Over 100 Civilians Dead after Recent U.S. Raids on Alleged al-Qaeda Training Camps*

By Amando Flavio

The so-called war on terror waged around the world by the United States is still raging on. The truth about this war is that every single bullet or bomb fired by United States forces drives dozens of people into the hands of militants.

The war is not hitting terrorists, as the Pentagon wants us to believe. It is the innocent civilians who are bearing the brunt of United States’ firepower. Since the United States started the war on terror in the Middle East in 2001, literally countless amounts of civilians have lost their lives in the region.

In February 2016, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) revealed that it recorded a record high civilian death and injuries on the United States war on terror in Afghanistan the previous year. UNAMA said Afghan civilian casualties’ figures in 2016 – killed or maimed from the war – stood at 11,418.

When this announcement was made by UNAMA, a former top Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) official, Jack Rice, said the indiscriminate killings of civilians by United States armed forces in Afghanistan are driving the country’s civilian population to join militant and other terrorist groups in the country. Mr Rice stated that the U.S.-led war against terror in the country is a complete sham. According to him, the rise in civilian casualties in wars waged by the United States in the Middle East and other parts of the world is a single contributing factor to the proliferation of militant and terrorist groups in these areas.

However, the United States government isn’t bothered by critics such as Mr Rice. The wars still continue and more civilians die.

Recent raids by the United States military on alleged al-Qaeda training camps in Syria and Yemen have left over 100 innocent people dead, according to human rights groups monitoring the situation in the two restive countries.

Both Syria and Yemen are ravaged by bloody civil wars. The United States is in some ways involved in these two wars. In Syria, the United States is leading a bombing campaign, claiming to target the Islamic State. The United States is again supporting a Saudi-led air campaign against rebels fighting to overthrow the current government of Yemen.

Recently, the White House announced that it is sending ground troops to Syria – though unrequested by Assad. But the truth is that U.S. ground troops have been in Syria and Yemen for some time now.  The troops gather intelligence, as well as carrying out covert raids on militants’ bases in the countries.

In late January, President Donald Trump authorized a raid on an alleged al-Qaeda headquarters located in the al Bayda Governorate in Yemen. After the raid, the Pentagon described it a success. But human rights activists told media outlets that the raid only succeeded in killing many civilians.

This compelled the United States Central Command to say its internal review team “concluded regrettably that civilian non-combatants were likely killed in the midst of a firefight” during the raid, adding that casualties may include children.

Although initial reports suggested around 10 civilians died in the raid, a subsequent investigation carried out by the BBC revealed over 50 civilians perished – the majority of them were women and children. Local residents told the BBC that although some militants sporadically use their village as a meeting place, as of the time the United States forces arrived, no militants were present in the village. Residents categorically denied the Pentagon’s claim that their village is a headquarters for al-Qaeda in the al Bayda province.  They revealed that when the United States forces arrived and started shooting, many in the village were confused, and because the country is at war, many residents have guns. They also opened fire, leading to many bombs being dropped on them by fighter jets. Residents said they retrieved over 50 bodies, many of them burned beyond recognition. The death toll was also confirmed by activists who visited the village.

As this appalling situation just passes, on March 16, U.S. drone aircraft fired missiles and dropped a 500-pound bomb outside the city of Aleppo in Syria. As usual, the Pentagon said the raid targeted al-Qaeda militants, and that it killed scores of them.

But activists have said the raid never hit any militants. According to activists, the bombs were dropped on civilians who had gathered at a local mosque in Jinah for a religious activity. It is said over 46 civilians were killed in the raid.

The Western-backed Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the scene as a “massacre,” revealing the dead were mostly civilians. Photos from the area showed rescue workers pulling mangled bodies from a mound of rubble.

“Bodies filled the space,” said Mohamed al-Shaghal, a journalist who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. He said the mosque was completely destroyed, adding that many residents are now living in fear as they don’t know when the next bomb will drop.

Members of Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance (WAR) have led demonstrations in all the major cities in Australia. Their demand was an end to the routine incarceration of Aborigines, including children. They also demanded an end to offshore processing of refugees on Manus Island and Nauru (the latter detention centre includes children). The demonstrations came only days after a broadcast on ABC television of a secretly filmed video of teenage boys being tortured in Australian youth detention centres in the Northern Territory.

Dylan Voller

The video showed teenager Dylan Voller held in restraints at a youth detention facility in Alice Springs in conditions more akin to Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo. Prior to that incident, Voller had been systematically tortured over a five year period in another Northern Territory detention centre: Voller and five other boys, all of Aboriginal heritage, were tortured (stripped, hooded, assaulted and tear-gassed).

A heart-rending letter from the Dylan, dated 26 July 2016, is published in full here…

The torture at the youth detention centre was conducted by racist and sadistic prison staff, supervised by racist and sadistic managers:

“[I] honestly believe if any young man had have walked into that cell with a loving heart and just sat down and talked to my brother and helped him through everything that he was going through, he would have sat down and played cards happily with any of those guys, but they all used force and acted intimidating and scary,” Kirra Voller (Dylan Voller’s sister).

Incredibly, the restraints shown in the video were legalised this year, but since the video was broadcast their use has been suspended.

There are now legal claims. The six youths who were mistreated at Don Dale instigated litigation against the Northern Territory Government. Dylan Voller is additionally seeking unspecified damages from the Government for injuries sustained. The Government is counter-suing two of the six boys and seeking $A160,000 for damage to prison property.

Child assaulted at Don Dale centre

The U.N. high commissioner for human rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, released a damning statement saying the allegations of torture made on the TV documentary could amount to a violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment.

In another statement, WAR declared:

“We called for all detention centres for incarcerating children to be shut down immediately. And we didn’t forget about you mob in Manus and Nauru. We have the same enemy. Our freedom is your freedom. We speak of you at every rally. No justice no peace.”

Since the video was shown on ABC TV’s “Four Corners” programme, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been forced to agree to a Royal Commission into youth detention in the Northern Territory (but refuses to extend the Commission’s inquiries into the rest of Australia).

Melbourne demo spokesperson Meriki Onus said they were tired of royal commissions:

“If they implemented the recommendations from the royal commission into deaths in custody and the royal commission into the stolen generation, I don’t think we would be protesting here today.”

Aborigine members of WAR at Melbourne demo

Aboriginal elders are demanding those involved in the torture of children at these detention centres – from centre staff and their manages, right up to senior NT ministers – be sacked. Some Aborigines are demanding the entire Northern Territory government be dissolved.

Aborigines imprisoned

Australia’s aborigines are the most imprisioned people in the world, statistics show:

  • Aboriginal people represent only 3% of the total population, yet more than 28% of Australia’s prison population are Aboriginal.
  • 48% of juveniles in custody in Australia are Aboriginal
  • The NT has the highest rate of youth detention in Australia and 95 per cent of all kids locked away there are indigenous.

Australia’s shame

The above statistics speak volumes. As a people, Australian Aborigines represent some of the poorest and under-resourced in the world, with low life expectancy and poor health generally. Almost half of Aboriginal men and over a third of women die before they turn 45 (the average life expectancy for non-indigenous Australians is 80 years).

When Australia treats its own children – Aboriginal and non-indigenous – in the way the video showed, it is not surprising that it also happily detains children – refugees – indefinitely on its island prisons. These offshore detention centres, like the barbaric youth detention centres in Australia, must be closed down.

Modern Australian society has its roots in invasion and the near decimation of the indigenous population, followed by the enslavement and dispossession of those who survived. Many Australians, however, still find it difficult to accept this scenario. But it is only when they fully confront Australia’s dark past that justice for Aboriginal Australians will finally begin to be realised.

FBI Investigate Child Sex Ring Within U.S. Police Force*

FBI Investigate Child Sex Ring Within US Police Force*

By Sean Adl-Tabatabai

The FBI are investigating a child sex ring within a U.S. police department, as part of an operation to eradicate high-level government paedophile rings in America.

According to reports, the Louiseville Police Department operate a child sex trafficking ring where officers rape children, produce and sell porn, and conduct human trafficking through a government funded youth program.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer described the horrific revelations of what goes on in the police department’s Youth Explorer program as “our worst nightmare“.

Courier-journal.com reports:

Fischer also said he had hired former U.S. Attorney Kerry Harvey to review the investigation conducted by Louisville Metro Police and determine whether “errors were made,” including by police Chief Steve Conrad.

“If there has been an injustice, it will be remedied,” Fischer said.

Harvey, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2010 as the top prosecutor in the Eastern District of Kentucky and stepped down in January, said he would conduct a “stem-to-stern review” to determine if the investigation was effective and appropriate – and if procedures were not followed, “why not.”

A lawsuit filed last week on behalf of a former Scout identified as N.C. charges that his alleged rape by Officers Kenneth Betts and Brandon Wood was “concealed” by department officials. Betts and Wood are accused of sexually assaulting the former Scout from 2011 through 2013 and recording the incidents to make porn.

The Courier-Journal reported this week that Conrad ended an investigation of alleged “improper contact” between Betts and a teenage girl in the program because Betts resigned in 2014. Wood is still with the force but on administrative assignment.

Conrad told the Courier-Journal on Friday he is “dying” to talk about the allegations but is barred from doing so by a court order sealing the lawsuit. Fischer said he expects the case will be unsealed next week.

The Courier-Journal has filed a motion to unseal the case. The city has also asked that it be unsealed.

Fischer said he first learned about misconduct in the Explorer program last October when he received a heads-up from Conrad that there would be media reports. The mayor declined to comment when asked whether additional police officers or youths were involved, citing a pending criminal investigation by the department’s Public Integrity Unit.

‘No to racism’: Around 30K in London March against Discrimination*

Around 30,000 people took to the streets of London on Saturday to protest the rise of racism, Brexit, the government’s proposed immigration policies, and U.S. President Donald Trump, ahead of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The procession started in front of the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, and then continued on towards Parliament Square, where a demonstration was held.

Protesters carried placards reading “Stand up to racism,” “Migrants and refugees are welcome here,” “No to racism,” “Stand up to Trump,” and others.

The presidency of Donald Trump and Brexit were among the focal points of the event, as protesters expressed support for migrants and refugees, condemning allegedly “racist” policies of the U.S. president and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May.

“We’ve had the election of Donald Trump, with his Muslim ban and the wall with Mexico. We’ve had the E.U. referendum, where we’ve seen the highest increase in reported hate crime in the country, showing that the scapegoating of migrants gave confidence to racists,” Zakariya Cochrane, assistant convener for Stand Up to Racism, said as cited by the Independent.

Some protesters compared Trump to Hitler, as placards showing the president sporting the distinctive mustache could be seen at the event. Donald Trump has been repeatedly accused of being “racist” or “right-wing” – allegations he firmly rejects.

Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Moazzam Begg, while delivering a speech at Parliament Square, called Trump a “bad dude,” eligible for a stay in the infamous facility.

“The rise of the far right and the Nazis and fascists has seen a new wave with the election of Donald Trump, who said when he came to power, ‘I’m going to load up Guantanamo with some bad dudes,’” Begg said.

“So my response is: ‘When are you going, dude?’”

While protesters were seemingly quite unanimous in their attitude towards Trump, their views on the correlation between Brexit and racism differed. Far-left Spartacist League activists actually praised Brexit for escaping the “racist fortress of Europe,” while demanding full citizenship and rights for migrants.

The majority of protesters, however, condemned both Brexit and the proposed strict immigration policies.

Around 15 far-right activists crossed the path of the march at Piccadilly Circus with ‘England First’ placards, but police pushed them back, with no further incidents reported.

NHS Staffing Crisis Worsens as E.U. Nurses Quit their Jobs*

Britain’s departure from the European Union is projected to deliver a severe blow to the National Health Service (NHS), the country’s healthcare system, which already suffers from serious staff shortage.

Critics have warned that U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is making the NHS staffing crisis worse by refusing to guarantee the rights of European citizens.

Britain’s withdrawal from the E.U. will force European healthcare workers to either stay away or leave the country. The country’s main association of nurses says it’s currently facing 24,000 nursing vacancies.

Almost 2,700 E.U. nurses quit their jobs in 2016, compared to 1,600 in 2014, an increase of 68%. In total, about 6,400 E.U. nationals quit the NHS in 2016, up from 5,135 in 2014.

There are an estimated 57,000 E.U. nationals working for the NHS, including 10,000 doctors and 20,000 nurses.

“The Government risks turning off the supply of qualified nurses from around the world at the very moment the health service is in a staffing crisis like never before,” said Janet Davies, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing.

“As she pulls the trigger to begin negotiations, Theresa May must tell E.U. nurses and other occupations that they are needed and welcome in the NHS. It would not survive without their contribution,” she said.

“Sadly, it is no surprise that E.U. staff are leaving – they have been offered no security or reassurance that they will be able to keep their jobs. Few are able to live with such uncertainty.”

The NHS is already under pressure because of a long-term failure to hire enough people. The British Red Cross warned in January that the NHS is facing a “humanitarian crisis” as hospitals and ambulance services struggle to keep up with rising demand.

The warning came following the deaths of two patients after long waits on trolleys in hospital corridors in Worcester.

U.K. University Granted First License to Make three-parent Embryos*

U.K. University Granted First License to Make three-parent Embryos*

By Claire Chretien

The United Kingdom’s Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority has granted Newcastle University permission to begin creating human embryos who have three parents

The chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority, Sally Cheshire, confirmed Thursday that “the HFEA has approved the first application by Newcastle Fertility at Life for the use of mitochondrial donation to treat patients.”

The U.K. first approved three-parent embryos in 2015. This will be the first time scientists will carry out the procedure, which involves killing human embryos to manufacture another.

The purpose of creating embryos this way is to attempt to modify them to not have certain genetic diseases. But bioethicists say this technique involves a multitude of ethical and moral problems.

The embryos will have DNA from two mothers and one father, Dr. David A. Prentice, vice president and director of research at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, told LifeSiteNews. A small part of the mother’s DNA will be replaced with DNA from another woman. This is done in the hopes of preventing the main mother (for lack of a better phrase) from transferring genetic diseases to the child.

“The type of technique they’re using actually involves destroying two embryos to then re-combine [their] parts for a third constructed embryo with genetics from two women and one man,” said Prentice. “This technique starts with death of young human embryos.”

“Making 3-parent embryos involves the use of cloning technologies,” the National Catholic Bioethics Center‘s Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D, told LifeSiteNews via email.

“Cloning involves swapping out the nucleus of a woman’s egg with a replacement nucleus to create an embryo,” explained Pacholczyk. The way three-parent embryos are made is “by swapping out additional cellular parts known as mitochondria through the recombination of eggs from two different women.”

Even worse, some “approaches to making three-parent embryos rely on destroying one embryo (instead of an egg) and cannibalizing its parts so as to build another embryo by nuclear transfer. This latter approach, therefore, requires an ’embryocide’ or embryo-killing step as part of the process,” he explained.

“Pro-nuclei are formed when the egg and sperm first meet,” said Prentice.

“And so in this technique, they’re taking two brand new embryos, pulling the nucleus then out of one, thereby killing that first embryo.”

Then, “they pull the nucleus out of the second one, killing it, and they recombine the nucleus from one with the cellular mass from the second – to get a third recombined embryo,” said Prentice. This means “you had to kill two embryos in the process [of] a nuclear transfer cloning type of technology.”

The created embryos will spend the first three to five days of their lives in a lab dish before being transferred to the womb.

‘Manufacturing new human beings’ as ‘experiments’

Prentice and Pacholczyk say that creating three-parent embryos will be problematic for children’s rights and older people who have the genetic diseases scientists are attempting to weed out.

“They are literally using human beings – creating human beings – as experiments,” said Prentice. “It’s not experimenting on human beings where you might be doing something to them. They are the experiment. They’re the creation. And because [scientists] don’t know what might happen eventually down the road, these little ones that are gonna be created will have to be followed the rest of their lives. And their children will have to be monitored as well.”

“Any approach that weakens or casts into question the integral connection between parents and their offspring will raise grave ethical concerns,” said Pacholczyk. “By creating three-parent embryos, we improperly subject children to the harmful psychological stressors that arise when they face uncertainties about their own origins and beginnings.”

Pacholczyk noted, “Far too often, in the world of infertility treatments, the needs of children are bypassed in the pursuit of satisfying parental desires.” He said it would be unfair to a child that he or she would need to do “research” to figure out his or her origins.

Children would be “trying to determine who contributed which sub-cellular building blocks as they were ‘put together’ with components from 3 parents by fertility specialists or lab technicians,” said Pacholczyk.

“By taking this approach, we substitute production for procreation, even though our children are absolutely entitled to the dignity of being ‘loved into being’ in the marital embrace, not custom-ordered from, or ‘mass-produced’ by, fertility clinics and research laboratories,” said Pacholczyk.

Prentice shared Pacholczyk’s concerns about “family structure and family identity” in these children who will have three biological parents.

Some people will say the amount of DNA from one of the created child’s mothers “is very small” and therefore inconsequential, Prentice predicted. “But we know” that this part of the DNA “has some effect on life and health or else they wouldn’t be trying to replace it and supplement it,” he said.

Prentice also said the mindset behind the creation of three-parent embryos is eugenic.

“This is not aimed at treating or curing anyone with these [genetic] diseases,” he said. Rather, it’s the creation of “essentially replacement people – manufacturing new human beings that they hope won’t have that disease and ignoring essentially all the people who do have the problem.”

“They are manufacturing new human beings that they hope will not carry on this particular set of genetic diseases,” said Prentice.

“But even the experimental evidence in animals and in the laboratory indicate this still may not work.”

Creating three-parent embryos means “ignoring ethical venues to treat people who have these [genetic] diseases,” said Prentice.

“They’re essentially telling the people that have these diseases that they are of no value, that they should be replaced by these manufactured human beings. It’s a sad commentary on where this particular medical science has gone.”

The president accused Almagro of intervening in the political situation in Venezuela in the service of “hegemonic interests.”

Bolivian President Evo Morales has lashed out against Secretary-General of the Organization of American States, OAS, Luis Almagro for “promoting the overthrow” of Venezuela.

In a communique published Friday, the president accused Almagro of intervening in the political situation in Venezuela in the service of “hegemonic interests.”

“The secretary-general’s interventionist and servile actions to hegemonic and extraterritorial interests not only affect the democratic stability of a member country … but also the unity of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he said.

The criticism comes after Almagro demanded that President Nicolas Maduro hold general elections within 30 days or face suspension from the organization.

Almagro is a vocal supporter of Venezuela’s right-wing opposition. Since taking charge of the OAS in 2015, the Uruguayan politician has used the organization to support the anti-government campaigns of Henrique Capriles and Leopoldo Lopez.

His latest attacks against Venezuela have inflamed President Morales who says the secretary-general has acted “without any mandate from member states … with complete treachery and arrogance.”

In response to the threats, Morales has called on fellow member states “to evaluate (Almagro’s) actions with care and objectivity.”

“It is sad and despicable that the secretary-general of the OAS, promotes the overthrow of a constitutionally-elected government. We must defend the rule of law.”
