Southern Nevada Coal Power Plant Shut Down amid Pressure from Native American Tribe*

Southern Nevada Coal Power Plant Shut Down amid Pressure from Native American Tribe*

The Reid Gardner Generating Station

Southern Nevada’s oldest coal-fired power plant will cease operation after a half-century of production. The Moapa Band of Paiutes tribe has long blamed the plant for pollution and waste as the cause of health problems for people in the area.

The closure comes as Nevada lawmakers are soon to debate relying more on solar energy. NV Energy, the state’s dominant electric utility, will flip a switch to disconnect the Reid Gardner Generating Station from the electric grid on Thursday, according to AP.

The plant is situated 40 miles north of Las Vegas. Three of the four units were permanently shut down in December 2014.

The utility company plans to decommission and eventually demolish the plant as part of its plans to get out of the business of burning coal. It is replacing the 250 megawatts produced by the plant with a mix of natural gas and renewable energy, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

The Moapa Band of Paiutes long sought the closure of the Gardner plant, which opened in 1965 on the banks of the Muddy River. Tribe members blame pollution from the facility’s smokestacks and coal-ash dump for illnesses and death at the nearby reservation.

No health studies have definitively linked medical problems among the tribe’s roughly 300 members to the power plant next door, but Paiute officials have said research is underway.

The tribe sued NV Energy in 2013 over pollution from the plant arguing it had violated the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Clean Water Act. The company settled in 2015 agreeing to pay the tribe $4.3 million. The tribe said it planned to use the money to fund a wellness center and install air pollution monitors, according to tribal chairman Darren Daboda.

Daboda said he noticed a difference since the plant scaled back its operations in 2014. He said the air over the reservation, with has 300 members, smells better and “the fly ash has gone down,” according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

State lawmakers also spurred the move in 2013 when they passed a bill that sought to end the company’s reliance on coal to power Southern Nevada.

On Friday, tribal leaders and other dignitaries will gather for a commissioning ceremony for a new solar project.

The 250-megawatt Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project is expected to deliver enough electricity to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to supply up to 93,000 homes. It is the first-ever utility-scale solar power plant to be built on tribal land.

The coincidental timing of Friday’s ceremony was not lost on the Sierra Club, which fought alongside the Moapa Paiutes against the coal plant which then-U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid once called a “dirty relic.”

“Reid Gardner powered down just as Nevada is taking its place as a national clean energy leader,” said Elspeth DiMarzio, campaign representative for the environmental group in Nevada, according to AP. “The state now employs more than 20,000 people in the clean energy and energy efficiency industries, and they are proving they can reliably and affordably power our state without coal.”

The deserts of Nevada receive more sun than any state in the U.S. which makes it a prime spot for developers to construct solar photovoltaic or thermal generating stations. More than one-fifth of Nevada’s electrical generation comes from renewable energy sources, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

State lawmakers will soon debate a number of energy-related issues, including the state’s renewable portfolio standards and efficiency programs. One of the bills would require that 80% of the state’s energy come from renewable power sources by 2040 (right now, the requirement is 25 percent by 2025).

A key issue in this debate will be storage. Because solar and wind can be intermittent — the sun is not always shining, and the wind is not always blowing — those renewable sources often are backed up by a fossil fuel: natural gas.

In the future, large-scale batteries that store renewables could replace natural gas. Batteries are currently expensive, compared to cheap natural gas.

Experts agree that under the government of President Rafael Correa, public education improved dramatically.

During the past 10 years in Ecuador, the levels of access to education and the quality of schooling have soared even higher than those in leading European countries such as Finland, according to analysts.

Researchers from the National Education University, Ricardo Restrepo and Efstathios Stefos, released findings Wednesday that access to education has increased by 30% at the high school level and 59% in higher education institutions in the country since 2006.

Restrepo and Stefos presented in Quito their book titled “Atlas of the Right to Education in the Years of the Citizen’s Revolution,” referring to the years of the government of President Rafael Correa.

“The political will in investment is an element that allowed the transformation of education to develop in Ecuador between 2006 and 2016,” said Restrepo.

Regarding enrollment, the study details a growth of up to 97.54%, compared to figures such as 96.78* in Finland, considered the most successful model in education worldwide.

Restrepo said the results show the effectiveness of a concerted state policy to address the “social debt” the government owed to society in making the right to education a reality in the country as an international right guaranteed for all citizens.

“If we have rights declared in any instrument it is dead paper if there are no public policies that have a strategy in a democratic system,” said Restrepo.

In competitiveness, figures measured from 2006 to 2016 show Ecuador has climbed in ranking compared to countries including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Finland, Peru, Spain and the U.S.

“Ecuador rises 27 places in this ranking when the rest of countries fall,” said Restrepo.

“This means that Ecuador is the country that is improving the most and is rapidly transforming.”

According to co-author Stefos, investment in education increased over the past years and played a central role in the success of increasing quality and access to education.

“In the last school year, children received 3 million free books, almost 2 million breakfasts, 1.5 million uniforms. When we talk about millions of students, we talk about billions of dollars invested, it’s an incredible investment,” said Stefos.

The book uses figures by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, regional comparative studies from Unesco, and data from the Global Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum.

The findings of the study help lay bare what is at stake in Ecuador’s upcoming presidential run-off between governing party candidate Lenin Moreno and former banker Guillermo Lasso.

Lasso has proposed an education voucher system and greater independence for educational institutions, which his campaign claims will give parents a greater ability to choose between sending their children to public or private schools. Critics argue that Lasso’s voucher proposal seeks to privatize education and will result in tiered access to quality schooling.

What You’re Not Supposed to Know About Recovering from Diabetes*

What You’re Not Supposed to Know About Recovering from Diabetes*

By Phillip Schneider

Diabetes is considered to be one of the most common illnesses in western society. Nearly one in ten Americans have it, making it one of the most serious health epidemics of the 21st century.

The pancreas of a type 1 diabetic produces little to no insulin, which the body needs to carry glucose from the bloodstream to the cells of the body. This form is only found in about 5% of the population, and is usually diagnosed in children and teenagers. Typically, a type 1 diabetic will take frequent injections in order to maintain proper insulin levels in the body.

A type 2 diabetic has a similar problem. The most common form by far, type 2 diabetes is where the body does not know how to properly process insulin resulting in hyperglycemia, a rising of blood sugar levels beyond what is considered healthy.

“At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.” ~American Diabetes Association

Some symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, extreme hunger, sudden vision changes, dry skin and more.

Dietary Choices Found To Aid in Reversing Diabetes

In 2010, Diabetes was the 7th leading cause of death in America, but it doesn’t have to be, and scientists in the fields of natural medicine and nutrition have been working to find a cure.

In the documentary “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days,” several patients with diabetes were given the challenge of dropping their regular diets and living a purely raw vegan lifestyle for thirty days. The participants came from all different backgrounds, heritages, and weights.

These participants included Michelle, age 36 and obese; Bill, age 58 and had experienced total numbness in his feet due to the diabetes; Austin, age 25 with type 1 diabetes and a drinking problem; Kirt, age 25, who had a blood sugar level of 1200 (normal is about 80-100); Henry, age 58, who took 9 pills a day in addition to insulin; and Pam, age 62, who had diabetes throughout her family.

“You can chase them around with medicines and try to get it down, but you’re just chasing your tail. The fundamental thing in treating diabetes is what you put in your mouth.”~Dr. John Picken, Pam’s doctor

After only three days, the participants were seeing results. Austin was able to cut his insulin intake in half, while Pam was able to cut hers by one-third. Simultaneously, Kurt, Bill, and Henry’s blood sugar levels had all fallen into the normal range even after dropping all of their medications.

On day twelve, Henry had successfully dropped his blood sugar levels by 256 points and relieved himself entirely of his need for medication. However, on day 17 he felt that such a sudden change to his lifestyle was too much and his family took him home.

On day thirty, the results were in and the changes were astounding. Not only were each of them taking less medication with healthier blood sugar levels, but their energy levels and moods were improved as well. Michelle, Bill, and Pam were all freed from their medication (and 81 pounds collectively) and their blood sugar levels all dropped into the normal range. Austin had lost 20 pounds and reduced his daily insulin intake from 70 units to just 5. Kirt, who had blood sugar levels so high his doctor told him he “should be dead” dropped over eleven hundred points to as low as 73.

“No matter what anybody else says to me I know what I’m feeling and I know what I felt before…and I don’t need medication to not have to feel that way. That’s amazing.” ~Kirt

New Study Shows Fasting Can ‘Regenerate Diabetic Pancreas’

Additionally, new research has come out which shows that the pancreas of a diabetic person can be regenerated through fasting. Although this method shows some promise, no short-term or long-term human trials have been done, suggesting a raw food approach may be more sound. In fact, the diet fed to these mice was similar to the diet that the participants in the documentary had, but with 25 days of eating what they want, creating intermittent periods of feast and famine.

“Our conclusion is that by pushing the mice into an extreme state and then bringing them back – by starving them and then feeding them again – the cells in the pancreas are triggered to use some kind of developmental reprogramming that rebuilds the part of the organ that’s no longer functioning.” – Dr Valter Longo, University of Southern California

Although in certain individuals fasting has been found to produce benefits such as weight loss, speeding up of the metabolism, and a regeneration of the immune system, it can also lead to negative effects such as possible malnourishment, loss of muscle, loss of energy and more. People are advised not to try this without consulting a doctor.

There is Hope for Diabetics

For many, reclaiming your health could mean reclaiming your freedom. Remember that diabetes is a lifestyle disease. It was Hippocrates who said

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

An increasing amount of research is proving that by following this advice, it is possible to prevent or even reverse ‘incurable’ diseases like diabetes.

DTP Vaccine Associated With 212% Increased Infant Mortality Risk*

DTP Vaccine Associated With 212% Increased Infant Mortality Risk*

By Jefferey Jaxen

A study from West Africa’s Guinea-Bissau discovered that all-cause infant mortality more than doubled after the introduction of the DTP vaccination.

An observational study from the West African country Guinea-Bissau titled, “The Introduction of Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis and Oral Polio Vaccine Among Young Infants in an Urban African Community: A Natural Experiment,” examined the introduction of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) and oral polio vaccine (OPV) in an urban community in Guinea-Bissau in the early 1980s. The World Health Organization introduced the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in low-income countries in the 1970s with the goal of universal immunization for all children. In the introduction, the study’s authors state,

“Except for the measles vaccines, surprisingly few studies examined the introduction of vaccines and their impact on child survival.”

The purpose of the study was to examine what happens to child survival when DTP and OPV were introduced in low-income countries. A community study of the state of nutrition and family structure found that severe malnutrition was not evident in urban Guinea-Bissau although it was initially assumed to be the main cause of the under-five mortality rate.

The study findings emerged from a child population that had been followed with 3-monthly nutritional weighing sessions since 1978. From June 1981 DTP and OPV were offered from 3 months of age at these sessions. Due to the 3-monthly intervals between sessions, the children were allocated by birthday in a ‘natural experiment’ to receive vaccinations early or late between 3 and 5 months of age. The study included children who were greater than 6 months of age when vaccinations started and children born until the end of December 1983. The researchers compared mortality between 3 and 5 months of age of DTP-vaccinated and not-yet-DTP- vaccinated children in Cox proportional hazard models.

When mortality was compared, the mortality hazard ratio (HR) among 3-5-month-old children having received the DTP (±OPV) was 5.00 compared with not-yet-DTP-vaccinated children [i.e. a 400% increase]. According to the authors, differences in background factors did not explain the effect. All-cause infant mortality after 3 months of age increased after the introduction of these vaccines (2.12 (1.07–4.19)) [i.e. a 212% increase]. However, the study findings revealed the negative effect was particularly strong for children who had received DTP-only and no OPV (10.0 (2.61–38.6)).

The researchers concluded:

“DTP was associated with increased mortality; OPV may modify the effect of DTP.”

It appears this early Guinea-Bissau study foreshadowed a line of documented injury and mortality caused by the DPT. A 2000 BMJ article found that a population of vaccinated infants, also from Guinea-Bissau, receiving one dose of DTP or polio vaccines had higher mortality than children who had received none of these vaccines. A 2004 observational study showed a doubling of the mortality rate of infants vaccinated with the single dose of DPT vaccine and increasing mortality rates after the second and third doses. A 2011 study of Guinea-Bissau females found DTP vaccine administered simultaneously with measles vaccine is also associated with increased morbidity and poor growth in girls.[iv]

In the United States, the DTP vaccine received major public spotlight and pushback after the 1985 book DPT: A Shot in the Dark was published tracing its development and describing its risks. Recently complied reports show settlements of injury and deaths from the TDap, DTP, and DPT vaccines within the United States Vaccine Court jumped 75% from $5.5 million in 2014 to $9.8 million in 2015.

The Effects of Fluoride on Consciousness and the Will to Act*

The Effects of Fluoride on Consciousness and the Will to Act*

By Jordan Resnick

New evidence has linked fluoride and other chemicals to brain disorders. What other unknown effects might this industrial by-product added to our water supply have? An examination of water fluoridation’s shadowy history reveals potentially disturbing ramifications for human consciousness.

Recent research has brought the controversial practice of water fluoridation back into the spotlight, revealing links between water fluoridation and brain disorders, particularly in regard to its effect on children.

Troublingly, the report found that side-effects do not only come from direct ingestion by children, but also from higher levels of chemicals such as fluoride in expectant mothers’ blood and urine, which was linked to brain disorders and lower IQs in their children. In many cases, the changes triggered can be permanent. This evidence flies right in the face of spurious claims by skeptics that ingestion of fluoride in low concentrations has no harmful effects on our health.

Is it any wonder then that only seven countries in the world actually fluoridate more than 50 percent of their water supply? Although it is often portrayed in America as if every country does it, this is very far from the truth. In fact, the United States accounts for more than 50 percent of all the fluoridated water drinkers in the world, while the vast majority of European countries for example avoid this practice altogether.

So what is fluoride and why do a few countries continue to infuse their public drinking water with this controversial chemical? What ramifications might its side effects have for human development?

How Water Fluoridation Came to Be

Although there is widespread acceptance that fluoride is toxic in high doses, a trend emerged in the twentieth century to add this chemical to drinking water at dosages deemed to be “safe.” Where did this trend originate?

It may surprise you to hear that apparently the first occurrence of purposefully putting sodium fluoride into drinking water took place in the German ghettos of the 30s and 40s, and shortly thereafter in Nazi concentration camps. Clearly, the Nazis would not be concerned with the strength and resilience of their prisoners’ teeth; so, what could be the real reason to fluoridate the water? What effects does it really have upon us? And why are countries such as the United States still doing it?

Let’s now look at how water fluoridation started in America. An industry researcher from the Mellon Institute financed by the Alcoa Company first recommended water fluoridation in America in 1939. Seeing as Alcoa had toxic waste, a bi-product from aluminum otherwise known as fluoride and stood to benefit from finding a way to sell and dispose of it, could this really be a coincidence? The report convinced dentists and the public at large that water fluoridation is good for our teeth. With this, whether intended or not, the industry gained a way to get toxic waste off their hands, and moreover, even be paid to get rid of it—by selling it off to be dumped into the public water supply.

In 1946, an attorney and former counsel to Alcoa was appointed to head the U.S. Public Health Service. Shortly thereafter, he ensured that the water fluoridation “experiment” passed essentially unchallenged and unchecked by any real public study or research and was soon given a $750K private bonus from Alcoa. In today’s dollars, that’s worth anywhere from $6.89 million to $55.3 million, depending on how you account for inflation.

But some people have identified a more sinister agenda behind water fluoridation that goes beyond apparent greed and convenience. At the end of World War II, Charles Elliot Perkins, a researcher in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, and pathology, was sent to Germany to take charge of their chemical plants. He later wrote in response to what he had seen and heard while there:

The real purpose behind water fluoridation is to reduce the resistance of the masses to domination and control and loss of liberty … Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluorine will in time gradually reduce the individual’s power to resist domination by slowly poisoning and narco-tizing this area of the brain tissue, and make him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him.”

How Fluoride Suppresses Consciousness

Pineal gland parenchyma with calcifications. Attribution: Wiki User Difu Wu

But how does a chemical bi-product dumped into the water supply actually work upon those who ingest it over time? There are many ways sodium fluoride consumption affects our bodies, but one aspect we’ll focus on in this article is that sodium fluoride calcifies the pineal gland. British scientist Jennifer Luke published a study which found that fluoride deposits tended to accumulate in the pineal gland and calcify it. In addition, a 450 page review on fluoride toxicity published by the National Research Council in 2006 reported that fluoride produced a range of negative side effects including “decreased melatonin production” and “other effects on normal pineal function, which in turn could contribute to a variety of effects in humans.”

Not just scientists, but mystics too have explored the effects of the pineal gland within us (from different angles): physically, it plays an important role in regulating sleep patterns and sexual development; spiritually, it is said to be a connection between the body and the soul, and is referred to by some as our “third eye.” Either way, when the pineal gland is calcified by sodium fluoride, it obviously cannot function properly. This could have grave effects both physically and spiritually upon humanity.

There is more to the human body than its physical apparatus. This is widely evident in phenomenon such as near-death experiences, whereby people have had accounts of experiencing existence while their brain and body has been clinically dead. However, while we are here physically, the spiritual components depend upon the physical apparatus in order to function properly and thereby communicate and actively participate in the physical world. When an important seat of consciousness such as the pineal gland cannot function properly, by logical extension, consciousness itself cannot function properly within us, since the physical means with which it functions in the world has been damaged.

Thus, it is not only that fluoride consumption has adverse health effects and reputedly makes people easier to control (as the Nazi’s believed), but the very spiritual essence of who we are, our consciousness, can be hindered from manifesting in our lives. Within our consciousness are all the spiritual feelings such as love, peace, happiness, and freedom, as well as mystical experiences and psychic faculties. The consciousness gives us the ability to be “here,” “awake,” and present psychologically.

There are sinister agents in the world and beyond who wish to see consciousness suppressed. There appears to be an evil behind water fluoridation that runs deeper than mere convenience, and the implications go beyond fluoride’s reputed effects of making a people compliant who would otherwise question questionable things (such as water fluoridation – the irony notwithstanding). On the deepest level, it’s about a person’s individual ability to awaken consciousness and experience their full potential.

Concluding Remarks

Over ten years ago already, in November 2003, the United States passed the Water Act, which made it impossible for water companies to undergo civil or criminal hearings as a result of adding fluoride to public water supplies. It becomes more and more difficult to affect change on a mass scale to practices such as water fluoridation when those who have political, military, and legal control enact these types of measures. Fortunately, it is still within people’s ability to take measures to avoid fluoride and speak out however, and to personally do what they can to preserve, exercise, and awaken their own consciousness.

U.S. House Bill Would Allow Employers to Demand Genetic Information from Workers*

U.S. House Bill Would Allow Employers to Demand Genetic Information from Workers*

Last week, a House committee approved the bill HR 1313 (Preserving Employee Wellness Programs Act). If passed, it will allow corporations to require employees to undergo genetic testing or risk paying a penalty of thousands of dollars, and would let employers see that genetic and other health information,” according to PBS.

Employers demanding genetic data from workers is banned by a 2008 law called GINA, the genetic privacy and nondiscrimination law. The new bill would override that, stating that legal protection doesn’t apply when genetic tests are “part of a “workplace wellness” program.”

Although genetic testing isn’t the central focus of the bill as it’s presented, state sanctioned, pharma corporation enriching “workplace wellness programs” are something a power player politician would lobby for.

The Trump Administration is actually full of big pharma’s representatives, despite Trump claiming he would crack down on them. According to Era of Wisdom:

“The proposed replacement for Obamacare is being drafted by big pharma’s representatives in politics: recipients of hundreds of thousands of dollars from pharma corporations, namely Paul Ryan (Speaker of the House) and Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif).

It’s called the American Health Care Act (AHCA). We don’t really get to see what is in it yet, but those vying for power have privileged access to ponder it before us citizens. Ryan and McCarthy created the bill. They are respectively the 2 House of Representatives members with the closest financial ties to big pharma.

They each received over 200,000$ from pharma corporations in the past 2 years, well documented at MapLight.org.”

The bill HR 1313 seamlessly continues a pattern of the government promoting more restrictive conditions for employment, following in the Obama Administration’s footsteps.

This seamless transition was summarized by STAT:

“Employers got virtually everything they wanted for their workplace wellness programs during the Obama administration.

The ACA allowed them to charge employees 30%, and possibly 50%, more for health insurance if they declined to participate in the “voluntary” programs, which typically include cholesterol and other screenings; health questionnaires that ask about personal habits, including plans to get pregnant; and sometimes weight loss and smoking cessation classes.

And in rules that Obama’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued last year, a workplace wellness program counts as “voluntary” even if workers have to pay thousands of dollars more in premiums and deductibles if they don’t participate.”

While the right of an employer to make conditions the way they choose should not be delegated to some central authority like government (from an anarchist’s perspective at least), there must be some other reason why this is being pushed.

Maybe it’s because information is harvested by some corporations when they demand it from employees, and harvested data is money.

Continuing from the STAT article:

They sometimes sell the health information they collect from employees. As a result, employees get unexpected pitches for everything from weight-loss programs to running shoes, thanks to countless strangers poring over their health and genetic information.”

Concerns about where this is headed are expressed in an article titled “H.R. 1313: part of the trend of eugenics”:

“Recently I had genetic testing done, of my own volition, because of my family’s history of breast cancer, associated with a gene mutation common in those of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. The conversations surrounding the decision to have testing done were fascinating, because questions about ancestry, genetics, and inherited traits lead one to conversations about the racial prejudice.”

“Luckily, I tested negative for the gene. But what if I hadn’t? What if, a few years from now, I suddenly found myself denied health coverage because of this “curse”? If this bill passes, how many women (and men) who carry the breast cancer gene are going to find themselves unable to procure health care? And would people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent – or other genetically at-risk demographics –  be especially targeted for mandatory testing?”

Burkina Faso Settles Dispute with Monsanto over GM Cotton*

Burkina Faso’s cotton sector has settled a dispute with Monsanto over what it said were revenue losses caused by the introduction of GM cotton

EXCERPT: The Inter-professional Cotton Association of Burkina (AICB), which groups together the three cotton companies and the national farmers union, said that quality was damaged when Monsanto introduced the gene into its cotton. In particular, they said fibre length, one of the chief measures of quality, was reduced, causing Burkina Faso’s cotton to fetch lower prices on the world market.

By Joe Bavier

Burkina Faso’s cotton sector has settled a dispute with U.S. seed maker Monsanto over what it said were revenue losses caused by the introduction of genetically modified cotton, the head of the country’s main cotton company told Reuters.

The agreement, which includes the dividing up of royalties withheld by Monsanto’s Burkina Faso partners, brings definitive closure to a collaboration that had promised to offer the company a foothold in Africa but ended in dispute.

“In doing this, we think that a bad deal is better than a bad court case. We have closed the Monsanto dossier. There is no longer a demand for compensation,” Wilfried Yameogo, managing director of SOFITEX, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

SOFITEX is part owned by the Burkinabe state and accounts for over 80% of national cotton output.

Burkina Faso is Africa’s top cotton producer but among the world’s poorest countries. It began the nationwide introduction of a variety of cotton containing Monsanto’s Bollgard II trait in 2008 to fight against pests.

However, the Inter-professional Cotton Association of Burkina (AICB), which groups together the three cotton companies and the national farmers union, said that quality was damaged when Monsanto introduced the gene into its cotton.

In particular, they said fibRE length, one of the chief measures of quality, was reduced, causing Burkina Faso’s cotton to fetch lower prices on the world market.

The AICB demanded over 48 billion CFA francs ($76 million) in compensation from Monsanto last year. It had meanwhile withheld royalties worth around 15 billion CFA francs owed to Monsanto for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 harvests.

“We reached an agreement on the division of the royalties with the Burkinabe side retaining 75% of the royalties and Monsanto accepting 25% of royalties,” Yameogo said.

That represents 3.7 billion CFA francs for Monsanto and 11.3 billion for the Burkina Faso partners, he added.

The head of Monsanto’s Africa division Gyanendra Shukla said he was not immediately able to comment on the settlement but said the company would issue a response.

Monsanto had previously acknowledged that changes in fiber length had been observed, but stated fiber quality is influenced by both environmental conditions and genetic background.

Monsanto is currently the subject of a $66 billion takeover by Germany’s Bayer AG.

Cotton production represents around 4% of Burkina Faso’s GDP and is the second-biggest source of state revenue after gold.

Burkina Faso did not renew its contract with Monsanto last year and this season it abandoned the use of the GM variety in favoUr of a return to its conventional cotton strain.

Agriculture Minister Jacob Ouedraogo told Reuters this week that the country was expected to produce around 600,000 tonnes of cotton in the 2016/2017 season, roughly on a par with the previous harvest.

Yameogo said quality controls indicated that the reintroduction of Burkina Faso’s conventional cotton had eliminated the quality issues.
