Excessive Heat, a ‘silent killer’*

Excessive Heat, a ‘silent killer’*

If you plan on being out and about in summer, chances are you’ll be exposed to a lot of sun and higher temperatures.

How much heat can a person safely endure? It depends.

Between 1999 -2009, more than 7,200 people died from heat-related causes, an average of 658 per year, according to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Heat can be a silent killer because it doesn’t topple trees or rip roofs off houses like tornadoes and hurricanes,” says Eli Jacks, chief of fire and public weather services with NOAA’s National Weather Service. “Nevertheless, it’s a dangerous weather condition for which people should prepare.”

Certain groups of people should be especially careful during hot weather conditions. For example, city-dwellers and those living in the upper floors of tall buildings or in heat-prone regions are most at-risk for heat-related illness. People who have difficulty getting around or who have health conditions are particularly susceptible. The elderly and the very young also merit special attention during periods of high heat and humidity.

NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have partnered to increase awareness for outdoor workers and their employers during excessive heat events. As part of this effort, NWS will incorporate specific outdoor worker safety precautions when heat advisories and warnings are issued.

No matter what your job is or how you spend your free time, prevention of heat-related illness is key. Here’s what you can do:

1. Be informed and stay alert

Pay close attention to heat advisories or warnings that have been issued for your community.

  • NOAA’s National Weather Service continually updates heat-related advisories and warnings online at weather.gov. (Click on “Excessive Heat Warning” and “Heat Advisory” under the U.S. map — if there are no current warnings or advisories in the United States, nothing will appear).

  • NOAA issues excessive heat warnings when weather conditions pose an imminent threat to life and heat advisories when weather conditions are expected to cause significant discomfort or inconvenience or — if caution is not taken — become life threatening.

  • If you do not have Internet access, you can get heat advisory and warning information by watching your local television or radio newscast or by purchasing a NOAA weather radio and tuning into NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards.

  • Use the temperature and humidity to figure out the heat index for your area, a measure that tells us how hot it feels.

Plan for periods of extreme heat

  • Visit your physician for a check-up to find out if you have a health condition that may be exacerbated by hot weather.
  • Service your air conditioner before hot weather arrives, and obtain window fans to help cool your home.
  • Know where to go when weather heats up. Find cool indoor places to spend time on hot summer days, such as a local library, shopping mall, museum or aquarium.

Know what to do and what not to do during hot weather

  • DO – Slow down, and reduce strenuous activity. Mow the lawn or garden in the early morning or late evening instead of midday.
  • DO – Dress in lightweight, non-restrictive, light-colored clothing.
  • DO – Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic fluids.
  • DO – Eat light, easy-to-digest foods.
  • DO – Seek out shade if you have to be outdoors for extended periods. Spend more time in air-conditioned places.
  • DO – Check on elderly neighbours, friends and relatives to make sure they are okay.
  • DO – When outside, take frequent dips in the ocean or pool, or mist yourself with a water bottle. When inside, take frequent cool baths or showers and use cold compresses to cool off.
  • DO – Apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently when outdoors.
  • DO – Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat illness. (See chart below for symptoms, likely conditions and treatment.)

However, please remember:

  • DO NOT leave children, the elderly, or pets in the car for any reason, for any length of time. Look before you lock! A dark dashboard or seat can easily reach temperatures in the range of 180 to more than 200 degrees F!
  • DO NOT stay in the sun for long periods.
  • DO NOT take salt tablets unless directed by a physician.
  • AVOID alcoholic beverages; they can dehydrate you and increase your risk of heat stroke and other potentially fatal heat-related illnesses.

4. Know the warning signs of heat-related illness*

Too much exposure to heat can raise your body temperature to unhealthy levels and may make you ill — it can also be deadly. Take the precautions listed above and be on the lookout for these warning signs that you may be in trouble:

Symptom Likely Condition Treatment
Painful muscle cramps and spasms, usually in muscles of legs and abdomen. Heavy sweating. Heat cramps Apply firm pressure on cramping muscles or gently massage to relieve spasm.

Give sips of water; if nausea occurs, discontinue water intake.

Consult with a clinician or physician if individual has fluid restrictions (e.g., dialysis patients).

Heavy sweating, weakness, cool skin, pale and clammy. Weak pulse. Normal temperature possible. Possible muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, nausea and vomiting. Heat exhaustion Move individual out of sun, lay him or her down, and loosen clothing.

Apply cool, wet cloths.

Fan or move individual to air conditioned room.

Give sips of water; if nausea occurs, discontinue water intake.

If vomiting continues, seek immediate medical attention. Consult with a clinician or physician if individual has fluid restrictions (e.g., dialysis patients).

Altered mental state. Possible throbbing headache, confusion, nausea and dizziness. High body temperature (106°F or higher). Rapid and strong pulse. Possible unconsciousness. Skin may be hot and dry, or patient may be sweating. Sweating likely especially if patient was previously involved in vigorous activity. Heat stroke Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency.

Summon emergency medical assistance or get the individual to a hospital immediately.

Delay can be fatal.

Move individual to a cooler, preferably air-conditioned, environment.

Reduce body temperature with a water mister and fan or sponging.

Use air conditioners. Use fans if heat index temperatures are below the high 90s. Use extreme caution.

Remove clothing. If temperature rises again, repeat process. Do not give fluids.

‘Our future is slavery, West gets everything’ in Mineral-rich, Money-poor Congo*

‘Our future is slavery, West gets everything’ in Mineral-rich, Money-poor Congo*

RT Documentary travels to the vast, near-landlocked Democratic Republic of Congo, prized for its mineral resources, but plagued by centuries of colonial rule, dictatorship, civil wars and lawlessness, and meets people trying to make a living in one of the most desperate places on Earth.

The documentary crew’s key to understanding the country, seven times the size of Germany, was Bernard Kalume Buleri, born in 1960, the same year DRC was granted its independence from Belgium. Buleri served as an interpreter, guide, and finally the hero and symbol of the country, having been a direct participant in some of its bloodiest chapters.

Bernard Kalume Buleri/RT Documentary ‘Congo, My Precious’ / RT

“I can’t say that the Congolese, we are in control of our destiny. No, because the ones who benefit from our minerals are not the local population, but Western countries are the ones who are taking everything. They make themselves rich, while we are getting poorer and poorer, says Buleri.

The country of almost 80 million is one of the world’s largest exporters of diamonds, coltan – essential for electronics – and has massive deposits of copper, tin and cobalt.

“I’m afraid even for my children. Because they will continue in this system to be slaves forever. We’ll never be powerful enough to challenge the Western countries. So, the future will be the future of slaves,” Buleri continues.

There is plenty of blame to go around for the predicament of what is also a fertile and scenic land.

With almost no educated elite, DRC was poorly-prepared for its separation from Belgian rule, now best remembered for the atrocity-filled reign of King Leopold II, which may have killed up to half of the country’s population.

The vacuum was filled by the archetype-setting African kleptocrat Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled the country for more than three decades, until he was deposed in 1997, plunging Africa into a series of continent-wide conflicts that may have resulted in as many 5 million deaths through violence, starvation and disease.

The country’s below-ground wealth means that it was never left alone for long enough to reform and wean itself off its reliance on metals and gems – the widely-mentioned “mineral curse.” The mines the RT crew passes are now owned by local warlords, chiefs and officials, with exports mostly going to China.

Salinga Prosper is a coltan and cassiterite prospector at the Mokengu Family Mine, located a two-hour walk away from the village of Tchonka. Every day, he wakes up at 4am, walks by foot to the mine, and works till sunset, digging for metals that he will sell at 1/20th of the price they will eventually fetch on the market.

“We are always hungry. We do this so our children don’t starve,” he tells the RT crew.

“What else can we do in this region? This is our destiny. Anyone not strong enough joins the army or the gangsters. But the strong, we work here.”

Millions of locals – perhaps one-fifth of the adult population, at some point – are employed in what is known as artisanal mining, inefficient small-scale prospecting with simple handheld tools, with no safety measures or guaranteed wages. But for a country that ranks 227th out of 230 for GDP per capita, according to World Bank data, any job at all is a matter of survival.

“At least we can earn something, not like when we were just unpaid slaves,” Wassa Mokengu, the mine owner, who likes to remind his employees that they used to be paid with rice and salt in colonial times, tells the documentary makers.

The acceptance of their circumstances by the Congolese is in equal parts dispiriting and admirable. Bulemi himself says that he paid a Hutu militia the equivalent of $5 to shoot – not cut apart – his Tutsi wife in Rwanda, when they came to slaughter her with a machete during the genocide.

He found his second wife, then a prostitute, in a local bar back in his homeland, and has started a new family, though he admits that he is haunted by the past, and anxious about the future.

“I’m struggling: I try to stay stable, I try to have a normal life. But inside me… sometimes I feel I’m dead,” he says. “We don’t understand what kind of system they have put in to rule this world. I don’t talk about other countries; I’m talking about my country, my family. And the worst, I don’t see a solution – I don’t think there is a solution.”

“Congo, My Precious” will be broadcast on RT on July 5, 6 and 9, and on RTD every day between July 5-12. It will also be available online here.

Gentrification of #HarlemIsHarlem*

Gentrification of #HarlemIsHarlem*

Harlem is the latest area of NYC to be overrun by white people seeking to take over the historic district and rename it. (Source: Max Pixel)

Are Black people losing Harlem to gentrification? And what is SoHa? Gentrifiers want to rename Harlem between 110th and 125th Streets SoHa for Southern Harlem. We have been here before. Welcome to the world of gentrification. This latest move has local residents furious, amid this latest attempt to rob Black people of their culture and their community.

Some realtors and store owners are making the move and attempting to rebrand the neighborhood, as NY1 reported. This is an effort by some interests to make the area appear trendy in an effort to appeal to outsiders. The name evokes images of other trendy Manhattan communities such as SoHo, Tribeca, NoMad and Nolita. However, the rebranding effort has Harlemites concerned that this initiative will only whitewash this capital of Black America and erase the history of this unique and historic part of New York City in the process.

Community and political leaders are speaking out.

“How dare someone try to rob our culture, and try to act as if we were not here, and create a new name, a new reality as if the clock started when other people showed up?” said State Senator-Elect Brian Benjamin at a recent news conference, according to NY1.

“No real estate company, no coffee shop, no business should be using the term SoHa to refer to Harlem,” added Danni Tyson, a Community Board 10 member and real estate broker.

Tyson noted that Harlem already has a wonderful brand name that is known all over the world.

Rev. James Booker Jr., of St. John AME Church on W. 131st Street said that rebranding Harlem to increase profits for the New York real estate board would greatly diminish the economic strength of New York City. “Folks wanna change the name so they can move a lot of us who look like us out,” Rev. Booker told the New York Daily News.

One spoken word poet, Jaylene Clark, captured the sentiments of the community regarding gentrification with her poem “SpaHa” (short for Spanish Harlem) a few years ago:

Other folks have taken to social media to express their outrage and indignation, and express concerns over what is in store for Harlem and what needs to be done in response:

Ya’ll want to live in Harlem but don’t want to accept it’s cultural history and name then stay the F out of Harlem. #SOHA #NOtoSOHA #FOH

— Jem (@JemClassic) May 27, 2017

#SoHa? No it’s called #Harlem, an area with a rich history and a vibrant community. Don’t whitewash history.

— Tony H (@tonyhemp) May 26, 2017

Just hope the #SoHa controversy leads to a real conversation about tenants rights, property ownership, and equitable community development.

— Hayling (@BrotherHayling) June 1, 2017

Go ahead, tell me you live in #SOHA so I can punch your #gentrification dumbass until you start bleeding kale #NYC

— Zo (@zo_718) May 29, 2017

Home to such iconic institutions as the Schomburg Center and the Apollo Theater, Harlem has served as a cultural, political and economic center for Black America over the years and has cultivated generations of Black leadership. Now, Harlem, not unlike so many other cities across the nation, faces gentrification as indigenous Black residents are pushed out of communities they can no longer afford, becoming strangers in their own neighborhoods. From Atlanta, Austin and Baltimore to CharlestonMiami, New Orleans and San Francisco, gentrification is impacting people everywhere. This, as low-income people are evicted in order to make way for high-tech startups, hipsters and the well-to-do, those who have no stake in these spaces they invade and claim as their own and no appreciation for the people they displace.

This most recent controversy in Harlem comes as the New York borough of Brooklyn emerges as the most expensive place to live — in the country. Last year, Bloomberg reported that Brooklyn outpaced even Manhattan and San Francisco in its cost of living. The median sales price for housing is $615,000, and it takes 98% of Brooklyn residents’ median income to afford a monthly payment on a place to live. Investors dominate the market in Brooklyn, where 70% of people rent and rental prices are increasing.

In the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, where gentrification has taken hold, the famed two-story mural of the late rapper Biggie Smalls has been threatened with destruction. As Vibe reported, a landlord — who claimed he received complaints from tenants who claimed the mural received too much attention from tourists—  planned to remove the mural from the side of a building to add more windows and raise the rent. The creators of the mural reached an agreement with the landlord and the mural will remain for now.

But this is not over, as so many of our cultural institutions, our living spaces and our communities are whitewashed, rebranded and renamed, and the people threatened with removal, all for the sake of profits for others. Where does it leave us if we cannot even name our own home, much less live in it?

How the World Map Looks Wildly Different from What You Think*

From Alexandra Bruce

Most of us have an idea of what the world map looks like, based on its most popular representation, the Mercator Projection. This is an extremely flawed 2D representation
of the Earth’s landmasses, due to the spherical shape of the planet.

This clip shows how completely skewed the actual sizes are the world’s countries, according the Mercator Projection.

I have been being trolled by Flat Earthers in the Comments sections lately and I invite all reasonable people to correct perpetrators and/or victims of the nefarious newfangled Flat Earth psyop/trope at will.

American Government Chemical/Biological Attacks On Its Own Citizens, Waco 1993

The spectacle of the U.S. manufacturing a gas attack by Al Assad was made all the more grotesque Tuesday when Sean Spicer said that “even Hitler did not use chemical weapons.” He meant on his own people. As a reader, Glen, points out, only the U.S. does that.

‘I see the lies and propaganda we Americans are fed every day, and it makes my blood boil. What I really find disgusting and discouraging, though, is the gullibility of the people, who wouldn’t know the truth, or even where or how to search for the truth if their life depended upon it.”

By Glen

Here we go again. Another giant psy-op has been perpetrated upon the American people. I do not wish to proclaim the innocence or guilt of Bashar Assad, but to look at the perpetrator of the missile attack on the sovereign nation of Syria.

Our president ranted and raved about the inhumanity of Assad and then proceeded to launch 60 cruise missiles at Syria. Nations who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Here is a short list of some of the atrocities carried out by the United States in its short 200 hundred plus years of existence. Most of the information comes from the Wikipedia page “Unethical Human Experimentation in the United States”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unethical_human_experimentation_in_the_United_StatesThese are chemical and biological experiments the U.S. carried out on its own soldiers and citizens.

  1. The first listing of a biological attack happened on the American continent before the United States was even a nation. “During the French and Indian WarJeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, Britain’s commander in chief in North America authorized the use of smallpox to wipe out their Native American enemy. In his writings to Colonel Henry Bouquet about the situation in western Pennsylvania,[12] Amherst suggested that the spread of disease would be beneficial in achieving their aims. Colonel Bouquet confirmed his intentions to do so.”

    2.  “In the 1880s, in Hawaii, a California physician working at a hospital for lepers injected six girls under the age of 12 with syphilis. “

    3. “In 1908, three Philadelphia researchers infected dozens of children with tuberculin at the St. Vincent’s House orphanage in Philadelphia, causing permanent blindness in some of the children and painful lesions and inflammation of the eyes in many of the others. In the study, they refer to the children as “material used”.

    4.  ” In 1911, Dr. Hideyo Noguchi of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research injected 146 hospital patients (some of whom were children) with syphilis.”

    5. “In 1950, in order to conduct a simulation of a biological warfare attack, the U.S. Navy sprayed large quantities of the bacteria Serratia marcescens – considered harmless at this time – over the city of San Francisco during a project called Operation Sea-Spray. Numerous citizens contracted pneumonia-like illnesses, and at least one person died as a result.”

    6. “In 1963, 22 elderly patients at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital in Brooklyn, New York were injected with live cancer cells by Chester M. Southam, who in 1952 had done the same to prisoners at the Ohio State Prison, in order to “discover the secret of how healthy bodies fight the invasion of malignant cells”. The administration of the hospital attempted to cover the study up, but the New York medical licensing board ultimately placed Southam on probation for one year. Two years later, the American Cancer Society elected him as their Vice President.”

    7. “From 1963 to 1969 as part of Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense (SHAD), the U.S. Army performed tests which involved spraying several U.S. ships with various biological and chemical warfare agents, while thousands of U.S. military personnel were aboard the ships. The personnel were not notified of the tests, and were not given any protective clothing. Chemicals tested on the U.S. military personnel included the nerve gases VX and Sarin, toxic chemicals such as zinc cadmium sulfide and sulfur dioxide, and a variety of biological agents.”

    8. “In 1966, the U.S. Army released Bacillus globigii into the tunnels of the New York City Subway system, as part of a field study called A Study of the Vulnerability of Subway Passengers in New York City to Covert Attack with Biological Agents.[48][53][54][55][56] The Chicago subway system was also subject to a similar experiment by the Army.

  2.  “Researchers in the United States have performed thousands of human radiation experiments to determine the effects of atomic radiation and radioactive contamination on the human body, generally on people who were poor, sick, or powerless.[57] Most of these tests were performed, funded, or supervised by the United States militaryAtomic Energy Commission, or various other U.S. federal government agencies.”

” In a 1949 operation called the “Green Run,” the AEC released iodine-131 and xenon-133 to the atmosphere near the Hanford site in Washington, which contaminated a 500,000-acre (2,000 km2) area containing three small towns.”

“In 1953, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) ran several studies at the University of Iowa on the health effects of radioactive iodine in newborns and pregnant women. In one study, researchers gave pregnant women from 100 to 200 microcuries (3.7 to 7.4 MBq) of iodine-131, in order to study the women’s aborted embryos in an attempt to discover at what stage, and to what extent, radioactive iodine crosses the placental barrier.”

“Immediately after World War II, researchers at Vanderbilt University gave 829 pregnant mothers in Tennessee what they were told were “vitamin drinks” that would improve the health of their babies. The mixtures contained radioactive iron and the researchers were determining how fast the radioisotope crossed into the placenta. At least three children are known to have died from the experiments, from cancers and leukaemia.[72][73] Four of the women’s babies died from cancers as a result of the experiments, and the women experienced rashes, bruises, anemia, hair/tooth loss, and cancer.”

10.”From 1942 to 1944, the U.S. Chemical Warfare Service conducted experiments which exposed thousands of U.S. military personnel to mustard gas, in order to test the effectiveness of gas masks and protective clothing.”

    11. “On November 19, 1953 Dr. Frank Olson was without his knowledge or consent given an LSD dosage before his death 9 days later. For 22 years this was covered up until the Project MKUltra revelations.”

  1. Chemical weapons were used to kill children at Waco in 1993. A filmmaker found a shell casing from a certain type of inflammable tear gas round. 76 men, women and children died in the inferno.

The above listed stories are but a minute sampling of the experimentation carried on unknowing populace and military by its own government. It cannot help but prove of the hypocrisy with which anyone in our government speaks. Some will say this is all from days past, but I could not dis-agree more. Here are a few chemical and biological attacks carried on to this day in America.

Water Fluoridation in America from what I can find comes in at around 69% today, while  97% of the western European population drinks non-fluoridated water. According to the world’s oldest and most prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, fluoride is a neurotoxin classified the same as arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Our skies are sprayed on an almost daily basis, some say to save the planet (geo-engineering), some say for more nefarious reasons. Some of the known contents of these “chemtrails” are  barium chloride, aluminum oxide, synthetic polymers, bio-nano particles, and ethylene dibromide.

We are fed ever growing amounts of GMO foods in the U.S. 38 countries around the world have banned all GMO foods due to their known links to cancer.

Our children are subjected to insane vaccination schedules in America. It is now as high as 80 different inoculations before a child reaches the age of 2. One in 68 children in America is now diagnosed with autism. In the 70’s and 80’s the numbers for autism was around 1 in 2000. Children now receive up to 12 times as many vaccines as they did in the 1940’s.

So, Mr. President, If you are looking take out the largest purveyor of chemical/biological warfare attacks in the world today, maybe you need to target Washington, D.C.

“Ashamed” United Airlines CEO Vows to No Longer Use Police to Forcibly Remove Passengers*

By Tyler Durden

In the latest apology since the forced deplaning scandal broke, United CEO Oscar Munoz said his airline will no longer use law enforcement officials to remove passengers from overbooked flights following the uproar over a viral video showing a passenger being violently dragged from a plane.

“We are not going to put a law enforcement official to take them off,” Munoz said in an interview with ABC on “Good Morning America” Wednesday.

“To remove a booked, paid, seated passenger, we can’t do that.”

Munoz said he felt “shame” when he initially saw the viral video, and apologized to the passenger and family of David Dao, who remains hospitalized and is currently contemplating a legal challenge against the airline.

As reported previously, United initially offered passengers up to $800 before selecting passengers to remove from the flight. It was not clear why it didn’t keep ratcheting the offer higher until it found a clearing price instead of resorting to what eventually became the worst PR scandal in United’s recent history.

Munoz called the incident, in which police officers were eventually brought on board the plane to help remove Dao – who refused to deplane – a “system failure.” One security officer has reportedly been placed on leave.

“We have not provided our frontline supervisors and managers and individuals with the proper procedures that would allow them to use their common sense,” he said.

“This is on me. I have to fix that, and I think that’s something we can do.”

Meanwhile, an online petition calling for Munoz to resign following the incident has nearly 50,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning, but the top executive told ABC he has no plans to step down.

The Real Secrets Hidden in Antarctica…

The Real Secrets Hidden in Antarctica…

From Alexandra Bruce

There have been a lot of rumours swirling around recent activities in Antarctica and a clamor to know more about what is happening there but there has been very little of any credibility that’s been released.

Thank goodness for Truthstream Media, consummate journalists and storytellers who here unearth reports of early explorations of the Continent in 1893 by Captain Anton Larsen, where he found artifacts which appeared to be man made and subsequent explorations by the Soviets, the Polish, the UK, US and others, documenting “snowless oases”, unfrozen lakes and areas where soil temperatures averaged 77ºF at midday, due to geothermal activity. Sifting through speculation and many interesting confirmed  factoids, they reveal what is true about Antarctica.
