Scottish Parliament defies U.K. and Backs Independence Referendum*

Scottish Parliament defies U.K. and Backs Independence Referendum*

Scottish lawmakers have backed calls by Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for a second independence referendum to separate from the U.K. just one day before London triggers two years of negotiations on withdrawing from the European Union.

Lawmakers from the Green Party joined forces with members of the Scottish National Party to back Sturgeon’s controversial measure, which passed with 69 votes to 59.

The vote has triggered an official request from the U.K government for talks over a Section 30 order, the legal mechanism used to transfer the powers from London to Edinburgh for a referendum, preferably in late 2018 or early 2019.

Speaking in the semi-autonomous Scottish Parliament at the start of Tuesday’s debate, Sturgeon called on lawmakers to vote in favour of a new independence referendum.

Scotland held its first referendum in 2014, when over 55% of the people voted against independence.

Talks of a new referendum gained momentum following a spat between Britain and Scotland over the U.K.’s withdrawal from the E.U.

Although nearly 52% of Britons opted to leave the bloc during the E.U. referendum in June last year, some 62% of the Scottish people voted against the decision.

Sturgeon is trying to build support among the Scottish public for another independence referendum after an earlier vote was defeated in 2014.

Sturgeon said last week that she’s open to discussions on the timing of the vote if the British government presents “a clear alternative and the rationale for it.” However, she insisted that she has a mandate to call a referendum because Brexit means the status quo is no longer an option.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly insisted that now is not the time for another independence referendum and that all efforts should be on securing the best Brexit deal for the whole of Britain after Article 50 is triggered on Wednesday.

Flint to get New Pipes after $87mn Settlement*

Flint to get New Pipes after $87mn Settlement*

A deal between the state of Michigan, the city of Flint, several Flint-based pastors, and the American Civil Liberties Union, has resulted in the state paying $87 million to replace lead-tainted pipelines with galvanized steel pipes.

The state of Michigan will provide Flint up to $87 million to upgrade water pipes and set up water bottle distribution centres so that residents can have clean drinking water under the terms of the settlement proposed on Monday.

The deal requires that $47 million of the $87 million not come from the same sources approved last year by Congress and President Barack Obama for $40 million, Booth Michigan reported.

The settlement will not become legally binding until Tuesday when it will be reviewed by U.S. District Judge David Lawson. It includes much of what a coalition of civil rights activists, religious leaders, and the National Resources Defense Council initially sought and would force Flint and Michigan to commit to long-term plans for rectifying the lead crisis.

It also includes, however, a few concessions from the coalition. Instead of having water delivered door-to-door to homes not be verified to have water filters while roughly 18,000 pipelines were replaced, the state will be required to operate nine water distribution centres where Flint residents may pick up bottled water.

Michigan will be allowed to close up to three of them after May 1, if 20 or fewer people pick up from them, the Detroit News reported.

The state will also be required to reserve another $10 million of federal funds in case repairs are more expensive than expected. In addition, the state will be responsible for appointing a third party to monitor the lead levels of 100 homes for at least three years. Michigan will also expand Community Outreach and Resident Education programs in order to provide education, installation, and expansion of water filters.

Those involved in the litigation cannot comment on the matter until after the deal is formally accepted.

Comment: Why what’s the catch….

No Force on Earth can Compete with NATO and U.S.’ Drug Trafficking Business in Afghanistan*

No Force on Earth can Compete with NATO and U.S.’ Drug Trafficking Business in Afghanistan*

By Jonas E. Alexis

“In country after country, from Mexico and Honduras to Panama and Peru, the CIA helped set up or consolidate intelligence agencies that became forces of repression, and whose intelligence connections to other countries greased the way for illicit drug shipments.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has done it again. He has recently grabbed the New World Order establishment by the horn and cut them to pieces with a chainsaw when he said that the establishment has done covert and illegal operations in places like Afghanistan. Lavrov did not mince words:

The U.S. operation against the Taliban and al-Qaeda was supported by all countries. It’s another matter that after receiving the international approval, the United States and its NATO allies, which took over in Afghanistan, started acting rather inconsistently, to put it mildly.

“During their operation in Afghanistan, the terrorist threat has not been rooted out, while the drug threat has increased many times over. The drug industry prospered. There is factual evidence that some of the NATO contingents in Afghanistan turned a blind eye to the illegal drug trafficking, even if they were not directly involved in these criminal schemes.

“Afghanistan is a separate case, although the current developments there, which are a result of the NATO operation’s failure, despite the carte blanche the bloc received from the international community, can be considered an unintended cause of managed chaos. In Iraq, Syria and Libya, this chaos was created intentionally.”

Lavrov is right in line with the scholarly world. Peter Dale Scott of the University of California writes:

“In country after country, from Mexico and Honduras to Panama and Peru, the CIA helped set up or consolidate intelligence agencies that became forces of repression, and whose intelligence connections to other countries greased the way for illicit drug shipments.”

Noted historian Alfred W. McCoy of the University of Wisconsin has reported the same thing. McCoy began to work on this issue while he was a Ph.D. candidate in Southeast Asian history at Yale back in 1972. He accused American officials “of condoning and even cooperating with corrupt elements in Southeast Asia’s illegal drug trade out of political and military considerations.” McCoy’s

“major charges was that South Vietnam’s President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, Vice President Nguyễn Cao Kỳ, and Prime Minister Trần Thiện Khiêm led a narcotics ring with ties to the Corsican mafia, the Trafficante crime family in Florida, and other high level military officials in South Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Those implicated by McCoy included Laotian Generals Ouane Rattikone and Vang Pao and South Vietnamese Generals Đăng Văn Quang and Ngô Dzu.”

McCoy produced enough evidence which indicated that the CIA used “tribal mercenaries” in places like Laos in order to maintain their criminal and drug trafficking business.

In short, Lavrov was essentially deconstructing the CIA when he said that they have been spreading corruption throughout the world for decades. Whenever they take a break from spreading opium, they start perpetuating wars and creating false flags in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and now in Syria.

The CIA is certainly not happy about what Lavrov has said. This is one reason why they hate Russia and all that it represents.

Keystone XL Foes Brace for Battle

President Donald Trump approves permit for Keystone XL Pipeline across Canadian border re-igniting opposition

President Donald Trump’s approval of the cross-border permit that would allow the Keystone XL pipeline to be laid across the 49th Parallel eliminates the hurdle that stopped it in 2015. But other obstacles have cropped up in the meantime, and opponents of the TransCanada project in both the U.S. and Canada are joining forces to fight the pipeline—led by Indigenous Peoples.

“Today, the fight to kill the Keystone XL Pipeline begins anew—and Donald Trump should expect far greater resistance than ever before,” said Tom Goldtooth, executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network.

“Indigenous people are rising up and fighting like our lives, sovereignty, and climate depend on it—because they do. Over and over again, we’ve seen Trump choose the profits of his billionaire friends over our sovereign, treaty and human rights. It shows a clear disregard of our tribal rights to consent and self-determination, and it is unacceptable in this day and age.”

Trump had signed executive orders and memoranda days after taking office that were designed to move forward both the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Soon afterward the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave Energy Transfer Partners the last permit it needed to drill under the Missouri River at Lake Oahe. And on Friday March 24, U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Tom Shannon signed a permit for TransCanada “to construct, connect, operate, and maintain pipeline facilities at the U.S.-Canadian border in Phillips County, Montana for the importation of crude oil,” according to a State Department press release. (Newly appointed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, had recused himself from the decision, according to McClatchy newswire.)

“Today we begin to make things right,” Trump said on Friday March 24, according to The New York Times.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe said the approval would do anything but. Chairman David Archambault II decried the Keystone XL approval and vowed that the tribe would fight it as vociferously as it had stood ground against DAPL.

“Once again, the treaty lands of the Great Sioux Nation are threatened by Keystone—a perilous pipeline,” Archambault said in a statement.

“President Trump has described the proposed pipeline as ‘the greatest technology known to man or woman.’ If that is the case, then I would encourage him to do some research and look at the number of oil spills we’ve experienced throughout this country, the levels of water pollution, and the science behind climate change. This is not the way of the future.”

The $8 billion pipeline is slated to transport up to 830,000 barrels per day of viscous bitumen from the Alberta Oil Sands in Canada, to the U.S. and eventually to the Gulf Coast for likely export. Given the need to reduce fossil fuel extraction and consumption, Obama in 2015 declared it was not in the best interests of the United States.

The project has been hit with resistance in both the U.S. and Canada.

“Governments should be supporting action to fight climate change and support Indigenous rights, not trying to ram through projects like the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline,” said Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Manitoba Regional Chief Kevin Hart in a statement from the Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sands Expansion, a consortium of 122 First Nations and tribes on both sides of the border.

“Indigenous peoples across the continent will stand together to protect our rights and our traditional territories.”

The indigenous groups oppose expansion of the Alberta oil sands in general and has been working to block passage of various pipeline and rail projects to transport crude from that region.

Trump’s actions do not ensure that the pipeline will be built. It lacks permits in key areas, and some of its existing permits have expired elsewhere, meaning the company will have to reapply. And opponents such as Bold Nebraska, where the route remains unapproved, plan to step up their game.

“TransCanada still has no state permit or approved route in Nebraska,” Bold Nebraska said in a statement. “The Nebraska Public Service Commission just launched an 8-12 month review of their pipeline route permit application. The process includes public hearings and formal ‘intervenor’ proceedings that will take legal, Treaty and water experts.”

Also standing between TransCanada and approval “is the core group of brave farmers and ranchers, who for seven years have refused to give in to TransCanada’s threats of using eminent domain for their private gain,” Bold Nebraska said.

“Landowners have fought the TransCanada’s attempts to seize their land against their will and continue to fight this abuse of eminent domain for private gain in the courts.”

With exemptions to Trump’s stated requirement that Keystone XL be made with U.S. instead of foreign steel, plus the minimal number of jobs that would be created, are not engendering much faith in the project’s necessity.

“The Trump Administration’s review of this toxic pipeline was tainted from the beginning, leaving no doubt that Trump would try to force this pipeline through regardless of the consequences it would have on the communities it touches, or on our climate,” Goldtooth said. “We’ve stopped the toxic Keystone XL Pipeline once, and we will do it again. Indigenous nations stand united not just here in the U.S. but around the world. This fight is not over, it is just beginning.”

Blacklisted, Smeared and Silenced for Exposing NATO Destabilization of Syria*

Blacklisted, Smeared and Silenced for Exposing NATO Destabilization of Syria*

By Mnar Muhawesh

Though it’s been nearly six years, the subject of the Syrian conflict remains as contentious as ever. While those who characterize themselves as pro-regime change have monopolized the wider conversation on Syria, even the most tame opposition against foreign intervention, or the CIA-backed rebels—who now come in varying flavors of extremism—continues to be taboo.

Those who refuse to support U.S. military intervention in Syria and the CIA backed regime change operation there that has been well documented for over 25 years — are branded “Assadists” — and if you’re a writer or commentator?

Well, that gets you and your work blacklisted from publications and, in the case of journalists like myself and others who make up a long list of anti-interventionists far too long to mention here, even gets your speaking engagements shut down and kicked off of blogs, regardless of what topic they’re on.

It seems that opposing what clearly amounts to a NATO-imposed regime change operation in Syria in order to create the next Afghanistan in the Middle East and ultimately weaken Russia and Iran gets you characterized as a supporter of genocide.

But this is not a new phenomenon — we’ve been here before as recently as Libya and Iraq.

During the pro-war campaign against Libya, we were told, just as we were during previous conflicts, that military intervention was necessary in order to protect civilians from a madman.

The same loudmouthed pundits who led us down the bloody path of war have since been eerily silent in the aftermath — where Libya is now being overrun by groups like ISIS and the country is being described as a failed state.

In Iraq, we saw an energized anti-war movement smeared as being pro-Saddam, and now, despite what we’ve learned about both conflicts, history seems to be repeating itself. Many are now suffering a kind of collective amnesia over how war is peddled to the public.

Today we’re joined by Rania Khalek, an independent journalist who has become the latest victim  of an organized smearing and blacklisting campaign for her recent reporting on Syria. The organized campaign against her became so aggressive that several of her talks on apartheid in Israel were canceled after student groups were pressured to blacklist her events by pro-Syrian rebel activists who support US intervention and regime change.

The blacklisting of Rania Khalek garnered the attention of many notable scholars, activists and journalists including Noam Chomsky, John Pilger and Glenn Greenwald among others who signed a petition calling for an end to censorship and warning that there needs to be more open dialogue on Syria rather than silencing journalists.

Venezuela Maintains High Human Development Despite U.S. Engineered Economic Crisis*

Venezuela Maintains High Human Development Despite U.S. Engineered Economic Crisis*

Children studying in a state school in Caracas, Venezuela. May 23, 2014

Despite the ongoing economic crisis, Venezuela maintained a higher human development ranking than Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.

In spite of an ongoing economic crisis — created by a slump in global oil prices — Venezuela has maintained a high level of human development, according to the U.N., better even than many of its regional neighbours.

The U.N. Development Program released its 2016 Human Development report this week, ranking Venezuela 71st out of the 188 countries examined.

The Human Development Index is a scientific indicator with takes into account life expectancy, literacy and the general quality of life in each country.

Despite an ongoing food and medicine shortage — largely due to illegal hoarding by corporations owned by the right-wing opposition — Venezuela maintained a higher ranking than Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.

In the report, each of the 188 countries is given a measurement between zero and one. The closer to one, the higher the level of human development.

Venezuela was measured at 0.767 — better than Brazil’s 0.754, Peru’s 0.740 and Colombia’s 0.727 — only slightly lower than its 2013 rating of 0.771, and significantly higher than its ranking of 0.677 in 2000, just as President Hugo Chavez came to power and initiated his Bolivarian Revolution.

In South America, only Chile, Argentina and Uruguay had higher rankings than Venezuela.

Overall, the U.N. report noted that despite the general progress recorded in the Human Development Index during the last 25 years, extreme poverty and exclusion persist in Latin America, mainly due to unequal distribution of income.

The report also addresses the role of women, who continue to be poorer in general terms, partly because of unpaid work that undermines their professional and personal development. It also identified a deepening of inequalities against the indigenous population, who on average receive fewer years of education.

The report highlights the need to target universal policies to reduce human development deficits among the excluded. It directly recommends promoting inclusive growth, with an emphasis on women and mobilizing resources to meet human development priorities.

“Investments focused on human development priorities can provide low-cost but high-quality services and infrastructure for disadvantaged and marginalized groups,” the report said.

Deep State Manipulations in Haiti and Genocide*

Deep State Manipulations in Haiti and Genocide*

By Ezili Danto

Popular former President Aristide survived an assassination attempt this week against the backdrop of increased violence in the world’s first black republic. The mandate of the deeply resented U.N. occupying force MINUSTAH ends in April and is set to be renewed. The violence is orchestrated to justify continued imperialist intervention that benefits foreigners and their local henchmen.

Besides the inexplicable burning down of the Croix Bossales and LaSaline market places, today [Monday, March 20] former president Jean Bertrand Aristide was shot at and at least two people standing in front of his motorcade were hit and killed. Aristide survived the assassination attempt. But these pointed violences, just a few weeks before the U.N. rules on extending its mission in Haiti, are routine.

“At least two people were injured after shots were fired at a motorcade carrying former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide in Port-au-Prince Monday in an apparent assassination attempt.” –Shots fired at former President of Haiti Aristide.

The same foreign colonial forces that put in puppet president Jovenel Moise are continually manipulating the violence levels in Haiti to perpetuate their presence and colonnial interests in Haiti. (See, Barbarians Inside and at Haiti Gates: Israeli HLSI and Eva PeledNew Rochambeau Expedition to Haiti For Donald Trump led by Kenneth Merten and Haiti Can’t Seem to Disengage from “Henchman” Merten .)

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres recommended that the Haiti U.N. mission (MINUSTAH) “be extended for a final period of six months” after its current mandate expires on April 15, 2017. The U.N. Security Council is expected to decide on whether to extend the Haiti mission on April 11. So, of course, weeks before this critical vote and with a new president in the White House who wants to cut back on U.N. peacekeeping expenditures, the violence in Haiti increases. There’s ample evidence of this pattern since the U.N. got to the foreign cash cow that’s called “Haiti.”

The timing of the whole increased insecurity thing in Haiti, so soon after the rigged elections and the carnival, are orchestrated to rile up the people and set them up for more genocide by U.N. trained police if not the U.S.-Euro colonial forces in U.N. and HLSI uniforms. The alphabet guys and Kenneth Merten are aiming to keep the U.N. or another version of these foreign militaries in Haiti.

They’re angling to prolong the MINUSTAH aka TOURISTAH’s vacation to maintain the colonnial status quo. (See,  L’ONU propose une nouvelle mission en Haïti https://t.co/UZXAUYKV4S  and https://goo.gl/2sKvlE)  The Haiti oligarchs already have tons of private military security contractors to watch over the plundered lands they helped take from the traumatized (earthquake/cholera-fake election-ravaged) Haiti peoples under Obama through Michel Martelly’s decrees and the Clintons’ “earthquake relief” initiatives. But the alphabet guys want their own mercenary crews also. Trump is threatening to cut back on USAID funding and U.N. mission funding.

The Israeli (HLSI)/MOSSAD-CIA contract to build nine custom ports in Haiti and do surveillance was set up by powerful people who, with Digicel telecom and the Bigio, Apaid, Boulos, Abdullah oligarchs, made sure to put a criminal parliament and Jovenel Moise into power against the will of the Haiti majority. They are NOT going to let Jovenel Moise’s illegitimate government fall, no matter what they’re saying to the contrary to Washington. It took these predators more than three years to put Jovenel Moise in power. The rumor that Jovenel Moise and his new PM Guy Lafontant are useless and will fall before the year is out, is just another means to manipulate President Donald Trump into financing the Kenneth Merten-Clinton ilks and more military into Haiti.

Jovenel Moise, the used car parts salesman and water peddler was built-up by Antonia Sola’s PR firm as a big banana exporter. This lie is lifted for all to see now that Moise is president.

The immorality and criminality of the Haitians in politics, in its Parliament, the schooled Diaspora that supports them and the Middle Eastern oligarchs which upholds this deprave carnival is simply unspeakable (See– http://elsie-news.over-blog.com/2017/03/ou-est-passe-la-plantation-de-banane-susceptible-d-exporter-des-bananes-en-alemagne-de-l-homme-banane-fait-president-par-la-ci-une-s)

The situation is terrible. Haiti is saddled with un-elected and illegitimate rulers. Martelly and his crew cleaned out the treasury and left a nearly $2billion PetroCaraibe debt owed to Venezuela and the state cannot even pay the interests on this debt. There’s strikes at the airport, hospitals and teachers, because state employees have not been paid for months on end. The misery, unrest and general dissatisfaction was to be expected.

The Clinton-Obama-Merten crew set it up with the deep state in order to further kill more innocent Haitians. Everyone in Haiti knows who the money launderers and drug traffickers are because they hold high political positions. But, what folks must understand is that no matter what the money laundering Haitian tokens are doing, it’s NOTHING compared to the CIA-covert operation-drug trafficking uses of Haiti for the global military intelligence complex. Haiti is the place the deep state stash the families of the Christian Arabs who they use to create instability in the Middle East Muslim countries. Haiti is the space where Acra’s cocaine shiploads and unexposed others make tons of monies for the CIA/DEA deep-state operations to conduct their wars in Libya, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, to name a few. No Haitian is more corrupt then their handlers. (Indicted money laundering, drug trafficker Guy Philippe’s current pleadings where he accuses the CIA of getting him into the drug business is a case in point.)

Looking at the most recent public strikes at the airport, by the unpaid teachers and doctors, today’s assassination attempt on Aristide and yesterday’s burning down of the poor market women marketplaces (notice it’s not the Bigio or Mevs businesses in Site Soley that are burned down, but the poorest of the poor’s commercial spaces), but if you know the routine of the alphabet guys in Haiti, you’ll understand that they rule through crisis after crisis. It seems to me these handlers want to create more insecurity to manipulate Trump into sending troops to Haiti or increasing the U.N. troops there more visibly…. I say the U.S. put Jovenel Moise in, let them do what’s necessary for the people to have some peace. Bigio, Digicel, Mevs should pay the teachers, doctors and airport personnel that Martelly left empty handed. For, if Trump takes the bait and sends more corrupt deep state CIA/DEA and military into Haiti, he will cast himself into the same role as the status quo he replaced and probably be a one term president. This won’t help the American working class nor the Haiti working classes.

President Preval just died unexpectedly. It’s a good thing that former President Jean Bertrand Aristide survived this assassination attempt. Be on guard Haitians. This current government is not ours and no Haitian life should be sacrificed to bring in more foreign military to kill Haitians. Stay alive Ayisyen. Sove tèt nou. Pran yon ti chez pou gade. Kite kriminèl yo tiye tèt yo poukont yo. Chanjman ap rive. Ginen poze.
