Genetically Modified Bread Given Green Light by Vatican*

Genetically Modified Bread Given Green Light by Vatican*

By Julian Rose

In what will surely to be considered a highly controversial statement, Vatican cardinal Robert Sarah, has stated that Catholic priests can use genetically modified bread during the Eucharist – but not ‘gluten-free’ bread.

In an article in the Guardian online Sarah is quoted as saying that guidance was needed now that Eucharist bread can be found in supermarkets and even over the internet.

Sarah had earlier reminded bishops that the bread should be made by people “distinguished by their integrity.” He also stated

“It is altogether forbidden to use wine of doubtful authenticity or provenance.”

The wine he is referring to is that taken with the bread during holy communion, which, quoting the Guardian

“Catholics believe turns bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.”

Somehow or other, in giving the OK to the use of GM unleavened bread, this statement encapsulates everything which is antithetical to basic, informed wisdom – never mind spiritual guidance. To deliberately distort the composition of the genetic code of life, is to go against the principle of reverence for the species. Doubly so since this is only undertaken to increase the profits of the corporations that patent the engineered plants.

The cardinal then states that such bread should only be made by  people “distinguished by their integrity.” Well, well, clearly the Vatican has a whole other concept of what ‘integrity’ means, than I do, and indeed millions of others. The article is capped-off by the statement citing Catholics’ belief that the bread and the wine issued to the congregation during communion, symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus.

Even to take this in a non-literal sense, raises severe questions about the origins of this ritual. Nobody needs to imbibe the blood and body of Christ, even symbolically, in order to gain support from divine sources. Rather the opposite, to believe it is necessary to engage in a ritualistic form of cannibalism (however disguised) in order to receive divine blessing, places a block on the ability to see the sacred in everything. Rather it encourages a return to the dark ages of sacrificial worship.

I do not wish to cause offense to Catholics, especially those who follow their conscience, but the church has made it plain for all to see, that it is following a whole other doctrine than the one which supports nurturing an increase in spiritual awareness. We are witnessing a false dogma laid bare; and, in a sense, we should thank Sarah for so brazenly exposing this fact.

For the sake of brevity, I am going to resist going into every hypocritical nuance which the Vatican proclamation raises. Others have covered in depth, the prevalence of dark guidance which flows through this institution. But one cannot help but feel a shiver of horror when one links together the hundreds of cases of priestly paedophilia, the sacrilegious ingestion of symbolic body and blood and the promotion of GMO.

There is much more, but these three are quite sufficient in alerting all of us that it’s time to stand back and see the bigger picture.

A great swathe of the world’s activities are run from the Vatican, in its link-up with Washington DC and The City of London. None of which are government or citizen controlled. They are tax-free  ‘corporations’, boasting their own private police forces and independent status from the rest of society.

Here is where the hierarchical sudo-elite devise their ‘new world order’ ambitions. Their plans to take control over all aspects of planetary life. They work closely with the international banking cabal and with heads of state. They comprise the top end of the 0.2% pyramid elite whose ethos is to dominate within the construct of a totalitarian world, in which all those ‘below’ act as their minions.

There are many good and thoughtful individuals who follow the teachings of the church. Likewise there are priests performing valuable supportive efforts to those under repression all over the planet.

This is not a criticism of these individuals. It is the institution which must be first to answer for its deviousness. All the evidence exposing institutional corruption is contained in cardinal Sarah’s proclamation that genetically engineered bread is acceptable – and gluten-free bread is not.

Throughout the world 70 to 80% of individuals are against the use of GMO in the food chain. They perceive, in spite of mega bucks worth of corporate attempts to sell the GM message, that this laboratory inspired experiment is a dangerous and crass distortion of nature, with historical links to Nazi programmes promoting genocide. They also deeply distrust the agrichemical corporations trying to market it.

Who is right: the church and the corporations or the people?

It’s time to leave the dogma behind us and move on. A rise in human consciousness is not going to be achieved via regression into religious fanaticism. Humanity needs to break-free from all forms of institutional repression, and take inspiration directly from the true source of divine wisdom

Avoid Kellogg’s Products Like The Plague*

Avoid Kellogg’s Products Like The Plague*

By Christina Sarich

There is a good reason that Kellogg’s spent over $1,012,552 on media propaganda in California & Washington to defeat voter ballot initiatives that would have required the labeling of GMO foods, and now are contributing again to the defeat of labeling initiatives in Oregon (contributing $250,000).

A consumer recently sent a box of Froot Loops to a lab for genetic testing and found that the corn and soy used in the cereal are 100% RoundUp Ready GMO. So is the sugar. Never mind the other toxic ingredients in the cereal. This means that in one box of Kellogg’s cereal (and likely all their cereals contain similar GMO products), you are dining on a double dose of glyphosate and Bt toxins – glyphosate being patented as an ‘antibiotic’ by Monsanto in 2011.

Kellogg’s has been making cereal since 1898, but I seriously doubt its founders ever thought it would be poisoning the world at breakfast every morning.

Not only is the corn in Froot Loops sprayed with RoundUp, but it is a pesticide in its own right, registered with and regulated by the EPA. But it isn’t just Froot Loops that is of concern, for all of you who avoid sugar-laden cereals. The ‘healthful’ Kellogg’s brands are full of the stuff, too.

Kellogg’s claims that, even though they don’t use genetically engineered ingredients in Europe, in the U.S., “consumer concerns about the usage of biotech ingredients in food production are low.”

Kashi, Bare Naked, Morningstar Farms, and Gardenburger  – all brands you probably have been relying on as healthful foods to feed your family – are also contaminated.

Kellogg’s has promised to change the labeling on their Kashi brands – but they also promised that their products had hardly any GMOs in them in the first place!

Kellogg’s is feeding children pesticides & antibiotics, without their parents’ knowledge or consent. Are you going to tolerate that?

You can bet that the ‘vigorous testing of their products is a lie, too. They told us that all these brands were verified as non-GMO.

The truth? Kashi lied. Cornucopia Institute tested Kashi’s GoLean cereal and found it to contain 100% genetically engineered soy. The company’s response? Just get used to GMO contamination!

In response to the question, “Do you use GMO ingredients?”Kashi said,

“factors such as pollen drift from nearby crops and current practices in agricultural storage, handling, and shipping, has led to an environment in North America where GMOs are not sufficiently segregated. As a result, some of our foods include ingredients made from genetically engineered crops.”

You can boycott them, petition them, or call them at 1 (800) 962-1413, but I suggest you make it very clear that you won’t be eating their poison products any longer. Enough is enough!

Mexican Supreme Court Refuses to Review Monsanto Appeal on GMO Maize Permits*

The first chamber of the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has refused to review or analyze an appeal by Monsanto regarding the issuance of commercial permits for the sowing of GMO maize in the country.

In this way, the decision to resolve the GMO trials involving the companies Monsanto, Dow, Pioneer and Dupont, as well as the Mexican Government Departments of the Environment and Agriculture, and on the other side, civil society and academic organizations that are opposed to the sowing of GMO maize, will have to be resolved by the First Collegiate Court on Civil Matters.

This review case began last January, when the Collegial Court was about to issue a ruling on whether to maintain the precautionary measure imposed in September 2013, which banned the authorizations for GMO maize plantings pending resolution of the problem. On January 26, the Court suspended the vote on the resolution because Monsanto submitted a petition to the SCJN.

The lawyer of the civil society Corn Collective, René Sánchez Galindo, explained that last Wednesday in a private meeting, the Supreme Court judges evaluated the appeal that Monsanto filed. None of the judges endorsed the company’s request, which was a requirement for the Court to place the appeal on its docket.

Galindo considered that the arguments of the company—that transgenic maize is not harmful to health and the environment—are repetitive and reiterate what the companies Dow, Pioneer and Dupont said in another 22 lawsuits. He recalled that the Appeals Court ruled, inter alia, that the benefits of GMOs are uncertain. This decision was not contested by the Biotech companies, which have not been able to show the economic benefit of GMOs.

The suspension of planting GMO maize has been in force throughout the country after a court decision three and a half years ago, after a group of organizations, academics and citizens presented a collective action against the planting of GMO maize in Mexico.

In that year (2013) the federal government was ready to give commercial permits for the cultivation of GMO Maize, but District Court 12 determined that the government should set as a precautionary measure the suspension of the issuance of planting permits to companies until the courts could consider the scientific and economic metrics.

This original measure was decided based on considering the risk of environmental damage from the cultivation of GMO maize. The companies that had submitted applications for commercial planting permits challenged the resolution.

Since then, both the Mexican Environment and Agriculture Departments and the Biotech companies have filed about 100 challenges, including 26 appeal trials, 16 review appeals, 15 complaints, seven revocations and seven challenges to the admission of the complaint, According to the organization Seeds of Life.

After surpassing all those challenges, the trial began in May 2016, with the original judicial determination to maintain the suspension of the cultivation of transgenic maize.

Quaker Oats Sued Over Glyphosate Found in ‘All Natural’ Foods*

Quaker Oats Sued Over Glyphosate Found in ‘All Natural’ Foods*

Quaker Oats, owned by PepsiCo, has been sued over its “all natural” oats containing high levels of glyphosate weed killer (sold as “Roundup” by Monsanto).

The New York Times, forever a defender of Monsanto and GMOs, is blatantly lying to its readers by claiming the glyphosate found in Quaker Oats is nothing more than “traces.” In reality, the glyphosate contamination of Quaker Oats was tested at alarming levels by a St. Louis laboratory using the ELISA technique.

Natural News recently reported those numbers in a previous article. They were also released by the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH-USA.org). The tests revealed glyphosate in whole wheat bread, bagels, hot cereals, coffee creamers, instant oatmeal and more.

Deadly glyphosate now being sprayed on oats, wheat, barley and other crops as a dessicant

Quaker Oats admits that its oats are sprayed with glyphosate by farmers. This fact is a total shock to most consumers who are completely unaware that glyphosate is now routinely sprayed on non-GMO crops. Via the NY Times:

In a statement, the Quaker Oats Company said that it did not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process but that it might be applied by farmers to certain grains before harvest… Oats are not a genetically engineered crop. But glyphosate is increasingly being used as a “dessicant” to dry out crops to speed harvesting.

The Quaker Oats company, apparently staffed by people who are scientifically illiterate, believes it can “wash off” the glyphosate even though it’s already soaked into the oats. As the NY Times continues:

The company said it puts the oats it receives through a cleansing process. “Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are trace amounts and significantly below any limits which have been set by the E.P.A. as safe for human consumption,” the company said.

But one thing I’ve come to learn as a food scientist — I’m the lab science director of CWC Labs and the author of Food Forensics — is that glyphosate survives food washing and food processing! That’s how it ends up fully intact in beer, cereals and other products.

“Glyphosate residues are neither removed by washing nor broken down by cooking. The herbicide residue remains on food for more than a year, even if processed, dried, or frozen.” – The Dirt Cure Growing Healthy Kids with Food Straight from Soil by Maya Shetreat Klein MD.

NY Times refuses to call out EPA’s criminal collusion with the biotech industry

The NY Times goes on to report:

A test paid for by lawyers for the plaintiffs, the Richman Law Group, found glyphosate at a level of 1.18 parts per million in a sample of Quaker Oats Quick 1-Minute. This is roughly 4% of the 30 parts per million that the Environmental Protection Agency allows in cereal grains.

However, what the NY Times deliberately fails to report is that the EPA colludes with Monsanto to artificially raise contamination limits to outrageous levels as a way to protect the interests of industry.

The EPA (see EPAwatch.org and ¬EPA.news), now known as the Environmental Pollution Agency, has also colluded with the nation’s worst industrial polluters to legalize the mass distribution of extremely toxic “biosludge” (recycled human waste and industrial waste) onto farm lands, crop soils, forage fields for dairy cows, children’s playgrounds and city parks. Read the book Science for Sale by Dr. David Lewis for the jaw-dropping details of the EPA’s “sludge magic” program rooted in total quack science.

Just as the EPA did with biosludge, it raises allowable glyphosate contamination limits to whatever numbers are desired by the biotech industry. The EPA is America’s most anti-science regulator, abandoning real science at every opportunity so that it can push a pro-industry agenda of the mass poisoning of the soils and crops. And the scientifically illiterate NY Times pretends that whatever level the EPA sets is rooted in the science of public safety. It isn’t. It’s actually rooted in protecting corporate interests while poisoning the entire food supply.

That’s exactly how glyphosate ends up in your Quaker Oats oatmeal, a product that used to be truly natural and safe to eat. Now, I wouldn’t touch Quaker Oats with a six-foot snake stick!

GM Potato Varieties Approved by U.S.*

GM Potato Varieties Approved by U.S.*

By Doug Harris

* The three new potato varieties — the Russet Burbank, Ranger Russet, and Atlantic — were approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration, according to the Associated Press. They were previously cleared by the U.S. Agriculture Department.

* In addition to being resistant to the pathogen that caused the Irish potato famine, killing a million people in Ireland in the 1840’s, they are less liable to bruise or develop black spots. The potatoes also have better storing capabilities and create a lower amount of a potential carcinogen when they are cooked at high temperatures.

* The new strains, to be planted this spring and marketed in the fall, use 50% less fungicide to cut the pest population in potato fields. They “have the same taste and texture and nutritional qualities” as conventional potatoes, Simplot spokesman Doug Cole said.

The new potato varieties are the latest variety to gain approval from the U.S. government. The approvals apply to the second-generation of potatoes from Idaho-based J.R. Simplot Co. The first generation, which received final approval about two years ago, didn’t include protection from late blight or enhanced cold storage. So far, McDonald’s has decided not to use Simplot’s genetically engineered potatoes for its French fries.

Despite their initial reluctance, it may not be surprising if McDonald’s and other potato users rethink their stance on the spud. Research shows Simplot’s fries contain 14% to 27% more potato solids and less water than many other varieties, making it possible to serve more people per case of fries. The chance to serve potatoes that last longer and result in less food waste also could be enticing.

Opponents of genetically modified crops have expressed concern about the safety of the crops even though the FDA has shown no difference between these varieties and their traditional counterparts. Still, those ongoing concerns could continue to minimize growth of the promising food technology.

Analysts estimated the GMO food market has increased in recent years because of the nutritional value those items offer, according to Research Nester. The global GMO food market will rise at a compound annual growth rate of 3.2% by the end of 2021.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents Kellogg, PepsiCo and other food and beverage companies, estimates that as much as 80% of packaged foods contain genetically modified ingredients.

GMO Wheat Trials to Begin in Europe*

By Paul Fassa

Due to the popularity of gluten-free food items, and the rise of digestive disorders related to wheat allergies, much of the public believes that our modern wheat supplies are grown from genetically modified seeds. But this is not the case. There are currently no approved genetically modified varieties of wheat in the market place.

That may soon be changing in Europe, however, as the Rothamsted Research group working in collaboration with researchers from the University of Essex and Lancaster University has reportedly received approval in the U.K. to begin trials of genetically modified wheat. (Source.)

Peter Melchett of the UK Soil Association that supports organic farming said:

We do not believe that this trial should go ahead. It is vital that the trial crop does not escape from the trial site given the inclusion of antibiotic resistance and herbicide tolerance genes, but that is exactly what has happened on multiple occasions with GM wheat trials elsewhere.

It has been proven that there is gene drift from pollen even from GMO test fields to existing non-GMO and organic field farms. There are also seed mix-ups that can occur within seed storage facilities. Organic and non-GMO farmers have shown evidence that it is impossible to maintain coexistence without contamination from GMO crops. (Source)

For example, Switzerland, international corporate home of Monsanto’s chief GMO rival Syngenta, will not allow open field GMO testing. So Syngenta uses the United States and other areas for their open field trials with empty lots and fields leased locally, and usually unknown to non-GMO farmers in the same area.

GMO Wheat Has a Negative Economic Impact on Wheat Exports out of the U.S.

An Oregon wheat farmer’s unexpected discovery of GMO contamination from what is believed to have been GMO wheat open field testing ten years earlier created a halt of wheat exports from the U.S. to several countries back in 2013, harming U.S. wheat exports that year. (Source.)

Asian and E.U. nations that have zero tolerance for GMO won’t allow GMO traces of grain imports due to their labeling laws, even if only suspected of genetically altered wheat and other grains or crops, which had led to refusing it instead of purchasing it.

In other words, GMO crops have an economic impact on non-GMO and organic crop exporters in the USA, yet GMO seed producers refuse to produce mapping of their testing fields and the federal government protects their secrecy. (Source)

This was a major flop at the time, resulting in lawsuits initiated by conventional and organic farmer groups against Monsanto for damages suffered by GMO grains discovered in their non-GMO exports of wheat that excluded them from exporting their crops. And since there is no commercially offered GMO wheat in the USA yet, these were from field tests only. (Source)

GMO Crops Worldwide: A Serious Health Impact

Despite the mainstream media’s refusal to seriously acknowledge the growing sentiment against GMO agriculture, many unbiased independent scientists attest that GMO agriculture threatens our health and the future of food itself.

It’s not only the dangers of genetic damage to animal and human life, but many GMO crops were created mostly for the purpose of withstanding toxic pesticides and herbicides that the GMO people create themselves. One such herbicide is the world’s top seller, Roundup.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient of Roundup, and as you may now know, it has been declared as a probable carcinogenic by a committee of international independent scientists commissioned by the WHO (World Health Organization).

More on glyphosate.

Is it Just the Gluten, or is There More to Gluten Sensitivity?

There is a growing suspicion that perhaps glyphosate is more responsible for the growing epidemic of gluten sensitivity than simply gluten. Rather than simply blaming gluten for digestive issues and gut inflammation completely and creating a whole new food industry of gluten free products, which can be unhealthy themselves, there is more evidence that the culprit for gut inflammation responses to wheat and grains is largely due to glyphosate and the gluten that’s common in harmfully processed breads and baked goods.

A major reason Monsanto created Roundup Ready GMO crops is to withstand their herbicides without being destroyed themselves. Genetically engineered crops are meant to absorb glyphosate completely in order to prevent Roundup herbicides from killing them while they suffocate weeds, that’s all part of the design.

So those who consume non-organic corn or soy products alone, which are 90 percent plus GMO and are ubiquitous in processed and snack foods, are taking in the bulk of glyphosate herbicide toxicity.

Add factory farming livestock that are used for non-organic milk and dairy and slaughtered for most meat products as glyphosate carriers. They are fed GMO soy and/or corn meal from crops that are filled with glyphosate.

Consider that French molecular biologist Gilles-Éric Seralini and other independent researchers have determined that other adjunct booster chemicals in glyphosate herbicides create an even more toxic synergy than the active ingredient of glyphosate alone. (Study text)

They were able to isolate those other ingredients with state of the art chemical analysis lab equipment. Those ingredients can be protected by so called “Trade Secrets Law.” Roundup’s other ingredients were never divulged to the EPA. So the EPA had allowed glyphosate herbicides claiming glyphosate was actually safe.

A class action suit has been initiated by cancer victims who dealt directly with applying Roundup; they claim glyphosate in that product caused their cancer. From this some evidence that an EPA top official suppressed EPA scientists from disclosing glyphosate dangers has emerged.

A letter from a deceased former EPA official whistleblower has created an attempt by plaintiff lawyers to get more documentation of her claims. Questions about EPA-Monsanto collusion raised in cancer lawsuits:

But wait, the topic is wheat. And wheat is not genetically modified to withstand Roundup or other glyphosate herbicides yet – right?

Commercially Grown Wheat and Other Grains are Desiccated with Roundup

To desiccate means to dry up or completely remove the moisture. A lot of grains, especially wheat and oats grown in the upper Midwestern and Northwest states as well as Canada are confronted with short harvesting times as winter sets in.

A few decades ago grain growers in Scotland discovered they could shorten harvest times by killing and drying the wheat before winter set in to possibly ruin the crop. They used Roundup for desiccating grain crops since so far there are no Roundup Ready GMO grain seeds and those crops do not resist Roundup’s glyphosate. This has become common in North America lately.

Use of Glyphosate Correlates with Rise in Gluten Sensitive Diseases

They say glyphosate binds to gluten in grains, and glyphosate is known to cause intestinal irritation, damage, and gut flora problems. This may be another link to the gluten source of intestinal issues, according to independent scientists.

Above is a timeline of Celiac incidence graphed against incidence of desiccating wheat with glyphosate herbicides. A similar graph exists with glyphosate herbicides and autism.

And now we have trace amounts of glyphosate appearing in organic grains. The amounts are small, but they shouldn’t be there at all. That’s what international importers of our grains declare, and they’re getting stricter about that.

It’s possible that irrigation streams and rainwater may be responsible for spreading elements of glyphosate. Another possibility is spraying from aircraft could be affecting organic farms near GMO areas. Organic barley has been the most affected. This even threatens our domestic organic beer industry. (Source)

Dr. Don Huber, Professor Emeritus, Plant Pathology of Purdue University, has been attacked by GMO industry hacks and academic researchers who depend on GMO industry funding for his critical view of GMOs and glyphosate’s affect on plant foods, the soil they inhabit, and the farm animals fed with GMO corn and soy meal.

Dr. Huber’s open letter appeal to investigate GMO farming further was sent to the USDA head at the time, Tom Vilsack. It was ignored. Then the attacks, even from Purdue University, began. Coincidence?

Dr. Huber told Dr. Joseph Mercola in an interview that while independent testing has confirmed the chronic toxicity of GMOs and Roundup, which the industry denies and decries, they have not provided proof of their long term safety. Dr. Huber stated:

When the EPA employed the term ‘substantially equivalent,’ it gave the chemical companies essentially a waiver on doing any of the safety tests. The only thing that they’ve ever tested for is acute toxicity. Well, we know that glyphosate, for instance, isn’t an acute toxin. It’s a serious chronic toxin. [Emphasis added] That’s been well-established in peer-reviewed scientific articles. We have more of those coming along all the time. There is no question that it’s a chronic toxin. (Source)

Dr. Stephanie Seneff and Dr. Anthony Samsel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have focused on glyphosate’s environmental, animal, and human damage extensively. They have examined several independent lab reports and done epidemiological studies, of which the above graph is one example, with similar graphs for autism rates.

They released a statement that corroborates Dr. Huber’s remarks of chronic toxicity leading to a toxic overload from daily food consumption of glyphosate treated crops, whether GMO or conventional farmers’ desiccating: (Source)

It’s just that you don’t get killed or die today from it; you have to suffer through the process of gluten intolerance, leaky gut, Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, or any of those diseases that are related to the health of your gut, which we’re seeing now on an epidemic scale in our society.

Activated charcoal is a possible remedy to detox from glyphosate in the body. Also, this short video is worth viewing for understanding how to employ niacin as part of the detox in lieu of saunas.

How the FDA and USDA Allowed Industry Demands to Ruin Bread and Pasta

Chemically bleaching flour is banned in Europe, where so far nutritional food has some value. There, white flour is created by letting the crushed grains age in the open air and sun for several days. No chemicals are used.

Elsewhere, including here in the USA, even many so-called whole grain breads have some chemically bleached white flour in them. Before it becomes flour, wheat and other non-organic factory farmed grains are treated with fungicides, pesticides, and insecticides from seedling to storage. A really bad start!

Wheat itself was agriculturally hybrid naturally to increase its gluten content, satisfying mass producing bakery demands for an easier, gummier, and more pliable dough to deal with for mass production.

Then the highly nutritious bran and the husk with fiber are removed leaving only the light yellow endosperm, which is virtually all starch with very little nutritional value and a high glycemic index rating.

In order to bypass the aging process, add shelf life, and get that clean white colour, the endosperm is crushed and treated with chlorides to get it white instantly. A byproduct of this process is alloxan, which is used to induce diabetes in lab animals for medical testing!

Never mind looking for that on bread labels. Alloxan is a byproduct of the bleaching process, not an ingredient. To avoid it, simply put any bread back on the shelf that includes white flour unless you’re in Europe or it specifically states unbleached white flour.

And now for the clincher. In order to make the flour dough even easier to use by large scale commercial bakeries, they bromate the flour by adding potassium bromate. In addition to blocking iodine that your thyroid needs to fully function as the control center for your endocrine (hormones) system, potassium bromate is carcinogenic.

Monsanto + Syngenta Lobby Tanzanian Government to Pass Law Jailing Farmers who Exchange their Traditional Seeds*

Monsanto + Syngenta Lobby Tanzanian Government to Pass Law Jailing Farmers who Exchange their Traditional Seeds*

By Amando Flavio

Before our very eyes, we’re witnessing the takeover of our food and water by corporations. Especially on food; there has been a significant surge in giant agricultural biotechnology corporations trying to eliminate our traditional crops, thus, putting small scale farmers out of work.

These corporations specialize in genetic engineering—the process of altering the genome of crops to increase yield or make them disease resistant. When these new crops are produced through genetic engineering, the corporations patent it, meaning they have full rights, including the intellectual rights over the crops in question.

Of course, genetic crops have negative consequences on the human body if consumed. There have been numerous studies linking cancer and other deadly diseases to the consumption of genetically modified food. But apart from the health concern, a major genetic crop threat to humanity is their replacement of our natural and traditional crops. This means once farmers keep planting genetic crops, the traditional ones fade out, and soon, farmers will rely heavily on the corporations to get the seedlings to plant. In the end, all our hands go directly into the mouths of the corporations. They decide to give us or not to give us our food.  This very danger is the main reason countries such as Russia and China have banned Monsanto-made crops in their respective nations.

But as concerned observers raise the red flag regarding the dangers of genetic food, the corporations – with the help of few governments in the West – are lobbying and forcing poorer countries to accept genetic crops.

Tanzania is a country in East Africa. As a developing country, much of the population engages in subsistence agricultural activities to feed their families and get little money. This makes the Tanzanian economy agric-based. The sector accounts for 24.5% of the total gross domestic product, providing 85% of exports, and employing over half of the workforce in the country.

But now, these small-scale farmers are in trouble. Monsanto and Syngenta, with the help of the so-called G8 countries, have lobbied lawmakers in Tanzania to pass a law that would put small scale farmers in jail for up to 12 years if caught exchanging their own traditional seedlings for planting.

Monsanto is an American multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Syngenta is a global Swiss agribusiness that produces agrochemicals and seeds. Headquartered in the city of Basel, the company also conducts genomic research.

In Tanzania and many African nations, it is common for farmers to exchange seeds among themselves during planting seasons. This new law in Tanzania has outlawed the years-long practice that has established the foundations of Tanzanian agriculture. The law claims traditional seeds are not certified. Farmers would have to therefore rely on genetic engineered seeds from Monsanto or Syngenta.

According to activists against the law, in order to receive development assistance from the West, Tanzania was ordered by these Western governments to allow Western agribusiness corporations operating in the country the full freedom, as well as an enclosed protection, for patented seeds.

“Eighty percent of the seeds are being shared and sold in an informal system between neighbors, friends and family. The new law criminalizes the practice in Tanzania,” Michael Farrelly of TOAM, an organic farming movement in Tanzania, said.

Apart from the law putting farmers in jail, it also gives commercial investors faster and better access to agricultural land, as well as a very strong protection of intellectual property rights. Leading investors in the agric sector in the country are Monsanto and Syngenta.

Tanzania applied the legislation concerning intellectual property rights on seeds as a condition for receiving development assistance through the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (NAFSN). The NAFSN was launched in 2012 by the G8, with the goal to help 50 million people out of poverty and hunger in ten African partner countries through a public-private partnership. The initiative receives support from the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, the World Bank and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“If you buy seeds from Syngenta or Monsanto under the new legislation, they will retain the intellectual property rights. If you save seeds from your first harvest, you can use them only on your own piece of land for non-commercial purposes. You’re not allowed to share them with your neighbours or with your sister-in-law in a different village, and you cannot sell them for sure. But that’s the entire foundation of the seed system in Africa,” Farrelly said.

So you see? Western countries and their so-called charity organizations are forcing people deeper into poverty in the poorer countries. What’s more, this isn’t limited to Tanzania. These corporations, with the backing of the G8, are doing all they can to have such laws in other developing countries so that they can continue to exploit the people.
