Canada’s Forgotten Case of Duplessis Orphans*

Between the 1940s and 1960s, when the Roman Catholic Church dominated life in Canada’s Quebec, the provincial government committed horrible crimes against orphaned children. Sputnik spoke with people closely familiar with the subject, including a former orphan who was confined to a psychiatric institution during his childhood.

Maurice Le Noblet Duplessis (20 April 1890 – 7 September 1959) served as the 16th Premier of Quebec in Quebec, Canada from 1936 to 1939 and 1944 to 1959. His later years have come to be known as The Great Darkness due to corruption and scandal.

The Catholic Church and the provincial government of Quebec, then led by Maurice Duplessis, a strict Catholic himself, made a deal, which falsely certified 300,000 orphaned children as mentally-ill, confining them to psychiatric institutions.

The deal was beneficial for the Church and psych wards, as they received funds from the government for “taking care” of orphans. These children later became known as the Duplessis orphans.

Thousands of children died in these institutions. Those victims who survived in mental-health hospitals told horrifying stories of how unspeakable things were done to them when they were young.

Years later, survivors began to speak out about all the harsh treatment and sexual abuse that they endured for years.

“I remember when I was sent to that clinic with a maximum level of security and closure from the outside world, we were put to tests, which they called ‘pharmaceutical research.’ They tested the methods of ice showers and gave us different medications,” Lucien Landry, a former Duplessis orphan, told Sputnik.

Some children tried to run away from these institutions, but staff took away their clothes, leaving them wearing only nightgowns. Their heads were shaved. Children had no shoes, wearing only socks and tights, Landry shared his painful childhood memories.

Although Landry never suffered from a mental illness, when he was sent to a psychiatric ward his personal file said “unable to function in public, needs a permanent and involuntary placement in the clinic.”

In 1962, Landry managed to escape from that clinic. Soon he found a job and began a normal life. Eventually, Landry was able to find his mother at the age of 48. He didn’t even know where he was born, until a Quebec social agency, which helps former Duplessis orphans, told Landry he was born in Quebec City.

“I know many Duplessis orphans and trust me they’re definitely not mentally challenged. One of Quebec’s renowned novelists Bruno Rua is a Duplessis orphan,” said Alain Arsenault, a Montreal-based lawyer currently working on the case of orphans.

The lives of these people are permanently damaged by the Church and the Quebec government, which took-away their childhood and filled it with pain, abuse and other dark memories.

Imagine adults who suddenly realize at 40 or 50 that they couldn’t receive any education simply because someone wrote on their personal file that they had a non-existent mental disability. And for what? Well, because the Catholic Church of Quebec wanted to receive an extra dollar and a half for each child per day, Arsenault told Sputnik.

The Catholic Church Won’t Apologize

The role of the Catholic Church was central in the whole ordeal — it was making money off of its institutions, bringing in healthy children and diagnosing them a slew of non-existent mental illnesses, so the institutions could receive more money from the government, Arsenault said.

“The Catholic Church of Quebec is the main perpetrator in this case, while the government and doctors assisted to it. The Church has never apologized for anything,” Arsenault told Sputnik.

What’s even more outrageous, the Church says they helped orphans by “taking care” of them, by providing them with food and shelter. The Church refuses to speak with journalists, hoping that people would eventually forget what happened as time goes by. Survivors would eventually die out one by one and nobody would be taken accountable for horrible crimes against the orphaned children of Quebec, Arsenault said with disappointment.

100,000 Bankers Lost Their Jobs in 2015*

Nearly 100,000 Western bank employees lost their jobs in 2015, according to an analysis by the Financial Times. Those job losses comprised over 10% of the workforce among 11 large American and European banks, continuing the overall trend that followed the infamous financial crash of 2008. Cuts are expected to continue in years to come, as alternative technology revolutionizes the financial sector.

Business Insider noted some of the banking giants that eliminated positions this year: “They include HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Credit Suisse. Barclays and BNP Paribas are expected to add to cuts early in the new year.”

FT reported on various reasons for the reduction in employees:

“Banks have found that they have been carrying too many staff, as they suffer falls in revenues from a combination of tougher post-crisis regulation, ultra-low interest rates and sluggish activity among clients.”

The growth of financial start-ups and apps (known in the banking industry as fintech) is confounding the job hemorrhage. As Jon Peace, a banking analyst at London-based Nomura, told the Times:

“Digital transformation could also be a driver of further headcount reduction longer term, with retail banks cutting branches in favour of online services and investment banks cutting back offices in favour of online technologies such as blockchain.”

As Business Insider has summarized, block-chain is “the software that underpins bitcoin and uses complex cryptography to allow transactions between strangers to take place without the need for a trusted intermediary such as a bank or clearing house.” Gizmodo explains the blockchain “is designed to make transactions safe and reliable even if the people doing them don’t trust each other,” noting enthusiasts believe it has “genuine potential to tip power dynamics in banking, politics, the internet, and everywhere authorities, well, authorize things.”

Last month, former Barclay’s CEO Antony Jenkins commented on the power of new technologies:

“We will see massive pressure on incumbent banks, which will struggle to implement new technologies at the same pace as their new rivals. That will make it increasingly challenging for them to deliver the returns and profitability that their shareholders demand.

“Ultimately, those forces will compel large banks to significantly automate their business. I predict that the number of branches and people employed in the financial services sector may decline by as much as 50% over the next 10 years, and even in a less harsh scenario I expect a decline of at least 20%.”

A British survey of senior bankers last month found 27% view tech firms as the greatest threat to their business. In light of these concerns, banks are consequently attempting to improve their technology. Apple Pay is a prime example of such efforts. Further, this year, bankers invested $50 million in a blockchain-oriented company, acknowledging Bitcoin could “shape the future of finance.”

In spite of such undertakings to remain relevant in the 21st century, the Financial Times analysis shows banks are continuing to shed jobs. Financial Times noted the losses reflect an ongoing trend, as U.S. banks and insurers cut more than 400,000 jobs in the first five years of the financial crisis. In Europe, the 30 largest banks cut 80,000 jobs between 2008 and 2014.

As Jenkins said last month: “In my view only a few [incumbent banks] will have the courage and decisiveness to win in this new field.”

Neuroscientist Shows Fasting Bolsters Your Brain, but Big Pharma Won’t Study It*

Below is a TEDx talk given by Mark Mattson, the current Chief of the Laboratory of Neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging. He is also a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University, and one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying multiple neurodegenerative disorders, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

I chose to include ‘Big Pharma’ in the title because that’s exactly what it is. There have been countless examples of the manipulation of published research at the hands of pharmaceutical companies in recent years. This is why Harvard Professor of Medicine Arnold Symour Relman told the world that the medical profession has been bought by the pharmaceutical industry. It’s why Dr. Richard Horton, Editor in Chief of The Lancet, recently stated that much of the scientific literature published today is simply untrue. It’s why Dr. Marcia Angell, former Editor in Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine, said that the

“pharmaceutical industry likes to depict itself as a research-based industry, as the source of innovative drugs. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

And it’s why John Ioannidis, an epidemiologist at the Stanford University School of Medicine, published an article titled “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False” which subsequently became the most widely accessed article in the history of the Public Library of Science (PLoS).

I also chose to mention ‘Big Pharma’ because of Dr. Mattson’s comments towards the end of the video.

“Why is it that the normal diet is three meals a day plus snacks? It isn’t that it’s the healthiest eating pattern, now that’s my opinion but I think there is a lot of evidence to support that. There are a lot of pressures to have that eating pattern, there’s a lot of money involved. The food industry — are they going to make money from skipping breakfast like I did today? No, they’re going to lose money. If people fast, the food industry loses money. What about the pharmaceutical industries? What if people do some intermittent fasting, exercise periodically and are very healthy, is the pharmaceutical industry going to make any money on healthy people?” 

Main Points of The Lecture Above & The Science To Go With It

Mark and his team have published several papers that discuss how fasting twice a week could significantly lower the risk of developing both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Dietary changes have long been known to have an effect on the brain. Children who suffer from epileptic seizures have fewer of them when placed on caloric restriction or fasts. It is believed that fasting helps kick-start protective measures that help counteract the overexcited signals that epileptic brains often exhibit. (Some children with epilepsy have also benefited from a specific high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet.) Normal brains, when over-fed, can experience another kind of uncontrolled excitation, impairing the brain’s function, Mattson and another researcher reported in January in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience.”(source)

Basically, when you take a look at caloric restriction studies, many of them show a prolonged lifespan as well as an increased ability to fight chronic disease.

“Calorie restriction (CR) extends life span and retards age-related chronic diseases in a variety of species, including rats, mice, fish, flies, worms, and yeast. The mechanism or mechanisms through which this occurs are unclear.”

The quote above is from a review of the literature that is more than 10 years old. The work presented here is now showing some of these mechanisms that were previously unclear.

Fasting does good things for the brain, and this is evident by all of the beneficial neuro-chemical changes that happen in the brain when we fast. It also improves cognitive function, increases neurotrophic factors, increases stress resistance, and reduces inflammation.

Fasting is a challenge to your brain, and your brain responds to that challenge by adapting stress response pathways which help your brain cope with stress and risk for disease. The same changes that occur in the brain during fasting mimic the changes that occur with regular exercise. They both increase the production of protein in the brain (neurotrophic factors), which in turn promotes the growth of neurons, the connection between neurons, and the strength of synapses.

“Challenges to your brain, whether it’s intermittent fasting [or]vigorous exercise . . . is cognitive challenges. When this happens neuro-circuits are activated, levels of neurotrophic factors increase, that promotes the growth of neurons [and]the formation and strengthening of synapses. . . .”

Fasting can also stimulate the production of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus. He also mentions ketones (an energy source for neurons), and how fasting stimulates the production of ketones and that it may also increase the number of mitochondria in neurons. Fasting also increases the number of mitochondria in nerve cells; this comes as a result of the neurons adapting to the stress of fasting (by producing more mitochondria).

By increasing the number of mitochondria in the neurons, the ability for nerons to form and maintain the connections between each other also increases, thereby improving learning and memory ability.

“Intermittent fasting enhances the ability of nerve cells to repair DNA.” 

He also goes into the evolutionary aspect of this theory – how our ancestors adapted and were built for going long periods of time without food.

A study published in the June 5 issue of Cell Stem Cell by researchers from the University of Southern California showed that cycles of prolonged fasting protect against immune system damage and, moreover, induce immune system regeneration. They concluded that fasting shifts stem cells from a dormant state to a state of self-renewal. It triggers stem cell based regeneration of an organ or system. (source)

Human clinical trials were conducted using patients who were receiving chemotherapy. For long periods of time, patients did not eat, which significantly lowered their white blood cell counts. In mice, fasting cycles “flipped a regenerative switch, changing the signalling pathways for hematopoietic stem cells, which are responsible for the generation of blood and immune systems.”

This means that fasting kills off old and damaged immune cells, and when the body rebounds it uses stem cells to create brand new, completely healthy cells.

“We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the heatopoietic system. . . . When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged.  What we started noticing in both our human work and animal work is that the white blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting. Then when you re-feed, the blood cells come back. ” – Valter Longo, corresponding author (source)

A scientific review of multiple scientific studies regarding fasting was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2007. It examined a multitude of both human and animal studies and determined that fasting is an effective way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. It also showed significant potential in treating diabetes. (source)

Before You Fast

Before you fast, make sure you do your research. Personally, I’ve been fasting for years, so it is something that comes easy for me.

One recommended way of doing it — which was tested by the BBC’s Michael Mosley in order to reverse his diabetes, high cholesterol, and other problems that were associated with his obesity — is what is known as the “5:2 Diet.” On the 5:2 plan, you cut your food down to one-fourth of your normal daily calories on fasting days (about 600 calories for men and about 500 for women), while consuming plenty of water and tea. On the other five days of the week, you can eat normally.

Another way to do it, as mentioned above, is to restrict your food intake between the hours of 11am and 7pm daily, while not eating during the hours outside of that time.

Bottom line, how you think about your diet is, in my opinion, one of the most, if not the most important part of staying healthy. How you think about what you are putting in your body is important, and I believe this will eventually be firmly established in the untainted, unbiased, uninfluenced medical literature of the future.

Last year Nigerian soldiers slaughtered 33 Shia worshipers in a widely condemned dissident crackdown.

The annual religious procession of Nigeria’s Shi’ite minority seems to get attacked by the Nigerian military every year. Last year, the attack during the procession killed 30 demonstrators, including three children of the group’s spiritual leader.

This year, Shi’ite protesters held an advanced demonstration before the religious process, slamming military attacks against them and throwing rocks at the convoy of a general involved in last year’s crackdown, a move which the Nigerian military labelled an “assassination attempt.” They claimed the Shi’ites were armed with “swords and daggers.”

So once again, the military moved against the Shi’ites in force this weekend, killing around 300 according to the Shi’ite movement. The exact toll could not be determined, however, as the Nigerian military took all the bodies with them when they left.

The Nigerian government claimed only 20 people were killed, while the Nigerian military admitted to having 60 bodies. Locals, however, suggest the toll was much, much higher.

Dubbed ‘The School of Dictators’ by dissidents and human rights activists the U.S. Army School of the Americas, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, has produced some of the world’s most notorious torturers, drug traffickers and war criminals. The spectre of their crimes still haunts much of Latin America—from Argentina to El Salvador.

Founder of the human rights advocacy group School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch), and Roman Catholic priest Father Roy Bourgeois described what he saw in El Salvador as beyond the pale, explaining that he was more fearful in El Salvador than he had been in Vietnam. There was no accountability that existed there, and the human rights abuses were almost indescribable. From the assassination of bishop Óscar Romero to the raping and killing of American nuns Maura Clarke, Ita Ford, Dorothy Kazel, and Jean Donovan. The four women had been kidnapped, brutalized and killed by right wing death squads funded by the United States.

“The guns that were killing people [were] paid for by our tax money..those that did the killing not only used our guns but they were trained in the United States at the U.S. Army School of the Americas at Fort Benning in Georgia,” Father Roy explains.

The School of the Americas was first established in 1946 and hosted in U.S.-controlled territory in Panama before re-establishing at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1984 after being expelled under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty.

The school’s most well known graduates include Jorge Videla, the military dictator of Argentina who dominated the country from 1976 to 1981 who caused the deaths of at least 9,000 people and disappearances of an estimated 30,000 others. Another star pupil of the school was CIA agent, Vladimiro Montesinos, who went on to become Peru’s counterintelligence head. Montesino directed an anti-communist death squad called the Colina Group which committed numerous horrifying massacres of peasant farmers, trade unionists and alleged leftists.

National Front Targeting Scottish School Students*

Organizers at British far-right group the National Front (NF) are launching a new recruitment drive outside schools around Scotland in a bid to draw children into their youth movement.

The group will hand out copies of ‘Bulldog’ – its magazine aimed at teenagers – to over 14s leaving school during term time.

In a Facebook post, the NF said it would recruit the young people of Scotland and “take back our land.”

“We have sent copies of the party’s re-launched Bulldog magazine to our units across Scotland. We will be distributing free copies of Bulldog to school children aged 14 years and over,” it said.

“The first copies will be distributed outside schools in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow in January 2016.

“Let’s recruit the youth of our country and take back our land.”

The NF is described as “one of the most notorious and longest running racist organizations in the world” by anti-racism charity Hope not Hate.

The group, which includes neo-Nazis among its members, said anyone under the age of 25 can sign up for £10 (US$15) a year.

The NF’s youth division will embrace “the beliefs of white nationalism” and calls on people to “stop the genocide of the white race.”

Potential recruits are warned they will be labelled racist by those who are trying to bring down white people.

“Those who say you are racists do so because they are actively working for the downfall of our folk and future generations of white children.”

The Scottish government described the NF’s tactic of approaching young people as “disturbing.”

“The National Front holds no place in Scottish politics. Spreading this type of hatred outside schools and to our young people is disturbing to say the least.”

Scottish Green Party co-convener Maggie Chapman said by targeting young people the organization would waste education resources that should be focused on teaching.

“The idea that this far-right racist organization that wants to deport people who have made Scotland their home and criminalize gay people plans to target schoolchildren is repugnant. Hanging around school gates with hate-filled propaganda shows the level to which this outfit stoops.

“Such inappropriate behavior will not only alarm many children and parents, but will also waste resources that should be focused on teaching children.”

The NF made headlines in Wales last month when it held a counter-protest to a Stop the War demonstration against extending British airstrikes from Iraq into Syria.

During the face-off between NF members and anti-war activists, Welsh police formed a human barrier between the two groups before leading the far-right group away.

Greece has signed its first major privatization deal granting control of over a dozen regional airports to a German company. The agreement is part of international creditors’ demands to privatize state assets to secure €86 billion in bailout funds for Athens.

The €1.23 billion contract gives a 40-year lease to the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport. The German firm could upgrade and operate a cluster of airports, including those on the popular tourist islands of Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini.

Fraport chief executive, Stefan Schulte called the deal a “win-win” for “Greece and its people.”

“The project underscores the extensive know-how that Fraport will be able to provide at these 14 aviation gateways which are vital for Greece’s economy and, in particular, its huge international tourism sector,” Schulte said.

“It’s a very significant development and a strong message, in all directions, that the Greek economy is winning the trust of markets and entering the road toward growth,” said Stergios Pitsiorlas, the head of Greece’s privatization agency.

The privatization deal with Fraport was agreed last year but final negotiations were frozen when Syriza came to power in January. It goes against Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ pre-election promise not to privatize the country’s infrastructure. The idea was strongly opposed by Syriza’s left platform which accused the coalition of “surrendering” public assets.

Around €3 billion in revenue has been raised in Greece through privatizations over the last six years. In terms of the current bailout program, the Greek government has to raise an additional €6.2 billion from selling or awarding management contracts for state-owned assets in the next three years. The measure aims at reducing national debt and increasing investment.

On Tuesday night the Greek Parliament will vote on the latest package of economic measures which is widely expected to be passed. If approved it would unlock the next €1 billion in bailout funds.

Greece’s two biggest unions GSEE and ADEDY have already called on workers to rally in central Athens against the so-called austerity measures.

At least three Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) supporters’ social media accounts are run from IP addresses linked to the British government’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), a group of hackers has claimed.

The group of teenage computer experts, known as ‘VandaSec,’ have unearthed details of internet protocol (IP) addresses used by three jihadists to access Twitter accounts used to carry out online recruitment.

The addresses were thought to be based in Saudi Arabia, but upon further inspection they linked back to the DWP’s London offices, according to the Daily Mirror.

“Don’t you think that’s strange?” one of the hackers asked the Daily Mirror.

“We traced these accounts back to London, the home of the British intelligence services,” they added.

This revelation has sparked speculation that someone inside the government is running IS-supporting accounts, or they were created by intelligence services to trap wannabe terrorists.

The evidence caused the Cabinet Office to admit to selling IP addresses to two Saudi firms earlier this year. An expert has suggested this is why the IP’s are linked to the government.

Following the sale, the IP addresses were used by extremists to spread their message of hate on social media.

The DWP denied owning the IP addresses.

“The government owns millions of unused IP addresses which we are selling to get a good return for hardworking taxpayers,” a Cabinet Office spokesperson said.

“We have sold a number of these addresses to telecoms companies, both in the UK and internationally, to allow their customers to connect to the internet.

“We think carefully about which companies we sell addresses to, but how their customers use this internet connection is beyond our control.”

However, the government failed to reveal how much money was made from selling the IP addresses.
