public apology to the victim’s families and has reached a settlement with one of the families. According to U.S. officials, the family of the Italian hostage agreed to settle for nearly $3 million, while the family of the American hostage has yet to reach a settlement for the taking of their son’s life by his own government.

After weeks of reviewing intercepted cellphone conversations, drone feeds, satellite data, and informants’ reports, the CIA launched drones from a base in Afghanistan on January 15, 2015. The drones crossed the border into Pakistan and flew over the Shawal Valley to conduct a strike against four suspected al-Qaeda operatives. After the attack, surveillance video recorded six bodies being pulled from the debris instead of four.

Two of the bodies belonged to kidnapped aid workers, Dr. Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto. Abducted in 2011, Dr. Weinstein had lived in Maryland before moving to Pakistan to become director for a consulting firm working with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Lo Porto, an Italian national, was taken hostage in 2012 while attempting to perform humanitarian work in Pakistan.

Included amongst the rubble was the body of another American. Alleged al-Qaeda deputy leader, Ahmed Farouq also died in the strike. According to U.S. officials, Farouq was born in the United States and moved to Pakistan as a child.

Four months after the drone strike, President Obama publicly acknowledged their deaths and apologized to the families of Lo Porto and Weinstein. Senior legislators later disclosed that the CIA had detected a Western hostage held by al-Qaeda for months before the strike but chose not to conduct further surveillance on the hostage.

On Friday, the Italian newspaper La Republica reported that the U.S. government had signed an agreement earlier this summer to give Lo Porto’s family 1.18 million euros to compensate them for their loss. But U.S. officials recently stated the sum was closer to 2.6 million euros, or roughly $3 million.

“When we announced Mr. Lo Porto’s death in a U.S. Government counterterrorism operation last year, we affirmed that the United States would provide a condolence payment to his family,” Ned Price, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told The Washington Post.

“We did so knowing that no dollar figure could ever bring back their loved ones.”

In a statement expressing sorrow for her son’s death, Lo Porto’s mother wrote,

“I will not see my son at home with his smile. They took my precious son and they also killed me. Now all that remains for me is to wait until the last day of my life for divine, not earthly, justice.”

Although Lo Porto’s family agreed to a settlement with the U.S. government, the Weinstein family has yet to reach an adequate amount that would compensate them for their son’s needless death. Since the inception of the drone program, the CIA has killed at least eight U.S. citizens, including a hostage and an innocent 16-year-old boy, without due process.

Mental Illness and the Gut-Brain Connection*

Mental Illness and the Gut-Brain Connection*

By Emily Deans M.D.

We are never truly alone. On our skin, in our gums, and in our guts live 100 trillion organisms, altogether known as the microbiome. These beasties comprise 90% of the cells of our bodies, though these cells are so tiny in size that it appears our own human cells predominate. It is only recently that we have begun to study these organisms with any depth. Most of them live within the gut, and cannot be cultured, and only with the advent of advanced genetic testing have we been able to have a better understanding of the variety and numbers of microbes we’re dealing with. They are Bacteria, Archaea, and even some eukariotic parasites, protozoans, and fungi.

What do they have to do with psychiatry?

It turns out way more than we might have suspected. The gut and brain have a steady ability to communicate via the nervous system, hormones, and the immune system. Some of the microbiome can release neurotransmitters, just like our own neurons do, speaking to the brain in its own language via the vagus nerve.

To have a full understanding of how the whole gut-brain connection works, you need robust knowledge of endocrinology, immunology, pathology, and neurology, which is a bit beyond the scope of a blog article. However, to break it down to simplistic terms, here are the basic links:

  • The body responds to stress (mental or physical) via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. For example, if you are eating lunch and a lion jumps into the middle of your picnic table, your “fight or flight” system is fired into full gear, your heart pounds, your pupils dilate, your hair stands on end, natural steroids and adrenaline flood your system to strengthen your muscles and give you an extra burst of speed. Even your platelets change shape so they are more sticky, leaving you less likely to bleed out if you are attacked. Naturally, our bodies have negative feedback that can tone down the fight or flight response once the danger is past (assuming you survive). Under conditions of chronic stress, however, mental or physical, the feedback tends to get messed up, leading to symptoms of chronic stress (which includes mental issues such as anxiety or clinical depression, but also physical problems such as chronic gut problems, headaches, high blood pressure, etc.). What does all of that have to do with the gut?
  • While the hormonal system that regulates fight-or-flight, rest-and-recovery, and everything in between is easy to conceptualize, the second underlying system, the immune system, is far more complex and works at a cellular level. Our bodies aren’t particularly sophisticated when it comes to facing off against stress. Our stress response doesn’t readily distinguish between mental and physical distress; your heart pounds and you tremble with anxiety when you are in an uncomfortable meeting with your boss, when such a reaction is not helpful in that situation, though it might have helped with the lion. And not only do we respond to the tough day on the job with a hormonal response, but also an immunological one. When our body is under stress, it releases what are called inflammatory cytokines, little chemical messengers that bring a certain part of our immune system into high alert. In a sense, our body reacts to all stress as if it were an infection, and to chronic stress as if it were a chronic infection.* Now the immune system works wonders and inflammation saves your life nearly every day from all the pathogens out there like the flu and strep, but chronic levels of inflammatory response also lead to all sorts of chronic disease, for example depressive disorders, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis. Immune system activation can also determine whether or not we develop cancer. Where does the gut get involved? Well, it turns out the gut microbiome plays a key role in regulating our immune response. Thus the make-up of our gut microbiome could make the difference as to whether we are sick or well, both mentally and physically.
  • Animal and human studies support the theory that pathogenic bacteria in the gut, such as Difficile, or in certain circumstances, H. Pylori, lead to human disease, and not just the obvious direct illnesses, pseudomembranous colitis and ulcers. These bacteria also interact with the immune system in the gut to cause the release of inflammatory cytokines, stress steroids, and a systemic stress response (similar in most ways to the lion attack). Some of the responses of the gut even have an effect on our pain response…yes, people with certain unfavourable gut bacteria might be more sensitive to pain than others. However, other commensal organisms in the gut seem to have the opposite effect, the most studied being certain strains of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. The right sort of commensal bacteria keep the numbers of pathogenic bacteria low, and also interact with the immune system in a way to turn off that chronic stress response. The  “right” gut bacteria also interact on a hormonal level, helping to turn off the cortisol and adrenaline response that can cause long-term harm to the body. However, each large group of gut bacteria (and Archaea, which have a big influence on digestion and help us ferment and breakdown otherwise indigestible plant fibres) have many different strains, and each of these strains may have differential effects, some of them synergistic or antagonistic. The scope of complexity of the problem is mind-bending. In general, it is felt that more variety in the gut microbiome is probably better, and studies of hunter-gatherers show us they seem to have both more mass and more variety of gut bacteria than do modern Westernized humans.

What is the direct evidence these gut microbes affect the brain?

Most of the evidence is in mice or rats, but scientists have shown that rats raised germ-free have different production of key brain neuron fertilizers that help with neuro-regeneration, neuro-plasticity, and repair than do rats that are (like most animals) colonized with gut bacteria.  This same brain fertilizer, BDNF, is necessary in the human brain as well. BDNF being low in the wrong place at the wrong time is implicated in clinical depression, chronic anxiety syndromes, and other psychiatric disease. Other differences in germ free mice include changes in the shape and expression of certain neurotransmitter receptors, NMDA and 5HT1A. These receptors are also important in the regulation of mood, anxiety, and a malfunctioning NMDA receptor is part of the pathology of psychosis, as seen in schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Certain strains of probiotics can increase the availability of tryptophan, the key precursor to making serotonin.

There is also evidence stress can affect the microbiome. Mice exposed to early parental loss have an immediate reduction in the amount of lactobacilli in the faeces. Some of these microbiota changes are long term, including decreasing some “friendly” bacteria and increasing the relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium.

To add complexity to the whole question, most of these studies are about certain bacterial species among many thousands of bacteria species, and beyond the commensal bacteria, the human immune system is also profoundly affected by so-called pseudocommensal organisms (such as M vaccae) found in soil and water that don’t stay in our guts, but regularly passed through them in human history as we ate wild foods and drank spring and pond water. In modern times, those who have been vaccinated with Bacille-Calmette-Guerin (BCG) as protection against tuberculosis have, in a sense, been chronically infected with a pseudocommensal somewhat similar to M vaccae. Along with some protection against tuberculosis, those who have received the vaccine are also less likely to develop melanoma (and some other cancers) than those who haven’t, suggesting the effect of the vaccine on the immune system helps T cells of our immune system in cancer surveillance and elimination of neoplastic cells. In addition, those infected with chronic parasites such as hookworms seem to have a much lower incidence of autoimmune disease than do modern, Western, mostly parasite-free humans. Since our immune system co-evolved with these parasites, it would make sense that their absence would have a profound effect on immune regulation, leading to all sorts of consequences, both physical and psychiatric.

Losing energy - as fatigue sets in one may respond by abusing drugs. Insomnia is another symptom at this stage.

Losing energy – as fatigue sets in one may respond by abusing drugs. Insomnia is another symptom at this stage.

How can we affect the gut microbiome and the immune system? Changing the diet will have immediate effects, with folks who eat highly refined diets having a different gut composition than those who eat more whole foods, fruits and vegetables. We can also take probiotics, though the research is preliminary, and probiotics only help temporarily (that is, as long as you take them). Some probiotic formulations now include soil bacteria, giving the benefits (and risks?) of both commensal and pseudocommensal exposure. Strains of bacteria that affect the brain or behaviour are called psychobiotics. Faecal transplants will cause a permanent change in the microbiota. BCG and vaccinia injections could be something to look at as well. Also, some studies are being done on infection with hookworm and pig whipworm eggs in autoimmune conditions to replicate exposure to the complex eukariotic parasites.

All in all, the gut is a terrific place to start helping humans be as healthy, resilient, and robust as we have evolved to be.

*Some very bright people believe that chronic diseases are all caused by chronic infections, and in some cases this may be true, for example, toxoplasma infection is associated with a higher risk of developing schizophrenia, but I think the body’s stress response, once it is out of balance, can explain many chronic illnesses without invoking a chronic infection in every case.

The fact that an average cancer treatment costs somewhere between $300,000 and even up to $1,000,000 makes his statement more reasonable.

Based on his research in the last 25 years Dr. Jones has come to the conclusion that chemotherapy does more harm to the patients than actually treating the cancer. He says that people who refuse chemotherapy treatment live on average around 12 years longer than people who accept the chemotherapy treatment, most patients undergoing chemotherapy die in time frame of 3 years since they are diagnosed with cancer and some much faster than that (within few weeks since being diagnosed.) He also claims that patients with breast cancer who reject treatment live four times longer than those who undergo chemotherapy.

America spends $8,713 per capita on healthcare, more than any other high-income nation in the world and their life expectancy is only 78,8 years. This Is mainly due to the fact that the media and the healthcare system in general focus way more on treating diseases and conditions that actually teaching people about the importance of preventative medicine. That is why we need to educate ourselves about treatments and cures for different diseases and conditions.
Having a healthy diet, exercising, not stressing out and enjoying life are great for improving our health and living a longer and happier life.

Leaked Source Reveals Coordination between U.S., ISIS in Attacking Syrian Army*

The ISIS launched attacks on the Syrian army positions in Deir ez-Zor only 7 minutes after the U.S.-led coalition’s airstrikes on Saturday, a military source said, adding that the air and ground assault were highly coordinated, According to FNA report.

The source said after the coalition’s pounding of the Syrian army near Deir ez-Zor airbase, the ISIS could take full control of al-Tharda mountain and then Deir ez-Zor military base, adding that the army and national defense forces deployed near the airbase immediately won it back from the terrorists by launching a counterattack.

Noting that Deir ez-Zor is now almost in tranquility and no change has occurred in the military map of the region, the source said by attacking the Syrian army positions, the U.S. seeks to prevent military operations to break the terrorists’ siege on the city.

The source said the simultaneous raid of the ISIL terrorists immediately after the coalition airstrikes is the best evidence of the high coordination done between the U.S. and the terrorists.

Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that four strikes against Syrian positions had been delivered by U.S.-led coalition aircraft, including two F-16 jet fighters and two A-10 support aircraft.

The Syrian military called the bombing a “serious and blatant aggression” against Syrian forces, and said it was “conclusive evidence” that the U.S. and its allies support ISIL militants.

Also on Sunday, the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman blasted Washington over the recent airstrikes near Deir ez-Zor, and said such moves serves the interests of the ISIS terror group.

“If previously we had suspicions that Fatah al-Sham Front (formerly known as al-Nusra Front) is protected this way, now, after Saturday airstrikes on the Syrian army we come to a really terrifying conclusion for the entire world: The White House is defending the ISIL,” Maria Zakharova said.

“We demand a full and detailed explanation from Washington. That explanation must be given at the U.N. Security Council,” she added.

Russia has demanded full and detailed explanation from Washington over the incident in Deir ez-Zor, in which 62 Syrian troops were killed and over 100 injured.

U.S. Airstrikes Kill up to 8 Policemen in Afghanistan*

Up to eight policemen have been killed in Afghanistan as a result of U.S. airstrikes, officials told media. The U.S. has confirmed one airstrike, but insists the assault was in response to a threat.

An initial airstrike killed one policeman late Sunday, while a follow-up strike targeting first responders killed at least seven others, said Rahimullah Khan, commander of the reserve police unit in Uruzgan, according to Reuters.

Afghanistan’s ToloNews also reported that the eight Afghan National Police (ANP) officers were killed at their checkpoint in central Uruzgan province.

“The enemies were far, about 800 meters from our check posts and their flags were up and they were coming and bombing the police. It seems that it was ordered or they made a mistake. Anyone who was involved in this should be punished,” an anonymous official told the news outlet.

One of the soldiers who survived the attack, identified as Torjan, said:

“I was at my check post. The first attack killed our colleagues and while we were trying to pull-out our colleagues from the check post then another attack happened.”

The U.S. military command in Kabul has confirmed its warplanes conducted an airstrike in the area, but said those targeted were “individuals firing on, and posing a threat to” Afghan national security forces.

We don’t have any further information on who those individuals might have been or why they were attacking ANDSF [Afghan national defense and security forces],” U.S. military spokesman Brigadier General Charles Cleveland said in a statement.

U.S, coalition, and Afghan forces have the right to self defense and in this case were responding to an immediate threat,” Cleveland added as quoted by Reuters.

Afghan officials said they are investigating the attack and communicating with the US-led coalition.

Afghan security forces, with the support of US airstrikes and international advisers, continue to battle Taliban militants in the country. The group has been fighting a 15-year insurgency against the Western-backed government.

This comes after an airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria killed 62 government soldiers and injured 100 others amid a fragile ceasefire on Saturday. The U.S. military admitted it may have unintentionally struck Syrian troops while carrying out a raid against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants.
