Oops! Chinese and Russian Radar Can Still See the $4.4bn ‘invisible’ USS Zumwalt*

Oops! Chinese and Russian Radar Can Still See the $4.4bn ‘invisible’ USS Zumwalt*

The DDG 1000, also known as the USS Zumwalt, is the Pentagon’s $3 billion guided-missile destroyer – Translated from Russian by Kristina Kharlova

The ‘invisible’ American Zumwalt broke down after water got into the lubrication system. In addition, this giant, created as invisible, couldn’t evade Russian and Chinese radar.

The newest U.S. Navy destroyer Zumwalt was not only one of the most expensive in history, but also the most inefficient. New faults were found in its design, reports USNI News. The lubrication system is not working, responsible for the maintenance of the propeller shaft of the ship. It has taken in water, when the destroyer went to sea at the naval base in Norfolk during the current stage of testing. Repairs are expected to take no less than two weeks.

Zumwalt was launched in 2013. Its construction cost the U.S. tax payers $4.4 billion dollars. The ‘highlight’ of the project is that almost all the ship’s systems are driven by electricity, and internal combustion engines are only needed to produce the current. That is, any leak becomes mortally dangerous, both for the ship and crew.

Because of the unusual shape and the use of radio-silencing material the USS Zumwalt is able to be invisible to radar. However, this invisibility has played a cruel joke with the Americans. As soon as the ship first went to sea, complaints from alarmed merchant ships poured in. Their radar saw “just a fishing boat,” and when the destroyer was in sight, they were forced to urgently scramble to change course.

And one more detail: the destroyer was invisible for everyone, except for the Russian and Chinese radars. They operate on a different frequency and can see Zumwalt very clearly, even despite the fact that it cost $4.4 billion.

The Navy has not yet received the ship officially. The transfer is expected in 2016, apparently, only the problems are fixed.

Hawaiians Openly Reject President Obama’s new rule—a DOI invented process to create a Native Hawaiian Tribe

As President Obama announces his plans to federalize Hawaiians as a tribe, Hawaiian community leaders and groups who have for many years protested attempts to turn Hawaiians into Native Americans (the Akaka Bill), will hold a press conference Friday, September 23rd at 12 noon in front of‘Iolani Palace. They will restate their opposition to the Obama Administration’s Department of Interior (DOI) rule change.

“This change is intended to circumvent legal, congressional processes, and Hawaiian community input,” said Healani-Sonoda Pale, founding member of the group, Protest Na‘i Aupuni and one of the organizers of the press conference.

“President Obama tasked his DOI to come up with a process that will allow him to use his Executive Order privilege and designate federally chosen groups of Hawaiians as recognized. Without any congressional oversight or congressional vetting, President Obama and his successor will confer immense power on a pseudo native government,” Sonoda-Pale said.

“And this will allow the DOI to move forward with a process of creating land and resource settlements that typically follow legitimate, congressionally conferred federal recognition.”

Two years in the making, the Obama/DOI rule change was created in response to Office of Hawaiian Affairs CEO Kamana’opono Crabbe’s May 5, 2014 letter to Secretary of State John Kerry. In it, he essentially questioned the legitimacy of U.S. jurisdiction in Hawaii by requesting proof of how the Hawaiian Kingdom was legally annexed to the United States.
However, rather than answer the question, President Obama instructed the DOI to hold public hearings in Hawaii to discuss federal recognition. During the summer of 2014, hearings were held for 2 weeks on 5 of the Hawaiian Islands. Thousands of Hawaiians lined up, but only hundreds were able to testify. The overwhelming majority (over 95%) rejected the idea of a DOI Rule change and spoke powerfully in opposition to any Federal or State controlled process for sovereignty.

“It feels like the overthrow all over again,” says Kahalu’u Kupuna and Protest Na’i Aupuni member Kapu Lambert.

“The finalization of the DOI Rule forebodes more hardship Hawaiians. Many of our people are homeless and are at the bottom of every socioeconomic statistic in Hawaii. We cannot trust the State and Federal governments and their collaborators to do the right thing on our behalf especially when it comes to Hawaiian sovereignty and lands. I refuse to accept this Rule.”

“After tens of millions of dollars were spent by the state agency Office of Hawaiian Affairs to lobby for federal recognition, after 15 years of resistance to being federalized, we are now going to be saddled with being a fake tribe and federally designated so-called leaders,” said Sonoda-Pale.

Asked why the U.S. would want to federalize Hawaiians when, in fact, hundreds of tribes on the continent have been trying to get federally recognized for many decades, Sonoda-Pale said,

“Why? Because they want our land. They want to create a so-called universal land claims settlement of our Crown and Government lands, aka ‘Ceded Lands.’ And further,” she said, the United States of America, who has never been respectful of indigenous peoples—as we are seeing in North Dakota, is trying to dissolve our rights as a people to self-determination as defined by international law, and our human rights as indigenous people that have also been codified by the United Nations.

First Nations in Canada and U.S. Sign Treaty Opposing Pipelines*

May your prayers be answered Neben…

By Derrick Broze

Indigenous nations from Canada and the United States have signed a treaty agreeing to oppose future proposals for pipeline, rail, and tanker projects that attempt to carry crude oil from Alberta’s oil sands.

On Thursday, tribes from Canada and the northern United States signed a treating declaring their opposition to future proposals for pipelines that would carry crude oil from Alberta to other locations across Canada and the United States. The tribal nations are opposed to the pipelines based on potential threats to the environment.

Reuters reports:

“The Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sands Expansion was signed by 50 aboriginal groups in North America, who also plan to oppose tanker and rail projects in both countries, they said in a statement.

Targets include projects proposed by Kinder Morgan Inc, TransCanada Corp and Enbridge Inc.”

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association told Reuters that the industry is open to hearing indigenous concerns, but that oil is necessary to move Canada forward. “The fact remains there is a critical need for pipelines in Canada,” the association told Reuters.

“What this Treaty means is that from Quebec, we will work with our First Nation allies in BC to make sure that the Kinder Morgan pipeline does not pass and we will also work with our Tribal allies in Minnesota as they take on Enbridge’s Line 3 expansion, and we know they’ll help us do the same against Energy East,” Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Simon said in a statement. Chief Simon was referring to TransCanada’s plan to carry 1.1 million barrels of crude per day from Alberta to Canada’s East Coast.

According to the treaty alliance website, the new treaty was also signed by the Standing Rock Sioux who have been fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) since August. The DAPL, alternatively known as the Bakken Pipeline, is owned by Dallas, Texas-based corporation Energy Transfer Partners, L.P., which created the subsidiary Dakota Access LLC.  The pipeline will stretch 1,172 miles upon completion and transport crude oil from the Bakken fields of North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. The project is set to cross the Missouri River not far from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. The Sacred Stone and Red Warrior Camp’s were formed in opposition to the DAPL.

The alliance is part of an Indigenous Sovereignty resurgence taking place all over Turtle Island where Indigenous Peoples are reasserting themselves as the legitimate governments and caretakers of their territories.

The allied signatory Indigenous Nations aim to prevent a pipeline/train/tanker spill from poisoning their water and to stop the Tar Sands from increasing its output and becoming an even bigger obstacle to solving the climate crisis. The world might not be able to immediately stop using oil tomorrow, but the last thing it needs is more oil, and especially not more of the dirtiest oil on the planet. It is critical that we urgently start building a more sustainable future and signatory Nations want to be at the heart of that building process.”

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the fight against these pipelines is not simply about the pipelines themselves, or even oil. No, this is about a clashing of worldviews. One that sees humanity as an extended family and aims to make decisions based on what is good for today and tomorrow. The other viewpoint, what some might call “The Western Worldview” or a “Modern Worldview,” is living only for this current moment, and not in any sort of enlightened way, but without care or concern for how today’s actions will affect tomorrow.

This is a fight that has been coming for some time now. Those who live with a view towards the 7th Generation and those who seem incapable of fathoming the destruction caused by their actions are finally beginning to face off. Archaic institutions that seek to control and dominate (The State, Corporate Power) can only survive by promoting lifestyles that are not sustainable or regenerative. They thrive off encouraging actions that divide, deplete, and dis-empower. The Indigenous people of this planet are beginning to unite in ways not seen in generations.

It’s time for the people of this Earth to make a decision: Do you stand for the people, for the planet, and for life? Or will you continue to support destruction and the demise of the human species by passively accepting the status quo?

Former Aides to Gov. Cuomo Arrested on Corruption Charges*

Former Aides to Gov. Cuomo Arrested on Corruption Charges*

By Andrew Emett

Besides charging two former Cuomo aides with multiple counts of bribery, extortion, and fraud, federal prosecutors also announced public corruption charges against state official, Alain Kaloyeros, president of the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute.

The Justice Department announced public corruption charges on Thursday against nine people, including two former top aides to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a senior state official, and six others allegedly involved in bribery and state contracts. After pleading guilty to eight counts including extortion, conspiracy, and wire fraud, one of Gov. Cuomo’s former aides is currently cooperating with investigators and will be expected to testify against his co-conspirators.

Before working as an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Todd Howe also worked with his father, Gov. Mario Cuomo, while serving as the secretary of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. According to court documents, Howe and another aide to Andrew Cuomo, Joseph Percoco, had accepted bribes in exchange for the approval of state-funded development projects.

Between 2012 and 2016, Percoco and his wife allegedly accepted more than $315,000 in bribes from companies seeking political favours. According to the complaint, representatives from Competitive Power Ventures, COR Development, and LPCiminelli conspired to bribe Cuomo’s aides in order to receive lucrative state contracts. Since 2012, Percoco’s wife, Lisa Toscano-Percoco worked as a consultant to Competitive Power Ventures while the company allegedly bribed her in order to gain approval to build a power plant in the Hudson Valley.

Besides charging two former Cuomo aides with multiple counts of bribery, extortion, and fraud, federal prosecutors also announced public corruption charges against state official, Alain Kaloyeros, president of the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute. Due to his longstanding friendship with Cuomo, Kaloyeros has reportedly overseen millions of dollars in state funding.

Other defendants named in the complaint include Competitive Power Ventures lobbyist Peter Galbraith Kelly Jr., COR Development President Steven Aiello, COR executive Joseph Gerardi, LPCiminelli founder Louis Ciminelli, and LPCiminelli executives Michael Laipple and Kevin Schuler. Kelly is accused of delivering bribes to Percoco’s wife, while Aiello and Gerardi allegedly paid Percoco $35,000 in bribes to promote COR’s development projects.

After serving as Cuomo’s executive deputy secretary, Percoco resigned earlier this year to accept a position at Madison Square Garden. Cuomo’s other former aide, Howe, left the administration to become a lobbyist.

Despite the fact that Howe has pleaded guilty to eight counts including extortion, conspiracy, and wire fraud, Percoco’s attorney, Barry Bohrer, announced on Thursday that his client will plead not guilty to the federal corruption charges.

Howe’s lawyer recently told The Wall Street Journal, “Mr. Howe has accepted responsibility for his actions and will testify truthfully if called upon.”

Chinese Phosphate Mine Cheated Ugandans of their Land Titles*

Chinese Phosphate Mine Cheated Ugandans of their Land Titles*

By Richard Smallteacher

Villagers in Tororo district, Uganda, not far from the Kenyan border, say that Guangzhou Dongsong Energy, a company from China, has conspired with the government to cheat them out of their land titles in order to build a $600 million phosphate mine and industrial complex.

The local community has opposed the development ever since the area was surveyed for minerals by the wealthy Madhvani family of Ugandan-born Indians in 2008. The Madhvanis announced that the region held an estimated 206 million tonnes of minerals and offered to build a mine.

But in late 2014 the Ugandan government spurned the Madhvanis and signed a deal with Guangzhou Dongsong Energy to build the Osukuru Industrial Complex which would include a phosphate and rare earth mine, a fertilizer factory, a steel mill and a power plant worth over $600 million. The company claimed it would create at least 1,000 jobs, produce 300,000 tonnes of phosphate fertilizer and 300,000 tonnes of steel annually, while generating some 1.6 trillion Ugandan shillings ($466 million) in revenue a year.

The planned development could displace as many as 12,000 people in 14 villages located in the 26.5 square kilometres of land that Guangzhou Dongsong has been awarded. The Chinese company obtained a $240 million loan from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China for the project.

The local community agreed to drop their opposition in exchange for land titles. ABMAK Associates, the lawyers for Guangzhou Dongsong Energy, say that villagers were paid at the rate of 30 million shillings ($8,750) per acre for a 99 year lease.

Some local villagers say that they are pleased with the deal.

“Look at my beautiful house. Before it was constructed for me by the Chinese, I was living in a grass-thatched hut,” Henry Okwalanga, told a website called ChinAfrica, which described him as ‘over the moon’ that he finally had a solid roof over his head. “

“I have benefited a lot from the project.”

But since then, many other locals have come forward to say that they did not understand the terms of the contract that they signed.

“When I went in, they opened for me pieces of paper and said you sign here. I first hesitated and asked where the rest of the (project affected) people were, they told me if I don’t want the money, I should get out, and if I don’t sign my land would be taken by government for free,” Rose Tibita told Oil in Uganda, a website operated by Action Aid.

“To my surprise, they have taken our money, our land and no land title has been given to any of us. Why should government connive with an investor to cheat its own people?” Vincent Matano told Oil in Uganda.

The lawyers say that they believe that they did an ‘excellent’ job of compensating the villagers.

“We are not one hundred percent clean, but this … should be a case study,” Denis Kusasira, the managing partner of ABMAK Associates, told Oil in Uganda.

“Even when you do everything well, they [NGOs] will still find something to complain about.”

Local politicians say they will take up the villager’s cause to negotiate a better deal, such as a short 21 year leave.

“I will have to fight for my people. I’m going to raise all these issues with the investor and the ministry and if possible these agreements will be reviewed,” Apollo Jaramogi, the newly elected district chairman told Oil in Uganda.

Malaysia Launches Logo for Products Made Purely by Muslims*

Malaysia Launches Logo for Products Made Purely by Muslims*

By Bethan McKernan

A Malaysian organisation has created a new logo to denote products made by Muslim businesses.

The Malaysian Institute of International Islamic Corporation (Ikiam), together with the Malaysian Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda), says the logo will be designed and produced early next year.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia already uses an official halal logo for products manufactured in the country, but an Ikiam spokesperson said that the new designation will help clarify if products are made in a halal environment after worries some companies were bending the rules.

Halal – or ‘permissible’ in Arabic – mostly governs what observant Muslims are allowed to eat. Pork and its by-products and alcohol are forbidden by the Qur’an.

Halal standards also apply to products such as cosmetics, which can contain animal-derived products, and how food and other products are prepared and stored.

There are about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, and the global halal food market is worth $632bn (£487bn), or 16% of the global food industry, the United States Halal Association says, and the global Shari’ah-compliant product market is worth more than $2tn annually.

“The need for another halal logo is to distinguish products that were produced by Muslims against that of non-Muslims…[to help] Muslim entrepreneurs make forays into the halal markets locally and abroad,” Risda chair Zahidi Zainul Abidin said.

Only 11% of Muslim-owned companies are currently registered as halal-compliant for the export market with Malaysia’s Trade and Industry ministry, Abidin added.

“At the regional level, for example, a Muslim company with 60 branches across China has recently asked Risda to supply halal products to them. So, halal business opportunity abounds,” he said.

Last year Malaysia launched its first halal-compliant airline.

All meals on Rayani Air are halal, alcohol consumption is prohibited, and there are prayer recitals before takeoff.

Iceland’s Capital Votes to Boycott All Israeli Products*

Iceland’s Capital Votes to Boycott All Israeli Products*

By Whitney Webb

The city council of Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, has voted to ban all Israeli-made goods in protest of the continuing “occupation of Palestinian territories” and Israel’s “policy of apartheid” against Palestinians. Concerns regarding Israel’s policies towards the Palestinians were renewed following Israel’s announcement in July that it would build Israeli homes in the contested West Bank, inciting violent protests.

Most countries consider these new settlements as well as previous ones illegal and even the US State Department has expressed its concerns over Israeli settlement expansion. In the past, Reykjavik’s city council has been critical of Israel and has previously adopted resolutions that acknowledge Palestinian rights to independence and a sovereign nation. According to Iceland’s foreign ministry, the small island nation purchased $6 million of Israeli imports, most of which in the form of fruits and vegetables, equipment, and machinery.

Iceland’s national government said that the boycott would only be limited to the country’s capital and has tried to distance itself from the action of Reykjavik’s city council. Yet, as Iceland’s largest city and home to half its population, Reykjavik’s decision to boycott Israel will likely cause some economic impact though it is hard to say whether or not it will be significant. Israeli exports totalled $53.7 billion in 2014, meaning its exports to Iceland represent a meagre 1.1% of its total annual exports.

Overall, it appears that Israel is much more concerned with the symbolic impact of the boycott as opposed to its economic effects as they have been actively fighting against several recent international boycotts in response to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people, most notably the BDS movement (Boycott, Divest, Sanctions).

Concerns about the growth of boycott movements have led Israel to pass legislation allowing for the deportation of foreign activists, to threaten the lives of BDS supporters, and to lobby for legislation in other countries to prevent future boycotts. They have even teamed up with Facebook to try and prevent criticism of Israel on social media.

Israel’s government responded to news of Reykjavik’s boycott with harsh criticism. Emmanuel Nahshon, Israel’s foreign minister, responded by saying:

“A volcano of hatred is erupting out of the city council building in Reykjavik. Without any reason or justification, other than pure hatred, we hear calls to boycott Israel. We hope someone in Iceland comes to their senses and stops the blindness and the one-sidedness that is directed at Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East.”

Some Icelanders were also critical of the boycott, including a local attorney who said the ban on Israeli goods violates the Icelandic constitution. It remains to be seen if Israel will take action against Iceland as a result of the new boycott.
