Moreno Ocampo, a former prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC) has said that the ICC investigation regarding Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is considered to be a war crime that will likely result in the conviction of Israeli officials.

Middle East Monitor reports:

Luis Moreno Ocampo said that the settlements constitute a clear legal violation of the Rome Statute and the rules of international law, which forbids an occupying power from transferring its civilian population to an occupied territory.

Comment: Tell that to the occupied territory called the ‘U.S.’

During a special panel discussion organized by Al-Quds University yesterday evening, Ocampo said that the prosecutor’s office has gone a long way in examining the issue of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

He denied the statements attributed to him by an Israeli newspaper a year and a half ago that settlements are not illegal, pointing out that it was not the first time that the Israeli press has presented its own interpretation of statements.

In particular, he stated that what was reported in the newspaper at that time is contrary to his firm legal convictions that the transfer of the civilian population of an occupying force onto occupied land constitutes a war crime.

Ocampo explained that the case brought by the State of Palestine before the ICC has caused huge discomfort among the Israeli side and is moving the Israeli government from an attack posture to one of defence, citing a quote by an Israeli official that Israel is recruiting more lawyers than soldiers as a result of the Palestinian complaint.

Charges Dropped Against Antiwar Protesters After Videos Showed Cops Beating Them*

Charges Dropped Against Antiwar Protesters After Videos Showed Cops Beating Them*

The State Attorney’s Office has dropped all charges against two protesters who were arrested during an anti-war rally in Jacksonville, Florida. Three others have been offered pleas with reduced sentences.

In a 45-page report obtained by WJXT on Thursday, State Attorney Melissa Nelson declined to prosecute Connell Crooms and Dave Schneider, two protesters who were arrested during the April 7 incident in Jacksonville’s Hemming Park, where 200 people protested U.S. actions in Syria. When a small group of counter-protesters showed up, a fight broke out.

On Friday, Christina Kittle, Thomas Beckham and William Wilder all pleaded guilty to reduced misdemeanors charges and were sentenced to complete 25 hours of community service.

Law enforcement officers intervened and stepped in between the two groups. One officer attempted to detain Crooms after he lunged at counter-protester Gary Snow, who “flicked his middle finger over the officer’s shoulder and in the face of Crooms.”

While officers attempted to detain Crooms, several other protesters attempted to remove the officers by “physically striking, pushing, or grabbing” them, according to the report.

Five protesters were arrested for various alleged felonies, including battery on a law enforcement officer, inciting a riot and, in one case, possession of a small amount of marijuana. Snow, the counter-protester, was not arrested for his actions.

After the arrests, several videos surfaced showing officers repeatedly punching Crooms in the ribs as he was being restrained. Some criticized the officers for using excessive force on the protesters. Crooms was hospitalized as a result of these injuries sustained during the incident.

The five protesters were dubbed the “Jax 5,” and several demonstrations have been held since they were arrested, demanding that the charges against them be dropped.

The report from the state attorney’s office said they reviewed more than 30 video recordings of the incident, taken from multiple devices and angles, as well as eyewitness testimony during their investigation.

“Since April 7, 2017, we have undertaken a diligent review of all of the evidence and have analyzed the relevant law. I am confident we have reached appropriate outcomes,” the report said.

The state attorney’s office also released new footage of the arrest, which showed officers tackling Crooms and punching him while he was on the ground.

Based on the evidence uncovered during the investigation, Nelson said there was “insufficient evidence” to support the charges against Schneider. They also learned that Crooms had a congenital hearing deficiency, and said they could not “prove that he actually heard and understood the commands of law enforcement.”

The report also said that the state declined to pursue charges against counter-protester Snow, because “his speech and actions, though provocative and offensive to the Protesters, were protected by the First Amendment.”

Since the protesters did not obtain a permit, the state attorney’s office ruled that “Snow had an equal right to be in the same public space.”

“Had the protesters followed the policies of the park and obtained a permit for the use of the park, the officers would have likely been able to limit the actions of the Counter-Protesters, including Snow, by requesting that Snow relocate his protest so that he did not disturb the permitted protest event,” the report said.

Snow told WJXT that he was not surprised by the decision since he complied with the officers’ commands.

“Everyone wanted to play victim. But you know what, I complied with the police officers if they told me to do something. I did what they told me to do,” Snow said. “And if any of the Jax 5 had complied that day, we wouldn’t be here. They would’ve never been charged.”

The investigation found that there was not a reasonable probability of conviction for the offense of inciting a riot since the state must prove that the protesters did so “with the intent to incite a breach of peace and acted in concert with two or more people to accomplish this.”

And, while the video evidence did show Kittle and Wilder committing a battery on a law enforcement officer, the state agreed not to pursue prosecution on those charges either.

A Facebook page supporting the five protesters, Justice for the Jax 5, hailed the decision to drop the charges.

“We are overjoyed that the State Attorney Melissa Nelson took a stand with justice, against JSO police repression, by dropping the charges against Dave Schneider and Connell Crooms,” the group wrote. “This decision shows why there is a need for more police accountability in the City of Jacksonville and why we need a Jacksonville Police Accountability Council.”

Royal Mint Bullion Achieves Shari’ah Standard on Gold Compliance*

The Royal Mint has become the first mint worldwide to achieve compliance with the Shari’ah Standard on Gold for retail sales of its gold and silver bullion coins and bars, enabling it to serve an even wider audience of investors via trading site The move is part of the organisation’s strategy to be seen as the ‘complete bullion solution’ – offering a comprehensive range of bullion products that are suitable for a variety of investors.

Chris Howard, Director of Bullion for The Royal Mint said:

“The recent introduction worldwide of the Shari’ah Standard on Gold has enabled The Royal Mint to take the next logical step in the expansion of its ‘complete bullion solution’. Shari’ah compliance allows us to make Royal Mint bullion accessible to a wider variety of investors at a time when Islamic investment is experiencing rapid growth in the U.K. and worldwide.”

Royal Mint bullion has been endorsed as Shari’ah-compliant by Shari’ah advisory organisation Amanie Advisors, in accordance with the Shari’ah Standard on Gold. This standard is set by the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) and has been developed in co-operation with the London-based World Gold Council (WGC).

In order to achieve the endorsement, The Royal Mint has undergone scrutiny of the ways in which it markets and charges for its bullion. There has been no need for any change to The Royal Mint’s bullion product range in order to accommodate the new Shari’ah-compliant status, however, which applies to Royal Mint gold and silver bullion coins and bars, as well as Signature Gold™ – the simple and cost-effective service that enables investors to own fractions of a 400oz gold bar based on value rather than weight.

“The growth in Islamic investment globally and the clarification of how gold and silver can be included within it could drive upwards of $20bn of investment in gold over the coming years. This is a great time for The Royal Mint to be playing its part in attracting Islamic investment to the UK, by securing Shari’ah-compliant status for its bullion products” said Chris Howard.

Shari’ah-compliant gold and silver bullion is now available on The Royal Mint’s trading website The site gives customers the opportunity of buying, storing and selling The Royal Mint’s bullion coins and bars quickly and securely, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Vault™, The Royal Mint’s on-site storage facility has been welcomed by investors looking for a highly secure storage option.

Tory candidate for South Thanet among three charged after investigation into overspending in 2015 election campaign

The Conservative candidate for South Thanet, a member of his staff and a Tory election organiser have been charged over allegations of illegal election spending during the party’s 2015 campaign to win the seat.

The Crown Prosecution Service said there was sufficient evidence to charge three people, among them Craig Mackinlay, who was the MP from 2015 and is seeking re-election on 8 June. Nathan Gray, his election agent, and Marion Little, a party organiser, were also charged, the CPS said.

Mackinlay will remain on the ballot for next week’s election as nominations have closed and some postal votes will already have been submitted.

Speaking on a campaign trip to Doncaster, Theresa May said:

“The Conservative party continues to believe that these allegations are unfounded. Craig Mackinlay is innocent until proven guilty and he remains our candidate.”

Mackinlay, who was also backed by his local Conservative association, said it was “a shocking decision by the CPS” and he expected to be acquitted.

“I will not let this decision affect the hard work I do for my constituents and the hard work I hope to do for them after 8 June,” he said.

“Our justice system is underpinned by the presumption of innocence and I am confident that I will be acquitted, as I have done nothing wrong and acted honestly and properly while a candidate in 2015, and as all candidates do, acted upon advice throughout.”

A separate Conservative statement said the party was standing by Mackinlay, and referred to previous allegations against candidates, over which the CPS opted to take no action, as “politically motivated”.

This prompted the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, to say the Conservatives should be “extremely careful” about making such comments.

In 2015, Mackinlay secured a majority of just over 2,800 in South Thanet, beating the then UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, following a tense campaign. Farage is not contesting the seat again, with a local councillor, Stuart Piper, representing Ukip.

Nick Vamos, the CPS’s head of special crime, said:

“On 18 April we received a file of evidence from Kent police concerning allegations relating to Conservative party expenditure during the 2015 general election campaign.

“We then asked for additional inquiries to be made in advance of the 11 June statutory time limit, by when any charges needed to be authorised. Those inquiries have now been completed and we have considered the evidence in accordance with the code for crown prosecutors.

“We have concluded there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to authorise charges against three people. Craig Mackinlay, 50, Nathan Gray, 28, and Marion Little, 62, have each been charged with offences under the Representation of the People Act 1983 and are due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on 4 July 2017.”

Since criminal proceedings were active, Vamos added, it was important for people to not speculate or comment about the case, which could potentially prejudice it.

The charges follow allegations of overspending by some Conservative candidates and their agents at the 2015 election.

Last month, the CPS announced that no criminal charges would be brought against more than 20 Conservative MPs over the national party’s failure to accurately declare expenditure on a battlebus tour.

The CPS said their constituency spending declarations “may have been inaccurate”, but concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove dishonesty or bring a criminal case against the MPs and their agents.

At the time, the CPS said the one case outstanding related to Mackinlay and it would announce the decision soon. He was interviewed under caution by police in March over the allegations.

Mackinlay faces two counts of having knowingly contravened the 1983 Representation of People Act over election expenses. Gray faces three charges over the same law in relation to his role as Mackinlay’s agent. Little faces five charges, two connected to aiding and abetting Mackinlay in his alleged wrongdoing, and three connected to Gray.

The three could be tried at a crown court. The maximum sentence is one year in prison or a fine.

A Conservative party spokesman said:

“The legal authorities have previously cleared Conservative candidates who faced numerous politically motivated and unfounded complaints over the party’s national battlebus campaigning.

“We continue to believe that this remaining allegation is unfounded. Our candidate has made clear that there was no intention by him or his campaigners to engage in any inappropriate activity. We believe that they have done nothing wrong, and we are confident that this will be proven as the matter progresses.”

Warning that the media and others should beware of prejudicing the case, the Conservative statement added: “There is a broad consensus that election law is fragmented, confused and unclear, with two different sets of legislation and poor guidance from the Electoral Commission.

“Conservatives are committed to strengthening electoral law to tackle the real and proven cases of corruption that were exposed in Tower Hamlets in 2015.”

In response, Corbyn said: “Nobody should be commenting on the details of an ongoing case. The police must be allowed to act independently to investigate on the basis of any evidence they’ve got, and the Crown Prosecution Service must be allowed to make its decision on whether to proceed on a case.

“It is a very bad road when democratically elected politicians start offering a running commentary on independent judicial processes. We have to have total separation of political and judicial powers in this country.

“All politicians need to be extremely careful – politicians are elected to parliament to be held to account by the public.”

Voters in Ramsgate believed the CPS decision would have little effect on the outcome of the vote.

“You could put up an orangutan in this constituency and the Tories would still get in,” said Les Lewis, 63, a retired market trader and Labour voter.

“A few years ago this was the second or third poorest ward in the country and people still vote Tory, so don’t expect this will make a blind bit of difference.”

Others said they could see little alternative, choosing to see their ballot as support for the party as a whole rather than the local candidate. Asked about Mackinlay’s situation, Joyce Bright, 80, a retired NHS purchaser, said: “To be honest, what they say is quite good, but money doesn’t grow on trees and they think they can just magic money out of nowhere to pay for their policies.”

Meg Chater, a retired textile artist, said she felt deprived of a democratic right.

“I’m appalled,” she said in relation to the timing of the charges.

“I think we have been robbed of a candidate. He shouldn’t have stood and they shouldn’t have let him stand knowing this was hanging over him. I vote Conservative and now I feel I’ve been robbed of a candidate and have nobody to vote for.”

Leslie Sandles, a market trader, believed the CPS were right to charge even with six days to go before an election.

Asked about the matter during a campaign trip to the Clacton constituency, Farage said it was “bad judgment” from May to support Mackinlay.

“Why on earth would you allow someone to go ahead as general election candidate when this cloud was clearly hanging over him? There will be questions,” he said.

Syrian Army Encircles ISIS Last Stronghold in Aleppo*

Syrian Army Encircles ISIS Last Stronghold in Aleppo*

Syrian Army encircles Maskanah, the last ISIS held town in east Aleppo Province

[ Editor’s Note: Although this is good news, Southfront is reporting the main ISIS body had already retreated, leaving suicide squads to bleed the SAA down when it moves to take the city.  Foreign jihadis are usually chosen for this “dead ender” work.

It is strange that there has not been a word about the civilians in Maskanah, no bombing casualties reports, nothing…not even any refugees from the area during the battle. Where is the Syrian Observatory?

It looks like the Syrian Palestinian Liwa al-Quds force is supplying the manpower to move east from Khanasser. The real estimate of their strength is around 4.500, vs the PR earlier claims of 9000. They are probably split up into four 1000 man brigades, not counting support, as most of their people are shooters. One brigade might be tasked with pushing ISIS out of this area.

There is no word on where any escaping ISIS people from Maskanah are going to go, as they sure as hell can’t get to Raqqa, nor should they want to. And then why did the Russian/Syrian planes not bomb them when they were on the road retreating??? …unless they filtered out one car/truck at a time.

There surprisingly has been no reporting on the large oil field area south of Raqqa, a hugely important asset to control for Damascus, and the SAA needs to get it while the Kurds and U.S. friends are tied up in Raqqa. One of the reasons the SDF  has been offering ISIS free passes to get out is so the US Coalition can clear Raqqa quicker and then move south on the oilfields on the way  to “liberate” Deir-Ez-zor.

But with all that going on, we have credible reports that the U.S. and Russia have been in talks over making the SE Syria area a safe zone. We have a report today that the U.S. has reinforced its base that controls the Al-Tanf key crossing on the Baghdan-Damascus highway, which I cannot imagine Assad would agree to leaving it blocked as it is a strategic supply line. As always, the Syrian war is a moving target… Jim W. Dean ]

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), led by the Tiger Forces, liberated Deir al-Ghazal village north of Maskanah, and the villages of Aziza, Radda Saghira and Fakhikha south and south-east of the ISIS-held town. Thus, the SAA completely ecnricled ISIS terrorists inside Maskanah.

According to pro-government sources, a majority of the ISIS militants withdrew from the town last Monday and only a small group remained in the town to carry out suicide attacks against advancing government forces.

Separately, the SAA cut off the Maskanah-Tabqah road after the liberation of the villages of Duwayrinah, al-Balisiyah, Um Hajara, Murtada al-Qadima and al-Sharidah in south of Maskanah.

Furthermore, Liwa al-Quds units managed to advance east of the Khanasser road and captured the Alam hill. According to unconfirmed reports, Liwa al-Quds forces reached SAA positions in the eastern Aleppo countryside.

From its side, ISIS claimed that it managed to damage a BMP-1 and to destroy a vehicle belonging to the SAA with ATGMs in Al-Faisaliah village. The ISIS-linked news agency Amaq also published photos showing clashes between ISIS elements and the SAA in the vicinity of Maslma.

The Silver That Destroys 650 Different Pathogens and Heals Inflammation In 72 Hours*

The Silver That Destroys 650 Different Pathogens and Heals Inflammation In 72 Hours*

Colloidal silver is a liquid which has been used in the treatment of various ailments for centuries and is created using electrolysis to suspend pure, metallic elemental silver in distilled water.

Even though it is not commonly used by the conventional medicine, a goring number of studies suggest that it should have its own place in any natural living enthusiast’s medicine cabinet.

Colloidal silver offers numerous health benefits, but the following 15 are the most important:

  1. Fight Inflammation

Colloidal silver can be used topically to help the recovery, accelerate the healing process, and alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by inflammation and swelling.

The National Institutes of Health examined its effects on skin inflammation in pigs, and researchers found that the near recovery in pigs treated with colloidal silver occurred in 72 hours, while the skin of the other pigs was still inflamed.

  1. Fight Colds and Flu

Due to its powerful antimicrobial properties, colloidal silver reduces the length and severity of flu and cold symptoms. In most cases patients are prescribed decongestants, but the Italian Drug Agency states that their use by children younger than 12 is not safe.

Thus, a study tried to examine the effects of a colloidal silver and beta glucan mixture versus a saline solution on nasal congestion in children. It has been found that both groups of participants experienced an improvement, while 90% of the colloidal silver group recovered entirely, versus only 66% of the saline group.

  1. Anti-Everything

It is a great natural antibiotic, due to its powerful antimicrobial properties. Namely, it has been even used in the ancient Rome and Greece to preserve foods and drinks. It effectively kills bacteria, viruses, and fungal infections.

One research conducted in 2011 showed that colloidal silver nanoparticles are an efficient alternative to conventional antifungal treatments in the case of Candida-related conditions.

Another study conducted in Taiwan found that colloidal silver can eliminate the antibiotic resistant superbugs MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, in conjunction with antibiotics, it is extremely effective against MRSA and Staph infections.

To be more concrete, scientists in the 1980s found 650 different types of pathogens that were quickly killed as soon as they were exposed to small amounts of silver.

  1. Treat Ear Infections

Ear infections are often a result of bacteria, or even fungus, so prescription drugs fail to give results as they are made to work against specific classes of bacteria.

Yet, due to its powerful properties, colloidal silver successfully treats ear infections, even swimmers’ ear. You should just add a few drops to the ear 1-2 times during the day until the infection is completely treated.

  1. Ease Skin Conditions

Skin conditions can be painful, unpleasant, and embarrassing, such as pimples, psoriasis, red, inflamed skin, blackheads, cysts, and white heads.

They are often a result of fungi, viruses, and bacteria, so colloidal silver can offer great benefit as it will accelerate the repairing process of the damaged tissues. Every night, apply some silver colloids on the affected are and you will get the results in several days.

  1. Cure a Sore Throat

You should gargle with silver in order to eliminate the pathogens in your throat which are the reason for the pain you are experiencing.

Take 2 tablespoons of it and gargle for a couple of minutes. Spit it out in order to get rid of the microbes in the mouth. Repeat this 5 times during the day until you feel the relief.

You can also use it as a throat spray, and use it several times during the day.

  1. Treat Sinus Infections

Sinus issues, like a blocked nose and sinusitis, when you constantly feel unbearable pain and pressure in the face, significantly worsen the everyday life. The conventional therapy includes steroids, painkillers, and antibiotics, but their use lead to numerous side-effects.  Therefore, you should use natural remedies.

A study published in the International Forum for Allergy and Rhinology in 2014 suggests the use of colloidal silver as a nasal spray. You should tilt the head back, and pour several drops into the nasal cavity. You can also use a neti pot.

  1. Cure Eye Infections

Due to the powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, colloidal silver can soothe and treat eye infections, such as sties, pink eye, and conjunctivitis. You should pour 2-3 drops in the eye three of 4 times a day. Moreover, you can use it as a gentle spray around the eyes, or as an eyewash.

  1. Relieve Cuts, Burns, and Scrapes

Colloidal silver promotes the healing process of the skin and tissues, and at the same time, alleviates inflammation, so it is perfect for the treatment of minor cuts and scrapes.

  1. Treat Pneumonia

Dr. Axe suggests that the ability of antibiotics to fight bronchitis or pneumonia is limited. Therefore, in the case of viral pneumonia, antibiotics just cannot provide positive effects.

As it kills numerous pathogens, colloidal silver effectively treats pneumonia. It can be ingested internally or breathed into the lungs with a nebulizer. According to Dr. Axe, teaspoon three times a day for 10-15 minutes can treat pneumonia in a few days!

  1. Great for animals

Colloidal silver is not effective just in the case of humans. Namely, it is excellent in the case of animals as well. It can be used to treat minor cuts, infections, wounds, ringworm, ear infections, in dogs. It is advisable that you give your dog 5 to 10 drops orally, twice a day.

When used topically for wounds, pour some colloidal silver on a cotton swab and apply it on the affected area several times daily.

In the case of an ear infection, pour a few drops in its ear daily for up to ten days. You should apply one drop, 3 times during the day, in the case of an eye infection.

In the case of cats, colloidal silver can be used to treat feline issues, such as feline acne, MRSA, skin issues, tear stains, and yeast infections.

  1. Eliminate Pet Odors

Colloidal silver can effectively remove all unpleasant pet odors in the house, and leave a fresh smell. You should douse the area where your pet leaves a bad odor or marks the territory with a colloidal silver solution, and you will remove the smell, and at the same time, your pet will stop marking the place again.

Moreover, in a bottle, mix some distilled water and colloidal silver and mist the fabric of your sofas or pet beds, and you will get rid of the bad general pet smell.

  1. A Natural Fruit and Veggie Wash

If you cannot grow your own, organic vegetables and fruits, you should find a way to remove all the chemicals found on the ones you buy. Therefore, prepare your homemade colloidal silver fruit and vegetable wash.

Mix half cup of vinegar and one cup of water, stir well and add 2teaspoons of salt. Leave it to dissolve and stir in ¼ cup of colloidal silver.

Soak your fresh fruits and vegetables in this mix for 5 minutes and rinse them. In this way, you will consume clean products, which do not contain chemicals that can harm your health.

  1. Excellent for Gardeners

Colloidal silver can also treat plant fungus and other infections which harm your crops and flowers.

According to one study, published in the journal Mycobiology, in 2010, the application of silver nanoparticles to the roots of green onion plants completely eradicated certain types of fungal infections which destroyed the plants.

You should add colloidal silver to the plant’s the base, or dilute it with distilled water, pour it in a spray bottle, and apply to the affected parts of the plant.

  1. Preserve Your Flowers Fresh

Add some colloidal silver to the vase of your flowers, and you will have fantastic blooms all over your home.

Namely, scientists from the Department of Horticulture at Ferdowsi University of Mash, in 2014, discovered that silver particles obstructed the activity of bacteria which blocked the transport of nutrients and moisture to the flower head.

Therefore, the addition of colloidal silver at 35ppm to the water caused the flowers to remain healthy and in a perfect condition and with a fresh color for twice as long as the flowers that were kept in water alone.

Hacked Emails Show Top UAE Diplomat Coordinating With Pro-Israel Think Tank Against Iran*

A picture taken in downtown Dubai on May 31, 2017, shows Burj Khalifa and the Dubai skyline.

By Zaid Jilani, Ryan Grim

The email account of one of Washington’s most connected and influential foreign operatives has been hacked. A small tranche of those emails was sent this week to media outlets, including The Intercept, HuffPost and The Daily Beast, with the hacker promising to release a trove publicly.

The hotmail account belongs to the UAE’s Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al-Otaiba, and The Intercept can confirm it is the one he used for most Washington business. HuffPost confirmed at least one of the emails as authentic and the UAE has confirmed that Otaiba’s account was indeed hacked.

Otaiba’s influence derives largely from his pocketbook, as theambassador is well known for throwing lavish dinner parties, galas and hosting powerful figures on extravagant trips. Several Christmases ago, he sent out iPads as gifts to journalists and other Washington power players as gifts. There’s no telling what kind of messages might reside in that inbox.

The hackers used a .ru email address, associated with Russia, and referred to themselves as GlobalLeaks, tying themselves to DCLeaks, a website that previously released Democratic emails. The intelligence community has said DCLeaks is a Russian-operated website, which means that the Otaiba hackers are either connected with Russia or trying to give the impression that they are.

Russia and the Gulf monarchies, client states of the United States, are longtime rivals, backing opposing sides in Syria and clashing for decades over Iran, a Russian client state and a Gulf enemy.

The emails provided so far to the Intercept show a growing relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the pro-Israel, neoconservative think tank the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).

On the surface, the alliance should be surprising, as the UAE does not even recognize Israel. But the two countries have worked together in the past against their common adversary, Iran.

On March 10 of this year, FDD CEO Mark Dubowitz authored an e-mail to both the UAE’s Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al-Otaiba and FDD senior counselor John Hannah — a former deputy national security advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney — with the subject line “Target list of companies investing in Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia.”

“Dear, Mr. Ambassador,” Dubowitz wrote. “The attached memorandum details companies listed by country which are doing business with Iran and also have business with the UAE and Saudi Arabia. This is a target list for putting these companies to a choice, as we have discussed.”

Dubowitz’s attached memorandum includes a lengthy list of “Non-U.S. businesses with operations in Saudi Arabia or UAE that are looking to invest in Iran.”

The list includes a number of major international firms, including France’s Airbus and Russia’s Lukoil.

Presumably, the companies are being identified so that the UAE and Saudi Arabia can pressure them over investing in Iran, which is seeing an expansion of foreign investment following the 2015 nuclear deal.

Israel and the Gulf monarchies have grown closer in recent years, as both sides fear that Iran is moving closer to normalization with the West and will therefore increase its own influence and power in the region. But admissions of the alliance between the two are still rare in public. One high-level Israeli official, discussing the relationship on background for a previousHuffPost profile of Otaiba, laid out the politics of it.

“Israel and the Arabs standing together is the ultimate ace in the hole. Because it takes it out of the politics and the ideology. When Israel and the Arab states are standing together, it’s powerful,” he said.

The hacked emails demonstrate a remarkable level of backchannel cooperation between a leading neoconservative think tank — FDD is funded by pro-Israel billionaire Sheldon Adelson, an ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is one of the largest political donors in the United States  — and a Gulf monarchy.

Hannah and Otaiba are frequently chummy in the exchanges. On August 16 of last year, Hannah sent Otaiba an article claiming that the UAE and FDD were both responsible for the brief military coup in Turkey. “Honored that we’re in your company,” Hannah wrote to Otaiba.

In another email exchange in late April of this year, Hannah complains to Otaiba that Qatar — a rival Gulf government that has clashed with the UAE in recent months over various issues — is hosting a meeting of Hamas at an Emirati-owned hotel. Otaiba responds that it’s not the Emirati government’s fault, and that the real issue is the U.S. military base in Qatar, “How’s this, you move the base then we’ll move the  hotel :-).”

The emails detail the proposed agenda of an upcoming meeting between FDD and UAE government officials that is scheduled for June 11-14. Dubowitz and Hannah are listed as attending, as well as Jonathan Schanzer, FDD Vice President for Research. UAE officials requested for meetings include Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince who commands the armed forces.

The agenda includes extensive discussion between the two on Qatar. They are scheduled to discuss, for instance, “Al Jazeera as an instrument of regional instability.” (Al Jazeera is based in Qatar.)

There is also “discussion of possible U.S./UAE policies to positively impact Iranian internal situation”; included among the list of policies are “political, economic, military, intelligence, and cyber tools,” which are also brought up as a possible response to “contain and defeat Iranian aggression.”

FDD has been involved in shaping Mideast policy debate during the Trump administration, so it is likely that the UAE views it as an important conduit to pressure Trump to adopt its more hawkish line on Iran. David Weinberg, a senior fellow at the organization, was quoted last month as saying that the UAE is “ecstatic” about the Trump administration’s approach to the region.

“They have been looking for some time for an American partner to push-back against Iran,” he told “They are looking for America to turn rhetoric into action.”

Otaiba has also developed a close relationship with President Trump son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner. The two first met last June at the behest of Thomas Barrack, a billionaire investor and Trump backer. A Politico article last February described Kushner as “in almost constant phone and email contact” with the ambassador.

Whatever the UAE’s agenda, it isn’t promoting democracy. From the previous profile:

As protests spread in Egypt, Otaiba pushed the White House hard to support Mubarak, without success. After the Muslim Brotherhood came to power in a democratic election, he filled the inbox of Phil Gordon, the White House’s top Middle East adviser, with missives savaging the Brotherhood and its backers in Qatar. (Gordon declined to comment.) “He’d robo-email people,” says the former White House aide. “You can be sure when Yousef has something to say on a topic like that, high-level people throughout the State Department and in the White House are going to hear it, in very similar if not identical emails.”

We’re now getting a sense of what those emails looked like. In an email sent on July 3, 2013, shortly after the Egyptian military deposed elected Muslim Brotherhood-backed president Mohamed Morsi, Otaiba lobbied former Bush administration officials Stephen Hadley — now a consultant at RiceHadleyGates — and Joshua Bolten on his view on Egypt and the wider Arab Spring.

“Countries like Jordan and UAE are the ‘last men standing’ in the moderate camp. The arab spring has increased extremism at the expense of moderation and tolerance,” he lamented.

He described Morsi’s overthrow in glowing tones. “Today’s situation in Egypt is a second revolution. There more people on the streets today than January of 2011. This is not a coup, this is revolution 2.0. A coup is when the military imposes its will on people by force. Today, the military is RESPONDING to people’s wishes.”

Egypt today is a virtual dictatorship. And a close ally of both the U.S. and the UAE.

Putin Exposes U.S. Presidents Are Not Ruling Washington*

From Alexandra Bruce

This week, Russia is hosting the St. Petersburg Economic Form, in which local leaders, like Indian
Prime Minister Narendra Modi are showing up to discuss their deal for a new nuclear energy plant, etc. and Putin took the opportunity to share his views about U.S. politics:

“I have already spoken to three U.S. Presidents. They come and go but [U.S.] politics stay the same. Do you know why? Because of the powerful bureaucracy. When a person is elected, they may have some ideas. Then people with briefcases arrive, well-dressed, wearing dark suits, just like mine, except for the red tie, since they wear black or dark blue ones.
“These people start explaining how things are done. And instantly, everything changes. This is what happens with every administration.
“Changing things is not easy, and I say this without any irony. It is not that someone does not want to, but because it is a hard thing to do.
“Take Obama, a forward-thinking man, a Liberal, a Democrat. Did he not pledge to shut down Guantánamo before his election? But did he do it? No, he did not. And may I ask why not? Did he I am sure he did, but it did not work out. He sincerely wanted to do it, but did not succeed, since it turned out to be very complicated.
“This is not the main issue, however, even though it is important, since it is hard to fathom that people have been walking there, in chains for decades without trial or investigation.
“Can you imagine France or Russia acting this way? This would have been a disaster. But it is possible in the United States and continues to this day.
“I referred to this example just to show that it is not as simple as it may seem.
“That said, I am cautiously optimistic, and I think that we can and should be able to reach agreements on key issues.”
