CETA Deal About to Be Ratified – Investors to Attack Public Interest Safeguards*

By Graham Vanbergen

Recently, TruePublica published an article entitled “Reported Death Of TTIP – An Abhorrent Political Deception“. It was published all over the world, translated into various languages and cited in reports, articles and websites too numerous to mention. The story was about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership or TTIP and its reported demise after French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel allegedly agreed that negotiations between the E.U. and the U.S. on TTIP, had essentially failed.

No TTIP Deal This Year between the E.U. and U.S. this Year*

What we reported from sources close to the TTIP negotiations was that Valls and Gabriel were lying because both France and Germany have upcoming elections in 2017 and that neither Hollande or Merkel would have any chance of re-election if TTIP was either signed or soon to be, such is the public opposition to the trade deal.

However, whilst the vast majority of citizens have fallen for the mainstream media story about TTIP’s demise, all it was doing was shielding them from another truth. CETA is about to be ratified. Don’t be fooled just because this is a deal between Canada and the E.U. Any U.S. corporation with subsidiaries located in Canada will have the same rights under the CETA trade deal. It is TTIP in disguise. A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

This from Corporate Europe Observatory:

A new report on the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) reveals how the trade deal could make E.U. member states vulnerable to costly lawsuits from North American investors that threaten public interest

Days before E.U. trade ministers meet in Bratislava to decide on the CETA ratification process, Corporate Europe Observatory, Friends of the Earth Europe, the European Public Services Union (EPSU) and twenty other European civil society organisations publish ‘CETA – Trading Away Democracy’. The report shows that the investment chapter of CETA remains a substantial threat to European democratic decision-making.

Once ratified, CETA will codify the right for Canadian and U.S. investors with subsidiaries in Canada to sue E.U. member states as well as the European Union for legislation which could negatively affect their profits. CETA does not include any obligations for those investors.

Existing trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement show that the majority of such cases are filed over laws protecting public health, the environment and labour rights, pitting corporate profits against the public interest.

As highlighted in the report, the investment chapter of CETA will lead to a boom in investor claims. These claims are to be decided in arbitration courts located outside the framework of national and European Union jurisdictions. This parallel justice system makes court proceedings expensive, untransparent and biased, which burdens public budgets and challenges democratic decision-making.

Despite wide-spread public mobilisation against key aspects of the agreement – notably its investment chapter – CETA is supposed to be signed before the end of this year.

Global Justice also confirmed that Canada has itself fought and lost a plentiful and diverse range of legal cases brought by U.S. corporations under the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) for “outlawing carcinogenic chemicals in petrol, reinvesting in local communities and halting the devastation of quarries.

In another piece published by TruePublica just a few days ago, new research shows that

Today, of the 100 wealthiest economic entities in the world, 69 are now corporations and only 31 countries*. This is up from 63 to 37 a year ago. At this rate, within a generation we will be living in a world entirely dominated by giant corporations.”

These insidious and deceitful trade deals will be sold to the British people as global trade agreements, heralded as a great success due to ‘Brexit’ and supported by much of the media who themselves have a vested interest in them.

In reality, these upcoming trade deals threaten our already weak democracies and pave the way for an attack on the environment, health systems, food, jobs, public services, digital rights and much more. In a bizarre twist one should not forget another reality. Let’s say that the general public got so angry that mass protests over, say, fracking eventually resulted in the government deciding to outlaw it to save their political skins. The government (AKA the tax-payer) would then end up paying compensation to corporations for the loss of expected profits. The fines would be paid through general taxation leading to (more austerity??) more public anger.

Former Israeli President Shimon Peres Dies at 93*

Former Israeli president Shimon Peres has died almost two weeks after suffering a stroke.

The Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Aviv pronounced the 93-year-old Peres dead at 0000 GMT on Wednesday.

He had been rushed to hospital on September 13 following chest pains, an abnormal heartbeat and severe internal bleeding.

While he was in the hospital, officials had described his condition as serious and had put him in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit.

Peres had held numerous positions in the Israeli regime during his seven decades of political life. He had served as the regime’s premier and military chief and most recently as its president.

Under Peres’ tenure as president, i.e. 2007-2014, two full-scale wars were launched against the Palestinian sliver of the Gaza Strip, which together killed some 3,700 Palestinians.

Peres from the perspective of his victims

By Ilan Pappe

Officials and mourners surround coffins covered with Lebanese flags during a mass funeral in the southern Lebanese town of Tyre, 30 April 1996. The victims were killed in an Israeli artillery attack on a UN base in Qana, in southern Lebanon, on 18 April as part of an operation ordered by then Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

The obituaries for Shimon Peres have already appeared, no doubt prepared in advance as the news of his hospitalization reached the media.

The verdict on his life is very clear and was already pronounced by U.S. President Barack Obama: Peres was a man who changed the course of human history in ‘his relentless search for peace’ in the Middle East.

My guess is that very few of the obituaries will examine Peres’ life and activities from the perspective of the victims of Zionism and Israel.

He occupied many positions in politics that had immense impact on the Palestinians wherever they are. He was director general of the Israeli defence ministry, minister of defence, minister for development of the Galilee and the Negev (Naqab), prime minister and president.

In all these roles, the decisions he took and the policies he pursued contributed to the destruction of the Palestinian people and did nothing to advance the cause of peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis.

Born Szymon Perski in 1923, in a town that was then part of Poland, Peres immigrated to Palestine in 1934. As a teenager in an agricultural school, he became active in politics within the Labour Zionist movement that led Zionism and later the young State of Israel.

As a leading figure in the movement’s youth cadres, Peres attracted the attention of the high command of the Jewish paramilitary force in British-ruled Palestine, the Haganah.

Nuclear bomb

In 1947, Peres was fully recruited to the organization and sent abroad by its leader David Ben-Gurion to purchase arms which were later used in the 1948 Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, and against the Arab contingents that entered Palestine that year.

After a few years abroad, mainly in the United States, where he was busy purchasing arms and building the infrastructure for the Israeli military industry, he returned to become director general of the defence ministry.

Peres was active in forging Israel’s collusion with the U.K. and France to invade Egypt in 1956, for which Israel was rewarded by France with the needed capacity to build nuclear weapons.

Indeed it was Peres himself who largely oversaw Israel’s clandestine nuclear weapons program.

No less important was the zeal Peres showed under Ben-Gurion’s guidance and inspiration to Judaize the Galilee. Despite the 1948 ethnic cleansing, that part of Israel was still very much Palestinian countryside and landscape.

Peres was behind the idea of confiscating Palestinian land for the purpose of building exclusive Jewish towns such as Karmiel and Upper Nazareth and basing the military in the region so as to disrupt territorial contiguity between Palestinian villages and towns.

This ruination of the Palestinian countryside led to the disappearance of the traditional Palestinian villages and the transformation of the farmers into an underemployed and deprived urban working class. This dismal reality is still with us today.

Settlers’ champion

Peres disappeared for a while from the political scene when his master Ben-Gurion, Israel’s founding prime minister, was pushed aside in 1963 by a new generation of leaders.

He came back after the 1967 War and the first portfolio he held was as minister responsible for the occupied territories. In this role, he legitimized, quite often retroactively, the settlement drive in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

As so many of us realize today, by the time the pro-settlement Likud party came to power in 1977, the Jewish settlement infrastructure, in particular in the West Bank, had already rendered a two-state solution an impossible vision.

In 1974, Peres’ political career became intimately connected to that of his nemesis, Yitzhak Rabin. The two politicians who could not stand each other, had to work in tandem for the sake of political survival.

However, on Israel’s strategy toward the Palestinians, they shared the Zionist settler-colonial perspective, coveting as much of Palestine’s land as possible with as few Palestinians on it as possible.

They worked well together in quelling brutally the Palestinian uprising that began in 1987.

Peres’ first role in this difficult partnership was as defense minister in the 1974 Rabin government. The first real crisis Peres faced was a major expansion of the messianic settler movement Gush Emunim’s colonization effort in and around the West Bank city of Nablus.

Rabin opposed the new settlements, but Peres stood with the settlers and those colonies that now strangulate Nablus are there thanks to his efforts.

In 1976, Peres led government policy on the occupied territories, convinced that a deal could be struck with Jordan, by which the West Bank would be within Jordanian jurisdiction but under effective Israeli rule.

He initiated municipal elections in the West Bank but to his great surprise and disappointment, the candidates identified with the Palestine Liberation Organization were elected and not the ones loyal to Jordan’s Hashemite monarchy.

But Peres remained faithful to what he named the “Jordanian option” as an opposition leader after 1977 and when he returned to power in coalition with the Likud in 1984-1988. He pushed forward the negotiations on the basis of this concept until King Hussein’s decision to cede any political connection between Jordan and the West Bank in 1988.

Israel’s international face

The 1990s exposed to the world to a more mature and coherent Peres. He was Israel’s international face, whether in government or outside it. He played this role even after the Likud ascended as the main political force in the land.

In power, in Rabin’s government in the early 1990s, as prime minister after Rabin’s 1995 assassination, and then as a minister in the cabinet of Ehud Barak from 1999 to 2001, Peres pushed a new concept for what he called “peace.”

Instead of sharing rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with Jordan or Egypt, he now wished to do it with the Palestine Liberation Organization. The idea was accepted by PLO leader Yasser Arafat, who may have hoped to build on this a new project for the liberation of Palestine.

As enshrined in the 1993 Oslo accords, this concept was enthusiastically endorsed by Israel’s international allies.

Peres was the leading ambassador of this peace process charade that provided an international umbrella for Israel to establish facts on the ground that would create a greater apartheid Israel with small Palestinian bantustans scattered within it.

The fact that he won a Nobel Peace Prize for a process that advanced the ruination of Palestine and its people is yet another testimony to world governments’ misunderstanding, cynicism and apathy toward their suffering.

We are fortunate to live in an era in which international civil society has exposed this charade and offers, through the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement and the growing support for the one-state solution, a more hopeful and genuine path forward.

As prime minister, Peres had one additional “contribution” to make to the history of Palestinian and Lebanese suffering.

In response to the endless skirmishes between Hizballah and the Israeli army in southern Lebanon, where Hizballah and other groups resisted the Israeli occupation that began in 1982 until they drove it out in 2000, Peres ordered the bombing of the whole area in April 1996.

During what Israel dubbed Operation Grapes of Wrath, Israeli shelling killed more than 100 people – civilians fleeing bombardment and U.N. peacekeepers from Fiji – near the village of Qana.

Despite a United Nations investigation that found Israel’s explanation that the shelling had been an accident to be “unlikely,” the massacre did nothing to dent Peres’ international reputation as a “peacemaker.”

In this century, Peres was more a symbolic figurehead than an active politician. He founded the Peres Center for Peace, built on confiscated Palestinian refugee property in Jaffa, which continues to sell the idea of a Palestinian “state” with little land, real independence or sovereignty as the best possible solution.

That will never work, but if the world continues to be committed to this Peres legacy, there will be no end to the suffering of the Palestinians.

Shimon Peres symbolized the beautification of Zionism, but the facts on the ground lay bare his role in perpetrating so much suffering and conflict. Knowing the truth, at least, helps us understand how to move forward and undo so much of the injustice Peres helped create.

Under the EPA, Kenya will have to open its market to European goods

The six African countries threatened with losing access to the European single market have finally agreed to sign the E.U’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). But the continent’s regional integration may suffer as a result. EurActiv France reports.

Kenya’s parliament last Wednesday (21 September) ratified the European Union EPA, signalling the end of a drawn-out struggle between several African countries and the European Commission, over the future of their trade relations with the E.U.

In July, Brussels had upped the pressure on six African governments, threatening to suspend their single market access if they had not ratified the new agreements by 1 October.

Customs duties

Faced with a tax on their E.U. exports if they failed to cooperate, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Kenya all finally agreed to ratify their Economic Partnership Agreements, bringing the lengthy negotiation process to an end.

These EPAs replace the non-reciprocal trade agreements granted by the EU under the Cotonou agreement, signed in June 2000. The aim is to maintain the preferential access to the European market enjoyed by the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, in return for reduced customs duties for European exports.

But the balance of the new agreements has attracted criticism from certain African countries, as well as civil society organisations, which say the dice are weighted in favour of the EU. The loss of customs revenue, coupled with competition from European products arriving on less development markets, is a major cause for concern.

EU seals free trade deal with West Africa

Negotiators from West Africa and the E.U. have put pen to paper on a €42 billion-a-year free trade deal after 10 years of haggling, but ongoing talks with East African states remain mired in fine print.

Integration in East Africa

Following the ratification by the Kenyan parliament, the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Adan Mohamed, said that if he had allowed the EU’s October ultimatum to pass, “[Kenyan] products would have become un-competitive on the European market, as they would have been taxed at 22%”.

Kenya is part of the region known to the E.U. as the East Africa Community (EAC), and would have been the only member of this trade zone to see EU customs barriers re-established if it refused to sign the EPA.

It is the only EAC country not under the “everything but arms” regime. Reserved for the least developed countries (LDCs), this beneficial trade regime offers toll-free access to the European market with no reciprocal demands.

The other members of the EAC (Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda), which do enjoy this preferential access, were never at risk of losing it.

Tanzania and Brexit

“For Tanzania, the ultimatum has never been an issue because the country is among the LDCs, so it has free access to the European market under the “everything but arms” regime,” a European Commission spokesperson said.

With guaranteed access to the single market, the country has little to gain from signing the EPA, which would oblige it to progressively open its own market to European products.

“Tanzania cannot be forced to sign because it has LDC status, whereas for Kenya, the effect would have been immediate,” said Marc Maes, the head of European trade policy for the Coalition of the Flemish North South Movement.

And the country has so far refused to ratify the agreement. This is a threat to the region’s economic integration, as each East African country would be forced to come up with its own agreement with the E.U., instead of signing a single regional EPA.

Brexit is another concern for Tanzania. “75% of this country’s exports go to the United Kingdom, so Brexit calls into question the relevance of this EPA,” said Maes.

In 2000, the European Union and the countries of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP group) signed the Cotonou agreement, which foresaw the negotiation of economic partnership agreements (EPAs), including reciprocal free trade from 2008.

Since then, the E.U. has been negotiating economic partnership agreements with the ACP group, to replace the Cotonou and Lomé agreements.

Under the terms of the agreement, the countries of the Global South were obliged to open their markets to most products from the European Union.

Only one such regional agreement has been signed so far, due to the strong reservations expressed by civil society organisations and states.

Emergency Exorcists Wanted*

Emergency Exorcists Wanted*

Experts from the Catholic Church in Italy and the US have said that exorcists are needed as never before, because more and more people are trying… Satanism.

Exorcism experts say there is a pressing need to find a solution.

“The lack of exorcists is a real emergency. There is a pastoral emergency as a result of a significant increase in the number of diabolical possessions that exorcist priests are confronting,” Valter Cascioli, a psychologist and scientific consultant to the International Association of Exorcists, which is endorsed by the Vatican, told the Italian La Stampa newspaper.

“The number of people who take part in occult and satanic practices, which lead to serious physical, psychological and spiritual damages, is constantly rising,” he added.

It’s young people who are particularly at risk, Cascioli also said, as they use the internet a lot.

“It is dangerous to underestimate a phenomenon that is caused by the direct actions of the devil, but also by a decline in faith and values.”

So, how do we cast the Devil out of our kids?

Literally, Cascioli says. He is urging for colleges or a university to be set up specifically to educate exorcists.

“There doesn’t exist a training institution at university level. We need an interdisciplinary approach in which science collaborates with religion, and psychiatrists work with demonologists and exorcists,” he said.

While Cascioli insists that demonic possessions are on the rise, he admits that they are about a hundred times less frequent than they seem to be – the remaining 99% are down-to-earth psychological issues.

What are the symptoms of being possessed by a demon, then?

Things like vomiting metal objects, speaking in dead languages like Aramaic, ancient Greek and Latin, and reacting violently to “prayers of liberation” and to holy water. That is according to Father Ildebrando Di Fulvio, exorcist for the diocese of Frosinone, a town south of Rome, as cited by The Telegraph.

The Italian experts’ concerns are echoed in the U.S. Two of America’s top exorcists, Father Gary Thoma and Father Vincent Lampert, told The Telegraph that a surge in ‘pagan practices,’ failures in mental health care, and a spiritual void all add up to the situation.

“We’re gaining all sorts of knowledge, but there’s still that emptiness within us that is being filled with addictive behavior such as drugs and pornography. The decline in faith goes hand in hand with the rise in evil, said Father Lampert, of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

“I am a full-time pastor and this is a very intense ministry. Almost every free night that I have is taken up with exorcisms,” Father Thomas, the official exorcist of the diocese of San Jose in northern California, told The Telegraph.

Monsanto Loses GMO Permit in Mexico*

Monsanto Loses GMO Permit in Mexico*

By Jeremiah Jones

Many countries around the world have now completely banned genetically modified food and the pesticides that go with them, or at least have severe restrictions against them. Now Mexico can be added to the list!

According to The Yucatan Times, This comes after the world has experienced a massive resistance against Monsanto and other biotech giants that manufacture GMOs and pesticides.

The resistance is also a result of a multitude of studies that have emerged showing the environmental and health dangers that are associated with pesticides, as well as health dangers that could be associated with GMOs.

The most recent country in the headlines for banning Monsanto products is Mexico. A group of beekeepers was successful in stopping Monsanto from planting soybeans that are genetically modified to resist their Round-up herbicide.

Monsanto had originally received a permit to plant its GM seeds on over 250,000 hectares of land, which equates to approximately 620,000 acres. That’s a lot of land and a lot of pesticide! They were able to get the permit despite thousands of citizens, beekeepers, Greenpeace, Mayan farmers, The National Institute of Ecology and other major environmental groups protesting against it.

“A district judge in the state of Yucatán last month overturned a permit issued to Monsanto by Mexico’s agriculture ministry, Sagarpa, and environmental protection agency, Semarnat, in June 2012 that allowed commercial planting of Round-up ready Soybeans. In withdrawing the permit, the judge was convinced by the scientific evidence presented about the threats posed by GM soy crops to honey production in the Yucatán peninsula, which includes Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán states. Co-existence between honey production and GM soybeans is not possible, the judge ruled.”

Mexico is the fourth largest honey producer and fifth largest honey exporter in the world.

The pesticides ARE killing the bees, and farmers are unable to export pollen from GMO crops! If the honey is made from GMO crops, then the European market becomes unavailable due to the European ban that has been in place since 2001.

With the myriad of scientific information showing the dangers of pesticides used on GM foods and the physical disappearance of much of the bee population, isn’t it about time to reconsider what we call “food?” Isn’t it time to reconsider filling the fields with death?

It is time for American leaders to listen to the dozens of other countries that have banned GM food!

“Are contemporary parents doing something wrong if they teach their children to identify with the gender they are given at birth?”

Until recently, this question would be considered absurd, but the Masonic Jewish central banking cartel and their lackeys are erasing the gender division fundamental to the natural order.

At war with God, they want to turn Reality upside down.

They make unnatural seem natural, sick seem healthy, insane seem sane, ugly seem beautiful, evil seem good and false seem true.  Society is  satanically possessed by Cabalist JudaismFreemasonry and their myriad proxies.

By Brianna Sharbaugh

Transgenderism has taken over the headlines in American culture, even though research tells us the LGBTQ community represents less than 4% of the country’s population. This small but mighty community has me thinking, as a mom, what I’ll teach my son about gender. Are contemporary parents doing something wrong if they teach their children to identify with the gender they are given at birth?

Five Reasons I am Teaching My Son That He Is a Boy

  1. Kids Frequently Change Their Minds

Kids are fickle. While walking through the grocery store with my son, he transforms from a lion to a monkey to an elephant at a moment’s notice. Children are indecisive, and choosing a gender does not change that fact. Research tells us the decision to transition during childhood is almost always met with regret. In fact, the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) reports that “as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after natural passing through puberty.” That same manual states: “…many children with gender dysphoria outgrow it as they age.”

  1. Society Has Changed Its Mind

The concept of transgenderism is one that has evolved drastically over that last forty years. Until the 1950s “[homosexuality], fetishism, gender identity disorder, and associated conditions were… regarded as types of sexual perversion that were considered ethically objectionable.” Within that same decade, the first sex-reassignment surgery was performed and the new concept of gender (rather than biological sex) was introduced. From then until 1980 psychologists referred to trans-sexualism as the DSM-III and DSM-IV created different categories of the disorder. In 2013’s updated version of the DSM, the disorder was given a new name: gender dysphoria. The name change was “an attempt to include only a medical designation of people who have suffered due to the gender disparity” so that only those troubled by their transgenderism were considered mentally ill. What other changes will the DSM tell us to accept in the next forty years?

  1. There are Many Dangers to Transgenderism

The most comprehensive study on transgenderism was conducted in Sweden over a thirty year time period. The Swedes, as a culture, attach very little stigma to transgenderism. The conclusion of this study is as follows:

Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behavior, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism. That same study found the “Rates of suicide are twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery.”

The American College of Pediatrics reports: Children who use puberty blockers to impersonate the opposite sex will require cross-sex hormones in late adolescence. Cross-sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) are associated with dangerous health risks including but not limited to high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke and cancer. All of this for something my son is 98% likely to change his mind about?

  1. Chromosomes Never Change

Not long ago a friend of mine welcomed a baby girl to her family. My friend was told by physicians that her daughter had “ambiguous genitalia”; they could not determine her gender based on the baby’s anatomy, so chromosome testing was employed. The tests were clear: her daughter had XX chromosomes and was, indeed, a girl. Her daughter has undergone surgeries and will need medication to balance all of the hormones interrupted by this abnormality, but her chromosomes speak for themselves: she is a girl. Paul McHugh, a former psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Medical School, published his thoughts last summer that shocked many. After forty years working with transgender individuals he remarks: Transgendered men do not become women, nor do transgendered women become men. All (including Bruce Jenner) become feminized men or masculinized women, counterfeits or impersonators of the sex with which they ‘identify.’ In that lies their problematic future. The American College of Pediatrics concludes their recent statement with: “People who identify as ‘feeling like the opposite sex’ or ‘somewhere in between’ do not comprise a third sex. They remain biological men or biological women.” No matter the hormones, surgeries, bathroom choices or types of clothing a person wears, it does not change the chromosomal reality that he or she is a man or a woman, with no third option.

  1. It Is my Job to Parent my Son

The American College of Pediatrics recently released a statement summarizing their conclusion that gender ideology harms children: Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful as child abuse. Endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents… A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. It is my job as his mother to teach my son fact from fiction. Neglecting to do so could have grave consequences in his life. The research is in favor of parents sticking to traditional teachings about their child’s biological gender.

Entire South Australia under Blackout Due to Storm*

Entire South Australia under Blackout Due to Storm*

The entire Australian state of South Australia has lost power after a powerful storm rolled in during the early morning UTC hours of September 28, 2016. This complex weather system will be affecting South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania over the next three days.

The blackout occurred at 06:48 UTC (16:18 ACST) after a lightning struck an interconnector in Port Augusta region and caused the failure of South Australian electricity network.

Major traffic disruptions were reported across the state, especially in Adelaide. Local media reported cars were moving about 5 m (16 feet) in 10 minutes. All of the shops are closed. Everybody should avoid travel if possible.

The state Premier, Jay Weatherill, said the power outage could continue for an extended period and urged neighbors to reach out and help each other.

“The low developed overnight in the Great Australian Bight and ahead of it we’ve seen moisture streaming in over South Australia, a line of thunderstorms developed there and we do have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning current,” BOM said.

A Storm Force Wind Warning is in effect for parts of the South Australian coast and for much of the remainder of the southern and southeast coastlines Gale Warnings are in place for Wednesday and Thursday, September 29.

Wind gusts between 90 and 120 km/h (56 and 74 mph) are expected along the South Australian coastal fringe, through inland New South Wales and Victoria. In elevated areas, up to 110 km/h (68.3 mph).

A Severe Weather Warnings for heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is in effect in parts of New South Wales and Victoria, Flood Watches are in effect for the three southern states where rainfall over the next three days could lead to new river rises. There are still 22 Flood Warnings through the very saturated parts of eastern Australia, and the region may see some renewed and prolonged river rises with this additional rainfall.

On Thursday morning, September 29, forecasters expect seas up to 10 metres (32.8 feet) will be impacting the South Australian coastal regions.

Heaviest falls are expected in quite a short period of 6 to 12 hours, and the heaviest are expected around the northeast ranges of Victoria and southwest slopes of New South Wales.

Up to around 80 mm (3.4 inches) of rain is expected. The northeast part of Tasmania could receive up to 100 mm (3.9 inches). Overall from this system, widespread falls of 20 to 40 mm (0.8 to 1.6 inches) can be expected, but around more elevated peaks or with thunderstorm activity we could see falls up to 80 to 100 m (3.1 to 3.9 inches) .

“We have a lot of warnings in place it’s very important if you’re in these areas that you follow advice for emergency services,” the office warned.

Regional Director for the Bureau of Meteorology in Tasmania Mr. John Bally said their northern catchments are already near capacity and even relatively modest falls of rain are likely to lead to strong river rises particularly in the South Esk, Macquarie, Meander, North Esk and Jordan rivers leading to minor to moderate flooding.

Allah’s Medicine Chest: Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa)

Allah’s Medicine Chest: Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa)

By Hwaa Irfan

Mitragyna Speciosa is found in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. The African species are sometimes classed in a separate genus, Hallea are often found in swamps. Mitragyna Speciosa can be found in its indigenous locations (Thailand,  Indonesia,  Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, New Guinea, the Sunda isles,.  It has all the same properties as opiates without containing the actual chemicals.

It was used as a cure all for various physical and mental ailments in Thailand.Thai labourers and  farmers chewed on leaves to overcome effects of working under prolonged sun exposure. In the West, Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals in the early 19th century described its flowers as reminding him somewhat of a Bishop’s mitre so he named this tree Mitragyna. Yet, it is only within the past 15 years that Kratom has been used in the West.

Thai Kratom

Kratom is in the same family as the coffee tree, Rubiaceae. Known as biak biak, ketum (Malaysia), kakaum, kraton, ithang, and thom (Thailand), the leaves are widely chewed in countries where the tree grows naturally. Mitragyna Speciosa trees are evergreen and are extremely important to its natural environment , not only because they prevent erosion of the river banks where they are found. As such, it grows best in lots of sunlight and water, and requires very rich, fertile soil. It is drought sensitive, and if grown out of its native habitat, sensitive to frost. The tree reaches a height of 50ft, and spreads more than 15ft with a straight trunk.. The leaves grow opposite each other on the branch and are dark – light green with an ovate shape with a tapered end. The veins of the leaves range from white/green-veins to red-veins.The leaves shed and are continuously replaced throughout the year. The flowers are yellow and grow in clusters, and the seeds are winged. The Mitragyna Speciosa is most potent in late summer autumn and early winter when grown in its natural habitat.

Maeng Deng leaves have a very strong smell. Can be used as an aphrodisiac

Chemical analysis has shown that some kratom products are adulterated with other substances. In some cases the kratom has been “cut” with less expensive herbs to reduce the seller’s cost and increase profits. In some cases synthetic drugs have been added to enhance the effects. In some cases products kratom extract don’t contain any kratom. Disturbingly, some products labeled as kratom extracts have been found to contain the “designer drug” O-desmethyltramadol, which is a dangerously potent synthetic opioid drug. Sadly, products containing this compound have resulted in several deaths (first reported in Sweden).

Analysis has also found kratom laced with hydrocodone and morphine. Obviously, it is important to obtain kratom from a trustworthy source

Borneo Kratom

Chemical Properties differ according to the plant component, and area grown. They include:

  • 7-OH-mitragynine (alkaloid)
  • 7-hydroxymitragynine – Analgesic, antidiarrhoeal, antitussive
  • 9-Hydroxycorynantheidine – Analgesic
  • Ajmalicine – Sedative (Anti-Adrenergic), increase blood flow to brain, smooth muscle relaxer
  • Akuammigine
  • Ciliaphylline – Analgesic, antitussive
  • Corynoxine A – Dopamine Mediator
  • Corynoxine B – Dopamine Mediator
  • Corynantheidine –Antagonist
  • Epicatechin (EGC) – Antioxidant, antiviral, anti-mutagenic, anti-leukemic, anti inflammatory, anti-diabetic.
  • Isomitraphylline – Immune System Stimulant
  • Isomitrafoline – Immune System Stimulant
  • Isorhynchophylline Immune System Stimulant
  • Isopteropodine – Immune System Stimulant
  • Mitragynine – Analgesic, antidiarrheal, antitussive, adrenergic receptor agonist (mild stimulant), antimalarial
  • Mitraphylline – Muscle relaxer, vasodilator, anti-hypertensive, anti-amnesic, immune system stimulant, anti-leukemic
  • Mitrafoline
  • Mitraversine
  • Rhynchophylline – Anti-inflammatory, vasodilator, anti-hypertensive
  • Tetrahydroalstonine – Anti-adrenergic, lowers blood sugar
  • Speciogynine – Smooth Muscle Relaxer
  • Speciociliatine Mild opiod receptor agonist
  • Speciophylline Anti-leukemic
  • Speciofoline
  • Stipulatine

In a study conducted by Takayama et al., 66.2% of the crude extract from the plants grown in Thailand was mitragynine, 6.6% was speciogynine, 0.8% was speciociliatine, 8.6%, was paynantheine, and 7-hydroxymitragynine was 2.0%. These five compounds were also found in the Malaysian plant, but at lower concentrations.

The latest research indicates that the main component of the herb, the alkaloid mitragynine, and its metabolite and oxidation product, 7-hydroxymitragynine, produce an effect on certain opioid receptors separate from many of the mechanisms that precipitate many opioid side effects.

In 1979, Thailand  kratom came under the Addictive Substances Law, which placed in Category V. In Malaysia, mitragynine was listed in January 2003 as a psychotropic substance of the Poisons Act of 1952; however, planting the kratom tree is not considered an offense and local law enforcement have no authority to remove the trees. It is illegal in Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Israel, Denmark, Myanmar, and South Korea. In Finland kratom is classified as a medicine that requires a prescription.

A low dose is 1 – 5gm of dried leaves, a moderate dose is 5 -15 gm, and 16+ gm is a high dose.

In 1966, bio-pirates Arnold H Beckett, and Macko Edward under Patent US 3256149 A on behalf of Smith Kline French Lab, U.S. have produced a crystalline alkaloid produced from the powdered leaves of Mitragyna speciosa using alcohol. The filtered acid solution is made basic with concentrated ammonia and extracted with ether to apply this concoction as an analgesic which happens to be more effective than codeine.

Fang Gong, Hai-peng Gu, Qi-tai Xu, and Wen-yi Kang of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, Henan University, China found strong anti-cancerous properties in M. speciosa as well as acting as a stimulant to glucose transport in muscle cells. In the African variety, M. inermis they found it induces and increases in coronary flow without inducing tachycardia.

Red Vein Kratom

West African species as M. inermis and M. stipulosa are traditionally used against malaria, the former and leukaemia. M. africanus, is used in Nigeria to treat mental illness, while M. ciliate/ ledermanni and M. stipulosa /Hallea ciliata, is used to treat inflammation, hypertension, headache, rheumatism, gonorrhoea and broncho-pulmonary diseases.

In S.E. Asia traditionally native usually collect the fresh leaves and chew them in a quid to provide relief from fatigue and aid work ethic, much as coca leaves are consumed in the Andes of South America. An average dose for beginning to moderate kratom users is between three and ten fresh leaves, while experienced kratom chewers may take as many as 20 leaves at one time, 2-3 times daily. In the fresh preparation, the leaf vein is extracted, and salt is often added to prevent constipation. Users traditionally follow the chewing of fresh kratom leaves by partaking of a hot beverage such as warm water or coffee (Murple 2006). Other ways that people consume kratom include smoking the leaves, steeping them in a tea, or making a resin extraction of the foliage. In this preparation, kratom leaves are boiled down in a bit of water until the plant material has been reduced to a tar-like consistency; the resulting resin can then be shaped into balls and rolled in an edible material like flour for storage. Resin balls keep for several weeks, making this a very popular method of storing and consuming kratom.

Kratom leaves are often chewed fresh (usually after removing the stringy central vein). Dried leaves can also be chewed, but since they are a bit tough, most people prefer to crush them up or powder them so that they can be swallowed easily. Powdered kratom can be mixed with water and then drunk. This method is quick and easy. It can also be mixed with other liquids, such as fruit juice, milk, or kefir. Chocolate milk works especially well for masking the taste. Powdered kratom can also be made into a paste that can easily be swallowed with water. The powder can also be mixed with applesauce or yogurt. It can also be put into capsules. Dried kratom leaves are often made into a tea that is strained and then drunk. Kratom can be smoked, but doing so is impractical because the amount of leaf that constitutes a typical dose is too much to be smoked easily. A resin-like extract can be prepared by evaporating the water from kratom tea. This can be stored for later use. Small pellets of this extract can be swallowed, or it can be dissolved in hot water and consumed as a tea. Some people like to mix kratom tea with ordinary black tea, or other herbal teas, before it is consumed. This is done to make it more palatable. Sugar or honey can be added to sweeten it.

It is used in folk medicine as a stimulant (at low doses), sedative (at high doses), recreational drug, pain killer, medicine for diarrhoea, and treatment for opiate addiction. Many people report that kratom is an effective treatment for arthritis, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and fibromyalgia.

When kratom is taken by itself (without mixing it with other drugs), the greatest risk is falling asleep while engaged in hazardous activities.

Kratom Tea

Kratom Tea

This is another very common preparation method, both in the west and east. Learning how to make kratom tea is fairly simple:

  • Add water to pot (3-10 ounces)
  • Add desired kratom dose
  • Simmer for 15 – 45 minutes (20 minutes typically suffices)
  • Optional: strain powder

Tea is considered effective by many because of the quick onset of effects; however, by straining out the powder, one may lose the full alkaloid spectrum of the plain leaf, reducing some medicinal potentials.

Tea Tips

  • Adding water to kratom powder and freezing prior to making tea can increase the amount of alkaloids absorbed
  • Adding lemon juice, or small amounts of citric acid can also increase amount of alkaloids absorbed
  • One can salvage the strained powder from tea and reuse it to ensure no alkaloids are wasted

In Thailand addiction was equated with dependence, inability to quit using kratom and a strong desire for kratom when not using it. Withdrawal symptoms were cited by users as a physical pain in their back, legs, or muscles.

Long – term use side effects are anorexia, weight loss, insomnia, skin darkening, dry mouth, frequent urination, and constipation though this might be due to taking kratom as an extract or/and dried form.

Routine toxicologic screens do not detect kratom.
