Frosts Increase with Solar Minimum: Thus it begins*

Frosts Increase with Solar Minimum: Thus it begins*

By David Archibald

Back in late April, European wine growers were hit by the most damaging frost since 1991. That frost affected vines as far south as Tuscany. More recently it is the western Corn Belt that has been affected by late Spring frost. The following two figures show damage to crops from frosts a few days ago:

Figure 1: Chickpea crop in Saskatchewan just north of the Montana border, 27th June 2017 (image source Mike Foley, yellow is frost-killed dead plant material)

Figure 2: Frozen corn just east of McLaughlin, South Dakota, 27th June, 2017 (image source Joel Bierman)

Figure 3: South Dakota Spring frost incidence 1974 – 2003

As Figure 3 shows, the majority of frosts for McLaughlin are usually over by mid-May.

Figure 4: U.S. Drought Monitor

Warmer is wetter and colder is drier. In a cooling climate there will be a concommitant reduction in moisture available.

Figure 5: Spring Wheat Futures

The reaction of the wheat market has been a 50% increase in price over two weeks. That has geopolitical implications, as shown by the following graphs.

Figure 6: Percentage of personal budget spent on food

This is a graphic made in 2010 using data from 2009. At 6.9%, the United States has the lowest percentage of disposable income spent on food of any major country and will be hardly affected. But most countries spend between a quarter and half their income on food. A rise in the budget allocation to food, driven by the prices of wheat and other grains, will result in a reduction in economic activity.

Figure 7: Imported grain and domestic grain production in the Middle East

The Middle East lost the ability to feed itself from its own production decades ago. Even countries as large as Egypt live a hand-to-mouth existence. Egypt recently sold off a couple of islands in the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia in return for Saudi funding of the Egyptian budget, and thus grain imports. On average, humans get about 48% of their calories from grains. Wheat, with the best amino acid profile of the major grain crops, is a near-complete foodstuff for those not allergic to it. Tunisia has wheat consumption of 80% of their calorific intake… The wheat price rise has geopolitical implications.

Figure 8: F10.7 flux 2014 – 2017

Where to from here?

Relative to the climate of the last century, an F10.7 flux above 100 causes warming and below that level causes cooling. As of today, the F10.7 flux is 71, not far above the activity floor of 64. Solar minimum is three years away and then we are likely to have at least two years of activity below 100 as activity rises into Solar Cycle 25. Thus some of the heat that built up in the second half of the 20th century due to the highest solar activity in 8,000 years will have a chance to radiate into space. Late spring frosts will become more frequent.

This Over-the-counter Painkiller Kills Empathy*

This Over-the-counter Painkiller Kills Empathy*

Dr Jeremy Dean

Every week almost one-quarter of Americans use this drug.

Acetaminophen — commonly known as Tylenol in the U.S. and paracetamol elsewhere — reduces people’s empathy for the pain of others, new research finds.

Acetaminophen is an ingredient in over 600 different medications, including being the main constituent of Tylenol.

The ubiquitous painkiller does not just kill pain, it also kills our fellow-feeling.

Dr Dominik Mischkowski, the study’s first author, said:

“These findings suggest other people’s pain doesn’t seem as big of a deal to you when you’ve taken acetaminophen.

Acetaminophen can reduce empathy as well as serve as a painkiller.”

Previous research has also found that the drug can reduce the positive emotions of those taking it.

Dr Baldwin Way, a study co-author, said:

“We don’t know why acetaminophen is having these effects, but it is concerning.

Empathy is important.

If you are having an argument with your spouse and you just took acetaminophen, this research suggests you might be less understanding of what you did to hurt your spouse’s feelings.

The research was carried out on 80 college students.

Half were given a dose of 1,000mg of acetaminophen and the other half a placebo.

They then read a series of stories about people who had been hurt and were asked to rate their pain.

The results showed that those who had taken the acetaminophen consistently gave lower pain ratings for the people in the story.

The researchers carried out a couple of other variations to test people’s’ empathy for physical and social pain.

Dr Way explained the results of the experiment on social pain:

“In this case, the participants had the chance to empathize with the suffering of someone who they thought was going through a socially painful experience.

Still, those who took acetaminophen showed a reduction in empathy.

They weren’t as concerned about the rejected person’s hurt feelings.”

The researchers are now moving on to ibuprofen to see if the findings are the same.

Psychiatrists’ Torture of Patients Lawsuit to Proceed*

While acknowledgement of the abuse and financial compensation may provide some comfort to the victims, short of consistent criminal prosecution of those responsible for the abusive psychiatric practices, history is condemned to repeat itself.

By CCHR International

Judge approves case proceeding saying psych methods were “torture and degradation of human dignity.”

Former residents of an Ontario, Canada, psychiatric facility have been given the green light to proceed with a class action civil suit against two psychiatrists who, for years, carried out torturous treatment programs. Given the nature of the torturous “treatment” residents were subjected to, one can only wonder why the named psychiatrists are not being held criminally responsible for the acknowledged abuses.

Two psychiatrists, Dr. Elliott Thompson Barker and Dr. Gary Maier, of the Oak Ridge division of the Penetang Psychiatric Hospital in Penetanguishene, Ont., are accused of carrying out “treatment” programs on patients that presiding Justice Paul Perell described as “an inexcusable breach of fiduciary duty for a physician to torture a patient.”

The class action lawsuit includes 31 plaintiffs who were a part of the programs run at Oak Ridge between 1966 and 1983.

The three abusive programs under scrutiny, developed by Dr. Barker and implemented by Drs. Barker and Maier at Oak Ridge include:

  • Defense Disruptive Therapy (DDT) involved forcibly giving patients hallucinogenic and delirium-producing drugs in order to break down the patients’ defense mechanisms and force them to confront their abnormal behavior.

  • The Motivation, Attitude, Participation Program (MAPP) involved forcing patients to complete 14 days of perfect behavior, including adhering to rules about “unauthorized talking or movement.” One component of this program involved forcing patients to sit on a bare floor with hands cuffed; only allowing them to move four times within four hours in a confined space of three square feet. (Failure to comply could result in forced sedation or being placed in solitary confinement.)

  • Capsule Program involved chaining up to seven people together in a room, stripping them naked, and keeping them in that state for days at a time. Adding to the misery, the room was continuously lit and featured holes in the walls through which occupants were fed only liquid foods through straws.  Patients were kept under constant surveillance and often given hallucinogenic drugs against their will.

Patients at Oak Ridge were subjected to forced administration of drugs, physical restraint and sleep deprivation

.

Patients at Oak Ridge were subjected to forced administration of drugs (sodium amytal, a drug best known as a sort of “truth serum”, the stimulant methedrine, LSD and scopolamine, a drug with similar properties to sodium amytal), physical restraint and sleep deprivation.

Justice Perell explained that “the three programs designed by Dr. Barker and implemented by the doctors and other employees of Oak Ridge—even if designed and implemented in good faith and even if the programs could be proven to be in some way therapeutic—were torture and a degradation of human dignity.”

Justice Perell is allowing the case to move forward, providing plaintiffs the opportunity to show harm caused by virtue of having been subjected to Dr. Barker and Maier’s programs. However, while Perell’s determination that the programs amounted to torture, the case remains strictly a civil suit, despite torture being prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada, albeit only relating to government officials committing the offense. Clearly in light of this current civil action, the law should be extended to psychiatrists administering torturous treatments.

History Shows Torturous Abuses Carried Out by Psychiatrists under Guise of “Treatment” Seldom Prosecuted

History, however, is replete with examples of torturous, even deadly, abuses carried out by psychiatrists under the guise of “treatment” that too often go un-prosecuted. In the case of Oak Ridge, Drs. Barker and Maier carried out torturous programs under the guise of rehabilitation of those accused of criminal acts. Historically, though, with no science to support even one psychiatric diagnosis, human rights abuses have repeatedly occurred in order to meet a specific objective on a specific group.

For example, psychiatrists played a central and prominent role in the abuses that occurred in Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945 with the killing of 200,000 mentally unfit which, ultimately, morphed into the “final solution,” the mass extinction of much of Europe’s Jewish population. The proof of psychiatry’s role in the holocaust is so pervasive that in 2010 (70 years after the killing spree) Dr. Frank Schneider, President of the German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGPPN), addressed a convention of psychiatrists about psychiatry’s role in the Third Reich.

In what amounted to an apology for psychiatry’s role in the Holocaust, Schneider admitted that

“Under National Socialism, psychiatrists showed contempt towards the patients in their care; they lied to them, and deceived them and their families.” Schneider further said,

“Patients were used as test subjects for unjustifiable research—research that left them traumatized or even dead,” and “for too long” the DGPPN “have been hiding, denying a crucial part of our past. For that we are truly ashamed.” “I must,” said Schneider,

“offer our sincerest apologies—albeit shamefully late—to all the victims and their families who suffered such injustice and pain at the hands of the German associations and their psychiatrists.”

The abuse by psychiatrists did not end there. In the early 1970’s the former Soviet Union was exposed for its psychiatric human rights abuses of political dissenters, as is the case in China’s recent abuses against the Falun Gong.

Even patients in the United States are not immune from abuse and human rights violations at the hands of the psychiatric establishment, as evidenced by recently reported abuses among several psychiatric facilities, including those facilities owned by United Health Services (UHS), where patient suicides, restraint deaths, falsified records, and sexual assault of patients are just some of the alleged abuses occurring at the facilities.

Among some of the more egregious accusations of abuse involve the UHS Rock River Academy in Cook County, Illinois, where one girl alleged staff “intentionally administered psychotropic drugs which they used to keep her in a semi-conscious state so that she could be more easily manipulated and sexually abused.” A lawsuit on behalf of five plaintiffs was filed in September 2015 with the Cook County Court.

While acknowledgement of the abuse and financial compensation may provide some comfort to the victims, short of consistent criminal prosecution of those responsible for the abusive psychiatric practices, history is condemned to repeat itself. The tortuous psychiatric practices at yet another psychiatric facility, Oak Ridge, provide ample proof.

Pope Francis Names Jesuit as Vatican Doctrine Chief*

Archbishop Luis Ladaria Ferrer

Pope Francis has named a Jesuit, Archbishop Luis Ladaria Ferrer, to replace Cardinal Gerhard Müller as Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF).

Ladaria Ferrer, 73, was previously Secretary of the CDF.

Müller, 69, defended Catholic orthodoxy throughout his five years as CDF Prefect.

The appointment is coming at the end of Müller’s five-year term, however prefects have generally had their terms extended until normal retirement age at 75.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger served as prefect from 1981-2005, leaving the post at age 78 when he was elected Pope Benedict XVI.

The head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was at one time second in power only to the Pope.

Cardinal Muller has been steadfast in his opposition to the liberal interpretation of Amoris Laetitia favored by Pope Francis.

In terms of vocal conservatives in the hierarchy of the Vatican only Cardinal Robert Sarah remains. Cardinal Burke was removed by Pope Francis and demoted to patron of the Order of Malta. Australian Cardinal George Pell, as reported this week, is now off to his home country to defend himself against media-hyped charges of sexual abuse.

Cardinal Muller, according to sources, seems set to take over as the Patron of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, replacing Cardinal Edwin O’Brien who at 78 is three years past retirement age.

‘Terrorists, Thugs’ Must Be Eradicated in West Africa: Macron*

‘Terrorists, Thugs’ Must Be Eradicated in West Africa: Macron*

The terrorism that France takes a personal interest in is the fight for independence against the FrancAfrique grip on African countries whose resources finance the failing state of France = colonialism

On Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron, in his second visit to Mali since taking office in May, met with his counterpart, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, at a security summit in Bamako. While speaking at the event Macron noted that he had come to the region to garner support to “wipe out Islamist militants in the volatile Sahel region.”

“Every day we must combat terrorists, thugs, murderers (…) who we must steadfastly and with determination eradicate together,” Macron said.

Reuters reported that the meeting was attended by leaders of the G5 Sahel, (Mali, Burkina Faso, Muritania, Niger and Chad) all of whom are expected to launch a new multi-national force aimed at combating al-Qaida, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups in the immense arid region.

Responding to French newspaper Le Monde, French Foreign Minister, Yves Le Drian, stated, “this force is first going to secure the borders, particularly in the areas where terrorist groups have developed.”

He explained that accompanying the new G5 military detail would be a priority for Operation Barkhane – France’s ongoing Chad-based anti-jihad mission for the region.

The joint initiative, which would entail the deployment of 5,000 regional troops, has been fervently supported by Macron. While the E.U. has agreed to contribute roughly US$57 million to the military force, Macron has sought additional support from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States.

In 2013, some 5,100 French troops led Operation Serval to oust Islamic militants from the north of Mali.

However, France’s historic, colonial role in the West African region, have been criticized as undermining stability and sovereignty of countries in the region.

When Sekou Toure, the first President of Guinea, rallied against colonial rule in 1958, the French counterattacked by “taking all their property and destroying anything that which could not be moved: schools, nurseries, public administration buildings were crumbled; cars, books, medicine, research institute instruments, tractors were crushed and sabotaged; horses, cows in the farms were killed, and food in warehouses were burned or poisoned.”

France has also been accused of orchestrating violent coups against Sylvanus Olympio (Togo), David Dacko (Central African Republic), Maurice Yameogo (Republic of Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso), Hubert Mago (Benin).

Also, in 2015, an investigative magistrate from a military tribunal began an official probe into the 1987 assassination of former Burkina Faso President, Thomas Sankara. The judge, according to Quartz, has requested that France declassify military files on Sankara’s killing to determine whether France “played a role” in the assassination. The request, to date, has gone ignored.

According to Serge Michailof, a researcher at the Paris-based IRIS Institute, scoffed at the E.U.’s promise of financial support for a new military force in the Sahel. Considering the 28 member states’ “deep pockets,” he said the US$57 million dollar budget is a “joke.”

“This force is going to cost $300-400 million (262-350 million euros) at the very least,” he told AFP.

Court Rules Baby Must Die, Even Though Parents Can Pay Out of Pocket*

Over 83,000 people have contributed £1.3 million in an effort to save a 10-month-old boy who has been sentenced to “die with dignity” by his government.

By Rachel Blevins

When the parents of 10-month-old Charlie Gard raised more than £1.3 million in an attempt to save their critically ill son, they had no idea that the European Court of Human Rights would be the only thing standing in the way of pursuing further treatment.

Gard suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic condition that has caused serious brain damage. After British doctors determined that he was beyond saving and should die with dignity,” Gard’s parents appealed to both the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court and the ECHR in France, and received the same answer.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates set up a GoFundMe account for their son, in which they explained that because Charlie is the 16th person in the world to have ever been diagnosed with the condition, they have found an experimental treatment that is only available in the United States.

“Charlies condition is caused by a disruption in the mitochondria, the part of the cell that provides energy to his muscles, kidneys and brain. There is a new treatment available which is a nucleoside bypass therapy, which could potentially repair Charlie’s mtDNA and help it synthase again by giving him the naturally occurring compounds that his body isn’t able to produce. It’s oral medication so nothing invasive or harmful. We are running out of precious time with our baby, he can’t have this treatment in the U.K. so our only hope now is to get Charlie to America.

Despite the fact that Charlie Gard’s parents succeeded in raising more than the £1.3 million they were seeking, in an attempt to pay out of pocket for their son to receive treatment in the U.S., the U.K.’s healthcare system left the ultimate decision up to the government.

The European Court of Human Rights released a statement that not only rejected the appeal to let Gard’s parents seek out additional treatment independent of state-funded healthcare, but also stated that it is lawful for Gard’s doctors to take him off of life support when they choose.

The decision is final,” The statement said.

“The domestic courts concluded that it would be lawful for the hospital to withdraw life sustaining treatment because it was likely that Charlie would suffer significant harm if his present suffering was prolonged without any realistic prospect of improvement, and the experimental therapy would be of no effective benefit.”

During the U.K. Supreme Court hearing, Gard family lawyer Richard Gordon QC raised the question of the level of involvement the government should have in determining a child’s right to live, as well as the rights of parents to seek alternative treatment that could save their child.

The issue is whether the state has the power to intrude on decisions the parents have made in order to mandate that child’s death before it might come to an end,” Gordon said.

“These are model parents trying to do all they possibly can for the benefit of their child. Their view on what is best for Charlie differs from the court.”

The fact that the final decision comes at the hands of a court under the name of “Human Rights,” serves as a reminder that government involvement is never the answer, and in this case, it is in opposition to over 83,000 people who have pledged in support of a giving a baby boy the opportunity to have a second chance.
