The agrihood is located in Detroit, Michigan, and feeds thousands of families in the area. Children and adults can learn about sustainable agriculture when they take part in the food forest’s development.

Have you ever contemplated the fact that humans are the only species on Earth that pays to live on the planet? This continues, despite the fact that there is presently more than enough resources to care for every citizen.

As a matter of fact, enough food is produced around the world to feed 10 billion people. However, because 70% of the mono crops which are grown are  feed livestock intended for slaughter, a distribution problem exists. In effect, 795 million people go to bed hungry each evening.

Solving the conundrum of world hunger has been many peoples’ dream. Hopefully, it will be remedied within the next century or two. Perhaps one of the ways inspired activists will make this ambition a reality is to install more community gardens which can offer nutrient-dense food to local civilians for free!

If it sounds too good to be true, look no further than what has developed in Michigan. Inhabitat reports that in the city of Detroit – which is recognized as a location where many families are affected by economic imbalance, America’s first urban ‘Agrihood’ exists and it feeds approximately 2,000 households.

The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) is responsible for implementing the three-acre project. Two acres of the land is devoted to growing crops, such as fruits and vegetables, and the remaining one acre allows for a fruit orchard with 200 trees. Additionally, a sensory garden has been constructed for kids to experience and learn more about sustainable agriculture.

MUFI explains its project as an alternative neighbourhood growth model which centres around urban agriculture. Co-founder and president of the non-profit, Tyson Gersh, explained in a statement:

“Over the last four years, we’ve grown from an urban garden that provides fresh produce for our residents to a diverse, agricultural campus that has helped sustain the neighbourhood, attracted new residents and area investment.”

Volunteers are essential for MUFI to flourish. Reportedly, plans are in the works to construct a 3,200 square-foot Community Resource Center at the agrihood. The building will serve as a colorful headquarters and education center. Nearby, a health food cafe will also be built, and it will likely utilize crops grown in the urban food forest.

Every individual and family deserve to have abundant access to nutrient-dense, life-saving foods.

Your Body is Incapable of making Hormones without Cholesterol*

Your Body is Incapable of making Hormones without Cholesterol*

By Michael McEvoy

Each week I re-iterate the importance of cholesterol in the body, as well as site the prevalent mis-information that exists regarding cholesterol.

Not only is cholesterol not bad, it is one of the most vitally important substances inside of your body. Every cell of your body is made from it, and ALL of your steroid hormones are synthesized from cholesterol, including all of the sex and adrenal hormones!

How Are Steroidal Hormones Made?

There are basically 6 types of steroid hormones: mineralcorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, progestagens and Vitamin D. The three steroidal hormones that are produced by the adrenals are:

  • Mineralcorticoids
  • Glucocorticoids
  • Androgens

It is the family of 50 powerful enzymes known as Cytochrome P450 that is responsible for converting cholesterol into the ‘master’ steroid hormone, pregnenolone. I choose to call pregnenolone a ‘master hormone’ because it is converted into numerous other vital hormones.

Without cholesterol which in synthesized in the liver, pregnenolone cannot be made. Drugs that inhibit the liver’s production of cholesterol may have a very damaging effect upon the cascade of hormones of the endocrine system.

Consider the vitally important functions of the 6 steroidal hormones, all of which are derived from cholesterol:

  • Glucocorticoids are vitally important for the metabolism of carbohydrates. The most important glucocorticoid is cortisol, a powerful adrenal hormone that has multiple functions in the body. Cortisol is also a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone that opposes immune hyper-function.
  • Mineralcorticoide hormones such as aldosterone are hugely responsible for water/electrolyte dynamics through the control of sodium and potassium.
  • Adrogenic hormones such as DHEA and testosterone are critical for libido, as well as maintaining bone density. Studies have shown that low levels of DHEA correlate with poor bone density and osteoporosis. DHEA is also critical for memory and anti-aging,
  • Progestagens such as progesterone are vitally important for regulating women’s menstrual cycles and are the ‘gestation’ hormones.
  • Estrogens such as estradiol are critical for sexual development and have various functions for bone and brain health.
  • Vitamin D is technically a sterol, but functions as a steroidal hormone. Vitamin D is converted in the liver and has hundreds of vital immune supporting functions. Vitamin D is also critical for calcium regulation in the blood.

Cholesterol Lowering Drug Side Effects: Diminished Hormone Function

So many side effects of cholesterol lowering drugs are caused due to their inhibition of proper hormone synthesis from cholesterol. The most common side effects of statin drugs are: loss of physical strength, sexual dysfunction, memory loss, liver dysfunction, changes in mood, myopathy and several other symptoms.

By understanding the basic functions of the 6 steroid hormones I’ve discussed above, and the vitally important role that cholesterol has on the production of those hormones, can you see how and why cholesterol is so important to your body’s overall health?

‘Good’ & ‘Bad’ Cholesterol: No Such Thing

There is no such thing as good and bad cholesterol. These terms are fictitious. In fact LDL the so called ‘bad’ cholesterol and HDL the so called ‘good’ cholesterol are not even cholesterol, they are lipo-proteins, transports for cholesterol. How important is LDL, the so called ‘Bad’ Cholesterol?

Consider that your body is incapable of functioning without LDL particles. Calling LDL ‘bad’ is extremely misleading and tends to induce a sense of irrational fear. It is true that LDL particles can oxidize in the bloodstream and can irritate blood vessels. But many things oxidize in the body, including omega 3 fats, which oxidize at an incredible speed. The essential sulfur rich amino acid methionine can oxidize and cause an elevation of homocysteine, a major indicator for cardiovascular inflammation. Yet you wouldn’t stop the body from synthesizing L-methionine because of elevated homocysteine. The body needs methionine in a major way, especially for liver detoxification. The same logic should apply to LDL.

The real question should be: “what is causing LDL to oxidize?” When there is a high level of oxidation present in the body, there also tends to be free radical activity in the tissues. Consuming adequate amounts of antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E prevents oxidative free radical damage.

Consuming artificial, partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats) will not only cause LDL to oxidize, so will a diet high in refined sugars, alcohol and smoking cigarettes. Elevated levels of LDL also may be caused by chemical and heavy metal toxicity, liver toxicity and stress, hypothyroidism and kidney failure. Calling LDL ‘bad’ is very misleading, especially if you are not identifying causation.

HDL the so called ‘good’ cholesterol is the lipo-protein which transports cholesterol from the bloodstream back to the liver. Low levels of HDL reflect a sedentary lifestyle. Doctors and others who push the misinformation about raising HDL as being a good thing, fail to address that HDL levels greater than 75 are actually correlative with autoimmune processes. This is a strong possibility especially if triglyceride levels are low (less than 40). Excess consumption of alcohol, drug use, hypothyroidism, and excess estrogen can also cause HDL levels to become too high.

Diet & Cholesterol

Consider that dietary sources of fat and cholesterol have little to do with your blood cholesterol levels. I have literally seen how eating a high protein, high fat, high cholesterol diet actually LOWERS blood cholesterol levels in many people. Many medical studies, including this one actually show that eating cholesterol-rich eggs have a cholesterol-reducing effect!

Depending on the biochemical individuality of each person, dietary sources of fat and cholesterol may have some to little effect on blood cholesterol levels. There are many other variables to consider as to why cholesterol levels elevate. Over consuming sugar and carbohydrates is often a reason why many people have elevated cholesterol.

Hormones & Toxicity

Other factors such as toxicity, mercury poisoning and fluoride toxicity all contribute to hormone disruption in the body. Mercury particularly can interfere with the conversion of progesterone into cortisol. When there is a cascade of hormonal imbalances, you can almost say with certainty that heavy metal toxicity is a major causative factor. And when the symphony of hormones gets augmented, there are multiple responses and reactions that can ensue. The increased production of cholesterol is one. But realize that the elevation of cholesterol is a response to underlying biochemical imbalances, not a cause of it.

Adrenal fatigue is a very common condition that is characterized by a decline and deregulation of cortisol and DHEA levels. I have seen that people in deep stages of adrenal fatigue can have total cholesterol levels in the 300-400 range. These people also had extensive metals toxicity, liver toxicity and a cascade of other hormone imbalances. The metals toxicities should be seen as causative since heavy metals can interfere with all biological processes, especially hormones.

Improving upon adrenal function through proper nutritional intervention helps to restore the viability of the hormone pathways, and indirectly may cause cholesterol levels to lower as well. Again, elevation and lowering of cholesterol levels in the blood is a response to other biochemical factors, not a cause.

Hypothyroidism and elevated cholesterol is a common tandem. Again, when there is disruption to the hormone pathways, any number of problems can erupt in the body. Consider that hypothyroidism is just another symptom and result of the cascade of biochemical imbalances in the body.

Oregon Plans to Douse Azure Standard Organic Farm in Pesticide*

Oregon Plans to Douse Azure Standard Organic Farm in Pesticide*

By Daisy Luther

If you buy organic products, chances are you have heard of Azure Standard, which is sort of like a mobile co-op that delivers well-priced organic food and products in bulk to drop-off points around the country.

Now that idyllic 2000-acre organic farm, which has produced reasonably priced organic wheat, field peas, barley, Einkorn, and beef for thousands of people across the country, is about to be sprayed against their will with Roundup and other harmful pesticides, due to a ruling from their local municipality about invasive plants.

Oregon state law requires farms to control noxious weeds. In this case, the weed in question is the Canadian Thistle. Sherman County appears to be concerned that Azure has not taken enough steps to eradicate the weed and decided they’ll do it themselves, to the detriment of Azure’s long-standing, 18-year organic certification and their livelihood as organic farmers.

Just in case you were under the misconception that we actually own our land and can decide what happens to it in this country, it appears that we’re tenant farmers with no options if the local government decides to wipe us out:

“Sherman County may be issuing a Court Order on May 22, 2017, to quarantine Azure Farms and possibly to spray the whole farm with poisonous herbicides, contaminating them with Milestone, Escort and Roundup herbicides.

This will destroy all the efforts Azure Farms has made for years to produce the very cleanest and healthiest food humanly possible. About 2,000 organic acres would be impacted; that is about 1.5 times the size of the city center of Philadelphia that is about to be sprayed with noxious, toxic, polluting herbicides.

The county would then put a lien on the farm to pay for the expense of the labour and chemicals used.” (source)

So not only will they poison the crops and kill off Azure’s livelihood, they’ll charge them for it. That’s a brazen insult on top of the injury.

Here’s how you can help Azure Standard.

There is just under a week before this would occur. Here’s what WE can all do.

If you are concerned about where your food comes from, enjoy Organic and non-GMO food grown in the United States, and support organic farmers, contact Sherman County Court before May 22, 2017 (and preferably before May 17 when the next court discussion will be held).

Contact info:

  1. Via email at lhernandez@co.sherman.or.us or…
  2. Call Lauren at 541-565-3416.

Raise your voice and speak up for you and your families and communities.

This proposed action is completely unreasonable and would destroy an organic farm and pollute a massive area. If enough voices that benefit from organic produce speak up, the county will understand that there are people that care about their food NOT containing toxic chemicals. And if the supporters of healthy food can have a louder voice than the supporters of toxic chemicals, every politician will listen. PLEASE take action today and share this message. Overwhelm the Sherman County representatives with your voice. (source)

I’ve already sent my email and will be making a call later today. Get on board and do the same. And share this article with everyone you know so that we can make our voices heard.

Update: Here are the email addresses of the entire county commission. Please be civil when you contact them, as swearing, threatening, and being rude means your message is lost to the delete bin.

Sign the petition.

There is a petition you can sign that will be sent to the people in charge of this act of sabotage. Go here – it only takes a moment to sign it.

It’s bad enough that everything in the grocery store is already tainted. Actions like this take away our choice to avoid toxic pesticides and poisons in our food. We should have the right to buy organic, but if local governments take away the right to grow organic, we’ll have nothing left to eat than the standard fare.

If we stand by and do nothing but shake our heads sadly, we’ll soon be stuck without dietary options.

Pesticide Residues Detected in Almost all European Foods*

Pesticide Residues Detected in Almost all European Foods*

By Marine Jobert

More than 97% of European food products contain pesticide residues, according to analyses carried out by the E.U.’s national authorities. EURACTIV’s partner Journal de l’Environnement reports.

The European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) annual compilation of results from studies across the E.U. on the presence of pesticides in food products held no surprises. Of the 84,341 samples of produce from conventional agriculture analysed, 97.2% contained traces of one or more of 774 pesticides.

Very limited values

53.3% of the samples tested in 2015 were “free of quantifiable residues” – which does not mean they were pesticide-free – while 43.9% contained residues “not exceeding legal limits”. Meanwhile, 99.3% of organic food was free from residues or within legal limits.

To meet E.U. standards, the residues of any pesticide present in a product must not exceed two times the legal limit. But these values are highly contested, particularly for endocrine disruptors, which can be active at very low concentrations.

Bananas, the multi-residue champions

In 2015, the analysts’ shopping basket included bananas, aubergines, broccoli, virgin olive oil, orange juice, peas, peppers, raisins, wheat, butter and eggs. While some samples of each product were found to contain residues of multiple pesticides, the results for bananas (58.4%) and raisins (58.3%) were the most striking, followed by peppers (24.4%).

Unauthorised pesticides

Three quarters of the sample batch came from E.U. countries (plus Norway and Iceland), with the other quarter coming from unspecified third countries. These imports pose the greatest risk to consumers, with 5.6% found to contain pesticide residues above the E.U. limits. Among E.U.-sourced produce, 1.7% of samples were over the legal limits. One third of all the pesticides detected are illegal in the European Union.

Hello there!

Today we have a very exciting episode for you, the last major episode focusing on the foods that we eat which keep us from living life in the fullest! It’s crazy to think that Dairy, in addition to meat, is linked with so many diseases, but alas… It is so.

In this episode, Patchman is going to break down for you some of the biggest health concerns spiraling around Dairy! There are actually a few more that we didn’t mention, so if you’re interested in checking these out, give the following a google!

Cheese and other dairy foods that are high in saturated fat cause high cholesterol and leads to heart attack and stroke.

There are a tremendous amount of dead white-blood-cells in Dairy which are often just described as Pus Cells, there’s actually quite a lot, though the dairy industry puts out news saying it’s not so bad.

How to Get Arsenic Out of Your Rice*

How to Get Arsenic Out of Your Rice*

By Heather Callaghan

When you think of the heavy metal arsenic, does it make you think of an old Cary Grant movie or a 48 Hours Mystery?

Or perhaps more recently – making an unfortunate appearance in gluten-free diets everywhere. That’s because arsenic is in our environment and gets soaked up into rice like a straw as it is grown in flooded fields.

Arsenic can build up in the body – mostly undetected – until late stage poisoning symptoms finally manifest as hair loss, confusion, cancer, renal failure, liver disease, hyperpigmentation, edema, convulsions, vomiting, diarrhoea, trouble swallowing, muscle cramps, blood in urine, profuse sweating and saliva, saliva that tastes metallic, and breath that smells like garlic.

Be aware that this typically happens from large doses in the body such as through well water, pesticide exposure or an intentional poisoning. Yet, arsenic is very toxic – in the European Union, arsenic is classified as a category 1 carcinogen.

The FDA even warns that inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal should never go above 100 parts per billion (PPB). Foods with the highest levels of arsenic include chicken and rice – a menu staple in many countries.

In chicken, the arsenic comes from the antibiotics in chicken feed and can be avoided – but arsenic is pretty snug within the rice itself.

Recently, we showed you how to make tons of fluffy rice with a slow cooker – but it looks like we’ll have to insert a caveat, because there are some important rules you need to know about rice and its arsenic content.

BBC aired an episode of Trust Me, I’m a Doctor that dealt with this very issue.

Here is what Prof Andy Meharg from Queen’s University, Belfast, knows about some shocking stats about levels of arsenic in rice (Source):

  • Basmati rice contains lower levels than other rice.
  • Brown rice usually contains more arsenic than white rice (because of the husk).
  • Growing rice organically doesn’t make a difference to levels.
  • Rice cakes and crackers can contain levels higher than in cooked rice.
  • The levels of arsenic found in rice milk far exceed the amounts that would be allowed in drinking water.

Here are some percentages of arsenic in rice:

Good News – You Can Get Arsenic Out of Your Rice

The following tips are counterintuitive, but could reduce the arsenic levels from now on:

  1. Soak your rice overnight – this opens up the grain and allows the arsenic to escape
  2. Drain the rice and rinse thoroughly with fresh water
  3. For every part rice add five parts water and cook until the rice is tender – do not allow it to boil dry.
  4. Drain the rice and rinse again with hot water to get rid of the last of the cooking water.
  5. Now serve your reduced-arsenic rice.

Allegedly, only 43% of the arsenic remains in the rice after using this method. If soaked overnight before cooking, only 18% of the arsenic remains.

I haven’t tried this method, so I’m wondering if it would be very watery tasting. Perhaps placing the rice back in the sauce pan or slow cooker would help boil off the remaining moisture.

Water savers beware – the drained arsenic water should not be used for any other purpose – especially not in the garden!

This is yet another reason to eat organic produce – wastewater and sewage that go down the drain are eventually repurposed on conventional crops, probably continuing the lifecycle of arsenic.
