Teen Pregnancy Rate Falls 42.6 percent after U.K. Cuts Sex-ed, Birth-control Funding*

By Fr. Mark Hodges

A new study indicates that teen pregnancy rates drop when liberal sex-ed funding is cut, the U.K.’s Catholic Herald reported.

The Effect of Spending Cuts on Teen Pregnancy” analyzed data in England before and after contraceptive-based sex-ed expenditures were slashed — cuts that were criticized by liberals and praised by Christians

Researchers David Paton of Nottingham University Business School and Liam Wright of the School of Health and Related Research at the University of Sheffield led the study, published in The Journal of Health Economics.

England has been forced to make severe cuts in recent years to its budget, including tax funds for sex-ed in schools and free birth control.

The study sought to “examine the impact of reductions in local expenditure on one particular public health target: reducing rates of teen pregnancy.”

The Paton and Wright research team used statistics from 149 municipalities between 2009 and 2014 and found that after sex-ed budgets were cut, teen pregnancy rates fell by 42.6%.

The researchers discovered that taking away tax funding for contraceptive-focused sex education in schools actually reduced teen pregnancy.

“Contrary to predictions made at the time of the cuts, panel data estimates provide no evidence that areas which reduced expenditure the most have experienced relative increases in teenage pregnancy rates. Rather, expenditure cuts are associated with small reductions in teen pregnancy rates,” they noted.

With the government cuts in sex-ed funding, teen pregnancies in England have fallen to their lowest level since 1969, according to the new study. In fact, the statistics show teen pregnancy rates diminished the most in those areas where secular sex-ed budgets were most aggressively cut.

Paton and Wright suggest their data should be followed up with research into why cutting sex-ed leads to lowering teen pregnancy rates. They speculate,

“Underlying socio-economic factors such as education outcomes and alcohol consumption are found to be significant predictors of teen pregnancy.”

Liberals have claimed for decades that unwanted pregnancies would be reduced if the government funded more “safe-sex” instruction in public schools and paid for contraception distributed to teenage girls. But by 1999, after three decades of sex-ed, England attained one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Europe.

Paton and Wright’s research shows those government programs actually increase teen pregnancies, and in turn increase abortions for teen single mothers.

“Spending on projects relating to teenage pregnancy may even be counterproductive,” the study concluded.

“Birth control will reduce the risk of pregnancy for sex acts which would have occurred anyway but may increase the risk among teenagers who are induced by easier access to birth control either to start having sex or to have sex more frequently.”

Another study conducted in 2009 by the Teenage Pregnancy Unit came to similar conclusions. In 2016, the Cochrane review published findings that government “safe-sex” education had “no apparent effect” in reducing teen pregnancies.

Britain’s Office for National Statistics reports that teenage girls’ birth rates have fallen by 8.7% in the past year alone.

Scott Phelps of the Abstinence and Marriage Education Partnership told LifeSiteNews that to pro-life and pro-family advocates the study’s conclusions come as no surprise.

“Sex-education programs serve to normalize teen sexual activity for unmarried teens and young adults,” the pro-marriage champion said. “At the same time, these programs fail to even present the option of abstinence until marriage as an option. As a result, these programs actually increase teens risk of non-marital pregnancy as seen recently here in the U.S.”

Phelps told LifeSiteNews that he has seen it before.

“Specifically, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest received a $4 million grant from the Obama administration for sex education,” he continued.

“According to a report released by the Obama administration itself, females in the program reported becoming pregnant at a higher rate than females receiving the alternative program.”

“So after $4 million of taxpayer funding, teen pregnancy increased among teens who received the government’s contraception-based sex education program,” Phelps concluded.

Some conservatives suggest that liberal government sex-ed in schools even increases human trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors, and abuse.

Family Education Trust Director Norman Wells warned,

“The evidence from recent serious case reviews clearly demonstrates that fundamental flaws in professional attitudes towards underage sexual activity have directly contributed to exploitation and abuse.”

Nevertheless, England made contraceptive-based sex-ed compulsory throughout the nation’s public high schools in its “Children and Social Work Act” of 2017.

Phelps’ Abstinence and Marriage Education Partnership exists “to ensure that every U.S. teenager has the opportunity to hear a clearly reasoned, positive presentation on the benefits of abstinence until marriage.” The group also provides instruction on preparing for a healthy future marriage.

During a two-year reign in Mosul, Iraq, ISIS jihadists destroyed dozens of buildings — including the Monastery of Mar Georges, a Christian church. After a siege in November resulted in the city being reclaimed, local residents got to work rebuilding the city.

When rumours were spread that Christian families were still being attacked within the city, a group of Young Muslims decided to rebuild the church so their neighbours in Mosul would have a safe place to worship. According to the This Is Christian Iraq Facebook page, their efforts resulted in the successful reconstruction of the house of worship.

The post reads,

“Young Muslim volunteers from that neighbourhood headed to the Monastery of Mar Georges to clean it up and repair it and to show that ‘Mosul is yours as it’s ours’ and ‘our differences are our strength.”

The Child Porn-Pentagon-NSA-CIA Link*

The Child Porn-Pentagon-NSA-CIA Link*

Even though there is evidence, the Pentagon, the NSA, and the CIA do not want to investigate and prosecute their highly-disciplined, high-profile, and high-ranking child pornographers. Here’s why..

Some of the top ranking defense personnel, intelligence analysts, and federal law enforcement officers in the United States are paedophiles who access and download child pornography on their work and home computers.

They not only compromise the nation’s security and drive the country into greater humiliation and disgrace; they put themselves at risk of blackmail, bribery, and threats by using credit cards or PayPal to pay for access to overseas pornography websites. Yet, these high-profile paedophiles are neither prosecuted by the United States Department of Defense investigators nor exposed by the mainstream media.

Child Porn in the Pentagon

In 2006, an undercover Internet child pornography investigation, called Operation Flicker, was conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal investigative agency. ICE revealed a list of 5,200 Pentagon employees (with high-level security clearances) suspected of subscribing to child pornography websites, and asked the Pentagon to investigate its employees.

In 2010, The Boston Globe disclosed the link between the Pentagon and child pornography to the public, reporting how the eight-month Pentagon investigation intentionally left 1,700 of its own men off the hook.

According to the heavily edited Pentagon’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service documents (DCIS) obtained by The Boston Globe, the Pentagon only cross-checked 3,500 out of 5,200 paedophiles (many provided military zip codes in their addresses when purchasing child pornography online); identified only 302 defense personnel and intelligence employees as connected to the child pornography scandal; investigated only 70 cases; prosecuted a handful and dropped many perverts due to a lack of evidence.

Later, the Operative Flicker documents obtained by The Upshot revealed that the DCIS investigators had in fact identified only 264 Pentagon employees who had purchased child pornography online. John Cook, an investigative journalist who currently serves as the executive editor of Gawker Media, penned:

“Astonishingly, nine of those had “Top Secret Sensitive Compartmentalized Information” security clearances, meaning they had access to the nation’s most sensitive secrets. All told, 76 of the individuals had Secret or higher clearances. But DCIS investigated only 52 of the suspects, and just 10 were ever charged with viewing or purchasing child pornography.”

Even though the ICE investigators warned the child pornography purchasers put the Department of Defense, the military and national security at risk by compromising computer systems and military installations, and security clearance; even though a contractor who had top security clearance at the National Security Agency, a top-ranking official at national reconnaissance office in Virginia, which operates the U.S. military’s spy satellites; and a contractor at a weapons-testing base in California were implicated; and even though a Pentagon spokesman promised to reopen the investigation abruptly halted six years ago due to lack of resources; there are no answers to why the 1,700 suspects were never investigated.

Child Porn in the NSA & the CIA

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is infamous for conducting Domestic and Global Mass Surveillance to secretly snoop on users’ online communications, which NSA chiefs claim is necessary to foil terror plots post 9/11.

Remember the top-secret NSA document dated October 3, 2012, (leaked by former CIA employee Edward Snowden, in 2013)? It sought to track ‘radicalized’ users’ sexual activity and evidence of visits to pornographic websites in order to discredit and blackmail Muslim activists.

If you’ve got nothing to hide, why worry about warrantless mass surveillance? Well, because America’s Surveillance State is creepier than you could ever imagine.

The fact is NSA and CIA employees watch a lot of child pornography at work. Intelligence analysts and terrorism experts at the NSA and the CIA are paid to watch child pornography and graphic videos 24×7. So much that they even have a special porn room where agents look for the hidden clues in porn videos “to gain clues about the actions of Islamic State and Al-Qaeda terrorists in order to track them down, rescue hostages, or stop terrorist attacks on countries.”

However, not everyone enjoying child pornography at NSA is doing so in the name of national security. In 2014, Snowden revealed documents to show the ugly face of the NSA agents who captured nude images from webcam chats of nearly 1.8 million unsuspecting Yahoo users and stored the sensitive data in government servers in 2008. Even as it shamelessly violated Yahoo users’ privacy, the NSA declined to respond.

In 2016, two senior U.S. intelligence officials admitted that an “unbelievable” amount of child pornography has been found on the NSA work computers and devices. Even though there is evidence in the past that military and intelligence personnel have sexually abused minors online for years, the NSA does not want to investigate and prosecute its highly disciplined child pornographers. Kemp Ensor, the NSA’s director of security, remarked:

“In the national security space, what people do is amazing… There are many introverts staring at computer screens day in and day out.”

Like the Pentagon’s DCIS, the Central Intelligence Agency has an Office of Inspector General (OIG) empowered to investigate CIA personnel accused of criminal wrongdoings. And like the Pentagon, the CIA ensures the details of its OIG investigations are shrouded in secrecy.

However, in 2015, the OIG was forced to reveal several heavily redacted documents about high-profile investigations into serious allegations of misconduct by the CIA employees including child pornography, torture and war crimes under a Freedom of Information Act request from VICE News. But, reports VICE News:

“About 80 pages of internal CIA documents pertaining to more than a dozen OIG investigations show that CIA employees escaped charges after the cases were referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ), which declined to prosecute the alleged offenses.”

It is evident that there are some extremely disturbing and depraved things taking place at the highest levels of the NSA as well as the CIA; and it is also evident that there is more to their ‘official activities’ online and offline that they don’t want discussed.

It is a matter of grave concern that child pornography investigations within the U.S. intelligence agencies are either dropped or kept under wraps and away from the eyes of the public due to pressure from within the system.

But who benefits from the uninvestigated and unprosecuted child pornography cases?

And who is threatened if those involved are investigated and prosecuted?

Are internal probes an eyewash?

Should independent agencies investigate child pornography allegations?

Judy Malware Infects Over 30 Million Android Users Worldwide*

Judy Malware Infects Over 30 Million Android Users Worldwide*

An application masked as an adware infected over thirty million Android devices

More than thirty million Android users might be infected with an adware that has been on Google’s Play Store for many years.

Again, thanks to security experts at Check Point they were able to discover the malware, naming it Judy. The malware was discovered in more than forty applications that were all linked to a single Korean company named ENISTUDIO.

Image Source: Check Point – A malicious Judy app on Google Play

Even though Google has removed the infected applications from its store, the damage already done casts no doubt on the efficacy of the adware it spread through the application and by bypassing Google Play’s security screening system, Bouncer.

According to the report published by Check Point, for an infected application to bypass Bouncer protection, the application creates a bridge between a server and the device it was installed on – like many applications out there – which is why it remained undetected for so many years.

Image Source: Check Point – Searching for iframes containing Google ads.

Once the application is downloaded from Google Play Store it pings the server and registers the target. From there the command and control server replies to the application with the malicious code that is made up of JavaScript, along with different variables and strings and URL’s that are all controlled by the server.

The malicious code then fills the device with advertisements, many of them are click-adverts, meaning they interact with the spam advertisements to get back to their home screen, and these click-advertisements then make the hackers their money.

Image Source: Check Point – Comments made by suspicious users

Be aware, it is not only the Korean company that is making these applications. Reports from a more recent discovery show that there are other developers following the same trend; more than forty-five applications were discovered on Play Store using the same two-step tactic. Users are fooled into downloading the applications and then once done, the server would send the payload of malicious code to the user’s phone.

It is applications like Judy that highlight a very important message for users: always check the information on applications before downloading them. Good ratings do help to know if the application is safe. There were others saying that these applications had tremendous advertisements that Judy was generating.

This is just one example discovered. In time, security researchers will develop different tricks to see how hackers fool us. We recommend using a paid anti-virus service for your smart device and keeping it up to date with all the latest security updates.

For Centuries European Aristocrats Proudly Claimed Foreign Ancestry*

For Centuries European Aristocrats Proudly Claimed Foreign Ancestry*

Aeneas and his Father Fleeing Troy by Simon Vouet c 1635. San Diego Museum of Art/Wikipedia

Modern nationalism valorises a people’s deep, primordial relationship with land. It also depends on enemies, outsiders and foreigners to help unite the members of the nation. These claims do not have to be historically accurate to be politically powerful. Far-right Hindu nationalists in India today, for example, claim that the Taj Mahal, a symbol of the Muslim sultans of the Mughal dynasty, was originally a Hindu temple. Defying historical fact, such claims portray Indian nationalist movements as guardians of native heritage while denying Indian Muslims any ties to the nation’s past glories.

For much of Western history, however, claiming foreign ancestry was the key to political legitimacy. From the Roman Empire to the Renaissance, noble families across Europe insisted that they were not related to the populations they ruled. They traced their ancestry back to illustrious foreign powers, including figures of myth and legend. Among the most popular were the protagonists of the Trojan War. Europeans were familiar with the exploits of Greek heroes such as Ajax and Achilles as recorded in the Iliad. Roman emperors, Germanic warlords and crusading nobles, however, identified themselves not with the Greek victors of the war, but with the defeated Trojans. While European nationalists today see migrants of Middle Eastern wars as an existential threat to their homelands, Europe’s Roman and medieval elites boasted of their Trojan ancestors, refugees fleeing the ruins of their Asian home.

The most famous of these refugees was Aeneas, a legendary prince of Troy. Barely mentioned in the Iliad, he became a key figure of Roman myth in the first century BCE. Romans imagined that the Trojan prince had escaped his city as it was sacked by the Greeks. Aeneas resettled in Italy, conquered the local people and became the forefather of Romulus, founder of Rome. The Roman Republic was by then master of the Mediterranean world, and the story of Aeneas offered justification for its conquests. By conquering the Italian peninsula, it could be argued, Rome had finished Aeneas’ mission. By humbling the Greek city-states and Hellenistic kingdoms of the eastern Mediterranean, Rome had avenged Troy’s fall. The Romans were an intensely patriotic people, but rather than imagine themselves as sons of the Italian soil, they preferred to think that they were born to move, fight and reign across the world.

The legend of Aeneas was such a powerful ideological tool that the ambitious general and politician Julius Caesar (100-44 BCE) and his adopted son Augustus (63-14 BCE) made it their own, creating a genealogy to prove their direct descent from Aeneas. The poet Virgil immortalised their claims in the Aeneid, an epic poem about Aeneas’ journey from Troy to Rome (written in 29-19 BCE). Caesar and Augustus transformed the Roman Republic into an empire ruled by a single dynasty. They smoothed the transition by conflating Rome’s Trojan heritage with their own family tree. Foreign origins served to differentiate the imperial household from the Roman masses, and to legitimise a cosmopolitan empire.

The imperial myth of Aeneas would outlive the empire. In the turbulent third, fourth and fifth centuries CE, groups of Germanic warriors wrested much of western Europe from Roman control. Besides seizing territory, Germanic elites also appropriated the symbols of Roman authority, including the myth of Trojan origins. The Merovingians, rulers of the Frankish tribes who had seized what is now France, stole a page from Virgil’s book in the seventh-century Chronicle of Fredegar. This text traced the history of the Franks back to Francio, a clone of Aeneas who supposedly settled on the Rhine. When the Carolingians, a rival Frankish dynasty, deposed the Merovingians, these newcomers sought to prove that they were even more Trojan than the kings they had overthrown. In chronicles and poems, the propagandists of the Carolingian court celebrated its rulers as descendants of Aeneas, asserting their connections to the most celebrated Trojan exile.

The other dynasties of western Europe forged their own stories of Trojan ancestry, eager not to let the Franks keep the symbolic heritage of Troy and Rome to themselves. After their conquest of England in 1066, the Normans, originally of Viking origin, invented the Trojan hero Brutus, who was said to have fled Troy at the same time that Francio and Aeneas were setting out for the Rhine and the Tiber. In Germany, rival dynasties seeking control of the Holy Roman Empire claimed that they, too, were the offspring of a Trojan refugee. Mythical genealogies offered a basis for elites across Europe to emphasise their superiority over common people. Heirs to Troy, and by extension to the Roman Empire, they had a right to rule inherited from the heroes of classical antiquity.

Like the Romans, medieval Europeans used their purported connections to Troy as a rationale for conquest. In 1204, relatives of the French royal family diverted what was supposed to be a crusade in Syria and Palestine towards a new target: Constantinople. The capital of the Greek-speaking Byzantine Empire, it was the largest and wealthiest city in Europe. The crusaders sacked it, slaughtering thousands of fellow Christians. To justify their actions, French leaders of the crusade claimed that they were taking their revenge against the Greeks for the fall of their ancient Trojan homeland. Instead of fighting Muslims in the Holy Land, they refought the Trojan War.

For nearly 1,500 years, ties to ancient Troy offered Europe’s leaders justification for autocratic rule at home and military adventures abroad. But, by the early modern era, Europe was beginning to forget its Trojan roots. The rise of the Ottoman Turks, who conquered Constantinople in 1453 and menaced Europe for the next 300 years, seems to have dampened European rulers’ enthusiasm for being identified with Asia Minor. Meanwhile, historians of Europe’s emerging nation-states debunked legends about Trojan immigrants settling Britain, Germany and France. They sought to learn more about the long-forgotten ancient peoples of the continent, like the pre-Roman Celts.

By the end of the 18th century, as the age of democratic revolutions began, European aristocrats would have reason to regret their conspicuous identification with foreigners. Leading figures of the French Revolution denounced the nobility as descendants of barbarian invaders, and identified the common people as the true heirs of the Celts. Today, the Celts or ‘Gaulois’ are still key figures in French national consciousness, inspiring the comic-book hero Asterix. Trojans – and aristocrats who claimed descent from them – are nowhere to be seen.

In recent years, many scholars have highlighted the longstanding historical connections between Europe and Asia, or Europe and Islam, as a response to nationalist movements across Europe that see immigrants as a threat to local cultures. By challenging accounts of history that pit virtuous natives against dangerous outsiders, such historians promote more inclusive understandings of identity and more open immigration policies. But, from the long view of European history, nationalist myths about indigenous peoples are a recent invention, a response to elites’ emphasis on their foreign origins. Roman and medieval rulers’ cosmopolitan identities were no guarantee of tolerant or peaceful policies.

Scholars who try to resist the rising tide of nationalism in Europe and throughout the world by pointing to the rich connections between cultures of the past should be on guard against undue optimism; for centuries, identification with immigrants from Asia Minor was an ironic but effective tool of imperial power.

Palestinian Prisoners end Hunger Strike with Historic win against Israeli Mass Incarceration*

Palestinian Prisoners end Hunger Strike with Historic win against Israeli Mass Incarceration*

By Joyce Chediac

Some 1,300 Palestinian prisoners ended their “Freedom and Dignity” hunger strike May 28 after winning key demands in a historic victory against Israeli mass incarceration.

The strike was ended after 20 hours of intense negotiations between the strike’s leaders, including imprisoned Fatah figure Marwan Barghouti, and the Israel Prison Service, according to the prisoners’ solidarity committee.

The committee hailed the agreement as a “victory for the Palestinian people and the prisoners in their epic defense of freedom and dignity.” It added that Israel was forced to negotiate after realizing that the prisoners “were ready to continue until victory or martyrdom and that the use of oppression, violence and other violations failed to weaken them, but rather strengthened their resolve.”

The prisoners had survived on only salt water from 17 April until the evening of 28 May to demand improvements in conditions and an end to solitary confinement and heavy restrictions on family visits and an end to administrative detention – arbitrary and imprisonment without charge. The hunger strike was waged throughout the Israeli prison system by a united front of all Palestinian resistance groups incarcerated in Israeli jails.

The hunger strikers were boosted by strong support from Palestinian communities worldwide, and from prominent individuals and grass roots groups internationally who took up their cause internationally.

Despite the important win, the health of the hunger strikers is still a concern. Many prisoners who went without food are now hospitalized, in a weakened condition and deteriorated health. Vigilance is needed to ensure that they receive appropriate medical treatment

Strike called ‘a turning point’

Marwan Barghouthi, the imprisoned Fatah leader who led the hunger strike, called it “the longest collective strike” and “a historic epic in the prisoners’ movement’s record over 50 years.” The win, he said, was a “turning point” in the Palestinian prisoners’ relationship with Israeli prison officials.

Gains won by the strikers, Barghouthi said, included “restor[ing]e the second monthly visit to the families of the prisoners, which was stopped almost one year ago, a]ddressing problems ongoing for years related to the conditions of daily life, including the conditions of women prisoners, child prisoners, ill prisoners,” and the “formation of a committee of senior officials of the Prison Service for continued dialogue with the prisoners’ representatives.”

Barghouthi warned Israeli authorities that prisoners would resume their strike if Israel doesn’t follow through on its commitments.

Israeli repression could not break strikers

In an attempt to break the strike prisoners were held in solitary confinement and special repressive units, subjected to round-the-clock raids and inspections, transferred under harsh and brutal conditions, had all personal belongings, including underwear, confiscated, and were deprived of all sanitary and hygiene materials. Yet Israeli repression could not break the prisoners’ will or their solidarity with each other.

Ahmad Sa’adat, General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who participated in the strike from Ramon Prison where he has been jailed for 10 years, said that the victory, “reaffirm[s] the fact that rights can only be taken and never begged for, and that the resistance was the main lever for all of the achievements of the Palestinian people in the successive eras of the revolution.”

Palestinian support and worldwide solidarity: factors in the victory

A factor in the prisoners’ victory was the overwhelming support the united front hunger strike received from Palestinian people everywhere. This included a general strike on their behalf on May 22, the 36th day of hunger strike, which rocked the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip.

On that day, which also coincided with Donald Trump’s visit to the area, hundreds of protesters blocked roads in cities and towns in the West Bank. Stores and government offices and public transportation closed down, and central areas deserted.

International solidarity also played a role in the victory.

Prominent individuals and political prisoners from around the world made statements in solidarity with the Palestinian strikers. This included Rene Gonzales of the Cuban 5, who spent 15 years in a U.S. jail, Oscar Lopez, Rivera. a Puerto Rican patriot just released after 36 years behind bars in the U.S., South African prisoners of Apartheid formerly held on Robben Island, Irish Republican, and Filipino political prisoners.

Supporters demonstrated in solidarity with the prisoners on every continent. To raise awareness, many posted on social media pictures of themselves taking the “salt water challenge” — drinking only salty water, as the hunger strikers did.

Syria Opens Its First Solar-Powered Hospital*

I am always amazed by developments made by countries less well off than the U.S., but Syria while it is being destroyed just shows what humanity can do for humankind

If there is a complete fuel outage, the solar system can power the hospital for up to 24 hours without diesel

By Heba Kanso

After months of testing, a hospital in Syria will have uninterrupted power last week, charged by solar power in a project designers hope will save lives and can be repeated across the country.

Syria’s electrical grid has taken a big hit after six years of a volatile civil war with most the electrical infrastructure bombed, dismantled or destroyed, leaving hospitals relying on diesel generators but at the mercy of fuel shortages.

So the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), an international coalition of international medical organizations and NGOs, said it hoped creating the country’s first solar-power hospital would save lives.

“To have those active (hospitals) resilient and operational, it’s a matter of life (or death) for many, many people in the country,” said Tarek Makdissi, project director of UOSSM told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone.

The France-based UOSSM launched the initiative, “Syria Solar,” with the aim of getting hospitals less dependent on diesel which the organization says is expensive and not reliable. The first solar hospital—the name and location of which the UOSSM would not release for safety reasons—runs on mixture of a diesel generator and 480 solar panels built near the hospital that link to an energy storage system.

If there is a complete fuel outage, the solar system can fully power the intensive care unit, operating rooms and emergency departments for up to 24 hours without diesel, which is 20 to 30 percent of the hospital’s energy cost.

Makdissi said the goal is to get five other medical facilities in Syria running like this by the end of spring 2018 with funding from places like institutions, foundations, government agencies and philanthropists.
